Aftermarket Lighting Upgrades for Model Kits!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2018
- We take a field trip the garage and workshop of modelmaker Randy Neubert, who runs VoodooFX. Randy designs lighting and electronic upgrades to off-the-shelf model kits, including a few of our favorite kits we've built recently. We chat with Randy about his lighting process and what goes into designing a lighting scheme that'll look great on camera and on our shelves.

Thanks for watching! - Наука та технологія
I loved seeing Randy's workspace. The fact that a guy working in a garage is showing off his business and doing this great work for people really helps make those of us without big shops feel great.
i have one of your lighting kits for my millennium falcon. i'm not an electronics genius ... nor have i ever soldered before... but the instructions were easy to follow and i love the results. thank you so much for making these kits...i couldn't be more happy.
👍🏼💚👏🏼LOVE this company. Been buying these lighting kits for years now. I'm glad they're still around and going strong. Hope many more people and new generations of hobbyists keep Randy's work going for many years to come!
I love Randy's work. I have purchased kits from him over the years. I met him a few years back at a model convention hanging out with Bill George. Great Video!
I am so glad I have found these Tested model building episodes. I am absolutely geeking out. These are fantastic videos!
2 awesome dudes talking models and lighting. Love it.
Really love Norm's enthusiasm, really shines through in these interviews - and Tested as a whole! Great insights into builders, modeling and sci-fi fandom! Thanks guys!
I used to get slightly annoyed by Norms constant questions till I realised those where the questions I wanted answering :D
It is absolutely right that model making is a (smallish) community and I think you do a lot of great work for it @ Tested. That's not why I started watching Tested but it's definitely what I stick around for now.
like that steam engine episode recently, i've seen model train museums and the like, but have never seen realistic but also steam powered ones. coal fired? holy shit right? i'm so glad tested is seeking these folks out to make little video entries on them.
omg thank you for this. its super hard to find affordable lighting kits. been looking everywhere for bsg lighting kits and this guy has them at a very affordable price. definitely getting the 5th element multi-pass kits and 5th element key as well.
nice guy, great work. I really enjoy finding new things that I had no idea I was interested in.
Wot a great video...and a great model as well...so nice to see the little boy in all of us in this...well done guys
Great job, those models are lit!
Amazing work
Great show! I love the channel.
These models are LIT!
I love what Randy and other's in this field do for the hobby. Kudos to him he does inspire. My issue with these after market lighting kits is the cost. They are very expensive. I understand they are limited in qty which drives cost up and most importantly these kits do give you a plug and play experience. That said it really isn't difficult to create your own lighting effects for next to nothing. Creating lighting animations, etc. are very easy to do now. Consider it a challenge and just give it a try. If you don't care about costs and just want lights without thought then buy one of these kits. It's really up to you. My main point is stated to encourage those who might not otherwise know just how easy lighting kits is.
Cool stuff!
Great video! Would love to see you guys show off some of the DIY lighting setups for FFG's Miniatures games (X-Wing, Armada).
Damn, just gorgeous!
And the award for Best Job in the World goes to...this guy!
Is there any lighting kits out for Hasbro labs Vintage collection N1 or Slave 1?
nice show n' tell - but it would be awesome to see a walk through on setting up the circuits and mounting them in the model
Norm. I know it is now 2020 but where did you get that amazing t? The Macintosh one?
Where can I find the pegasus hobby kits?
Is there any plans to make a lighting kit for MPC's Knight Industries 2000 (K.I.T.T.) kit now that Round 2 has been selling those again the last few years? It needs the chase lights and head/tail lights bad.
BTW, loved the "read the instructions" comment, used to work for a hobby shop and saw people do that with nitro fueled R/C vehicles.....
..
Does he have a kit for a 1/32 scale f4 phantom?
...Off Topic a little, but what make/model, is that Yellow Tool Box, behind ?.
17:37 Provides a fairly well representative summary. Quite nuanced.
what's the white ship top left??
Love it!! I have just started building models myself and it’s so awesome, just wondering if you had any ideas for using the left overs trays that hold the kits? I would love to use them for something and would like to know if you use them for anything or if you had any ideas 💡?
keep them for kit bashing
On the "Seaview" model.......you could use a small MV lens on the back of the fins.
LOVE IT!
Is Norm standing on uneven ground or a wobble board?
Ice blue LEDs are actually white LEDs shifted more to the blue end and include a tiny bit of green and yellow.
whats the ship at 0:57?
What a nice guy.
Whoa that scratch-built spaceship is AMAZING. Really impressive work.
Makes me want to have a go!
I knew you could make it better than some cheap plastic!
Good dude!
WOW SO COOL.
Hi norm form tested, it's Semo from the comment section.
When I purchased a 1:350 refit Enterprise my wife thought I was MAD for wanting to incorporate more that its cost of lighting into it. With a model that big though, that’s the ONLY way to do it.
1:11 Flashbacks to This old house... Haha!
LOL!
Norm with his breathy wows towards miniature lights.....!
Any gunpla lighting kits?
One thing that wasn't done in this video was to show us the inside of one of the kits to see an example of the lighting system wiring and how things were mounted.
Do kit bashing for Silver Shell Fighting Tops please?
Can you make the biggoron sword or the master sword from legend of zelda plz
Soooooo.....where are the lighting kits??
What's available?? Where can I find and purchase????
As the guy said, voodoo FX.... voodoofx.com
I'm much more interested in the Slimer on his wall, looks like it was take from the original molds!
Guys hands are huge from working out so much
Thumbnail pic is the submarine Proteus from fantastic voyage 0:
You should try to make a Quadsuit
if you could do one for a gundam. you`ll be rolling in it
Seeing the Eagle Transporter from Space 1999 was poignant, in light of yesterday's announcement of the sad death of Zienia Merton, who played Sandra Benes on the show. She had recently completed an audiobook version of a Doctor Who story she starred in with William Hartnell. She knew she was dying, but summoned up the strength to finish the job. A truly classy lady.
PageMonster • I saw that too. That was my favorite show when I was 7 years old.
How many takes for the "Hi, Norm, howzit going?" handshake?
PRETEND THAT IS JUST ONE AND STOP ASKING LIKE THE REST OF US
If Kubrick directed it ,267 times.
Fixed in post.
norm asking a question and then sort of answering it himself
Please do One day build!!!!!
I’m building a 1:350 scale Titanic and added lighting. Most difficult build I’ve done.
What ship is at 56 secs?
Any help
Must be nice to be able to afford models like these.
Teach me sensei
Genial work art desingner
0:54... Is that what I think it is? Looks like the mini boats used in Treasure Planet.
definitely Mr. Kim's noodle boat from Fifth element ua-cam.com/video/o5u6vg0dHJs/v-deo.html
I'd like to do an entire fleet of Federation starships lit up.
Cool
Wow, it must have been hard before leds.

randycoopermodelsdesign.squarespace.com 1/64TH SCALE (L 19.5" W 18.5" ) PHOENIX $310.00
it took 19:08 for norm to geekgasm
I feel like the thumbnail showing the watch mislead me into thinking this was an Adam Savage video.
Richard Kolb whats wrong with my boy norm?
They know they'll get at least 10 times the views if people think Adam is in the video
Yeah man, we need more Adam!
Norm is fine, Adam usually seems more interested.
So do you want a "WARNING: this is not an Adam video" icon on thumbnails now?
This is nothing, check out the guy of trekworks , he is truly a master model builder.
"Most people aren't comfortable running fiber."
Huh? I find running fiber off a single source quite a bit easier than running individual wires and led's and resistors to each point, especially at smaller scales. If you've never lit with fiber...learn.
Sorry Randy. Love yah, but 17:37 Made me laugh so hard.
I also build lights and sound into my models. Whish I could also earn money with it. This hobby isn´t that much esteemed here in Germany, so just a few people are willing to pay for a lot of work cause they see it more as a toy and don´t realize that this takes a lot of time an knowledge to build.
Feels like some kind of paralympic version of model making...
Pretty Nifty.
3Dfx 2.0?
Shonkey seamwork: ua-cam.com/video/-aMEm9uxFh0/v-deo.htmlm34s
i tried building a model once..
So many fire hazards and code violations around that gas water heater...
Adam should check out Randal Cooper. His lighting and model building is on a level far superior to, and well beyond Randy's capabilities. Nothing personal, but I wouldn't want him anywhere near the original Enterprise.
0:53 The Asian food "truck" from the Fifth Element.

You're making me buy more stuff...stop showing us cool things.
Still no VR video............................ :(
Sometimes when I accidentally get tricked into clicking on a Norm video I hastily thumbs down and get the hell out. Today I decided to watch a little but nothing seem to have changed. He still likes to hijack his own interview and answer his own questions, or ask a super long question that only requires a yes/no answer. More Adam please!
1:11 This part was scripted, wasn't it?
Everyone needs a hobby. If you can make a living doing it, You have made the grade for this society. An A+ or a 10 being that society is run on the point system or grade system. Which by the way is the worst way to live your life and its that way by design. imo.
The only light I use to light my models up, is the one in the fridge. I can't leave my model parts in room temperature, because they start to rot........ I'm a serial killer...... I kill models.
Fuck, lol.
65 year old female here. And I have been building morals since I was eight years old. Definitely not a guy.
Baps n paste , n coarn doag. Peace on Earth n earth on Piece. Butchers hough n tinkys gochells, wha can tell the difference?

You what?
EH broo .
Yeah man...
Zaaaakly ! Ploon !

Norm - Love TESTED but give the guest a chance to talk without your endless questions... He'll answer probably all of them if you take a breath. Rather annoying at times.
yay a 50+ minute commercial at the beginning of this video... please youtube, stop this shit
Terrible game: Drink every time they say the word "model."
he got the enterprise nacelles switched on his model.... what a screwup.
First comment
Epicfacemaster ! Congrats! That will cure the problems all over the world
Epicfacemaster ! That and a quarter will buy you a gumball.
Why is this dude moving so weirdly in the intro? He looks possessed
Cant stand him. This channel would suck if it wasnt for Adam.
JeZz4k HD, you are talking about Norm? Hes not so bad. I can at least look at Norm and not feel sick. Some other youtube people im subscribed to, are so bad that i have to immediately switch to another tab, so that i dont have to look at their faces. The content is good, so I still occasionally listen to their videos. Like for example, SciShow and Crash Course. One of their hosts is this sleepy eyed woman who looks like she does not wash her hair. She also has nose ring that makes it appear as if a drop of snot was dangling from her nose. Another of their hosts is this short fat woman with forward facing nostrils. I call her, miss piggy. And jet another of their hosts is a skinny man with googly eyes that looks like goblin.... So yeah, Norm is okay in my books.
Its not about how anyone looks.
A nerd for a nerds jobs
Point me in the direction of the forward facing nostril woman please, I'm very fuckin' intrigued.....!
