In Italy, we have to study all of the three parts of Dante's journey, across the last three years of highschool. I believe this is one of the best things ever written by a human being. PS: Virgil was the poet who wrote the "Aeneid", and was considered to be the best writer ever by Dante: he was such a fanboy
It's part of our culture! It is actually the first work that has ever been written in modern Italian language. Dante has a special place in everyone's heart here in Italy💓
The first fan fiction from Dante. Of course he feels a "connection" to Virgil what with Virgil being Dantes literal man crush and all time hero. His one issue is his hatred for Greek mythical hero's and his total loyalty to all Roman heroes. It's funny seeing how he deals with the ones that the Romans converted into their own versions.
@@ghintz2156 I'm not aware if it's Italian today but it was a very Roman centered view of the world. Even though he wasn't from Rome he seems to have been quite the Rome obsessive and one of those who only ever saw the good bits of Rome and ignored the rest. So basically anything after around 200CE...
He did this bc he considered Rome the city of corruption, especially Pope Bonifacio VIII who was still alive when Dante wrote the comedy, and he doesn't miss a chance to compare the corrupted Rome to the ancient honest Florence (especially with Cacciaguida in paradise)
I find two things interesting about this tale: 1. Despite being rooted in judeochristian lore the story sure takes a lot of influence from Greek mythology, basically making both intersect in a shared universe. 2. Greek heroes that were praised for being cunning and clever in Greek myths, are ostracized in this tale for being considered mischievous from a Christian perspective at the time
@@joellaz9836 gonna be taking a look at that for sure, I don't know why I find the concept of the two lores merging together so interesting, I guess is the aspect of transcendence of the old greek myths.

@@ChelseyTheDawn No problem. Cool thing is, that after the fall of Constantinopel the muslims took a loft of the ancient writings and studied them. From there those writings got to Italy, and it started a new age remembering and refering to the ancient scripts. Therefore this time period is called the "Renaissance".
This video is inaccurate. Everyone knows that Dante was a veteran of the crusades, had a cross stitched to his chest, had the grim reaper's scythe as his weapon, and jumped into hell to save his girlfriend Beatrice.

Hey! However one of the biggest virtues of the Commedia is that poetry can overcome the strictly rational approach to have a bigger value in the whole structure of the journey. (sorry for my very poor English!)
Wonderful video, here in Italy we do study "La Divina Commedia" in high shcool reading all the book. We do study inferno in the third year, purgatorio in the forth and paradiso in the fifth. All in the original 15th century italian

I love how he described it, just like we study it in school. I’m Italian so sorry for any mistake, I would like to add that the punishments were given following the law of “contrappasso” basically they were either by analogy or the opposite. For example, in the lust circle, people were being pushed by this strong wind and they couldn’t help but follow the direction the wind was blowing into, this is because during their lives, they couldn’t resist the lust and they followed their passion. Now the wind is pushing them just like their lust did. Hope you understood✨
Thanks for the explanation, I hope trump gets a contrappasso punishment in hell . I'm not American , watching what he's done to the American people this past 6 months has brought out my vengeful side.

The Divine Comedy is one of the pieces of classical literature that has always fascinated and interested me the most. It is very cool to see how the people from that time period imagined hell to look like, even if Dante probably put some of his own flavor in there.
You remind me of the kind of bookstore owner who'd gatekeep the hell out of his customers, acting like he's better than everyone else just because he'd rather read Don Quixote than Alex Cross.
Thank you so much for doing "The Divine Comedy" ! I've always wanted to read the entire thing but was never able to. I have a problem with my eyes now and can't read for very much longer than ten minutes. I've been trying to listen to it on an audio book but all the ones I can find are either dramatized or have different people reading it. It's frustrating having so many different people reading a canto or two which makes it hard to concentrate on what each is reading because of the different tones or influx that every person uniquely has. You are able to summerize this tale without leaving important pieces, or even just interesting parts out of it. That certainly isn't easy for a story like this! I love this channel! Not just for the content but also for your voice. It is very easy to listen to and your wit and sarcasm always seems to pop up at just the right time! Thank you for making such a great channel! You've got me as subscriber for life! ( please , please make a part two and three...)
I like to imagine characters from media that completely don't fit into the roles but share names while I listen. Fate/Apocrypha's Chiron isn't really into his mew job as security guard of hell, arrowing sitting ducks in boiling river, but agressive takeover by YawehCo. didn't leave him with much choice. The new administration is very racist and only lets centaurs work there. He is a hardworker but he has tired eyes cuz his heart isn't in it at all.

Virgil was actually a Roman writer and poet and lived during the reign of Emperor Augustus. One of his more famous works is the Aeneid, which I suggest to anyone interested to read
Dante Alighieri is to me a kindred spirit. I read his works when I was in college at Virginia Tech. I shared this read with my sister who also read this piece and it changed our lives.

That's sad. But reflect on the idea that a all-knowing, creator god creates you, engineers you to believe X and take action Y, then punishing you for it with eternal torment. He chose to create universe A, instead of universe B where you're destined for heaven or universe C where you seize to exist. Now that's truly sad. And now try and wrap your mind around the fact that alot of people call this entity good and loving.
play Dante's inferno. Everyone, please do it. its a wonderful and impressive adaptation of this brilliant piece of literary art in video game form that i find very satisfying. 👍🏽
Played it myself a couple of times and enjoyed it, but it's in now way an "impressive adaptation" of Dante's Inferno. For starters, the whole context is a series of fakes, movie clichés and anachronisms. Dante was never a crusader, he and Beatrice weren't lovers, and there's no indication that his father was a evil fatso who sexually assaulted her. Second, the whole thing about saving Beatrice from Lucifer's plan to make her his hellish spouse is nonsense, it's not what the poem is about at all. Third, while the game is visually very impressive up until the circle of Violence, the next one, Fraud, which takes up 13 of 34 canti in the poem (many among the most memorable), is just a series of grindy combat challenges in copy-pasted arenas, with no characterization whatsoever. Treachery is also very brief, as the game clearly spent most of its production design budget on the circles of Incontinence. So overall, it gives a skewed perception of how the cantica is structured. It's a fun hack-and-slash title, but please don't play it thinking it's in any way an adaptation of the poem.
I remember subscribing when this channel had less than 10k, it's great to see how your channel's grown, along with the artwork and intro's. Keep up the great work mate, can't wait to see this video, it's an interesting concept and is well known but I've never delved into the concept myself. Great work :)
I'd love part 2 and a part 3. The Divine Comedy always fascinated since I saw a documentary on Inferno is high school and then proceeded to read all 100 cantos Dante wrote. It was a fascinating read then at 16, and hearing the story of Inferno (at least) 10+ years later, it still just grips my attention.
Wow, a very interesting and sobering video. I've heard of this story all of my life and never would read it. Thank you for summarizing it for me as that was just the right amount. I do hope you've continued the story as I would like to hear it.
Super excited to see the other 2 parts of this series! Especially of how in depth each part would most likely be and the fact that there aren't many vids on Purgatorio and Pardisio
I've been meaning to get into Dante's Inferno. After reading the Davinci Code (or one of the other books in the series) I've had an interest in the layers of Hell
Do it man, but be ready to read the same page at least 2 times to understand anything, it’s a slow read but it gives so much, no other book will make your brain work so beautifully. My advice to make it more enjoyable, do it outside, on a sunny day, while listening to some good music, it’ll give you a really special experience.
Unfortunately you'll never see that one. However if you're patientand wait a little longer, you'll be able to watch "Dante's Purgatory - A Summary of the Divine Comedy Pt. 2"

The first fan fiction from Dante. Of course he feels a "connection" to Virgil what with Virgil being Dantes literal man crush and all time hero. His one issue is his hatred for Greek mythical hero's and his total loyalty to all Roman heroes.

So basically anything after around 200CE...

I find two things interesting about this tale:
1. Despite being rooted in judeochristian lore the story sure takes a lot of influence from Greek mythology, basically making both intersect in a shared universe.
2. Greek heroes that were praised for being cunning and clever in Greek myths, are ostracized in this tale for being considered mischievous from a Christian perspective at the time
Gengarin
John Milton’s paradise lost also combines Judeochristian lore with Greek mythology.

play Dante's inferno. Everyone, please do it. its a wonderful and impressive adaptation of this brilliant piece of literary art in video game form that i find very satisfying. 👍🏽
It’s like God of War: Christianity edition
Man when I reached greed, it became impossible..
Oh it's sooo good!!
The Commodore 64 version of Dante's Inferno is an impressive adaptation

My advice to make it more enjoyable, do it outside, on a sunny day, while listening to some good music, it’ll give you a really special experience.
Dante's Inferno - A Summary of the Divine Comedy Pt. 2 please and thank you.
Unfortunately you'll never see that one.
However if you're patientand wait a little longer, you'll be able to watch "Dante's Purgatory - A Summary of the Divine Comedy Pt. 2"
everyone always quote the first half but no one want to show up for the sequels
The Inferno isn't the first half but the first third.
All 3 are great

Neverender sure is. It’s the start of modern fiction.
You should definitely do the next part for dante's purgatorio. This video was very informative and it summarized exactly what I needed to know
