This week’s An Album A Day theme is, “Covers! Covers! Covers!” That is, albums that feature unique arrangements or interpretations of recognize able songs. And what better way to kick off the new week than with an album that is comprised entirely of covers! Sadly I don’t know too much about this album, but it was released in 1971 by BCG Records (as far as I know they don’t have any other releases). According to the liner notes it was recorded at KINTEL Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The “band” was pretty minimal, with Betsy performing acoustic guitar and singing alongside Pam Rose (lead guitar), and Laymon Jackson (bass). The songs were written by Tim Hardin, Bob Dylan (two songs), Leonard Cohen (two songs), John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins and Ian Tyson.
Although plenty of pictures of the album cover exist online, not much in the way of biographical information is available on Betsy. It’s a shame this Betsy Legg isn’t the recording artist or I might be more inclined to ask about that album she recorded back in the early 70s. Then again, when was the last time I posted a private-press LP and had a plethora of information about the artist? It doesn’t happen all that often. Usually I put out the call for someone else to contact me if they know more, and maybe 70% of the time someone comes through. Other than that, it’s kind of up in the air when it comes to learning about who Betsy is (was?) and what became of her.
As for the songs? They’re pretty good! It’s hard to get an idea of her talent when she’s playing other people’s songs, but she’s an adequate guitarist with a decent voice. It’d be interesting to learn if Betsy ever wrote her own songs. And why didn’t she use the correct song title for “Famous Blue Raincoat” if she was going to give Cohen credit for writing that tune? I mean, that’s probably the least important question I’d ever ask Betsy, but I think it’s funny the song bears a different title…~

Sometimes, for whatever reason, the YT algorithm will hand you a gem.
You're absolutely right Mary, how are you doing?
One of Lightfoot's best songs. Betsy does it proud.
Wow. This version of this song is likely the best that I've ever heard. Her voice is amazing.
How in the world I had I never heard of her until now? This was the time of my folk song period and only now does she come up. Better late than never. Her voice brings back a flood of memories from that era.
She has one of those voices that grabs your attention and begs you to stop and enjoy for a little while
This song came to my mind for no reason today. It took me some meditating before I could remember the name and lyrics to look up the song. There was a Canadian band in the 90s out of Toronto named Moxy Fruvous. They did a beautiful acapella duet of this song with wonderful harmonies. I listened to several versions of this song, and this was the closest to their version but without the harmony. They must have heard her version. I should see if she is Canadian
73 yrs. old ! Never heard of her. Just goes to show.
I’m 68, same here. The album cover brings me back to my teen years, though.
79 me either!
"A decent voice" ❓❓❓
It's absolutely stunning ... 💟
what a beautiful version
Very joan baez, beautiful!
There must be 'hundreds' of ladies like this, and all worth a listen.
Her singing makes me feel like I'm walking barefoot with sunshine all around me.
Ah, the ‘70’s. How I miss them.
@@virginiaviola5097 BOTH OF YOU SHOULD LAY OFF THE DRUGS!
Spoken like someone who lives where fire ants have not invaded...
@@seanseoltoir 😂 Very true!
Her voice reminds me of Joan Baez.
Perfectly balanced between Joni Michell and Joan Baez, her voice is as as clear as the summer sky.
I agree….so clear and beautiful.
And, if you haven’t heard a a young artist in England named Lucy Thomas, she has a similar clear singing voice. She is a rising young star. She has many videos here on YT. I think my favorite is Desperado.
softer than Baez, and stronger than Joni Mitchell. Perfect. Just perfect.
I never heard of her before now. I'm so glad I found this. Thank you so much for sharing with the world.
mee too!
Me too..wow❤
Same here, I'd never heard her before and I used to think I'd heard all of the great talents of that era!
same here
its excellent
Copyright's a bugger, isn't it 😄
UA-cam, bring you the music you love but never new existed.

Gordon Lightfoot was such a great songwriter. We won't see another like him again. We are just fortunate to have shared the Earth with him for a time.
I really miss the 70's life as a teenager back then was so much simpler than now, there seemed to be more to look forward to back then
I'd hate to be a teenager in 2023, there seems to be nothing for them now
I absolutely agree with you,our generation was very lucky enjoying true beauty, love and peaceful times ( at least in the west) with a dream soundtrack, not to mention gastronomy and good health...I wish you the best, brother
Wthis popped up in my feed and I'm so glad it did, it's a beautiful tune and what a beautiful clear voice
WUNDERSCHÖN ❤
I love this song and I don’t believe I have ever heard of this artist. Boy it puts me back to a certain time and space. ❤
Me too.
Oh yes! Friends faces all rush back, long ago, and far away. I wish them all well, wherever they are. We had the best of times.
Yes it is. The world seemed vage but quiiet, bautiful and real.
Written by the great Gordon Lightfoot
@@stevebengel1346 indeed.
Beautiful voice.
I remember this from my high school graduation days but I never knew who sang it until now... Those were the days of Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell...etc...
60's, 70's the golden age of music and songwriters.
How Beautiful
RIP GORDON LIGHTFOOT and thank you for all your beautiful music :)))
Reminds me of when I was posted to Aden for 2 years in 1966 and being parted from my girl.... never did see her again...
It's called melody folks and is one of the foundations of music that stands the test of time - RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
it's morning. it's raining. y'all went your way.
I used to play in the same club, in Atlanta, that Betsy played in. I always loved her voice and style. She is one of a kind.
There’s zero info about her on the Internet. Could you share any?
He wouldn’t have anything that any liar couldnt make up on the spot…
“Played the same club “Im calling some minor BS …🫡
@@Skylarking00 most useful info you'll get by following the posters' link in the description. Recorded in Georgia (even if this non-American don't hear any southern accent) plus some session players. Bit of websearch found a 73 year old Betsy Legg (b 1950) up in Ashtabula, Lake Erie, not quite next door to Atlanta.
There isn't much information about her. What was the name of the club in Atlanta?
I remember seeing her at Dante's Down the Hatch in Underground Atlanta around 1976.
Wow. She should have been famous. The song creates the true emotions of such experiences.
This is a Gordon Lightfoot classic. Gordon wrote many great songs, some of them also played by different artists, such as Elvis. Gordon was born in 1938 In Orillia Ontario and still tours and performs as of this date. Update: Gordon died May 1 2023 in Sunny Brook Hospital in Toronto.
I saw him in his prime 74 or 75 at the Opry House in Nashville.
Great artist.
The Edmund Fitzgerald. Can't get any better listening to Gordon and that song.
One of the all time greatest singer/songwriter/performers
@@Astro_touches_children yep.....
What a crystal clear beautiful voice.
Agreed.
No masculine harmonics. V6x kills these voices. 🤣
Beautiful song, just Love the female folk artists of that era.
Joni Mitchell…Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Mimi Farina, Ian and Sylvia, Buffy St Marie…..Hedge and Donna…..
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 My fave of your list: Ian & Sylvia. I was fortunate to meet Sylvia a couple of times when she was touring with Cindy Church and the late Rankin sister who sang so beautifully way up high. Their blend and vibe was perfect art-if there is such a thing. I wonder if Sylvia is still singing. If so, I must look to see where she is playing these days.

Yesss, she and Joan ,voices unforgetables
Kind of a cross between Joan and Anne Murray.
Yes yes yes ... :))) I am mad after Joan Baez
@@bellgab not related to this comment, but do you also like Judy Collins? I like her!
She looks like her!!
I forgot her. Been a while. Hearing the Melody brought back summer memories. Yes..a liitle of Joan...
Never heard of her. The algorithm brought me to this song. It's gorgeous! What a lovely voice!
Hard to believe that so many have never heard of this lady!
So much beauty lost to the wind
Such a pure voice. It just carries the song along like water in a brook.
Any fans of Judee Sill here? Another unique artist of similar vintage. But Betsy, this is my first time hearing her. Very sweet and authentic. TY for sharing.
What a beautiful find!!!❤️🎼🎶🎵🦋🦋🦋a gift for me this morning 🌄✌️🌻
I heard her play and sing one night in some small joint in Underground Atlanta in the spring of 1977 or 1978. I was 1000 miles from home in Atlanta for some fool professional convention or another, and I never rencountered her again. Besides being talented, she was cordial, stopping at my table for a few minutes of chit chat. In those days, there was plenty of good local talent around the country that would not tour much. But it is surprising that there are 692 comments here with such a scarcity of info turning up.
I’m born in the late 70s but this girl reminds me of a great time .
Smiles, how are you doing Fiona?
Beautiful song, beautifully sung.
Beautiful woman, very beautiful voice! It's a pity she didn't have a more noteworthy career.
Chills. What a beautiful rendition.
I've always loved this song, but Damn... What a beautiful voice!
Man, that takes me back to the good days of music.😢
Man, that takes me back to the good old days of "real" music.
It took me 2 seconds to go from what the h*** is this, to I love this rendition!❤

If this doesn't take you back to the 60's, nothing will. Beautiful!
Wonderful voice
Just love these dreamy imaginary simple folksy tunes of the late 60s/early 70s......
Written by Gordon Lightfoot and on his first album in 1966. Wonderful song.
R.I.P Gordon Lightfoot. He passed away on May 1 2023 in Sunny Brook Hospital in Toronto.

The artist and arrangement are things of ethereal beauty. Not much of that afoot in 2023!May God help us all in this Fourth Turning !
My Lord I was not expecting something so beautiful!
I thought I was familiar with the work of all the lesser known folk artists of the 60s, but this comes straight out of nowhere to me. I would have loved to have known about her back then and been able to appreciate this album all these decades. The set list on the label is fantastic. Thank you for the post.
Hello Katt,
I too am into some of the lesser known folk artist's from the 1960's.
Are you familiar with Dayle Stanley? I have known about her for a very long time. She was from Massachusetts and two wonderful LP's in the 1960's.
You can hear her songs from both albums on UA-cam. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago now and never had any other records other then the two released in the 1960's.
kaat.......the is the Canadian Icon Gordon Lightfoots song from 1964 that made it to the onto the charts by a number of artists including Bob Dylan.
I stand with you, Kaat. I wish I would have known about her back in the 60's.

Hi Carole,
I'm hoping that someone seeing all these posts of interest in Betsy Legg will know something, maybe knows her, etc and will post a message.
Do you still listen to folk music? I do, all the time. Besides all the well known folk artist's and folk groups, I know of many obscure ones too.
@@carolerichoux4891 Carole -- There was an album I had back in 1974 that came out in 1970 on a San Francisco label by a female vocalist named Victoria, called The Secret of the Bloom, kind of a folk-country feel, and I always loved it. There's a nice version of Warren Zevon's "Tule's Blues" and Stephen Stills' "Helplessly Hoping," but my favorite song on it is the second cut on Side A, called "Out in the County" (usually mistyped as Country). I think there may be some Internet info on her, can't remember. But if this message allows me to I will paste the UA-cam link to her album that somebody uploaded. Scratches and pops, and much, much better listening on your own record player, but it suffices. It the link isn't here, just search UA-cam for Victoria - Secret of the Bloom and it will take you right there. I think she had a second album, but not sure it was ever released. Love her voice. - KaatClove ua-cam.com/video/MjH5RFByJoM/v-deo.html
Another classic
Thank you
Why wasn’t she all over the radios. Beautiful voice
Payola 😮
Because she is just singing the songs that hundreds of others were performing that time.
because the "music industry" is a fixed game. Everything is fixed and YOU can't change it. Sit there and suck it up.
She sounds a whole lot like Joni Mitchell, don't you think? It's hilarious, seeing everybody in the comments skirting the issue.
@@DerpRulesAll She don't sound a bit like Joni. When ever i hear Joni Mitchell i projectile vomit. I don't do that with this singer.
She is simply breath taking. My Hammock under a Southern oak music.
I was so spoiled by the Chicago area artists of that period, that i didn't search further. Thank you for your submission.
Perfect voice of a virtuoso. Best ever performance of this song or any folk song. Wow! A real treat. Eternal fame for Gordon Lightfoot too.
Thank you for sharing
I'm another that didn't know of Betsy . She sung the song so beautifully ! Thank you for bringing her to my attention.
Smiles, how are you doing Sandra?
This song brings back so many memories. Beautiful.
WOW! I've never heard of her before. I'm a big Fan of 60's & 70's Folk Rock and I guess, she slipped past me! LOL!! Very good voice.

💕 I Iove the finger picking too .. ah the memories ..
Smiles, hi Linda 👋
thank you
Beautifull warm lovely voice had forgotten about her😊
it takes so much work to achieve artistry so it's good to preserve whatever of it that we can.
I didn't know the lady. Decided to listen because I happen to love the song (know both the Gordon Lightfoot and Peter, Paul, and Mary versions). Her voice and version is beautiful.
The version by Jerry Lee Lewis is good, too.
For me it was the Dylan version that had me pause...Did Little Richard roll it out?
Chad and Jeremy too
Thanks
Thanks, needed this right now.
Gordon Lightfoot was a formidable talent. His songs should live on for generations.
Beautiful song - voice - phrasing and a beautiful girl.
A first class rendition - just beautiful 💟
Never heard this beautiful voice before, so beautiful.
Smiles, hi Rosemarie 👋
This brings back times of good memories with my guitar in high school!
Powerful lyrics no matter what kind of music you prefer to listen too.
There are many songs that could easily cross over the line, could by play on any station.
One of the first songs I learned on guitar in summer school ‘72. Still a fave! Dig that travis picking 🌻
I've never known of her, even though I was brought up in the sixties and seventies around all kinds of music. I would have listened to her a lot!
I like her much better than Joan Baez. Not that I tend to pit artists against each other, but I could listen to this ethereal, earthy, humble, honest, comfident voice forever.
fell into this by accident A WONDERFUL RENDITION of gordons song rip fella
She is amazing. She does the song justice.
Hello from Sweden 🇸🇪 peace 🕊
Wow. What a beautiful voice
As a flight crew this song touched me thank you for sharing !
This is heartbreakingly beautiful
Listening to Betsy Legg I close my eyes and hear Joan Baez. Both ladies have magnificent voices.
This is the first version of this song that made me feel like crying.
I grew up in Detroit. Gordon had an affinity with the city and often performed there. He also used to sing at the University of Windsor and we would go see him there. Sometimes, when I was in college, we would drive to Toronto to see him.
I absolutely love this! Betsy's voice is like angels singing. That is a long forgotten style that I attempt to keep alive every time I perform.Thank You Betsy for your inspiration and vision!
that's beautiful
Wow….I was so into this style of music…from 1964-1970 or so, but I never heard of this artist. But question: never heard of psych folk. That wa not a term we used back then. But if anyone qualifies for that designation, it would be Donovan. This is straight up Folk genre….pure and simple.
Or PF Sloane, look up his "Divinations".
So good, English indie rocker Thom Yorke and Radiohead (which themselves at times could quality as Psych) decided to lift the melody for their Street Spirit.
Wow! Such a clear voice. Like a violin. Reminds me of Judy Collins.
My dad played this song when I was a young child. I didn't know any better and thought he wrote the song. Not that he said he wrote it, but childhood assumptions. Gorgeous piece of music. Hadn't heard of Betsy before this video, but she sounds great.
We sang a simple version of this in basic training in the 70s. We just echoed back what the drill sergeants sang. Good times.
Lovely, dont know why I havent heard of her before now.
1:32 just discovered her this moment❤
This is my first introduction to this heartfelt soul. I walk away better for it. Thanks Betsy.
