Another option is grabbing the wrist with both hands and pulling down with all your strength, and tucking your chin into the crook of his elbow, thus protecting your windpipe. Then you apply your follow-up moves.
@@mattthompson4868 That is why I teach thumb breaking early. He is absolutely right about turning the head to protect the windpipe. And you are right that no matter what you choose to do, staying calm helps. Also training for fear is best.
1 Grab choking arm to release pressure. 2 place arm deep over opposite shoulder( as Stephan did) 3 Use oppononants upward pressure to move feet to opposite side of choke. 4 collapse his left leg and go to ground with him. 4 grind forearm in to throat to effect release of choke( you are on the wrong side for ur opponent to finish choke). 5 you are now in excellent side control position. Some very interesting points as always, and instant good mood too 😉 One of the things that I have learned from training in self defence that would generally be overlooked in wresting/sports of that nature, is "Inserting Strikes to the Technique". Meaning where I would absolutely study the life out of this, I would always add a "Softener" to the Technique. Where? Initially when you are looking up to defend against the grabbing, I would do that and at the same time strike the groin with my closest hand - to discourage him from pulling your neck up and pressing with his hips. You could also insert that strike as you grab his wrist with your other hand, if he has the hold, and then put that arm over the shoulder and continue the technique. "Inserting" "Softeners" can really go a long way in self defence. Just thought I'd add a bit of my own advice. As always, massive respect to you and your channel, and your teaching.
When I transitioned out of the USMC. Ended up in Santa Barbara California. Ended up becoming homeless. There was this dude named Ron Pedersen (another homeless person). Who didn't like veterans too much. One day. Ron decided to confront me. Ron. Came up to push me. He was obviously trying to fight me on his terms. He attempted to push me again, and received a judo throw over my left shoulder. Ron, unfortunately had no judo training and was slammed down on the concrete sidewalk. Fortunately.Ron did not suffer from anything other than complete humiliation. As things turned out. I gained the reputation of giving people a flying lesson. And you maim before you kill. Why? Because life is precious! I'm definitely not a billy badass, even though I have been actively training in the martial arts since 1975. What I have learned is that you de-escalate before you employ martial arts training. Use your brain first slick.

This technique works well even on bigger, stronger opponents. I have practiced this technique on bigger guys. Once you have wrapped your arms around his head and drop down, you have a tremendous amount of leverage to your advantage. It does work very well.
if it is in the street - a groin strike or a grab of the balls and squeeze = but you must be quick and strike hard - there is also an accupressure point on the jaw just under the jaw about in line with the corner of the mouth ! good luck and thank you for the great video and - heads up top of the class !

Great video Sensei, it is very illustrative. Thank you for posting this... BTW, I really liked the intro....it is the funiest you've made so far😂😂😂 Greetings from Guadalajara, Jalisco, México ☺
If you can stall the choke and get the arm draped, you could use that weight on the shoulder to pin the choker while you circle toward the opposite side enough to sweep the far leg at the knee, breaking their structure. Somebody, probably a BJJ guy, has a video showing that counter somewhere on YT.
The arm over the shoulder helps, but that arm can also be used to attack the groin or that arm can support the other arm keeping the choke from being tight and then shoulder roll against the attackers hands to break open the choke
Once you reach over the shoulder move your to that side making a T with his body and yours. Your pelvis to his hip. Breaking his posture with knee bump. Taking him to the ground then use forearm choke to break the head lock if necessary.
If you block the knee it keeps them from moving their hips forward and finishing. You can then move to the side you are pulling the shoulder down and knee tap for the take down.
Another way is after you have thrown your hand over their shoulder is to take a big looping step to that same side (have to reach deep with the arm to get the leverage) and try get your stepping leg behind their leg. Then bump the back of their knee and drive with your upper body and take them down ending up in side control!
I have seen a move where you hang your arm over the shoulder to pin that foot a bit, circle around to that side and then buckle their opposite-side leg.
The science to getting out of a guillotine is to make the elbow joint go up against the waist hinge. The hand over the back to stop the arch is correct but you don't want to stay standing. This is the technique that I was taught. Sit down and roll into them so you get side control. Put your forearm on their neck with one arm and use the other arm to control their hip and arch your back up while forcing your forearm on their neck. You arch with your back and waist. Your waist is going against their elbow and they are forced to let go of the guillotine. Just like an arm bar is elbow joint against waist so is the escape from the guillotine that I've just described. This guillotine escape works. Give it a try in sparring. Once you have it you will laugh at how easy it is and you won't be frightened of guillotines anymore.
Grab his arm with the left hand to ease the choke on your neck. With the right foot step to the outside where arm is holding you. Make sure right foot is now behind his right foot. Now uppercut your right hand, with a forward motion, to the outside. Your shoulder will drive a point breaking his grip if not his hand. You should now end up on the outside holding his arm ready for a follow up.
Thank you both, another excellent video and great tips! 🙏 I really like the acknowledgement of what you can do to them, they can also do to you. Who is faster, who is better trained and experienced, who makes a mistake first...Grappling is like chess, each side has the same pieces and capabilities but it comes down to awareness, strategy and correct application (paraphrasing my old bjj professor). Real life fight advice. Just got put in one of these some days ago on the street. That was the third or fourth time it happened on the street to me. My fists rocked his face before and after he head butted me, and I went easy on him to not break the glass when he fell and held on to my shirt and ripped it. But, it was hard to get out that guillotine at the end this time, lol. My neck and back are injured, if I were normal I’d be stronger and would have gotten out of the hold. But, I did pop him up real nice many times and he didn’t hit me once (except the headbutt). I had two people holding me and not him. I hate it when that happens…
If the guillotine is already locked in tight you can also go for a double leg takedown and pass his guard into side mount (make sure your head and feet are on the opposite side of his body) that way he wont be able to choke you out anymore. You can then 2 on 1 hand fight his grip / stall and wait for his arms to gas out or go for a von flue choke (look it up for more details) and choke him out yourself. This is the standard counter against any beginner in the mma gym or on the streets that try to get a (standing) guillotine on you. Good luck and have fun!
I love this chokehold.....😘someone comes at you , you move fast they trip don't hesitate to do this chokehold stand your ground and get ready to put that pressure 😂don't stop until the fight is in your favor lol..I've done this plenty of times when I've felt my oponest are stronger or bigger peple that have sweaters....are so easy to get a chokehold
If you do a forearm strike into the groin to get the hips to go back… We hope which will lower the head and make it easier for you to grab. We use this as a potential ad on technique… It doesn’t always work of the guys got a longer torso is putting you in the guillotine then go back to regular BJJ style, there’s two that are very effective the arm hang getting to the side of the body with the back trip take down or… Krav Maga has a good answer when you punch the guy in groin ( with your forearm) and then punch out of the guillotine if it’s not deep water tight.
This is why "Distancing" is so important. I keep a good 5 to 6 feet between me and the attacker. I am fortunate to possess quick feet, which also translates to quick footwork. By keeping my distance, I not only prevent choke-holds---I am able to to quickly look around my surroundings. Having long arms is a blessing as well; My hand speed enables me to strike rapidly, like a cobra.
I like these counters especially the arm over the shoulder . I think it’s funny that people say if your on the street hit in the balls. I guess that’s an option , but get caught by someone who actually will crank your neck off and see if you choose taking a groin shot with not much leverage , most likely you’re protecting your neck and throat . We’re talking about split seconds to respond depending.
As a former street fighter , i know what works. One factor its not play fighting. Its life and death. This would include accidentaly killing someone or being killed because you think you study the arts but don't apply if you run across a real fighter. Dont take advice from the jabronies as they will get you killed. More lesson on how to use your mind to avoid conformation.
Noice!! The arm over the shoulder and other hand protecting the neck helps ALOT!!! My brother is really big a lot bigger then me and we will be cranking the guillotine so hard that my legs get lifted off the round. But all the force in going into my arms and not my neck if that makes sense. The gracies have some cool.ones where if your big you can fall back and they have to let go. If not there face will hit the ground. They have a couple of others as well. Anyways good video and I like seeing you guys team Up!
Very well done, explanation AND production values. Sorry about that chipped tooth though! Ouch! Shows it even happens to pros. You've always gotta be super careful.
1: drop a knee and put an arm in between his legs and lift him up, he should let go, then you kneel as you bring him down and break his back. 2: pull their leg out and go for a single leg if you have to, if they won’t drop when you do. 3: strike the balls 4: drop and use deadweight, then trip them by putting pressure forward on their knee with your right against your left, or apply a double leg tackle. 5: bite them. Rip open the flesh. 6: use dead weight and go straight into a double leg tackle, it may or may not break the grip depending on what grip he is using.
When you pivot after raising your head just grab his shoulder and throw him to the ground... it is simpler and easier if you are not as strong as the other guy.
I respect Stephan's honesty in his teaching. He is confident and knowledgeable, but realistic. Can't ask for much more than that.

I have seen a move where you hang your arm over the shoulder to pin that foot a bit, circle around to that side and then buckle their opposite-side leg.
I think I know what you mean… it's a good one to know!
Thank you for the advice!

Grab his arm with the left hand to ease the choke on your neck. With the right foot step to the outside where arm is holding you. Make sure right foot is now behind his right foot.
I think that’s true, Frank. The ball shot is often overrated. Thanks for the comment!
That beginning made me laugh out loud and I'm on a film set. Damn you.
Ha! “Cut! Who was that? You’re fired!” Sorry…
Ando Mierzwa lol it's all good. Love your channel.
Thanks very much!
First martial arts video instructional that invokes prayer
It’s always implied. :-)
Avoidance is always number one!
implying "street fighters" know real fighting aka mixed martial arts
The best way to escape this is for the guy in the choke to finish a take down to side control it instantly relieves the pressure.
Could you do some videos on how to escape rear bear hugs, full nelson etc.
Slowly, but surely! 👍🏼
Man! You and your brother don't play around! :) Thanks for the comment!
Very well done, explanation AND production values. Sorry about that chipped tooth though! Ouch! Shows it even happens to pros. You've always gotta be super careful.
Absolutely! It’s always the shot you don’t see coming! Thanks for the kindness, Dave! 🙏🏻
again thank you very helpful
Great to hear! Thank you for the comment!

the squickiness of the mat makes my skin tingles.
Wet pool area. Yes, it was annoying... and dangerous! 😄
that is a awesome technique ando, thanks
Thank you for watching!
1: drop a knee and put an arm in between his legs and lift him up, he should let go, then you kneel as you bring him down and break his back.
2: pull their leg out and go for a single leg if you have to, if they won’t drop when you do.
3: strike the balls
4: drop and use deadweight, then trip them by putting pressure forward on their knee with your right against your left, or apply a double leg tackle.
5: bite them. Rip open the flesh.
6: use dead weight and go straight into a double leg tackle, it may or may not break the grip depending on what grip he is using.
Always appreciate ideas. Thank you, sir!
Awesome! Thank you!

At 3:01 would a smash, grab and crush of the attacker's balls be any use to help out?
Add it to the plan!
When you pivot after raising your head just grab his shoulder and throw him to the ground... it is simpler and easier if you are not as strong as the other guy.
Great technique!
Thank you for watching!
