On any Sunday, you could walk into almost any Southern Baptist church in America and enjoy doughnuts and coffee before Sunday School, a potluck dinner after the service, or an ice cream social. Many of our church activities are centered on food. Food is a gift but obviously can be overdone. Thanks for the applicable topic.
On the other hand, eating together as a form of fellowship is a common practice throughout the Bible. How many times is Jesus recorded eating with His disciples? In 1 Corinthians, it seems that the way that the early church practiced the Lord's Supper was more similar to a Baptist potluck than how we typically practice it today.

I think being obsessed with health (counting calories, being too into dieting, etc) can become an idol too, kind of "reverse gluttony." Calorie counting and dieting are not bad, any more than simply eating is, but having a preoccupation or obsession is another way of having an unhealthy relationship with food.

Wow. Right on time. Had to be the Lord! I was just thinking about how I'm going to overcome overindulgence at the Christmas party I'm going to tonight 😣
Can I say it's ok to enjoy yourself? I don't want to discount gluttony, but God was just getting on me about being able to enjoy myself. I was raised not to; I was always on edge, and everytime something nice was supposed to happen, it was only ever a burden for me. God was showing me that He created wine for a reason. Of course, if you lean towards drunkenness, you shouldn't partake, but there other joys to have. There is time for planting AND time for harvest! It is an area I struggle in, because nice things are always connected to high stress and walking on eggshells. But God wants me, and all of us, to enjoy things. I'm not discounting self control, just saying you should also enjoy yourself. For the party, that is 😁 Don't keep going all week😉
Enjoying yourself for one night at a party is not gluttony. People feasted in the Bible. What is gluttony is habitual overfeeding (or overdoing ANYTHING) because of pleasure or compulsion. Gluttony is simply lust, but it is lust for consumption.
I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. I don’t watch porn. I don’t cheat on my husband. But I love to eat! And sometimes I remember that there’s one of my favorite snacks back there in that pantry and I just get up and go get it and I’m not even hungry! So, yes, this video was for me. And I thank you for it. God bless you.
My first visit to Atlanta First Baptist, Charles Stanley preached on gluttony and slothfulness. I’m sure he covered some other sins too, but it was the first time I’d heard those called out, and I needed to hear it. Brave minister preaching the Word. I joined the church.
If anyone would’ve preached on gluttony, I think Charles Stanley would be one of them… he is greatly missed, and sadly, his son is not even holding a candle to his legacy… We can pray for his return to the truth so that he can re-saddle the old and new testament back together as it should be.
Yes! You're doing the video that I requested. Thank you, brother Allen. 🙏 The fact that you can relate to this and laugh at yourself had me laughing at myself as well while also realizing what a huge problem/sin this is for me. ❤
PREACH!! This has been a 40+ year struggle for me and my sin is right out there for everyone to see (I'm obese), much to my shame. Thank you for speaking truth about this subject of gluttony; for calling it for what it is (sin) and for offering godly counsel and encouragement. You didn't say anything I didn't already know, but I needed to hear it again and get my attitude right. My toes are hurtin' from being stepped on (lol), but perhaps the "pain" will help me to maintain a correct focus. God bless you.
You are loved Deborah ❤️ Coming from a medical professional, a patient’s gratitude to Jesus and overflowing kindness shines through any physical imperfection. I want to encourage you in your ambition to gain a healthier body, and to continue in your humble spirit. It is a difficult road but Christ be with you every step!
USA needs to hear that. Poor people eat a lot. Unfortunately, it came to Russia too. 😢 Foods contains too much added sugar, so people get addicted to eating.
Thank you, brother Allen! I've overindulged tons of times, especially at parties. I for sure need to focus on eating smaller portions, but God's been working on me about this issue! I so often used to eat food because I was bored or depressed. The problem with that is I woke up more tired, not wanting to go to school, or work. I haven't really thought about accountability for gluttony, when I do struggle with it, it's for a time. Prayer is very much appreciated! Thanks again Allen!
Great subject. You’re right no one preaches and teaches on it. Great job!!! I enjoy your podcasts amongst only a few others. Y’all are doing a great job exposing the false teachers. May God Bless you and your family
I totally agree. This was a powerful lesson. Now I suffer the consequences of years of unhealthy eating. I have to now really monitor my food because of my past behavior. I can't eat certain foods. Very helpful and honest lesson learned the hard way.
This message is awesome! As you mentioned, it can pertain to anything not just food. Thank you for the Bible passages to back this up. We all need God‘s word to help us every day! 🙏
Many years ago I adopted the “eat when you’re hungry (true hunger) and stop when you’re full (not miserable) and I lost weight without changing anything else. Sadly I fell off that wagon. Emotional eating is SUCH a stronghold for many of us and we medicate without even thinking of what we are doing. I will strive to be more intentional about curbing this behavior. It’s a new day every day to make a new choice even when the day before just didn’t work out. ❤ all this, pastor. It was such a needed reminder.

Thank you brother Allen this is something I totally have not watch out in my spiritual growth. I believe this video was for me, also I will share to fellows brothers and sisters.
I appreciate you talking about this, I struggled with this also since my husband passed away. Another thing that ministers Don't preach on any more is vanity. Blessings to you 🙏
You’re right I haven’t heard that either… when we care more about the outward appearance then what is going on inside. Maybe it’s time we bring back some of these old virtues
I'm right there with you Allen. Being a Chef and someone who works out seven days a week, I tend to gravitate towards food. Lorrrrrd help me with this food addiction 😢
Oh SNAP!!! I can't believe I'm listening to this!!! This is the sinful stronghold of my life! I wasn't even looking for help with it today. Come on Holy Spirit!!!! Pastor Allen this is the most amazing teaching on gluttony I have heard in 54 years as a believer. Brilliant.
My grandmother always used to remind me to leave a part of my stomach empty so that it could be filled with light. As I grew older, I realized that this light was spiritual, and that by doing so, space is created to attract energy.
This is the message I've been praying for!! I've been struggling for a few years now. I would get in gear and fall off the wagon, over and over again...Thank you Brother Parr!!!
I listened to the beginning of this video then left it. I came back this week because I realised I’ve been getting gluttonous this holiday. In retrospect I may have been gluttonous before the holiday season. Thank you for this.
I have a suggestion: What about Overcoming Relationship Dramas from all Three situations... 1 Insecurities, 2 Communication Issues, 3 Need Of Attention,
Years ago I heard a pastor speaking on fasting and he'd say "I can see none of you are suffering from fasting". Personally I think we should call it slowing. Good message Sir.
4:53 i literally just did this hours ago. i started feeling a sense of stress after, ironically, Christian club. i felt ashamed and convicted immediately. i thank God for this video.
I'm gonna argue that using the clock to eat can be a good thing. When you set times for your meals, your body becomes adjusted to your eating schedule. Then you end up naturally becoming hungry at a healthy time.
It might help people eat less. Some people snack throughout the day, all day and even at night. Having set times brings routine and discipline and helps not to eat too often. Portion sizes are important to watch too.
😢 so me. Always overeating even when I'm not hungry and feeling bad after. I've been setting daily reminders yet still keep letting food control me. Thank you for sharing and let's continue to pray to God for guidance and wisdom to overcome this! Philippians 3:18-19 - For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
Truly, this is very convicting as someone who is struggling to loose weight because i let myself always indulge into whatever i'm craving to eat. Didn't realize that this sin of gluttony is a serious problem and a sin that God is not taking it lightly
Thank you Brother Allen for making this video. You spoke on a topic that rarely taught in the church, yet is truly needed. Self-control through the power of the Holy Spirit is needed for this as well as other sins. Your presentation is one that we can all relate to. It is a sin that we should address like any other sin in our lives. Continued to blessings to you and your family 🙏
Allen, it's so true that you don't have to be overweight to struggle with gluttony. I've always been thin, but my parents used to call me greedy because I always used to get seconds...and thirds. It's a heart thing. Sometimes it manifests physically but not always. Now I've been super stressed and have to force myself to eat. 😅Gluttony is more prevalent than homosexuality, porn, and all the sins we love to harp on but we're strangely silent on this one. Thank you. I also love the tip you gave about eating when you're actually hungry instead of eating at a certain time. A lot of people do OMAD and it works great for them.
Thank you, brother. This topic is never talked about yet so many people struggle with it. I’m so grateful for this video. I have been praying for my friend who struggles with this a lot but after watching this I realised I too need to improve my attitude to food which I often see as comfort.
As usual Allen's timing is impeccable lmao. Right as we come up to the christmas season with all the cake and food... man, I love me some christmas cake. I needed to hear this.
I knew from the title what the subject would be. Thank you for doing this and especially for being so honest about your own struggle...even though you are slender. I'm an emotional eater...please remember all of us in prayer.😢❤
Oh my goodness. I am so glad I clicked on the video. Just on UA-cam searching for something to watch. This video is what I need to hear. Great job of making this video and listening to God ❤❤❤❤❤
OOH MY GOODNESS!!!! THIS is a HUGE problem in the Church! And you’re right. It is not spoken of in the Church. And you’re right: You should eat WHEN you’re hungry. The government is also complicit in this activity. Thank Bro. Parr for this, thank you.
The main thing I admire about you is your transparency in the areas that you also struggle. This is my main issue right now, so thanks for the video. It was super helpful. God bless you.
Allen, THANK YOU for this episode. This is so much needed to hear! Keep on being God’s disciple - He is using you to help so many people stay on the right path, including me! May God bless you for the work you are doing and strengthen you to carry on x
Right on! Thank you so much for touching this huge issue that we all face, more than any other desires! Many of my Christian friends told me that there would be no fun if eating is out of their lives. I think you should add the word 'gluttony' in the subject, I bet you'll gain more views and can reach more people because most of us struggle with it but it's never discussed according to the Bible, amen!
I think this was timely because it helped me identify something. I didn’t realize I was struggling with. You gave some great insights and practical applications. Thank you so much.
Hi pastor Allen I really appreciate you. First there is no condemnation in Jesus.. second praying that you can enjoy the blessing of food. God bless you.
Thank you for discussing this! A lot of us struggle with it and would rather not talk about it. Food is also a very sensitive topic in the African-American/Southern (my region) community. Viewing it more from a spiritual perspective will help us all. 🙏🏾
Thank you for talking about it and great tips. I've always stuggled with my weight. Lost a lot, gained a lot. But now that I gave my heart to Jesus, I have to pray to HIM to help me control it. Thanks a lot. Be blessed.
Brother Allen.... Please pray for my struggles with this . I've recently experienced a divorce and have turned to food as a comfort and Lord knows I'm trying to manage my emotions and I do make excuses.... Please please pray for me in Jesus Christ name thank you in advance ❤
My husband and I had this conversation many times. It’s time for us to stand up and start preaching to our fellow brothers and sisters about this topic
Thank you so much Allan for this video! You are so lucky it doesn’t show on the outside. I used to have all of these for food but not anymore thank you Jesus! ❤
Many years ago I was addicted to chocolate and coffee but now with God's help ,I can have it in the house and partake only when i really want some. I am delivered, praise the Lord🙌
Thank you so much for making this video!! You are doing God’s work!! This is a topic I’ve never heard preached in church and I’ve been a Christian my whole life. I’m praying for your ministry! Keep it going!! 😊🙌🏻🔥
Wow I was just speaking about this with someone. Sadly every obese person I have ever known were in church. There's been a "joke" in the black church that if your choir had a couple of fat people you was good. I had a previous Pastor who was several hundreds pounds, fiercely preaching about every sin but gluttony. He unfortunately died, part was due to obesity. And I understand how much food is such as emotional issue, think of how the term "pandemic weight" came about, because people ate due to stress and being inactivity. I'm in the process of losing 30 pounds so I can relate to this in God had to remind me I am his temple and belong to him, so when we mistreated it's saying to God "I don't care about what you made".
I never gained weight until after I got pregnant. So I never learned to control my eating. Now I’m trying to learn to be moderate. It takes a total change in the way you think about food.
When I was pregnant with my twins, I was sitting in our church’s coffee lounge during the service due to some pregnancy discomforts. I couldn’t focus on the sermon on the tv because I was focused on the doughnuts in the corner of my eye. I wasn’t hungry, they just sounded good. I finally took one and as I was taking the biggest first bite our pastor said, “Now let’s talk about gluttony.” Convicted.
Its soooo true & sad at once that we don't hear about this in our churches... Thank you Allen🙏🏼 I think that almost everyone to some degree struggles with gluttony... Only with God's help we are able to overcome & fight
For myself, I've noticed that stopping to pray - even for snacks - helps me focus on The Creator of all foods rather than on the food itself. Thank you, Brother Allen.
I was talking to my husband about this yesterday and telling him I want God to help me to do better with food. And you put this video out to toady. Thank you God! God bless you brother Allen!
Reminds me of the story of Lazarus left at the rich man’s gate hoping for crumbs while the rich man ate lots of delicious foods. The rich man ended up in hell while Lazarus was comforted in Abraham’s bosom.
You are the second pastor I’ve heard deal with this topic thank you for the loving reminder that there is more I need to ask Christ to Lord over in my life
Great job brother. I had two reminisces as I watched this: I remember way back in the late 70s a discussion between a brother and sister in my congregation. The woman was 300+ pounds and at church dinners she ate very little (she may have been hiding her eating, but…..) and this guy was lecturing her about gluttony while at the same time he ate a ton of food. Most of us there recognized that he was a hypocrite who should not have been lecturing. 2) When I was growing up with 4 siblings, we ate pretty fast because the food was limited and the metabolism fast (you snooze, you lose at the dinner table). Unfortunately as we get older, the metabolism slows down but our habits do not. I had to quit being the “clean up” person.
Thanks for this brother Parr . After listening to this it motivated me to go for an extra workout today . I can totally be doing better with my eating habits as well.
I called it compulsive over eating. When I started calling it what it is, gluttony, I prayed for forgiveness and God has helped me to change my eating habits. Losing weight finally. Eating to be healthy.
Changing the term; simple but brilliant! Thank you

For Bible proof of this we read: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
There is no sin either of word, deed, or thought, which the law of God will not search out and condemn.
I'm guilty as charged! This struggle is difficult for me. Thank you, Brother Allen, for creating this video. 🙏🏾❤️
Happy to see/hear you back brother. Your as steady as Big Ben. Lot's of people are praying for you...keep fighting.
God Bless You Allen, the word was truth and I want to be Free to complete the assignment God gave me🙏🏾
If anyone would’ve preached on gluttony, I think Charles Stanley would be one of them… he is greatly missed, and sadly, his son is not even holding a candle to his legacy…
We can pray for his return to the truth so that he can re-saddle the old and new testament back together as it should be.
Dr. Charles Stanley covered Everything.. he was an excellent teacher and Pastor. One of the best.. May he rest in peace ❤
Yes! You're doing the video that I requested. Thank you, brother Allen. 🙏 The fact that you can relate to this and laugh at yourself had me laughing at myself as well while also realizing what a huge problem/sin this is for me. ❤
You are so welcome sister! Good video suggestion!
Yesssss I’ve been saying this lately, that nobody talks about this! Thank you for making this video, brother Allen.
ive put "getting to a healthy weight" on my prayer list. With Christ I can do it!
Me too dear sister
You are loved Deborah ❤️
Coming from a medical professional, a patient’s gratitude to Jesus and overflowing kindness shines through any physical imperfection. I want to encourage you in your ambition to gain a healthier body, and to continue in your humble spirit. It is a difficult road but Christ be with you every step!
@@joshcarver7930 Thank you! May you be encouraged in Christ as well!
Thank you for bringing this topic up and breaking it down! Much appreciated 🌻
Very true, skinny ppl can struggle w gluttony too!
Can you talk about phone addiction?
Amen. I agree that this would be a fantastic topic. God bless you.
God bless you too!!
Great subject. You’re right no one preaches and teaches on it. Great job!!! I enjoy your podcasts amongst only a few others. Y’all are doing a great job exposing the false teachers. May God Bless you and your family
This one was for me! I didn't even notice it until the LORD brought it to my attention. Now I'm praying the LORD helps me out this.
My over eating comes from boredom and loneliness
Same! I'm not working right now and sometimes I just sit around the house by myself and think "What can I do?" And I just go to food cuz it's there
Grab the bible and read it when you feel bored or lonely. I started this and it help me. I feel for you as I had the same problem. Keep you in my prayer🙏@@kimk4394
@@kimk4394Grab the bible and read when you feel you want to snack. I have started it as I will snack because I am bored. It really helped me. Keep you in my prayer🙏

Yea! So good to have you back. I pray you and your family continual blessings!
My Hands are all the way up;and you can see it;Amen,Praise God for message 😇😇😇♥️♥️♥️🍮🍮🎄🎄🙏🏻🙏🏻🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Brilliant.
Talks about Gluttony and proceeds to show delicious food on the video…. Now I need to go eat 😂
IKR!!! 😅
😂
Food provides quick comfort during stressful times, the worse the food the higher comfort it seems
Brother Parr - thank you for this. I’ve struggled all my life with this and have never heard it preached like this before. Really enjoy your content!
My grandmother always used to remind me to leave a part of my stomach empty so that it could be filled with light. As I grew older, I realized that this light was spiritual, and that by doing so, space is created to attract energy.
Love this ❤
Excellent and much needed!
Thank you for talking about uncomfortable but needed subjects
Rarely ever talked about.
Brother Parr is bringing it to the table.
I have a suggestion: What about Overcoming Relationship Dramas from all Three situations...
1 Insecurities,
2 Communication Issues,
3 Need Of Attention,
I would be interested in this topic as well
Thank you for this. The struggle is real. Very real!😞
This only works if you are actually eating correct portion sizes. Not gorging yourself at each meal.
Yes, the snacking constantly was a problem for me
It might help people eat less. Some people snack throughout the day, all day and even at night. Having set times brings routine and discipline and helps not to eat too often. Portion sizes are important to watch too.
This is a powerful video. Gluttony is the one sin that no preacher talks about. We have a bunch of 400 pound preachers condemning everyone to hell.
GOD PLEASE FORGIVE ME🙏 HELP ME GOD TO FIGHT WITH YOUR STRENGTH AND TRUTH GOD!
Just as i sat down with two doughnuts....ok Lord, i hear you.
So glad to hear you speak about this. My husband and I are both working on this and our church gatherings add to the difficulty.
THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THIS! 🙏
I committed to fasting today to deal with gluttony and your video was the FIRST on my feed! This hit home, thank you, Pastor❤
Wow. I pray for this most days. Thank you
I knew from the title what the subject would be. Thank you for doing this and especially for being so honest about your own struggle...even though you are slender. I'm an emotional eater...please remember all of us in prayer.😢❤
You handled this subject very well, Allen. This video has been very helpful. I'm praying for God's help to overcome this sin.
Amen! Thank you for speaking about this! I struggle with this the most!
dont let your belly be your God
Thank you for talking about it and great tips. I've always stuggled with my weight. Lost a lot, gained a lot. But now that I gave my heart to Jesus, I have to pray to HIM to help me control it. Thanks a lot. Be blessed.
This was beyond convicting, I need to repent of this. Thank you brother for sharing!
I've struggled with this and had been praying about it. This video is right on time
Brother Allen.... Please pray for my struggles with this . I've recently experienced a divorce and have turned to food as a comfort and Lord knows I'm trying to manage my emotions and I do make excuses.... Please please pray for me in Jesus Christ name thank you in advance ❤
I clicked on the video while eating a snack 😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I can’t!! 😒😂
😂😂🤣🤣
SAME HERE!
My husband and I had this conversation many times. It’s time for us to stand up and start preaching to our fellow brothers and sisters about this topic
Thank you so much Allan for this video! You are so lucky it doesn’t show on the outside. I used to have all of these for food but not anymore thank you Jesus! ❤
This is refreshing. I have been talking with some of my sisters in Christ, about how this is the one sin that is never ever ever mentioned.
Allen you’re so funny!!!! Thank you for all you do everyday 🩵
I finally took one and as I was taking the biggest first bite our pastor said, “Now let’s talk about gluttony.”
Convicted.
The MOST IMPORTANT word in this whole video that stuck out to me was BALANCE! Thank you!
This is convicting, especially around the Holidays
Thank you for letting God use you to deliver this insightful message! I needed to hear this! ❤
Thank u Brother Allen for such an excellent video, extremely informative 🙏🏿
I had two reminisces as I watched this:
I remember way back in the late 70s a discussion between a brother and sister in my congregation.
