I really appreciate this comment. I always felt that the isolation mounts are clunkier. I actually installed one of these regular direct to shell brackets on a kit that came with an iso mount. Really like the simplicity too.
Not the first one, I was about to write the same comment regarding the trend to over engineering tom isolation mounts and the overestimation of the sound benefits derived from virgin bass drums. Well built and tuned drums have always sound great. Back in the day and until the 90s no one complains too much about losing tone and resonance from direct-to-shell tom mounts. Of course, improvements on isolation systems have been made with positive results which depend on the drum manufacture. It does not mean whatsoever that drums needed those “solutions” to sound good. Some people like the simplicity, convenience and ease to set the drums and positioning the toms, while reducing weight on the drums, the excessive bouncing of some iso systems, and some detrimental effects on tuning. The beauty is in the “ear” of the beholder.
I do not like that type of mount but it does not affect resonance that much, I have had both and was frankly disappointed that my bulky RIMS mounting system was not much different. I would never have that style mount on a new set of Ludwigs. @@juancarlosbrenes4741
Carter, I'm convinced no one tunes drums quite as well as you. Those drums literally sound perfect. Adore the Tony inspiration on this exquisite kit. Nobody does it like Ludwig!
I got to meet Carter McLean at the Ludwig H.I.T.S. Fest on the final Saturday night. Not only is he a great drummer and a wonderful ambassador for Ludwig drums, and drumming in general, but I found him to be a really, really nice guy who very graciously tolerated the somewhat ignorant questions and comments of an old guy who was out of drumming for almost 40 years. I'M OFFICIALLY A FAN! And btw... I've heard nothing but praise and positive commentary regarding the Ludwig H.I.T.S. Fest and really wish that I'd been able to get one of the Factory Tours as I've heard some fantastic comments about those. I live about 40 minutes from the factory and have taken an "official," as well as a couple of unofficial tours, but the H.I.T.S. Fest tours included demos and clinics by Ludwig artists like Carter, as well as some revelations about new finishes and products. In any event... GREAT JOB CARTER McLEAN! Maybe you can prevail upon Uli and the Ludwig leadership to produce this maple/poplar/mahogany shell (the "Legacy Super Classic?") for retail sale.
Obviously this video is all about the new kit, but the recording deserves some praise too. That classic Ludwig low end oomf just doesn’t get captured well enough in most recordings but Carter’s a master in that regard. A pair of AT5045s (with a healthy low end boost?) and kick drum mics gets the job done if you have a finely tuned kit, a good sounding room and of course a great drummer who knows what he’s doing. Awesome representation!
This was AWESOME to see and hear after a 12 hr work day Carter!! I have wanted a Tony Williams drum kit for a long time. This was such a surprise to see you with this great sounding and beautiful kit!! Thank you for making my day!!
That is sweet!! I've seen Marcus Gilmore play that 2nd sent of hi-hats w/his left heel, but I've never seen anyone play a bass drum w/the left heel. Fantastic.
he is such a 'feel good' drummer, i love it he's not like many others who show off speed, play with songs etc., just his own grooooovy feel. ik keep dreaming
The playing and tuning in this video is the shit yo! Enjoyed the joy being exhibited here brother. And beautiful drum set. Drums and cymbals are exquisitely matched.
The sound you get without close mic’ing the toms combined with your tuning capabilities is absolutely incredible. You’re also a darn good Ludwig salesman, Ludwig kits weren’t really on my radar until I discovered your channel
Damn McLean!......taking things to another place and level !!. Some of the most beautiful kit playing I've heard in a very long time!. Very inspiring!. Those toms are like a marimba. Such clarity of tone, and with no close mics!, pretty remarkable!. I think Bozzio would appreciate this a lot. This also makes me think of what Erskine might have done, if he'd gotten into big kits melodically tuned. and WOW did Lugwig create some fantastic sounding tubs!. Wonder if other makers will copy that shell construction???.....such a warm clear tone..............and doesn't hurt that you're a master tuner 😏👍
Maple/Poplar/Mahogany is definitely a great choice, especially with a paint finish!! If I remember from what Daniel Glass said, the maple on the outside was for kits that used a wrap because the glue stuck to maple better than mahogany.
Interesting as I have a “vintage” Ludwig kit - probably manufactured around 1973 - that has 3 ply shells with maple on the interior and mahogany on the outside. Black cortex finish with no problems and sounds fantastic.
My God... The tone and musicality coming out of my crappy laptop speakers took my breath away. I will be playing this a good many times on decent headphones and will just keep drinking it in. Also, you got that sound... without a mic in sight!!!!?!?!??! amazing. 5 stars.
Carter, gosh! Your musicality and the tuning of the kit its amazing! Love that low fat bass drums and the pitches in the toms. The head election is also on point! Enjoy the kit a lot!
I just get mesmerized listening to you play because it's so musical and relaxed. On top of that, the kit and the tuning sounds phenomenal and the mic mix is perfect. It's like I'm sitting in the room. Congrats on that amazing kit!
Sound great!! I was not at all disappointed when you turned the snares on. Whole kit blends nicely with your playing! I play Ludwig as well (4 pc : ) 😀
Impressive solo!Just ran across your channel and being a drummer also, clicked on it to check out your playing style, and awesome choice of drum gear.LOve the Tony Williams/jack dejohnette approach and yellow kit,the intro with the rolling washes and mallet work-dynamics!-tasty and thoughtful solo.any drummer who hits the thumbs down button is a jerk.will be watching for more in the future.THank you!
Woah! What a set of drums. And what a beautiful improvisation. Beautifully played (and recorded/filmed!). All of a sudden my love for bigger kits is rekindled. And I suddenly find banana yellow drum sets much more attractive than hitherto… amazing, Carter. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Beautiful Ludwig drum kit. The shells sound incredible.that snare drum is insane. Looking forward to seeing future videos of this kit and where your imagination goes with it
Yes, very nice. Reminds me a little of Bill Bruford's symmetric setup. He did a version of Max Roach's The Drum Also Waltzes on an album he did with Patrick Moraz called Flags. That has one of the most beautifully tuned and recorded kits I've ever heard. This is as close as I've heard, if not equal to it. And that's a compliment, Bill Bruford is my favourite drummer.
If you made an album of nothing but those drums and your gorgeous compositions I'd buy it yesterday. Absolutely beautiful tone. I can see and hear how'd they inspire you to play/create. Incredible!
I love playing drums like that freely, when it’s basically a story, ya know? And your setup screams freedom anyhow Really enjoy how you planned how the Tom’s spread out left and right, especially enjoy your desire for have a solid hi-hat close by rather than the second bass drum
Wow I love this kit! Sounds great Carter, beautiful playing as always mate! Man your tuning game is about as good as it can possibly get jesus sounds good.
Beautiful drums, and the tuning is fantastic. Your playing always gives me ideas, I'm just not playing currently. If I got another ludwig kit I would definitely want this color. I need to get your lessons soon.
Carter always has the best sounding kits...I think of those videos by that drum shop where they test the kits with overheads, room mics, full mix - and none of them sound anywhere near as good as Carters videos.
Maple poplar mahogany 3 ply is the kind of shells Ludwig used after 1964 until about 1968 if I'm not mistaken. I think my 1967 Hollywood is made of that ply combo.
What a monster set-up! Love the way you've mixed it up on the tom positioning. Reminds me of how Bill Buford reassembled his kit when he started playing more jazz stuff. Excited to hear more.
there's an art to tuning a kit, this is the state of the art.
Beautiful kit and beautiful playing!!!
Hey Max! Great to see you supporting another great drummer. When I found your channel, you reminded me right away of Carter McLean
Possibly the best tuning I’ve ever heard on a drum kit, end of
See drummers!!
Look - no over engineered isolated tom mounts. The drums sing and of course Mr. Carter sounds musically excellent.
I really appreciate this comment. I always felt that the isolation mounts are clunkier. I actually installed one of these regular direct to shell brackets on a kit that came with an iso mount. Really like the simplicity too.
the first person to ever complain about iso mounts lol.

I came here to say the same exact thing. I always know when I watch a Carter video it's going to be top tier.
I agree 110%!
Superb! That's one of the best tuned sets I've heard.
Yeah dude, the tuning is always impeccable.
We need the tuning video!!! And configuration of the lower Tom’s!!!
That 26x14 kick off to the side has its own orbit in Carter's drum universe because the sound and air coming from it needs it...
Brother, that drum set is so beautiful, Greetings from Mexico
Absolutely awesome! Gorgeous finish, tuning, playing, and love the 3 wood shell blend. 🙌🏼
Having a FT off to the left of the snare is so much fun. I've had my kits set up that way the last 5 years or so. Looks AMAZING. Such a nice kit!!!
Just stuck my 16 there 2 weeks ago. Wished id done it sooner. My backs happier too 🤙

What a beautiful blend of melody and groove, gorgeous playing.

Not just a bigger palette but the sonic depths are sounding thunderous. Damn.
Sheer perfection. I salute you, sir.
Very Steve Smith-like solo. Beautifully played. Also love the drums. I saw Todd Sucherman playing one of similar color.
Beautiful kit, beautiful playing.
Sounds incredible and looks fab! Nice one Carter & Ludwig ❤
Tony Williams vibes with the colour and playing too!
Wow nice drum sound and excellent playing with finesse and touch! 😊
Beautiful looking and amazing sounding kit.
Dude created a new genre: Drum ASMR
Wow I have an old 60's slingerland maple popular mahoghany and your ludwigs sound great

Fantastic drumming, tuning and recording. And look - no free floating tom mounts!

Absolutely stellar. Look is killer and they sound open and gorgeous. Congrats!
I had the old school maple/poplar from 79. Great shells!
Awesome Drumset played by a world class drummer. Truly we are spoiled ! 🙏
what a delight.
thanks for this one.
That's a more musical drum solo than any I can think of. And he's just testing the kit!
Carter doesn't play drums, he plays MUSIC.
Felt like steve reich a couple of times in the intro, really beautiful
I'm seeing a trend, lots of UA-cam drummers are obtaining custom Ludwig drum sets all of a sudden
I still can't believe how smoothly you go between singles and doubles Carter. One of your (many) standout features!
I didn't know you were allowed to be an amazing musician and be able to tune drums that well. Fantastic all around!
They sound incredible! Vintage tom mounts as well, very cool.
Gosh, when you were tapping them with your fingers they sounded amazing as well! Just beautiful drums and extraordinary tuning. 🙌
Very musical drumming my friend.
LOVELY tuning... It's the bass drum sounds that always get me the most.
Quite nice presentation.
wonderful playing sir. Smooth touch and tasteful OH and yea the drums sound great! Cheers
Beautifully toneful drums! I can't wait to hear them in a rock config! Congrats, Carter!

Beautiful sound!
Im officially a fan 😍 what fluidity 😍
Gorgeous playing man, you really mastered the "effortless" thing. So wonderful to listen to.
that was a whole movie, let alone a reason for me to add a Ludwig to my cart. 10/10
Welcome to the jungle Jazz Intro at 6:10🔥
Beautiful playing and awesome sound! 😎🥁👌🏻
So glad someone caught that! GNR 🎉
Wow Carter, just wow.
Great sounding kit. Lovely playing.

Wow, thank you!
I'm with this guy. Give me 90 minutes of this and Id buy it.
I love everything about this. Bravo! ❤️

What a tone and a beautiful finish. Tuned to perfection 🍻🥁
Also as always, the most tasteful playing 🔥
The first backwards-left-side-heel- bass drum video blew my mind enough man
Big ass crazy yellow drum kit. I love it!!
Bello/Magnifico.👑👑👑👑👑👑🌡️
Beautiful stuff Carter .. Congratulations on the new kit, sounds fantastic as always 🥂
Gorgeous. Absolutely love the kit and playing. I love setting up a side kit like that too to play with the heal. Killer man!
Beautiful.
Beautiful tuning!
Wow I love this kit! Sounds great Carter, beautiful playing as always mate! Man your tuning game is about as good as it can possibly get jesus sounds good.
Just waw! The good taste Mister. For all!
I've always been a sucker for yellow kits and that one looks and sounds amazing. Terrific playing, as always.
Beautiful Drums . Great articulation and dynamics in that piece......DAMN YOU'RE GOOD! Take care.
Never heard a bad sounding kit from this young man. So musical in every aspect.
I bet he could tune my Ludwig centennial’s to sound amazing.
Man, that is a beautiful kit, Carter. And, of course, they sound incredible!
Bright colour, warm sound. Sounds great!
Amazing! And that color! Wow. Happy for you man! 👏🥁💛
Beautiful drums, and the tuning is fantastic. Your playing always gives me ideas, I'm just not playing currently. If I got another ludwig kit I would definitely want this color. I need to get your lessons soon.
Super fab!!!! Definitely my favorite thing Ludwig has done in a very long time.
Drums are legit beautiful
Beautiful. Thank you
Great kit. Great cymbals. Great playing as always!
Carter always has the best sounding kits...I think of those videos by that drum shop where they test the kits with overheads, room mics, full mix - and none of them sound anywhere near as good as Carters videos.
MY GOSH WHAT A SOUND (and love your style)
Belíssima bateria. Excelente a sua performance. Parabéns.
Oh, they sound fantastic. Fantastic tuning (and playing of course).
I dig the 15" FT too. Is it that one 14" deep?
Wow what an amazing sounding kit and playing. It’s insanely amazing wow 🔥🥁
The drums and your playing are both incredible!
Simply amazing Carter. Thank you.
Maple poplar mahogany 3 ply is the kind of shells Ludwig used after 1964 until about 1968 if I'm not mistaken. I think my 1967 Hollywood is made of that ply combo.
My 1967 Downbeat (psych red) is mahogany/poplar/mahogany w/maple reinforcement rings
What a monster set-up! Love the way you've mixed it up on the tom positioning. Reminds me of how Bill Buford reassembled his kit when he started playing more jazz stuff. Excited to hear more.
who also toured with a yellow kit in the 90's
