    You can’t go wrong with Allen Heath. I know this is subjective and pre-production audio, but I’d love to hear the Ludwig toms with a little more ring to them, but that’s a personal preference for me. Thank you for the video. BTW: you have a great wash on the cymbals.

      Thank you! The toms probably sound the way they do because of the heads I have on them right now. They are Evans EC2 and have some dampening built in. This vintage Ludwig kit has a great tone but the sustain is not very long on the toms like more modern kits. They are great for some things and not as good for others. I also have a PDP seven piece kit I'm thinking about featuring in some videos. I have been wanting to get a little more sustain out of the Ludwig Toms though. Next time I have extra cash to change the heads again, I might try something different. Thanks again!

      When I use the Ludwigs, I'll usually use some compression with a fast release to lengthen the tom decay a bit. It works OK and keeps the woody tone of the vintage drums. Might still try some different heads. I also have like 7 snare drums but I tend to like the Acrolite the best for most of the work I do.

      Yes, the RNC is really nice! I used on the master bus in the last Zed R16 video. It's normally on my voice mic for the videos in super nice mode too!

    Hey - it's amazing that you now have a Zed R16! I got a Sountracs, then a Soundcraft Sapphyre, and had an R16 before those two, so it's almost like we're collecting the same gear. How do you rate the R16 against the Sapphyre? Mine isn't yet operational, but I'm working with a local tech to get it functioning again. I've been using the R16 again recently because it is just so easy to route stuff via Firewire - I do an initial analog mix and print the results with outboard gear, then can do further processing later.

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  9 місяців тому +1

      The Zed R16 definitely sounds amazing and better than I expected it to. I could easily use the R16 for any kind of project without worrying about the sound quality. I am an analog guy and the sound really works well as far as the preamps and summing. I only prefer my Sapphyre due to the huge amount of connections for my analog gear with its built in patchbay. The consoles sounds a bit different though. At first I almost thought the R16:sounded better than the Sapphyre but on direct comparison, they are equal but different with the Sapphyre having more depth and width and the R16 being slightly warmer in the high mids while still being very clean. The experience of using the R16 is overall very good but it misses some features that I use on my Sapphyre mainly actual analog subgroups. That can be worked around by using the Aux sends for things like parallel compression but you lose Aux sends and additional inputs when used that way. The Zed R16 is perfect for tracking and summing especially when you're doing more processing in the box but does still allow for the use of analog gear in the mixing process. My R16 has a flaky routing switch so I can't use the insert on channel 1 when mixing or summing. That works out OK because I can process that channel's source in the box. I hope that helps and let me know if you have anything else you'd like to discuss. I love taking audio with people! Thanks again for your comment!

      Thanks @@TwinCreekAudio ! I have the tech coming round again tomorrow to work on the Sapphyre, and am looking forward to comparing them if I ever get the desk working. Indeed, the patchbay in the Sapphyre is a huge part of the appeal for me. I use a lot of plugins in conjunction with outboard gear, though, and the Zed R16 is just so good for routing in and out of the box. One day the Firewire will die, so I got into other desks just to switch to USB, but the Zed R16 is the cleverest tool for hybrid mixing ever invented imo.

      @@bertraven9815 The Sapphyre is a very solid desk. It's built like a tank and it's pretty easy to work on being modular. The only issues I've ever had with mine were the power supplies thoughI have had some flaky patch points as well. Those have mostly been dirty connections so not a big deal.

    • @bertraven9815
      @bertraven9815 9 місяців тому +1

      @@TwinCreekAudio ha - you are not wrong on the power supplies. The tech has already had them in the lab, but this morning decided there was still an issue with one of them when testing the desk. He can't yet work out what it is. In the meantime, the Zed R16 is doing a grand job on band recording sessions.

    I'm interested in seeing the ZED R16 as an ADAT expander for mixing -- send the tracks or busses out through the ZED for EQ & outboard inserts then back into the interface. Does this make sense?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  11 місяців тому

      I think I can do that but I'll have to research it with my setup to see how I could set everything up without taking apart my studio. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

    I have the Zed r16 ,I don't use it that much anymore since I now have the cranborne R8, I still have it and I won't be getting rid of it. I wish there was a way to convert it from fire wire to USB

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  11 місяців тому

      I wish there were a simple way to do that as well. I've heard you can use a thunderbolt to firewire adapter and it will work with Mac up to Monterey at least. You need a USB style thunderbolt for newer Macs and it won't work on the M1 M2 chips. I suppose you can also use it with the ADAT connections and newer interface that's has USB. The sound quality is really surprising on the Zed R16. I'm not sure if I will keep it on not but it would be nice for a secondary mix room so I might. Love that is has 2 sets of monitor outs.

      My Dad purchased them used in about 1968. He passed them on to me about 10 years ago. I have done nothing much to them other than had one bearing edge on the floor tom repaired and of course the choice of heads and cymbals to match the tone of the kit. Most of the original cymbals and hardware are either gone or in storage now.

    Do you phaze align drum tracks? I really recommend to do so.

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes, sometimes I will do that but not for this video. The videos already take a huge amount of time and I also try to be more honest to the original sound with less digital manipulation. But yes, I will phase align tracks if needed on most projects.

    What computer and or Os are you using ? Many people have trouble with compatibility ✌🏽

    • @TwinCreekAudio

      I was able to use it without issue with Windows 10 and macOS Monterey. Monterey is as high as the driver would for me and the same with Windows 10. It does not work with Windows 11 or at least I could not get it to work. Anything macOS above Monterey removes firewire support and Windows 10 might get flaky with all the updates MS pushes out. I do not have this console anymore so further testing won't be possible. I would say that you need to have some experience with drivers on different OS versions and troubleshooting such things if you want to use this or any FireWire console. The Zed still works but it's not going to be plug and play like it was when released. These came out when Windows 7 and OS X Lion were current OS versions.
