Saw them in concert this week and the vocals were much better! They just needed time to gel as a new group. Jeff's vocals are stellar. His range is amazing, and the harmonies between the whole band are tight once again. This is just what they needed to revitalize and keep going!
I saw Chicago with Earth Wind and Fire at this exact venue in September 2015 -14th row from the front. Such an amazing show! I miss Jason Scheff, but Jeff Coffey sounds fantastic!
🎶 This is added to my playlist a while ago. The way you use vocals and harmonize is truly the best! ( Also relate to this as I picked up the words listening.)
Jason Scheff is an exceptional bass player and I am a fan of his bass playing and the groove he brought to Chicago, but Jeff Coffey seems to be more comfortable when hitting the high notes, his voice is richer and rounder.
Sorry, but Jeff has an intonation problem and frankly his tone is a bit thin for those rich notes and performance of the CTA songs . I can understand the frustration that Bob Lamm must be going through. I like Jeff's musicianship, but not for Chicago.
I think Chicago sets key high for a tenor to sing. So over decade of stretching high notes eventually a singer's voice no longer able to keep up. Jeff's vocal chords was fresh at that time but after 10 years of keep singing Chicago's songs, his vocal chords will give up eventually. I am a singer so I am very keen of vocal chords and key of the songs.
Jeff and Lou do fine on this song. Too bad Jeff was with the band for only a year. I was looking forward to hearing some new Chicago songs, but I don't think that will happen now.
Everyone speaks about Peter. Now a days, he might got the style but not the high range voice. No one will replace his style, cause its unice. But this new guy may not have the greates style of all, but it will give you more emotions that you can imagine. Ive seen Chicago for about 7 times un concert. And Believe me, this guy was incredible. I hope he Could one of this days return to the band. The new lead singer has nothing to give.

This is the first time I've heard Jeff sing. He is great! I'm sorry to hear he has left the band. I listened to the new guy from Canada. He is decent but not nearly as good as Coffey or Scheff.
then Tris, Keith, Lou resigns the band 😢 when those guys are no longer with Robert, Lee, Jimmy, & Walt…….the legacy goes on and on…… Walfredo Reyes, Jr. Neil Donell Brett Simons Tony Obrohta Loren Gold
1975/1976 Chicago Stadium, 1977 Aline Valley, 1978/79/80 Poplar Creek. 1981 I heard "Love Me Tomorrow" in the operating room before going under for emergency appondectomy when I was in basic training at Fort Jackson. Forgot about Chicagofest in 79/80. Saw em an additional 6 times at the Holiday Star theatre and another 6 times again at Poplar Creek til Hoffman Estates tore it down for a shopping mall. 3 times at that lousy outdoor theatre in Tinley park with the bad sightlines and poor soundsystem. They were the best part of my only long term relationship, and the worst part("Love Will Come Back")when it was over. I lost all of their albums in a flood in 1995 and all of my ticket stubs, T-Shirts and other keepsakes of theirs in a house fire in 1990. You could never really fill the holes that Terry and Pete left when they did indeed leave, But Bill was really great and Jason was pretty darn good. These guys have been the sound track of my life for all the good and bad of it. I wish I could thank them all in person for being there for me, maybe i just did...............
Maybe it was 2010 at Red Rocks Denver but not 2009 I think Champlain was gone but I was alluding to the end of his time in particular that DVD they released from California somewhere with Earth Wind and Fire you can see Robert Langdon rolling his eyes
I've been wondering if they will do a 50th anniversary tour, similar to what the Stones did. They must be closing in on the big 5-0 soon !! What does everyone else think?
They tossed out their 80's songs from their live sets ??? thats awesome i would love it if Robert Lamm would sing any of those somewhat rare gems from the first seven albums. I would love to hear Listen, Poem For The People, Wake Up Sunshine, Mother, All Is Well,
Gotta give Jeff credit as Chicago songs are mostly high and imagine singing tenor every night lol. I'm a Singer and I do tenor and I sing 8 or 9 songs in my set list what are tenor and trust me my vocals are finished after my show 😂😃😂
Yeah, it's not the "same without Jason and Bill singing it." How true - now they're on key. No more sour notes by Jason and no more caterwauling by Bill.
Hahah. Great response. Couldn't agree more. Bill Champlain was fucking horrible and I'm surprised that the core of Chicago actually wanted him in the band. He was horrible.
Also Keith Howland gone in 2021, and then Lou Pardini gone in 2022 too…..big changes in the band lineup when Walfredo Reyes, Jr, Neil Donell, Brett Simons, Tony Obrohta, & Loren Gold are now in Chicago when those guys left since they are now replacements for Imboden, Howland, Pardini, & Coffey now…….😢
When someone leaves, someone else has to fill their shoes. Most bands from the sixties/seventies have members that have replaced original players. Yeah, they may become copy bands and it's not the same, but for hard-core fans, the music is kept alive. (If you consider that a good thing) I've been listening to these guys since high school and seeing someone unfamiliar sucks, but I don't think Coffey is bad.
It's a shame they couldn't keep this guy, Coffey, on board. He's much better than Jason ever was. Supposedly, he just didn't want to work/tour as hard as the rest of the band.
@@tonyde52 I thought that's what I said regarding Jeff and touring. He didn't make that a secret. Your added comment that there's no reason for them to tour anymore is ridiculous, unless you are their manager or in charge of the band and the members' lives. I think that may be their decision to make and they likely couldn't care less what your humble opinion is.
Jeff Coffey is a fine singer and bassist no doubt. Shame he didn't stick with the band, but I can see why. Peter Cetera, Jason Scheff, and Tris Imboden all have complained that Chicago has way too strict and heavy a touring schedule all year every year to where basically there's no room to breathe, expand musically, or even live. Walt Parazaider (Original Saxophone player and band member) even stopped touring with the band more than a decade ago cuz of that as well. All of them seem much happier out of the band after they each left based on interviews I've seen after their respective departures. And ya know, Lou Pardini is a fine replacement for Bill Champlin, but someone needs to tell him to stop trying to G-D hard to sound like him when he sings. My god he overdoes it to the point where it's like nails on a chalkboard. Sheesh.
I disagree. I liked Jason Scheff at the beginning, but over time, he started to get sucked into the modern style of singing, changing the song, making each note in to five different pitches. Jason started to over sing, rather than singing the actual song. Jeff has a bit of a different voice, but he does his job perfectly. It is Hard Habit to Break, rather than Harrrraaahhad hrraaabiat to brerererake. Jeff keeps the right pitches and time.
Cats & dogs fighting sound better because they have emotion. These guys have no notion in need of a magic potion. They all suck in need of electrocution.
Windows Media Player U must not have liked Bill then? He improvised every performance. For me that’s a good thing. If I want to hear the album, I will listen to the album. For the most part, I enjoy when bands change it up a bit, makes live performances exciting! Again, just my opinion, cheers,
Champlin started doing the same thing. For his brief time in Chicago, I think Coffey was awesome. Better then Scheff or Cetera circa 2016 and that is saying a lot.
Oh Boy where do I start with people. First off if all you want to do is rip Jeff and Lou why are you even listening to this. The person uploaded this because they went to the concert and probably thought people would enjoy this. If you don't like them don't fucking listen move on. If you feel it's a cover band great move on. No shit Peter Cetera isn't in the band anymore Captain Obvious. I love Peter Cetera he is the best at singing all the Peter Cetera songs he sang in Chicago. Bill Champlin is great at singing Bill Champlin songs he sang in Chicago we know this. Lou and Jeff are hard working musicians with excellent voices and are true professionals. What musician who worked hard his whole life pounding out gigs wouldn't take a job singing in Chicago. It's a dream come true a true accomplishment. I'm sure they both love Peter and Bill they probably wouldn't have auditioned to sing in Chicago if they didn't like Peter and Bill's music. It's a Chicago fans decision if they feel it's a cover band now. If they do they probably won't shell out a couple hundred dollars for some tickets. However if they are okay with certain people not being in the band and just want to hear the music then so be it enjoy the music and have fun. Jeff and Lou came out there every night trying to sing their ass off for the Chicago fans. In fact I'm sure they tried extra hard knowing certain douche bags would come on these UA-cam videos and make negative and rude comments. I'd like to see Joe comments out there go the hell up there and out sing Jeff or Lou go ahead you moron. I apologize to the poster of this video for profanity but I felt it was needed to make my point. Thanks.
This guy is okay. Maybe better than Scheff. He hits the notes effortlessly, has the range but definitely lacks Peter Cetera's distinctive voice and style. Chicago is nothing more than a tribute band these days anyway. Terry Kath was the shit. So underrated. :(
And there's no Chicago & Cetera's live video sing Hard Habit to Break & You're the Inspiration in UA-cam. I never find those except two live audio-only from the concert after they released the Chicago 17.
Ugh, his voice is too high and I don't know who did Champlin's part but... I just prefer the original version! Still love the band but maybe it's time to go their separate ways.
it's just not the same with out peter now it's just not the same with out Jason well those guys went on and I think Jeff Coffee is doing just fine I don't hear on the radio that was Peter Cetera or wasn't Jason Sheff great nope I hear that was Chicago good job Jeff Coffee :-)
Maria Ordoñez Peter Cetera ya no canta bien, de hecho ya ni siquiera alcanza las notas... No sé cuidó la voz y se oye en su manera de cantar. Fue muy bueno si, pero ya no lo es....
Yeah, 2023 was a year that this lineup was now officially gone forever……Tris Imboden gone, Jeff Coffey gone, Keith Howland gone, and now Lou Pardini is gone in the beginning of 2022….😢 But it’s now Walfredo Reyes, Jr, Neil Donell, Brett Simons / Eric Baines, Ramon Yslas, Tony Obrohta, & Loren Gold in Chicago……
Don't really care for the Jeff Coffey sound. Sounds like someone doing karaoke. Don't get me wrong, he's not a bad singer, he just can't replace the classic "Chicago" sound.
This is a great video and a great discussion. Thanks for both. I'll weigh in. One of Chicago's biggest self-imposed limitations, based on an early interview with Lamm, is their compulsion to have lead singers who also play bass; not the best singer for a group - or the best replacement for Cetera vocals. So it really makes a sacrifice for the convenience of having a 2-for-1 band member. In this way, Scheff was at his strongest when singing his own original material. Another juxtaposition is Arnel Pineda who has a video on here singing "You're the Inspiration". It's fantastic. Hits all the high notes but with a muscular sound that has lots of texture. Now, Coffey is a welcome relief because he can effortlessly hit the high notes and keeps the singing simple. Sometimes less is more. On the other hand, I think he can develop greater feeling or connection to the text. After all, it's still a song about a transcendent love. Now, you may say that is sappy, but that's what it's about and that's what they need to sell. Barring that, it feels more workmanlike and less emotive. My own hope is that this develops and deepens as Coffey's time with the band continues. Champlain is an amazing talent so it is a revelation that Pardini is able to make these songs his own with a terrific interpretation that supports his wonderful voice and the original melody. I will say that I like how Coffey can hold a single note cleanly. A nice juxtaposition to constant vibrato.
@@clydekamishita4573 Which Chicago? If the original lineup had all the tech and studio musicians we have today back in the 70's, I'd have to disagree. Today, however, I am probably a bigger fan of L & F than of the current Chicago lineup. L & F are also considerably younger than the original guys.
I like this Jeff guy. He can hit the notes even though he sounds nothing like Jason or Peter. Jason was such an inconsistent and lazy singer and Peter ad-libbed way too much. And I agree with the consensus that Champlins singing never was pleasing to the ears live. This Lou pardini guy, I want to say he sound like Champlin but for some reason it sounds to me like he tries too hard to copy champlins singing tone and style that he’s obvious to me. Still, this band I will always love for their recordings. Never can change that.
Lon Tanner I am seeing that I’m in the minority, but I liked Bill live, always appreciated his ability to improvise IMO tastefully and bring something new almost every time out.
This band has become a tribute band of itself . I saw them in 2011 and was shocked at Bill Champlains incessant scatting and Jason Scheff's inability to reach notes any longer . Both of them were excellent replacements in their time but let's face it the passing of Terry Kath and departure of Peter Cetera rendered this band as a shell of it's prior self. I guess it is just fun and nostalgia going forward and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but the original will always be without peer
Too much touring and tearing of their vocal cords...but if people continue to pay to listen to them, then why not...Lou doesn't sound as good as when he was solo and I'm afraid in a few years Jeff will be the same as well.
I compared this video to a recent rendition from Peter Cetera and whomever his backup sing is, and was disappointed. Cetera didn't sing it as well as Coffee and the other singer was terrible. Pardini is pretty decent too.
I love Bill Champlin. But, I never liked his live performances. Lou Pardini has a similar voice but, seems to be following in his (Bills) footsteps and "oversinging". Just sing the song the way it was originally recorded.
Both men have really strong voices. Bravo, Chicago!

Maria Ordoñez Peter Cetera ya no canta bien, de hecho ya ni siquiera alcanza las notas... No sé cuidó la voz y se oye en su manera de cantar. Fue muy bueno si, pero ya no lo es....
Owen Wilson is as good as Cetera
People whining over Cetera? Still? Jasons gone too ok whine some more. Bills gone boo hoo!!! Still sound awesome! !
Terry was a long time ago:(
Who needs Cetera if we have OWEN WILSON?
Owen Wilson is a great fit, too bad he is back to doing movies...
Miss this line up. Not the same without Keith and Lou
Yeah, 2023 was a year that this lineup was now officially gone forever……Tris Imboden gone, Jeff Coffey gone, Keith Howland gone, and now Lou Pardini is gone in the beginning of 2022….😢
But it’s now Walfredo Reyes, Jr, Neil Donell, Brett Simons / Eric Baines, Ramon Yslas, Tony Obrohta, & Loren Gold in Chicago……
A far cry from where he should be with that vocal , I would never go out sounding like that. Peter would agree.
nem o tecladista nem o vocal de não se compara com bill Chaplin e Jason schef .
los mejores vocalistas que tuvo Chicago
Coolmichaelmiller
Cetera make that song this fella dont have Peter's range but pretty good
Don't really care for the Jeff Coffey sound. Sounds like someone doing karaoke. Don't get me wrong, he's not a bad singer, he just can't replace the classic "Chicago" sound.
I cant really feel the song without Bill and Jason singing it
none of the original singers on this song
too fuzzy
The replacements are better than the originals. Lou Pardini is so smooth and on target. And Jeff is amazing.
Yeah, that's funny...
He's mostly hitting the tenor vocal pitches, but it just sounds thin, IMO.
"The replacements are better than the originals". No chance. You are entitled to your opinion, but I will take the originals any day.
2nd best is the best you can ever hope to be in singing this song if you're not Peter Cetera.
I kind of like Chicago's new lead singer
Great Chicago cover band featuring a few original members.
The Russian Band Leonid & Friends sound better than Chicago!
Chicago The End!
Lon Tanner I am seeing that I’m in the minority, but I liked Bill live, always appreciated his ability to improvise IMO tastefully and bring something new almost every time out.
i thought it was owen wilson. ...only similar to....
good but no Cetera
Who needs Cetera if we have OWEN WILSON?
This band has become a tribute band of itself . I saw them in 2011 and was shocked at Bill Champlains incessant scatting and Jason Scheff's inability to reach notes any longer . Both of them were excellent replacements in their time but let's face it the passing of Terry Kath and departure of Peter Cetera rendered this band as a shell of it's prior self. I guess it is just fun and nostalgia going forward and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but the original will always be without peer
You sure it was 2011 Gary? Bill was gone in the summer of 2009.
Too much touring and tearing of their vocal cords...but if people continue to pay to listen to them, then why not...Lou doesn't sound as good as when he was solo and I'm afraid in a few years Jeff will be the same as well.
great range,better than Scheff....!
Cool...a Chicago Tribute band.
I can't take it no more. I'm going to wet my finger & stick it in the wall socket.
Just sing the song the way it was originally recorded.
que porqueria de interpretacion y de alineacion de chicago, parece un grupo de guercos actuales..........los buenos son Bill Champlin / jason Scheff y peter cetera
Doesn't sound like cetera but it's all okay😀
Why do all the replacements for cetera sound like such wimps?
