  • Despite a lot of their recent entries being chosen internally, Belgium has a long national final history that dates back all the way to 1956 and has only been interrupted on few occasions. With this video, I want to give you a quick recap of all the songs that finished second in Belgian national finals and therefore almost made it to the Eurovision stage!

About 1979, reportedly Micha Marah really wanted to take Comment Ça Va to Eurovision and hated Hey Nana, to the point that she tried to get the latter disqualified and threatened that she wouldn't perform it, even after she travelled to Israel. The Belgian delegation had even made a special request for another singer (I think one of the backups) to sing Hey Nana if Micha refused to do it on the day of the show.

The part about Micha refusing to sing Hey Nana was debunked by Micha herself in a podcast a few years ago.
It was a rumour started by the composer of Hey Nana (Charles Dumolin) to get back at Micha for trying to get Hey Nana disqualified because of plagiarism. Part of Hey Nana is identical to the song Auntie from 1972 celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the BBC.
The broadcaster believed him and asked Nancy Dee (indeed one of the backing singers) to replace Micha if needed. Micha said she never had the plan to not sing the song, since it was a huge opportunity for her to perform in Eurovision.
In fact, she herself, didn't hear about this rumour untill after the contest when she was already back in Belgium.

For those who wonder: I'm Flemish (Dutch-speaking Belgian) and the songs from 1971, 1989 and 2004 are still regularly aired on the radio. From that list, those are the 3 biggest hits...

1956 apparently had a national final, but nobody knows much about it, aside from the fact that Fud Leclerc and Mony Marc won it.

    Some corrections:
The 2nd place in the 1974 national final (which funnily, is just called 'Jacques Hustin' in TV guides from the time) was "On dit de toi, on dit de moi"
The 2nd place in the 1978 national final was "L'an 2000 c'est demain"
The 2nd place in the 1986 national final was "Tout, je donne tout"
The 1967 and 1971 national finals were called Canzonissima, the 1968 national final was called Avant-Premiere Eurovision, the 1970 national final was called Chansons Euro '70, the 1973 national final was called Liedje Voor Luxemburg, the 1982 national final was called Palmarès, and the 1984 national final was called Concours Eurovision de la Chanson '84 - Finale Nationale.
Also, the 1961 and 1968 2nd places do exist as they were released on vinyl but since no one has digitised them and uploaded them online yet they are still lost media.

I’ll keep a look out for the 1961 and 1968 records… 1968 I’ll be able to get done within the month. 1961 seems rather rare.

Agreed, it has many favorites among the fans like: Judy et Cie(1976), Sanomi(2003) and Rhythm Inside(2015).

I think you skipped 2013 and Roberto Bellarosa's "Reste Toi", I remember really liking that song and thinking Belgium made a big mistake by not choosing it (that seemed to be a running theme in 2013 national finals btw, so many bad choices in my opinion). "Love Kills" ended 12th, only 13 points away from top10 so I guess I was wrong.
Of course cool video, quite a few of these songs sound more interesting than the actual entries, I think the biggest mistake was not allowing Closeau perform in 1989, "Anne" was so much better than "Geef het op"

In 1969, “Jennifer Jennings” got all of the votes, while the others got no points. Although “Vanessa I Love You” was the only song that was recorded, footage exists of Neefs shortly singing all of the songs. ua-cam.com/video/Gjl2TqXKyJ4/v-deo.html
The live audio for the 1973 song in its NF also exists ua-cam.com/video/MlFEGtR6eXs/v-deo.html

Micha Marah would have done a lot better in 1979 with 'Comment ça va'. It's very much modern for the time, even if 'Hey Nana' isn't that bad. Belgium could have got a top 10 in 1971 with Ann Christy and 'Femme' out of Serge and Christine's selection in 1972. Those two are probably one of the best Belgian national final songs of all time. Ingriani had a more modern song in 1975 that was third. Trinity would have been a great choice. Love that style of music. Pas de Deux were deserved in 1983, but should have done better at the contest. I think Clouseau would have done better in 1989 even if Ingeborg had a good song. Belinda may have got a top 15 in 1995. Wendy may have done well in 1999. I prefer Spark over Sergio. Natalia would have done better than Xandee as would have Petra / La Sakhra over Kate Ryan. Sandrine would have got to the final in 2008. Not sure about 2011. Might have got some sympathy votes for being blind and it sounds like Kate Bush. Iris had the wrong song in 2012, but that would have not done well. Right choice in 2016 even if Tom is easy on the eye. I liked The Starlings song this year, but Gustaph was the right choice.
