I am shooting the muzzleloader I built from different rifles. I am adjusting the border loads to see if I can tighten my groups. nest video we will adjust patch thickness.
My T/C Renegade in 50 cal, and my T/C Seneca in 45 cal, both shot best with conical bullets. But you are right, every gun is different. I enjoyed the video and Hawkenstein project and am looking forward to see how it all winds up
I would recommend that you stop tapping down your ball. You should only push it down until it come in good solid contact with the powder. That way you will be more consistent with you load. When you tap on the ball down you load tightness will be inconsistent and give you different burns on every shot. This is what I was taught some 30+ yrs ago when I fist started with black powder. Hope this is helpful. Good luck and keep your powder dry.
Was that a smoking patch I saw? From the looks of that last group, I'm thinking that gun may like 55 or 60 grains. And I agree with Randall. Other than having some fouling on it, that patch should look like you could use it again. I've got some ticking I'll send you to try so you don't have to go buy some before you see if that's the fix.
50 grains is nearly a pistol load. I'd start at 90 and go up to 110. Also a ledsled is a great investment for sighting in guns. I know your running a brass brush after each shot but didn't see you doing it. I went to an inline with a scope about 20 years ago shooting conicals and 209 primers that way if Bullwinkle steps out at 200 yards I can knock him down. I still have my old smokepole and enjoy a challenge but also like all the legal advantages I can get hunting public lands in Florida primarily, and to me them old guns are a ah handicap. Love your show git er done keep cool.
@@randybeeson3424 they are most definitely a handicap but that is why we love em so much . If i let one get by me i dont sweat it much . My reason for being there is my love of the Outdoors. Try to find a fired patch, they tell a lot, like a sparkplug on an engine. My great plains rifle likes the .018 pillow ticking. I wash it before cutting up into patch rolles.
You need to use T/C maxi balls preluded with that 1/48 twist barrel somewhere around 90 grains of powder that’s what that gun is made for and you will be happy!

I shoot 110 grains in my Johnathan Browning and 100 grains in my CVA just due the fact that it's an inline. Good video Justin. God bless you and your followers.
I dont care to shoot these big magnum inline charges of powder that some folks seem to think you need but i will say due to the 1:48 twist of a Thompson barrel 80gr is typically the barrier of entry for 👌 accuracy. The Thompson equation for a .50 has long been .490 ball .018 LUBED patch n 80gr to start. They did make those barrels to shoot their maxi-balls very very well, however 1:48 was a compromise between 1:32 and 1:66. Their is absolutely no reason why a tompson should not shoot prb accurately at 60 yards, that is nonsense. I really do appreciate the idea of using what you have but when it comes to stuff like this using willy nilly components will alot of times give you willy nilly results. ❤
60 grains of 2f goex. A wonder wad or patch over powder then a .490 round ball with .018 pillow ticking patch works well in the tc guns. I like to use either wonder lube or a homemade lube for patches. Like the videos and good luck with the recipe and powder burner
Justin: Just a thought, but I'd try 55 grains of FFFg and .018" patch. Just something I've done for my rifle customers and myself. In any event, if you play with it long enough you'll get it. Consistency is the name of the game. Whatever you do do the same thing every time. I see that you still have that ball starter.:~))) God bless: Two Feathers
There's 2 kinds of people out There's...one is hunters the other is shooters....i tend to lean towards the hunters who have field experience......i seen 65 grains shoot xlean through a brodside shot ot 25 yards......choose your experts
I agree, but another problem is alot of hunters have no idea what they are doing or talking about when it comes to running a muzzleloader. Their only experience in the field is adding a week to their hunting season. Their components came off the wall at cabelas, n they are confused when they see somebody shooting anything less than an artillery charge of powder. Alot of people that only use a muzzloader to hunt dont even understand that pyrodex is not blackpowder.
Black powder is not in my arsenal but on my list... if its brown its down... backstraps yummy... I will be doing achery this yr. Unless I move to the 40 acres im looking at kinda close to Canada
I am working on zeroing in my Kibler. It’s interesting how many different things change my groups. It all may be putting lipstick on a pig as I have a bit of a flinch I have been fighting for years. Frank
What you need to do is try different grains of powder in your coffee. The one that tastes the best you don't want. The one that tastes the worst you don't want. What you need is something in the middle with a good gag reflex but not enough to cross your eyes.
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors I had a good buddy one time doctored my coffee just that way.. the coffee where we worked was so bad I couldn't tell the difference till I got halfway through the cup. Bless you and yours, Justin .
You should be able to blow them caps off with the wind you got.🤣 Now serious, I shot black powder and think you should sight it at a closer distance like say 25 or 20 yards. At 50 or 60 what you do has to much effect on the gun and doesn't give you a good read on what the gun is doing. Get it shooting good groups close and then reach out and you won't have to walk so far on a hot day.
I don't know if they all are, but most of the Thompson Center barrels I have heard of are around 1 turn in 48 inches, which is not so good for round balls in a 50. They like 1 turn in close to 6 foot. You can do a quick check with a tight patch on a cleaning rod with a mark at 24 inches. If it makes 1/2 a turn in that 24 inches, you should get you some bullets..... You shoulda kept your pillow for hunkerin down on and keepin your britches clean and dry when you kneel down
Round ball don't like the 1 in 48 twist of the T/C rifles to much. 1 in 66 is much better for RB. try a maxi ball or Lee R.E.A.L bullets. lube only. no patch.
That smoking patch ??? not anuff lube maybe ? precut , prelube patches ; 490 roundball @deamn patch shoud be tight or 495 @ thin patch ;; 60 or 65 grs should get the job done YES ;; HOW is your HOLD always the same yes ;;Thats why we love it
Justin that gun is shooting horrible! how is the bore? how does your patches look? that is the 2 key things, not the powder charge or kind of lube. if the bore is rough that may be all the accuracy that you will ever get. if the patches are blowen or burned up, is because the bore is rough, or the patch is too thin or loose. that is where you need to look first.

Thicker
The barrel twist may be too fast for good accuracy from a patched ball. A maxi ball might give a better result.
