We can but hope. Actually, I first heard the pipa about a year ago, knowing very little of Chinese culture, and yes! it was immediately obvious that this was something very beautiful that I wanted to hear more of. But the more I hear and learn about this, the more subtleties that I notice and appreciate. So no, one does not need to understand the cultural context, but it helps.
This musical instrument is called Pipa. The song tells a story about that the king is taking off his amour and going to committed suicide because he lost the battle. If I didn't misremember.
One of the best playing which I have seen. Tremendous control. What is more liked by most people is the histrionics..........many musicians know it. These are all classical music .......centuries old and great stuff...........hats off to the musician, the instrument, the music and the rendition..............
Your feeling is very accurate, shows that you really understood the music. The historical background for this piece is about the King of Chu, Xiang Yu, one of the great tragic heroes of Chinese history, on the eve of his last battle against overwhelming odds. So this piece is about a man trying to summon the courage to face his own death with dignity. A related piece is Farewell My Concubine, about Xiang Yu saying goodbye to his lover, who commits suicide.
@DexterC1984 , yes...when Europeans (I myself am European) were still living in caves talking in "Ungah-ungah" language, the Chinese were already playing fine instruments and developing a culture that astonishes everyone who dares digging in it a little bit...
If I were to hide something it would be in there hearts...thank you for me this music... Thom in Scotland... I visited this musician meny times And thanks to her truly... Thom.
The magnificence of this music is pure spiritual communication !! Such quality music is the ultimate universal language! It inspires people's souls to become connected with the feelings expressed & become more aware that we are not alone!! A million thanks to the composer & the pipa player for their exquisite artistry !!!
i like how the pipa has a classical, unique chinese tone to it. for a stringed instrument, it also has a percussion aspect to it when she strums very hard. its lovely :)
The pipa is a beautiful instrument, and the skill and passion this woman has are incredible and show very clearly. You can really feel the story she's telling, even if you aren't quite sure what it's about.
To come to know about the historical background of this music as well as the instrument, makes listening and viewing this piece all the more most interesting. Thank you!
wow, what a fantastic performance by this pipa lady player, the music reflects rage and anger,i was totally involved and touched by the music, is it about war or revolution, i could feel the swords and soldiers marching towards the battle feel, i could hear the groaning of the injured and outcrying of the dying, yet the inspiration of fighting growing from time to time. salute to liu fang, hope to see you performing live.
This is beautiful. I think that the next generation of great musicians are on the internet watching these videos and seeing the entire world and all its instruments. Hopefully the more exposure to music from around the world, the more original and crazy the music of the future will be!
I have listened to this a hundred and one times and it is so ,,,, so,,, magic, each time, such real quality. Words escape me on this description & comment, you need to weigh me for that. Thom in Scotland
Amazing play of the pipa, as a solo piece that bring out the best of the almighty string and with your skilful play, wow, it's real fantastic, my full respect to you for your stellar performance. It's force, courage, spiritual, anguish, joy, fear, hope all seamlessly fused beautifully into one piece of virtuoso play. Thank you.
Simply Extraordinary! What else can human body do?! She reaches the perfection! U know what? I think mashines will never be able to be that perfect and to give us emotions like that!
Thank you for posting this. Liu Fang's playing is fantastic. I thought of the beautiful poem by Bai Juyi "The Song of The Lute" in which he describes the sounds of a woman playing; thick strings spattered like a rain shower, thin strings whispered like lovers, big pearls and small pearls dropping into a jade plate. Skylarks chirping, a spring flowing under ice, silence, a crashing vase, splashing water, clashing swords, tearing silk. I will listen to this again and again
Wonderful! I think Pipa is the most versatile Chinese instrument. It can express such a wide range of emotions, from the most tender to the most violent.
I can't believe this vid has been around since 2006. I remember listening to this almost a decade ago when i was taking Chinese classes in high school. Just as good now as I remember it then.
I'm studying for the AP Comparative Politics test, and was planning to use this as background music, but ended up somewhat DISTRACTED by the amazing musicianship! I am truly in awe.
"House of Flying Daggers," the protagonist is Liu Bang who finally became the first King of Hang Dynasty, so the music is high, magnificent; while the protagonist of " The Conqueror Unarms " is Xiang Yu who had defected Liu Bong once, was eventually defeated by Liu Bong, so the music is seriously heavy and tragic.
Liu Fang you are so good from heart.... I've listened the same music from others... But your masterpiece really touch me right @ heart... One thing really amaze me with Chinese music is it has no boundary... from cool heaven to war.... I love every moment of this video... your performance is a plus... the way you express your emotion is quite true and beautiful... thanks you
Bravo. It is just awesome! The best performance of 'The conqueror undo his armor' I ever heard. Listening this make me feel so proud of our magnificent chinese heritage. For our western friends who are not familiar with the historical background. There is a similar story in the Iliad. Just imagine the battle of Troy. Visualize the glorious death of Hector, the final farewell between Hector and Andromache, the sorrow of the whole Troy after they lost their hero.
This is a Chinese traditional pipa music. It tells the story of the last battle between two kings (Xiang Yu 霸王 and Liu Bang) in 202 BC. 霸王 was the siege by Liu Bang. 霸王 tried to let his wife leave him before the final fight. But his wife committed suicide in front of him after danced for him. The next morning, 霸王 broke out of the encirclement, but Liu Bang's troops still followed him. He committing suicide by the Wu river. After the war, Liu Bang unified China and established the Han Dynasty.
and for me, Miss Liu seemed to fall in desperate love with pipa, just like Yuji did with Bawang. especially at that desperate night surrounded with Han soldiers. Her facial expression, the moving holding pipa tightly, the eyes closed just like being toxicated, so sensetive. how talented she is! bravassima!
Beautiful playing, it was bad-ass. That could be the world's first guitar and how we play the electric ones really fast here in America, history repeats itself.
The reason (in my experience) that good talent often goes on ignored is that they concentrate entirely on being actually good at their art, whereas the ones portrayed in the media often spend their time and resources on networking and advertising. Sadly, it seems to be not what you know, but rather who you know that will decide the future of your career.

thank you for wonderful perfomance.
