I agree so much man, whenever I watch reviews they are always complaining about what was not included in the set or how inaccurate it is which is why I love watching his reviews even if I am not very interested in the sets its so great to see a positive view on things!

@@foodisscarce okay you say that but listen to how much the 2004 version of the shrieking shack costed back then and what it would translate to now. Sure inflation has gotten out of control but that’s not legos fault, and they aren’t even close to being the only company to raise prices based on the increase. The only thing Lego is doing now that they haven’t done in the past is they’re releasing a bunch more large, complex, and expensive sets for the 18+ line. Yes their product line has a higher mean price, but on average they match the value of what you’re getting in the package. In other words, Lego has always been expensive, and the reason you might not think this is the case is thanks to the good old rose tinted nostalgia goggles. I really don’t see anything that inherently makes them greedy these days. They’re giving fans the stuff they’ve been wanting for years, but what they’ve been asking for is expensive products.
Both sets are pretty cool. I globally prefer the new shack but the candy shop and the transforming device are quite nice. If you cannot afford both to mix them, as you said, buy the one that's on shelves at its normal price. And don't forget to have fun... and a great life.
I was always intrigued as a kid about the big transformer piece from 2004 when I saw the set in catalogs back in the day. I’m so glad you showed it of here in all of its glory, you could maybe try and incorporate it in one of your MOC’s as a challenge! haha
It's odd how Star Wars feels like it has this endless supply of vehicles to make sets out of, but Harry Potter does the opposite with a endless supply of buildings. They always tend to look pretty fancy, don't have any Harry Potter myself. Love these, also the Werewolf from the old one is the funniest but best thing

I love that you are a fan of many themes, but when you do HP, I'm very intrigued. I thought the 'spinning' feature on the newer whomping willow was fun. However, a full door sticker is a pain to place - if doors require texture - they need to be printed. NIce job on the comparison, Caleb.

Your review reminds me of my childhood, I’ve got the 2004 set for Christmas and I absolutely loved it. It was a great set and I enjoyed every minute of building it and playing with it. I should still have it, stored away in the attic. Thank you very much 😊.
I think it's kind of a bummer that there is a color deviation in the Dark Tan of the Lupin Werewolf minifig: While Legs and Head have a reddish hue, the torso/arms have a greenish hue. It's clearly to be seen at around 5:30. I guess your set was produced in Mexico for the North American market, while my set comes from Czech Republic for the European market, but I have exactly the same color deviation! It's a shame since it is an exclusive minifig in a 90 Euro set! Surprisingly, the Dark Tan on the Human Lupin minifig they get right!

The advent calendar's Cho Chang as well as the blue CMF Dumbledore also had deviating hues of Light Aqua and Bright Light Blue respectively :( But it makes me especially mad when it comes to sets as LEGO increasingly builds IP sets around exclusive minifigures and I had not one set in the last months with not at least one printing error or similar quality issues with an exclusive fig :( And when I build with Dark Tan, I'm buying ca. 30% parts more than I need on BL or PAB to make sure I have enough parts in either the reddish or the greenish hue because it drives me MAD! :D
Both sets are incredible. There's something magical about the older one, even if I wasn't even born then but the newer one has the better figures and overall better build.

@@CheeseyStudios I may, I rebuilt a few of the sets from the tub, and quite a lot of pieces were missing. (It was a huge 40 gallon tub we got for $75, Had a gem of a set inside. The Black Pearl. Missing it’s sails and flag and some minor pieces.the rest of the set was all there)
I actually really like the original serious black minifigure more so than the newer one, maybe change up the hair and I think it’s one of my favorite Harry Potter minifigures I’ve seen. Great video and can’t wait to see more MCL vids!
It's interesting to see how priorities have shifted in the design of these two sets. TLG can still make really fun, whimsical stuff, but it seems like they're hyper-focused on detail and "realism" in their licensed IPs now.
I think that above a certain price point, there shouldn't be stickers and just use prints instead, the Daily Bugle for example annoyed me because of the stickers despite being a £285 set.
The 'sticker sheet problem' exists since the introduction of stickers. How do I know? Our son desperately wanted an old Ultra Agent set and we ordered one 'new' (which means sealed). After opening it, we found a totally destroyed loose sticker sheet with stickers scattered and... well... sticking all over the bags... :(
The werewolf figure is awesome! I think I like more the new one, but it would have been nice if the shack had the playability of the older one. But that is a problem easy to solve: combine the two sets into one! Imagine how big would be that Shrieking Shack :3
I really like both of sets! I agree that the old sets hat some kind of extra magic to them :) I've once had some stickers "melt off" (the stickers were on the sheet and the paint just dissapeared in some places) after sitting in the attick for a couple of years, so I don't reccomend doing thaat :P The only problem with the old one is it being built of mainly brittle brown bricks, but I guess that wouldn't really be an issue unless you drop it... After watching a few of your videos, I've noticed the stark difference between old sets and modern sets. Many old sets are focused on play features and are more focused towards kids having endless fun with their sets, whereas modern sets seem to aim more towards accuracy to movies which is really interesting seeing the evolution in their products.

The wolf flipping cracked me up so good lol... Couldn't have staged that if I tried! To be totally honest I didn't even see that crack until you pointed it out. I think I'm just used to it now xD
When I saw Lego were planning to reboot the Harry Potter Theme back in 2018, there were three buildings I desperately wanted them to remake: 1. The Burrow 2. Privet Drive 3. The Shrieking Shack Now they have made all three, and they are some of the most beautiful builds in my collection. A childhood dream has been completed!
The original did a much better job with parts usage. Although the new one has a more detailed snow look, I wouldn’t call it necessarily better however it will make the set much more expensive unfortunately. That’s really my issue with a lot of modern lego is it takes a lot more parts to do the same job and the price tag gets bloated because of it.
5:15 I'd say Lupin is a very underappreciated character on the whole. He was my favourite character after I read the books, and he's portrayed excellently in the films, but after Prizoner of Azkaban he's demoted to minor scenes, so a lot of his character arc after the thrid book goes unnoticed. I think this is why he's only had a few figures over the years. I've owned three, and can't decide if the one from the 2018 Hogwarts Epxpress or the 2022 Shrieking Shack is better.
2:47 It's because LEGO was using books or their own ideas until Goblet of Fire sets. But even with these sets, Voldemort for example has reprinted face design. Even 2010/2011 version includes older ideas. 2018 to today generation is the very first truely accurate to films
I never actually realized that the base of the whomping willow connected to the shrieking shack, but I already modified it so that the whomping willow stood on the base of my old Hogwarts whomping willow so it stands straight up, and I put the rest of the base next to it on the other side of my Lego table so it would look like you would go underneath the whomping willow and end up on the other side
I imagine Monster Fighters drew quite a bit of inspiration from the Studios line! There's a couple of cool spooky sets from the early 2000s in that theme.
Im not a exactly a Harry Potter fan (I'm not a NERDDD) but watching this was pretty interesting. I did learn a lot about old lego stuff, and man lego was weird in the early 2000s'. awesome video!
I still have this set, actually I have all sets from 2004. I have played with them but they're in a really good condition and I still have all the boxes.
I only have 3, that set (which is now broken and most of the pieces lost(Apart from the blue swirl, the stag, the top half of 1 dementor, the tree, Sirius and Harry)) and the great hall set (which is has broken recently because It was on one of 2 display shelves, I make a stupid mistake and the whole shelf crashed along with The Great Hall, The Creator Expert Mini, and another harry potter set.) AND another harry potter set with Hermione, Neville, and Mad- eye Moody/Barti Crouch Junior in his classroom(#4).😶
@@CheeseyStudios Knights Kingdom was my favorite theme growing up. Had 75% of the total sets. Got Vladeks castle for Christmas the year it came out and played with that set for years until by bother and cousin demolished it. Can’t wait!!!

@@CheeseyStudios it was the first major theme, other than Bionicle, I got into as a kid. The 3 major castles from the theme were all really well done. The 3rd wave caste always gave me Helms Deep vibes. One interesting thing I learned recently is that the purple motorcycle helmet has shot up in value recently for only being in two sets (both Knights Kingdom) since they introduction of the purple space man torso from Series 22.

I agree with the 2004 Pettigrew minifigure he looks more like Uncle Vernon than Pettigrew, I think the Lego Designers can’t tell the difference between Richard Griffiths As Uncle Vernon or Timothy Spall As Peter Pettigrew during 2004
the 2004 version has more appeal to me. I feel like this new one just seems like something I would get for part and pieces. Id say they are equal and that im never going to pay 150 dollars for less then 500 pieces.
Stickers are my number one oet hate for modern day Lego. You can sometimes excuse it forna £10/15 set. When its an expensive set or something clearly made to be displayed, stickers should never ever be used. I have so many Creator expert cars with stickers pealing off.
And PLASE dont speak abouth accuracy...a flat face whithout even true eyes color -.-" and no One wanna Say that but lego After 1/2 mouth max start to be annoing,ripetitive For all that Money didn't have a single sense ... Offcourse speaking of "BUY" intend whith your Money... If you find Money on a poket mabye ... If you find some one in a pallet whithout guarda for some minute you can stole. On that case yes that are nice,but Just on that case

I got that 2004 askaban set back in 2010 and it was such an enjoyable build when i was a kid. Very underrated.

I only have 3, that set (which is now broken and most of the pieces lost(Apart from the blue swirl, the stag, the top half of 1 dementor, the tree, Sirius and Harry))
and the great hall set (which is has broken recently because It was on one of 2 display shelves, I make a stupid mistake and the whole shelf crashed along with The Great Hall, The Creator Expert Mini, and another harry potter set.) AND another harry potter set with Hermione, Neville, and Mad- eye Moody/Barti Crouch Junior in his classroom(#4).😶

@@CheeseyStudios Knights Kingdom was my favorite theme growing up. Had 75% of the total sets. Got Vladeks castle for Christmas the year it came out and played with that set for years until by bother and cousin demolished it.

@@CheeseyStudios it was the first major theme, other than Bionicle, I got into as a kid. The 3 major castles from the theme were all really well done. The 3rd wave caste always gave me Helms Deep vibes.
One interesting thing I learned recently is that the purple motorcycle helmet has shot up in value recently for only being in two sets (both Knights Kingdom) since they introduction of the purple space man torso from Series 22.

Regarding the sets: New one wins by a good margin. Better (and more) minifigures, better looking, is available at a reasonable price. ;)

I actually think the older one looks better. It is a lot cleaner and not as messy.
the 2004 version has more appeal to me. I feel like this new one just seems like something I would get for part and pieces. Id say they are equal and that im never going to pay 150 dollars for less then 500 pieces.

Probably. It does feel like it unnecessarily inflated the price. Though it does look good!
Stickers are my number one oet hate for modern day Lego. You can sometimes excuse it forna £10/15 set. When its an expensive set or something clearly made to be displayed, stickers should never ever be used. I have so many Creator expert cars with stickers pealing off.
Ugh, yeah, that sucks. The stickers on curved surfaces are especially terrible
