    Lego is amazing, and Lego animals are cool, but recently Lego has started releasing some animal sets that are on a whole different level. But are they anatomically correct? Are they as amazing as they seem? We'll have to get a trained zoologist to weigh in!

      Actually Clint they could have been binoculars in orange or red
      On a 1x2 clip bar/holder bar clip.
      Here let me see if I can construct an example with emojis or something
      🤘= red binocular piece with red or orange small claw pieces, sitting on a (red bar clip) idk it’s real name. Attached as part of the foot that’s fused. 🪝= unfused toe could have used that little piece [describing it(it’s bluish grey/grey the darker one- and it’s simultaneously a clip and a bar. A clip on top and a bar attached to the clip.) they could’ve molded it in red or if you want orange feet it’s also been molded in orange]
      And you could use that for the foot
      🤘 🪝
      T
      Key:
      (Foot attachment area)🤘that whole section above
      🪝 the innermost unfused toe
      T= the piece in the set they molded in tan.
      If this is confusing to you, same here. I couldn’t type this coherently and I apologize.

      @QuartetofCrickets149 Місяць тому +7

      To be fair, the lego models sort of get an excuse for being harder to make. Like, you have to really think about what pieces go together properly to end up coming out looking like these animals, and the result isn't always going to be perfect. Of course they still could've done better with some of these, like the shark fins that Clint put on "backwards". He shouldn't have needed to put them on "backwords" because they should've been in that direction to begin with. But overall, designing lego builds for animals has to be a lot more challenging than doing a little bit of research and creating battle stories for animals.

  • @ElMoppo1
    @ElMoppo1 Місяць тому +267

    Lego has a lot of logistical reasons for colour choices sometimes. The colours used in one set are often influenced by other sets in production, so if there's not enough other sets that require those pieces in orange, they might just chose another colour instead of starting a new production run of that piece in that colour, as that's an extra cost to add to production.
    Also, in the LEGO Friends series, there was recently a botanical greenhouse set that included an Amorphophallus titanum, so in name at least, that is the first phallus officially produced by LEGO that I'm aware of. Their Creator series Tiger, on the other hand, has the first LEGO set with an anus!

      Orange or red-orange for the feet would’ve required 3 recolored pieces, but the cattle horns and bar holders with clips already are produced in red, so then the only recolor would’ve been the t-piece, and they had to recolor that anyway to get tan. I wonder if they have some upcoming sets that use the t-piece in tan, and that was the reason/compromise? Or if someone decided that Lego tan was closer than Lego red for the kingfisher feet? (I don’t see it, but maybe someone would think that.) Or if they just goofed?

  • @chrisball3778
    @chrisball3778 Місяць тому +95

    No artificial colour can truly match that of a kingfisher. Like some hummingbirds, bee-eaters, sunbirds and others, they're iridescent. Their feathers refract light like a prism. When they flit out over the water and the sun's light hits them at just the right angle they're like a living fireworks display. They sear your retinas like burning magnesium, they sparkle over the water and they disappear down the river with a shrill shriek and a trail of blue and red. The Halcyon, the King of Birds.

    I bit over 20 years ago, my spouse and I bought a small existing bookstore. The day we took over the store, there was a kingfisher (belted, not common) perched on a power line over the street in front. We decided at that moment to named the store "Kingfisher Used Books". In February of this year, we closed the store and retired. A friend of mine commemorated the event by giving me a Lego Kingfisher set. I haven't put it together yet, due to the upheaval of trying to rehouse the accumulated flotsam of a nearly 3000 square foot business, but I was happy to see that you consider it to be fairly accurate. I look forward to settling down with it when we manage to unearth the dining table.

    My favorite part of lego sets is when they used parts from one random set for another, unrelated set, and it works out well. My favorite is the use of 100 pink frogs in the bonsai set made to look like cherry blossoms!

    I think the reason the bottom in the butterfly is not as detailed/realstic is bc these, very much like the art-piece and architecture series legos, are the kind you put on a shelf or in a glass case to be on display from the more "pretty" angle. Which in butterlfies tends to be the upper part of the wings where they have colour, and ofc it's when they've got their wings spread.

    Re: the backwards dorsal fins on the shark, I had to do a similar thing with a Lego dinosaur set I got as a gift last year. For whatever reason, Lego made the triceratops' forelimbs longer than the hind limbs. It looked so much better, not to mention more accurate, after I switched them around.

      @@killdozer7792 I don't think it's a cost issue, though, as fixing the mistake is simply a matter of rotating/repositioning pieces already included in the sets.

    countershading also has another benefit when seen from side-on-- it obscures the shadows which the creature casts on its own body making it all appear to be one uniform color (i.e. the dark part in bright light and the bright part in low light are perceived as the same color to the eye). This makes its overall shape more difficult to discern.

    Correction:
    The antlers of moose and Deer *ARE* Alive, at least until they're shed. horns do indeed have a Living Core that *Grows* the dead keratinous horn around it, but Antlers differ in that it isn't Keratin that grows on their surface, but Skin & Fur.
    You can even see when they near the Yearly shedding period, the Skin & Fur does indeed start to die and peel off, leading up to when the entire bony antler structure breaks off and will eventually start to grow back the following year.
    but as they're growing, they're entirely and completely alive, Fuzzy, warm to the touch, and completely full of Blood, which circulates throughout the Antler to keep it growing.
    The only reason some deer/moose/Cervid skulls still have antlers is that the animal was likely killed only while the Antlers were still growing or at least just before they began to shed.

Since reptile keeping has a large following and I would imagine that the cross over between Lego fans and reptile keepers is fairly large. The response I got was "they can not talk about future sets." So, we have a chance. Maybe if MORE people email Lego and ask for reptile sets we will see this come to pass.

    As a fellow lego nerd this video was so exciting to see pop up in my recommendations, and the sheer enthusiasm absolutely dripping from this video is so noticeable. You’re an excellent presenter. Combining all the little details hidden away in lego sets with analysis of how they translate to the little details of the real animals is such a genius idea. This is probably the best video I’ve watched all week, and probably longer. My only gripe is the use of the “legos” instead of “lego” xD. Thanks for the great content!
    Would love to see you cover the new fox 3 in 1 set as well as the gazelle alternate model for the giraffe! We’ve been getting spoiled lately with so many amazing animal Lego builds, it feels like the quality has exploded leaps and bounds above what was the case even only a few years ago, especially regarding the 3 in 1 sets (as can be proven by the shark build that you were not a fan of since that is a set that was released in 2019).

    just gonna add my two cents as an artist:
    I assume that the reason for weirdly tan feet is due to colour blocking, meaning that if you were to make more realistically reddish, it would blend into orange of the belly.
    personally, I would have opted for black and called it a juvenile bird 😅
