  • powerful playing, excellent musicality - dramatic and emotional: "The Ambush from all sides" (中国传统音乐经典琵琶名曲 《十面埋伏》), is undoubtedly the most famous pipa master piece from the Chinese traditional repertoire, performed by virtuoso soloist Liu Fang (劉芳)during a solo recital in the Pierre-Mercurre Hall of the Centre Pierre-Peladeau, on March 27, 2002, in Montreal, recorded by Mr. Zhou Fan of Montreal Multi-cultural TV, Chinese chanel.
Pipa is a Chinese traditional music instrument with over 2000 years of history. The "Ambush from ten side" is one of the most famous classical instrumental music of China.
With its highly virtuoso programmatic effects and tremendous power, this piece is regarded as the most representative of the "martial repertoire" of classical pipa solo. It describes the glorious victory of Liu Bang over Xiang Yu in 202 BC, the same theme as "The King doffs his Armour", however, from a totally different view point. There is no information about the composer, but some researches indicate that this piece might be dated back as early as the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-917AD).
    L'Embuscade (tradition classique) -

I remember back in 1974 when China sent over musicians to Canada and I watched it on national TV one evening, I was a studying student-teacher at that time and next morning the children talked about what they saw, and were impressed with music coming from "unknown" instruments, and I believe one of the performances included this music.

I find a friend says like this: "One thing I have noticed is that the movements and facial expressions are too exaggerated, a deviation from the traditional elegant movements that a traditional Chinese instrument performer will display"
I just want to clarify that actually Pipa's music has two kinds. First is the graceful and slow song which expresses the beauty of nature and people's exquisite emotion. This sort of music is always quite and elegant. The other one is always intense, performing with strength and exaggeration and mainly talks about the war, just like this piece of music. This is definitely Chinese traditional music. :-D

Thank you Selina for letting me know.
I'm a brit who knows nothing about Chinese music; I heard a busker playing a pipa in my town today and so this my first taste. It's beautiful!
I'm going to be spending a happy while exploring, so any background is interesting.

This is one of the most famous traditional piece. We don't know who conposed it, but one thing for sure: it is old than Bach, the father of western classical music. Some researchers think that it is originated from the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618 - 917 AD). This is just the martial style. There are other lyrical styles if you check other videos.

I'd take these ideas of older versus younger with a grain of salt. Remember all the nonsense about the 5,000-year-old culture of China, when there's no evidence of such until about 1250 BCE, roughly in line with the rise of Hinduism, early versions of the first works of the Western Biblical canon, etc. This is all just cultural propaganda that appears everywhere.
The East in general and China in particular have much culture of which to be understandably proud. Classical music compared with the West's, however, is not such strong ground.

@@TheScottEF It seems to me that you might have been influenced by eurocentricism, and you might be searching for defining characteristics of western classical musical in Chinese classical music. That would be very stupid. These two have fundamental differences, in what it values and what it pursues, and you were comparing apples to oranges when you said Chinese classical music, compare d to western classical music, is not such strong ground.
You simply lack the knowledge on Chinese music to understand its value and you lack the respect and curiousity that enables you to dive deeper on the subject. Just want you to be aware.

@@TheScottEF 3)hinduism: hindus mostly are vegetarians just like budhism. They try not to eat any kind of meat and believes in re-incarnation.but when you ask them who created this world and they won't have a clue. But again from this verse Romans 1:20‭-‬21 KJV For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.) We understood that all living things are created by GOD and if GOD wants us to be vegetarians ,why would HE create carnivors like lions and tigers that preys on other animals but still emphasis that we must not kill for food?before Adam sinned humans ate fruits but after sinned ,they start to eat meat. So the beliefs of hinduism doesn't lead you to the CREATOR because many lifeform need to survive on others as their food source so if the CREATOR emphasis so much on being a vegetarian ,why would HE create animals that depends on other animals as their only food source?

The music as a whole can be divided into three parts, consisting of thirteen paragraphs with subtitles, namely: Column Camp, Blow, Point General, Lineup, Line, Ambush, Jiming Mountain Battle, Jiulishan Battle, Xiang The king lost the battle, Wujiang squatted himself (Xiang the King), the enemy army played triumph, the enemy generals fought for merit and returned to the camp with victory. The story is based on the historical facts of the battle between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu Gaixia in 202 BC, and depicts the fierce war scenes in the form of title music. The Pipa Miss Liufang played was focus on Xiang the King at his last stage of his life and Miss liufang played the music with very strong emotion which beyond the meaning of the words.

Just amazing, I can't believe that there are 15 people who "disliked" the video.. that's crazy! If Liu Fang were ever to play in where I live, near Boston, I would certainly go to see her play. I have seen her play the Guzheng too and she is very adept at that instrument as well.

The latter is more melancholic.

The pipa in the early Tang Dynasty (618-917AD) was played with a plectrum, as the Japanese Biwa today. In the later Tang Dynasty some masters began to use fingernails and soon this has became the main streem till today (only Nan Guan pipa still uses plectrum). ====>>>

This song isn't MEANT to be boring and with a steady rhythm. It's called ambush from all sides. Like I said, it tells a story. It's meant to portray the chaos of an ambush. Close your eyes and pretend you're watching a scene from a film and the music will tell you a story.
I'm a white-hispanic American and even I can see this. I don't even know the context of the song, if it's inspired by a specific event, or anything like that.

This is an ancient piece with the theme of an epic moment of Chinese history: the last battle of founding of Han empire(the empire that gives the name of the Chinese majority Han ethnic). When the rival Noble Chu army and its King Xiangyu, once most powerful war hero in China was ambushed in all sides by the peasant formed Han army who are singing his Chu native songs(a signal that most of his fellow country men are no on the enemy side). He sang the farewell song to his lover and killed himself… and thus the birth of one of the greatest empire of China out of death of its hero enemy.

I've watched other pipa players, even masters, and the one thing that misses out is the "love" between them and the instrument. I love the way she holds it so close to her face and even closes her eyes at some points. Most other players usually have an impersonality to the way they hold it. Its more of a lover than an instrument to her ... at last thats how it looks from here :)

Chinese traditional music (classical styles like this) is basically an oral tradition from generation to generation (from masters to students) for hundreds and even thousand years, even before the music notations were invented. One needs a teacher even when there is a score, because not every thing can be noted. Musicians may develop their own styles, but the music note (the sound) has been the same from its creation, that is, played exactly in the way they were taught.

I'd take these ideas of "an oral [music] tradition ...for ... even thousand years" with a grain of salt. Remember all the nonsense about the 5,000-year-old culture of China, when there's no evidence of such until about 1250 BCE, roughly in line with the rise of Hinduism, early versions of the first works of the Western Biblical canon, etc. This is all just cultural propaganda that appears everywhere.

@@TheScottEF Even if it's hyperbolized often, that doesn't make it not old. Even by the estimate you gave, that still makes Chinese civilization about 3270 years old. As far as cultures go, that's not too shabby.

@@TheScottEF first i am a chinese. Yes chinese history is roughly as old or older than jewish history and has its roots dates back to the decendants of noah's ark.Just look at the chinese words and their meanings and you will understand . For alot of westerners that adopts chinese mysticism and hinduism or have experienced miracles let me tell you this ,they came from the power of satan and demons. The real truth was already been found and received by your forefathers and yet you westerners was startled by foreign culture and pagan practices . First let me summarized the lies that westerners like to embrace .1).Evolution :For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
      Romans 1:20‭-‬21 KJV .
GOD'S creation is clearly seen by HIS creation.Just look at all the creatures, nomatter how different their outlook, they still retain the same design concepts of two eyes which the Creator God gave them so that they could see and find food .

@@TheScottEF 2)buddhism : many have said that buddhism came earlier than Christianity and yes it did. But that doesn't mean it is the truth. Because if buddhism could save the soul ,JESUS won't need to be born of the virgin mary inorder to die for our sins right ?and there's no need for a Bible . You may asked ,who knows if JESUS is real ?If JESUS doesn't exist , why is HIS NAME so powerful and demons will flee when hearing HIS NAME?

The tremolo with five fingers is one of the very basic techniques from the time when the fingernails replaced the plectrum, that is to say, in the later Tang Dynasty. Your opinion about "browing guitar tremolo" is redicilous. You just need to learn little more about the history of both pipa and guitar, and watch videos closely to see the difference in their techniques: even the tremolos are performed in a opposite way.
