"-12 Decibels"? Usually that's -18 - the setting most analog plugins respond best to. I'm also a little surprised you are not using the Normalize function in Logic that let's you change the gain on audio tracks to, say -18, all in one fell swoop.
Plug in manufacturers vary. I've seen everything from -18 decibels to -12 decibels. If I keep everything at Peak volume at -12, everything between -20 and -10, I'm within the range of The Sweet Spot for plugins. I didn't explain this very well, so thanks for clarifying. I try to avoid all of the logic editing stuff because it's usually destructive. Not sure about this function in particular.
The objective part is like a target. You need to get on the target, but anywhere on the target will do. Most beginning mixers can't even get it on the target to begin with. There are factors that prevent automation - such as the unique arrangement of various songs that prevent "templatization", but there are still objective rules that we can follow to ensure these songs sound quality.
