Bro! This is amazing. I learned a ton from all these tips. The re-harmonizing/re-pitching is genius. Anyone with a DAW that has audio to midi should be doing this!
Ive done this with Melodyne and accidentally came up with a cool new melody or harmony. I kind of forgot about using this as a tool until watching this. Great way to break out of common habits
Thanks Austin. I have never thought about "what do I want my melody to do?!" Typically I have written melodies and not ever thought about if they should be introspective, or explosive and what emotion I want to evoke with it. Also love how you said "less is more" in big melodies! Very helpful.
You’re so talented! Years ago I was thinking - someone needs to focus on crafting pop music in a structured way on UA-cam - then you came along and did it brilliantly!
Austin, you are a total legend. I rarely write a comment, but you’ve helped me out so much with your videos. One of your serum preset packs has already really helped me find some presets that have really advanced my song writing vibe. Thanks!
the first info is so crucial. I guess alot of people shy away from active listening. But definitely active listening helps giving you a direction to the thoughts on your head.
The tuning vocals tip is amazing! I always get stuck with the same type of vocal runs so this will definitely be a game changer for me. Keep up the fire stuff as always Austin!
WHenever i encounter your videos i get immediately inspired! Your room, the self consciousness in your workflow and your looks really make me motivated to continue
Great style and instincts. There is so much more guidance that the music can give to us if we know where to look: thirds, guide tones, target notes, harmony. The other chords in the progression have so much to tell us! Definitely keep up your studies
YES please! A video on active listening would be amazing! That's exactly the struggle I'm going through right now. Trying to figure out why I like what I like. And damn, it's not easy..
I've been watching your videos for a while now and I can already see a change in my thought process or my approach of producing a song. You explaining everything in detail is so amazing and I thank you for saving a lot of my money by teaching all of this for free. Cheers. Have a good day.
really great preface in this video. i hope people take it to heart. all of music gets better when we have more individuals. remember: this is art! and expression! love ya lots, king
Just listen to your podcast appearance on The six figure home studio, checked out your channel and man - this is what I was looking for! Thank you SO MUCH! I grew up with Rock/Metal but never wanted to to only this, this channel is real gold! You Rock!
Hi Mr. Austin. My name is Orrin Bynum. I just started to watch your videos for the last few weeks. I’ve enjoyed them very much. You are a very talented young man. I am very impressed with your musical works. I am a retired postal worker and a retired Choir/Director/Musician and I am 66 years old. I am working on my bucket list at the moment and I want to put a song out some time this year or next year. I am learning how to use Cubase Pro 11 and I am a little slow at it but very determined. I’m hoping that you can give me some advice. Will you please share with me how you make your vocals sound so professional and tell me what plug-ins you use to make your vocals sound so great. I have also noticed that you young guys use these Fabfilter Pro C2 and Fabfilter Pro Q3 plug-ins and I would like to get a third Fabfilter plug-in. So could you also recommend the 3rd Fabfilter plug-in for me to use as well? I want to have my music sounding wonderful just like yours. More that anything I really want my vocals to stand out very well. So please, please help me with your recommendations at your earliest convenience. One last thing. Could you also give me some pointers on what I can do to learn how to use those plug-ins for compression, EQ’s , saturation and reverbs. Any consideration given to request would be greatly appreciated. Oh, Please let me know that you have received this email. I am learning how to get better at using my MacBook Pro as well. My email address is (orrinbynum@gmail.com). Sent from my iPad
what would be cool is if you did a video on the science behind what makes a melody // sound memorable. sometimes i will write stems and little 8 bar loops and i will actually forget what it sounds like even though I've worked on it all day. i wonder if it has to do with the pitch and frequency, cuz i can remember a lot of the higher pitched melodies i write. i also wonder if there are certain timbres and qualities that stick in peoples minds.. but I'm really just trying to figure out what makes a song//sound//melody so memorable and addictive..
The rep itching was awesome. I had done it a few times accidentally and had played around with it for instrumentals, but not thought of applying it methodically! Thank you.
I've been putting of this video for weeks now. But, I'm glad I finally watched it! This is great info. Recently, I purchased the exclusive rights to a beat and have been trying a bunch of different singing styles & melodies over it. After one unsuccessful & expensive recording session I knew I had to change a few things. My friend gave it a listen & said it was too repetitive. He was right! I changed the verses from singing to rapping and sang during the hooks. We'll see how this 2nd expensive recording session goes! Thanks for the video
the try everything section is kind of what i do too.. with the piano. I like messing around with different flows. and keep it to 3-5 notes for the verse as well. And keep it to 3-5 notes for the verse as well. Simple choruses are often effective too!
Bro make a video explaining briefly about all the sub genres of pop like funk pop or trap pop or hyper pop etc. Give some examples of the artist of each sub genre. That would be a dope video and thank you for making my vocal melodies better : )
Quick tip, when you’re trying to write out your scale, write the letters in alphabetical order. When you played the F minor scale, you had a G natural and a G sharp. Letters never repeat. You also went from D sharp to F. Letters never get skipped either. F minor does not use sharps. It uses flats. F G Ab Bb C Db Eb.
Awesome video! When improvising the melodies, do you have the pitches of chord, or scale in your mind when choosing the notes? Do you feel how the pitches blend or clash with the track?
Sorry for being off topic, but I saw your video about funk/disco pop and I have a question. How did you make that bassline? Because I struggle to find a good funk/disco bassline with these octave pops :)
Reatune does pretty much the same. However IME, it somehow takes the power out of the notes that are processed with it. I personally like to use Melodyne to mess around with trying out alternative notes as well as doing general pitch corrections.
that technique is very nice ! so that editor in cubase keeps the key you set on it? is there anything similar on studio one? i try to sing on instrumentals but my music theary is not good and i just try humming but i dont know when i get off key this could work .
When I really like a composition, like less than 1%, I sit down and play it, in its original key. When I have got how it plays, I might change the key to something I like better. So I would not use that key-search function. The notes of each scale/key is however useful when I want to find what definition my own play is (my own comps).

That re-pitch method is insane, literally gold❤️😭🔥
Such a simple but underutilized tool!
@@MakePopMusic yess!! Thanks for this masterpiece method🙏🔥

Pretty much!
This is amazing thank you Austin!
active listening video +1 ;)
Did it!
Dude, you are freakin amazing i’ve learnt so much from your videos.. please do a ”How to make Country/Pop” video 🙏
Did I understand it correctly, you sing the notes which are in key of the beat right? Or can you also have some outliers?
First time watching your channel and I found i got a lot out of it. Subscribed.... cheers.
this was really helpful for literally any sort of music writing, not even just pop. I wonder how I could get that re pitch method on Reaper 🤔
Reatune does pretty much the same. However IME, it somehow takes the power out of the notes that are processed with it. I personally like to use Melodyne to mess around with trying out alternative notes as well as doing general pitch corrections.
That is an excellent melody
this video was so help fullll
that technique is very nice ! so that editor in cubase keeps the key you set on it? is there anything similar on studio one? i try to sing on instrumentals but my music theary is not good and i just try humming but i dont know when i get off key this could work .
Yes need a detailed video on active listening🔥
E major is the tone I like

Cubase!
