    On this episode of What The Wellness, Ella is trying a new metabolic device that some describe as having a “nutritionist in your pocket” called the Lumen. The Lumen analyzes your breath to determine how your body is using energy in order to create an optimal nutrition plan to use food as fuel. Watch to learn more about what it is, what it does, and if it’s something you might want to invest in. #lumen #metabolictracker #wellandgood

    Interesting concept, but Lumen doesn't measure your metabolism, it makes a (very) rough estimate of it. The device doesn't contain an O2 sensor, which is what is actually needed to assess the use of carbs + fat for energy (the ratio between CO2 and O2, that is). Instead they estimate the amount of O2 based on your breath flow rate and a reference data set. No-one actually knows how accurate this is because the company doesn't openly publish its research, and the paper that it does have (if you email them) is a summary of studies which is not peer-reviewed and very selectively chosen. Great sales and marketing though.

    Thank you for briefly reminding that weight loss isn’t the focus of metabolic health. However, there is no denial that the device is being marketed as a tool that can facilitate weight loss via fat burning. It is a dangerous mistake to perceive weight loss as a universal component of good health. “Healthy” means different things to different people depending on circumstance: if you are clinically underweight and malnourished, a diet geared toward fat burning is *not* going to be healthy for your body.
    As for perfectionists out there, please don’t obsess over the numbers. Regardless of what they define - metabolic flex score, weight, muscle mass, calories - numbers don’t and can’t determine a person’s success or worth. I find it more helpful to focus on intuitive eating and healthy habits than to rely on technology and meal plans that may distance us from our natural hunger signals. (Although, I do understand that hunger hormones may be thrown out of whack under certain circumstances, such as sleep deprivation.)
    Lastly, I would like to note that “flexible” is misspelled at 6:03.

    I just received my Lumen while 6 weeks into my Keto journey. I lost 30 pounds from 244 lbs and although at first I weighed all my food for my daily macro limits, I sort of been winging it. I was looking to get the Lumen for when I hit my target goal weight of 170 pounds (roughly another 45 pounds left to get there). The Lumen app is somewhat anti Keto and more mixed metabolism between fats and carbs. However, even though you don't have a means to select Keto as your current diet, Lumen figured out I was pretty much Keto and immediately began creating recipe ideas that are...pretty much Keto and within my realm of macro levels. I'm only on day 1, so should be interesting by the 4th week.

      @@rommy143I got Covid from my son and stopped using it as I didn't want to contaminate the device (no real way to clean the inside of the device) and I was also full on Keto. It is more intended for mixed metabolism. I lost the charging base as well which is proprietary. I'll resume once I get closer to my target weight. I started to mountain bike again with my sons so I had to add more carbs to my diet for energy. Lost 41 pounds so far in 3 to 4 months. I could see the Lumen being helpful,.but honestly it's common sense. If you know you're going on a 2 to 3 hour zone 3 type bike ride, you need carbs before your workout. Post workout I'll just go keto to reap the ongoing burn from the workout and to recover faster.

      And just think about it, we never had that many overweight and obese people, humans ate food, didn't track it, and managed to stay healthy and lean. Now, when most people are overly obsessed about calories, tracking everything, that's when we have the obesity epidemic. The solution here is to eat natural whole foods and forget about calories. We have a mechanism within our bodies that regulates hunger, satiety, and body weight. We mess it up only when we start eating processed foods full of sugar, refined carbs, and other harmful and addictive ingredients.

    I have Lumen and it is more for experiments than for loosing weight for me. What confuses me that I want to grow some more muscles and according to Lumen I will never see the difference between burning my carbs that I ate, or protein that I ate or glycogen which is stored in my body. So I suppose once I get to 3 or 2 I need to eat. I will continue to read more to be able to see how I can solve the problem.

    You indicate that it takes month about 4 weeks to get personal readings to better understand how your body is working. Lumens gives you only 14 days to return the item - wouldn't this defeat the purpose of what the item is supposed to help you do in reading ones metabolism data if you only have 14 days but actually need 4 weeks for good overall data? It seems the goal is to simply get the item the buyers hand rather than a person buying an item that is truly useful to them.

    I got stuck on the setup where you practice using Lumen. It said it was connected to my iPhone 11 Pro, but it wasn't measuring or giving me a result, so I possibly needed to charge it on the base before trying it out. It doesn't like Apple health either, since it connected, but it then asked me for my weight, height, date of birth, genda, which are all there in my Apple health data. #Fail. The app needs updating more regularly methinks.

    Interesting but I’m a bit confused by the product. I would want to use it to understand how to boost my metabolism and burn more fat since I’m over 40. I didn’t get a clear sense of how you would use this product to do that. It seemed confusing to me.

    • @jenbrocken3941
      @jenbrocken3941 3 роки тому +7

      The idea is that you follow a precise meal plan they set for you and test yourself before and after each meal. By fasting and varying your intake of fats and carbs you improve your "metabolic flexibility" over time. They also encourage you to do exercise, which also increases metabolic flexibility / reduces insulin resistance, but that's a no-brainer. Bear in mind you can "boost your metabolism" just by eating more food, that's not the same as being healthier. Eat less, move more, keep your carb intake moderate and sugar intake low. You don't need Lumen to tell you this.

    • @AdvancedNutritionandHealth
      @AdvancedNutritionandHealth 3 роки тому +1

      I think they give you advice on how to switch between different fuel sources and it's supposed to boost your metabolism, but I believe it's made for the younger generation that is not insulin resistant yet, and doesn't gain weight by eating carbs. By the age of 30-40, most people are insulin resistant, get stubborn fat that doesn't come off easily, especially if you keep eating carbs that cause you insulin resistance.

    • @lisedale6767
      @lisedale6767 Рік тому

      That's actually not a problem it seems counterintuitive but to boost your metabolism you generally need to eat more, not less. Otherwise your body just starts packing away what it can to get you through the famine. I don't know one person who has had sustained weight loss from carb restriction as a single goal. If you restrict carbs you must eat a lot more protein and fats. A friend of mine was astonished how much more food she was being asked to eat when she started weightwatchers, but she lost weight and kept it off. I am still in the fence about this device but so far its been very helpful to me in recognizing that I have been malnourished and giving me some of my old sustained energy back. For years I was on my feet 10 to 15 hours on most days and never ate much in the day. It makes sense that I'd want carbs, but since I wasn't eating enough, I had no reserves, and my muscles were becoming weak and I was tired all the time. It Also makes sense that over time I stopped being able to digest the fats very well, or sleep well, depriving myself of the healing effects of autophagy. We always think our body will just naturally take care of itself, but we forget that it always works with the situation it perceives us to be in, and if that is an ongoing stress response, it will work to keep us alive first, which is not necessarily healthy in the long run. When things get to that point, You have to intervene in sometimes counterintuitive ways to get back to homeostasis. I listened to my body tell me I shouldn't eat because I was under stress, which left me without reserves, which contributed to my stress... vicious cycle.
