Title: In Search of Global Ireland: Locating the Irish Diaspora in the Decade of Commemorations
Delivered by Dr Darragh Gannon of Queen's University Belfast
To an audience invited by Universtiy of St Michael's College
Organised by Dr. Mark G. McGowan Professor of History, University of Toronto Interim Principal & Vice-President, University of St. Michael's College
Does the Irish Revolution, as the possessive case suggests, belong to histories and historians of Ireland alone? Integrating research from archives in ten countries, Dr. Gannon advances the argument that the Irish Revolution was not only an Anglophone experience; it was not only a Western experience; indeed, it was not only an Irish experience. Charting the contours of ‘global Ireland’ during the Irish Revolution, he submits, requires scholars to follow the historical lines of latitude and longitude set by Irish nationalists and unionists a century ago. The global Irish histories of the early twentieth century raise critical questions of Global Ireland’s potential directions in the twenty-first. How can we identify, and make accessible sources of migration between Ireland and Canada? How can we identify, and make tangible, the lived experiences of global Irish communities? How can we identify, and make visible, historic connections between Canada and Ireland? How can we identify, and make representative, twenty-first century varieties of Irishness? In a series of important centenary reflections, finally, Dr. Gannon’s inaugural lecture offers new transnational perspectives to these commemorative questions from the fields of archives, education, media, and policy.
