  • Here are just a few examples of audio routing in and out of the Zed R 16 using Ableton Live. This is my normal recording setup and really enjoy the flexibility provided by this mixer paired with Live.

      I know, it’s gutting that Apple didn’t continue supporting FireWire. I use a Mackie 1220i which is great but on its way out now too much hum. So sat on High Sierra for the meanwhile. Are there any modern consoles that allow full usb multi tracking like the Signature mtk series? That sadly isn’t getting updated firmware wise from Soundcraft.

      @@Tobes1100 sucks so bad. Right when I was excited to upgrade my 10 year old computer, I realize that it will cut support for the centerpiece of my studio: the R16. Originally I figured, “well maybe I can get some Focusrite interface with ADAT in and at least I’d still get the 18 channels in from my R16, but I’m hearing that you can’t even activate the DICE control to send/receive ADAT clock. I’m at such a loss!

    hello mate, my name is Daniel and I use the ZED R16 Firewire desk too. But I got problem, Reciently I updated my mac to OSMojave. And my macBookPro doesn´t find any device. The way i conect my console to the computer is one firewire 800 to 400 to a firewire to thunderbolt adapter. then i use a thunderbolt 1 to usb-c adapter. It should be the correct way, but make know if im wrong.
    I have tried to conect the desk to other macbook pro computer with High Sierra software and Firewire inputs . And I had the same problem.
    I haved tried too many things but nothing worked. I use the drivers from the official allen heath page for High sierra... so i dont understand it.
    Could you help me out? thank you and i will follow ur videos 'cause they are realley helpfull for me. See you soon buddy.

      Thank you! I'm not an expert on troubleshooting these boards, but it sounds like your FireWire port might be faulty. I am running High Sierra with driver v4.3.1.47542 for Zed. I am connecting through a hub.

    Can you please explain to me exactly how I have to connect / complete the following set so that I can record the music on Ableton? ZED R16, TR-909, TR-808, TB-303, RME-800 (audio interface), Ableton (DAW)

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  4 роки тому +1

      Well, if you plug the mix outs from the 808+909 as well as mono out from 303 into the R16, you can just do it that way, use R16 as your interface and go. Or you could use the rme as interface, whatever your preference. If you're planning on using all of the individual outs at the same time, you will need to create an aggregate device (idk if this is possible on pc, but works on mac) and then use both at the same time, you will need to configure tracks into groups once recorded and ready to mix in analog domain using R16.. Nice gear you got there, Good luck.

    how do you go with recording and latency etc

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  3 роки тому

      Generally try to avoid it as much as possible, deal with each case as it comes up. there's not a "fix it and forget it" that I've found yet that works in all cases. It will depend on plugins being used and the routing in the daw. Printing tracks to audio and then making sure they are in time is useful. I havent't noticed any issues with latency and overdubbing, I multitrack hw + fx, seems to sit right with most plug-ins. I've used. I will confess that I'm not much of a stickler on latency issues, as I try to just make sure it sounds right with as little configuration as possible. When in doubt, print to audio, check it, make adjustments as needed.

    awesome/.....at 16 steps ..i put out 'an all alerts' on your other post on the zed 16....i'm totally into the desk again......didn't use for a while.....there are two things i just don't get right now....the transport inside ableton from the zed 16 and the idea of aux to hardware for effects........if it were possible i'd totally dig some back n' forth.....on that ...the other is that i thought i was the only person in the world using ableton with zed 16....it's ''hard to believe that there's nobody out there....hard to believe i'm all alone...''.....but it's so great to know as of just watching this clip that i'm not alone......

    • @16Steps

      I replied earlier, but it looks like my post vanished. To sum up, you should make sure Zed's transport is sending midi note.info and not mmc. Then set it as a control surface in Ableton (just above the midi I/o in prefs) and assign like you would any other controller. Hope that helps! 🙏

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  3 роки тому

      I can't fully answer that question, but I do know that it provides the additional channels for ADAT i/o, so if not available immediately, I would guess that you could route it through your DAW out of and back into one of the 16 analog channels using insert there. Thank you for watching!

      Gladly! Can you clarify what you mean by "routing map"? Are you talking about audio routing? Ableton? I use a dock from OWC (Other World Computing) that has a FW800 port on it. The two FW ports on the Zed (and other FW devices) are typically used to daisy-chain multiple FW devices. Just a single FW cable will provide both IN and OUT connectivity between devices.

    I am trying to compare this to the new SSL Big SiX which costs about double I think. - but being a DJ this seems more my style. - Can you send any channel to your Timeline? - I have a feeling I am going to miss the compressor on the SiX but cant I just add an external compressor and use the FX, send-return? - but I guess you cant apply different amounts of lets say the Timeline - at the same time to diff channels? - You need to pick a channel thats using the Timeline?

    • @16Steps
      @16Steps  2 роки тому

      The ssl is not really the same league of beast. Important things to consider for this a&h board are connectivity and support going forward. Yes you can put the timeline on a send and send different amounts of each channel to the timeline, then (method I use) track timeline on two mono channels panned LR (usually 15&16 for example) There are inserts on the mains for stereo buss compression. Analog routing is it's strength; connectivity (FireWire) and support from a&h are the trade off.

      @@brentgreeff1115 yes, I record it on two mono channels and print those to audio in the daw. It also allows you to send those signals to other outboard as well, compressors, reverbs etc. You have the option of using one of the 4 stereo channels to return to, but you those don't send separate tracks to the daw to record, those only record through the main mixbus (channels 17&18) into the daw.

I should just do it :) - its gonna be great.

      @@brentgreeff1115 yes, this is a whole different ball of wax from that setup for sure. While you can adjust input and mix level on the timeline, having a mixer to be able to adjust the gain and level of the channels is very handy. Printing audio will also open up other possibilities for the recorded material as well. ✌🏼
