Aug. 7, 2019 | Colin Marshall -- Moments before the first note at the Tiny Desk, David Crosby needed the mics rearranged: He asked that his microphone be positioned evenly with the rest of his bandmates, rather than in front of them, explaining that while his name is the one on the marquee, The Lighthouse Band has no hierarchy.
That band is an inter-generational ensemble, featuring Snarky Puppy bandleader and bassist Michael League, as well as guitarist Becca Stevens and keyboardist Michelle Willis, both accomplished singers and songwriters in their own right. They all first came together while the members were collaboratively writing and recording for Crosby's 2016 album Lighthouse. Everybody sings in this band, trading lead vocals for harmonies and vice-versa in just about every combination.
If you follow him on Twitter, you know that Crosby hasn't abandoned the political poetics that once helped buttress the movement in the '60s and '70s, referencing the shifting cultural sands with lines like, "It's time to turn the tide / Boys, sit back and let the other half drive." Connecting the present to the past, the quartet also brought along a rearrangement of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" from a version Crosby recorded almost 50 years ago with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young on Déjà Vu. (It's also the final track on The Lighthouse Band's 2018 album, Here If You Listen.)

David Crosby - he was stardust, he was golden, he was 81 years old carbon and today he went back to the garden. RIP David
That’s beautiful. Thanks for those words.
So fitting those lyrics! Bravo!
❤
Yeah that was beautiful, to echo LAB, lovely words Svend, brought tears to my eyes.
RIP David, miss you
Beautiful words!
I don't know what it was, but this man's voice could bring any group of voices together. Thanks awfully, David. For everything. We're going to miss you, brother.
Wow, it's fantastic to see Croz sing with three people who could have been his grandchildren. Incredibly gifted, everyone. Beautiful voices singing beautiful harmonies.
I'm happy I've found this. This, for me, is the proper good-bye to David Crosby.
Beyond the level of performance that David Crosby brings to this group at his age, I can't help but notice the affection shown among bandmates and the joy of the collaboration. That kind of gratitude and pleasure makes its way into every note.
He always mentors the up and coming stars
I noticed that also.
Honest about his own actions in life.and a very talented man. RIP david.
If i could only Remember my name
David Crosby lives to harmonize. I adore him his speaking is so youthful sounding. His singing voice is totally consistent. The band is so gentle...
The sound guy who did the mixing deserves a raise...
I raise my glass - cheers =)
I'm honestly pretty sure they get a whole bunch of money already. It's also funny that everyone who says this still just calls them "sound guy".
The sound on Tiny Desk is always impeccable.
@@Mojken_yakionigirilol... Im sorry I don't the name of the sound guy...
@@timcolorplay2543 Sound engineer, or mixing engineer, any combination. Also yeah you are right he did a really good mix. It could also be the way the musicians have pre-defined their amp/instrument equalization. So that they all sound crisp and clear and don't overlap and muddy each other.
RIP Mister Crosby ❤ Thank you, you gave so many, Love & Light. Continue singing please, the world needs it ❤💛🦋
Sing with the angels, David Crosby. You changed our lives. Tears are falling from our eyes tonight.
David Crosby always sounded young and got along well with young musicians. So sad he is not with us anymore. His passing away makes this Tiny Desk Concert a treasure to keep and enjoy.
Such a lovely and intimate concert, David’s voice is just so pure and his fellow band mates are the perfect foil. Today is such a sad day, RIP David xx
From Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, I always loved David Crosby the most. His songs are deeper and often darker than the songs of his (former) band mates. I mean, compare Guinnevere to Our House. He still has a great voice, and I love that he keeps writing songs that have unusual tunings just like now "What are their names". Oh, and he can also still rock. He also didn't only write the mysterious tunes, but also the most rocking tunes of CSN!
Maybe his mysterious sound comes from him loving the sea and spending much of his time on his boat. Songs like "Deja Vu" sound like the rolling of waves in the beginning.
David truly had an ethereal voice and his harmonies were insanely perfect. This is a beautiful collaboration. Rest easy, Croz. Infinite gratitude for the joy your music has brought to me and your countless fans over the years.
Don't know why this doesn't have up to a million views this is simply beautiful and magical.
At home- pandemic release-
Nowhere near as good as the original.
I never would have guessed Michael League to have such a pleasant singing voice. This was rad.
Jake Bermel He’s been singing on the current SP Immigrance tour, both with the opener Alina Engibaryan and some non-lyrical parts during the SP set. I was blown away when I saw them in STL. He was doing some great harmony parts with Alina.
Right? And he's the bass player with SP when he's such a great guitar player too! Such talent in this group, just wow!
He’s got an album called “So Many Me” You should definitely listen, amazing stuff.
When Becca sings on Woodstock ,Dave Crosby glances his eyes to her and it wouldn't surprise me if it took him back to the days Joni sang it. Absolutely beautiful.
RIP David Crosby. A TRUE artist. Not many left. Thank u for sharing your gift and talent. Rest easy
Came here after hearing the sad news, thank you David for the years of music that has changed so many peoples lives. Your love will always shine through your music.
This is one of my favorite Tiny Desk concerts. RIP David Crosby.
Dame David Crosby will never lose his voice. Fantastic. I also love a 70 year old man singing with the younger generation. These people get it.
Closer to80!
So glad some of the 'youngins' do!
He still has that angelic voice!
DC? You're joking right?
@@schwietzpelican what's the joke?
I love This. Can't believe David is 80. Still making beautiful moving powerful music.
Wow, Crosby's voice is still golden. Beautiful. How fortunate
This is my little way of saying thank you from my heart for your likes and comments on my personal and fan pages.
I and my management are saying a big thank you. Much love from me to you and your family.
We Appreciate All Of It.
The quality of David Crosby's voice hasn't diminished at all! Michael League continues to surprise me, now with his singing talent! Thanks so much for sharing!
Im remembering these songs must go back a bit the 2nd decade feels very contrite.
He had some trouble reaching some of higher notes -- pretty much par for the course considering his age and the mileage on his larynx and lungs -- but his gorgeous timbre is completely intact and instantly recognizable.
LOVED THIS!!!! David C is going to keep singing until he can’t...this world needs his wisdom and passion. I’ve been sitting at his feet since the 70’s. Much love to him and the younger musicians lending him their voices.
1968! Woodstock???
He's always been a mentor
This is still my favorite Tiny Desk performance, and today, I am back to celebrate the music of David Crosby. Thanks for the music, sir.
The years have passed and yet it seems time stands still , he sounds great all these years later very nice
That's what you call chemistry! Gotta give it to Cros for still having a feel for it and keeping it fresh in his second life. Great to see, hear and feel!
we need David... we can't loose him
Absolutely fantastic! I can’t believe how great the harmonies sound. The Band and the Sound Technician are great! Stay alive Dave Crosby.
I appreciate how croz is continuing to evolve and create while still acknowledging his past. he has a lot of respect from me. also he must love that hat, he never takes it off
julia lee his wife made it 😀
Boomer Tunes so sweet!
David's voice stills sharpy. A real piece of gold
Yes exactly!
He is awesome- you're right! He just hears harmony without having to do anything! Great comment!!
R.I.P David Crosby.
I'll always come back here to remember and immortalize your legacy.
Man I saw that man sing at Glastonbury festival ... something inside of me just ....I don't know but ...it touched me in a way music has never touched me
.......just take a minute to think about his life and career ....pick a old great musision he probably sang with them ....and is still here to tell the tail .... Elvis ..the beetles ..Janis Joplin ..man it still blows me away ...and so does he ...
Thank you
This man will truly be missed, he made Beautiful music 🎶 ❤️
Crosby still has his beautiful voice. He should thank God everyday for that gift because no matter how old his skin gets that voice of his is still 20 years old. That band of his is top notch. I'd definitely come to one of their concerts when they visit my area. Quite a surprise the songs were so good.
He does thank God for everything he's been blessed with..
Becca Stevens has been busy, performing with the legend that is David Crosby here, and only weeks earlier appearing alongside the magnificent Jacob Collier. My respect for her musical talents grows more each day!
And she's one of the best songwriter out there. I've seen her when she came in Milano, great intimate show with a small audience.
She's been my favourite artist for a while now ... but I'm still unable to count "Be Still" :D
I first discovered her from the Snarky Family Dinner vol 2, seems like a lot of these different colabs came out of that and I'm loving it.
Yep, her album 'Regina' is incredible
She is AWESOME.
Sept 28 - Becca was on Live From Here with Chris Thile. Check it out on UA-cam
Thank you for you music mr Crosby. I'll see you in heaven. Rest in peace
Amazing! You can hear his style in the new stuff. Great to have such fine young musicians playing with a timeless legend. Bravo.
Becca Stevens, Michelle Willis and Michael League, the three musicians known as The Lighthouse Band, who Mr. Crosby been working with since 2016's Lighthouse album.
RIP sir. ❤️
Thank you
*eyes and ears blessed by clicking on this vid*
Soul cleansing experience.. God, I love Crosby.
David Crosby was truly blessed with a wonderful singing voice. Love this combination. Great video. Joni Mitchell's tune "Woodstock" is a timeless gem.
Prophetic voice who radiated love and truth till the end.
They remind me somewhat of the beyond category Pentangle, one of the finest groups of the late '60's-early '70's. Thrilled to find David still sounding so wonderful -- and committed. Extraordinary music.
I love this lighthouse band. Michael, Becca & Michelle = ( so talented ) and keeping the Croz-tradition of great vocal harmonies. I hope they make another album. oNe LovE from NYC
Their version of "Woodstock" is magical.
Just perfect. I've never seen David so happy and awesome. Love this!!! Glasper is so good too. ❤️
*David Crosby* ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Those vocal harmonies are stunning, like a cross between the Eagles and the mysterious Bulgarian Voices. Amazing!
Oh, this is such a brilliant and touching collaboration! David Crosby, such a giant of our creative and social era, leads the way unto his final breath for younger people across the world. Sing Sing Sing us unto The Garden! So So Beautiful! Thank you all so very much! I shall come back to this often!
What to say : perfect, magic, timeless. Thank you to all those great artists .
Awwwwww man, the accuracy of those harmonies was so pleasing. This is the highest quality of musicianship.
Blessings to David Crosby. May you keep singing in the afterlife. Thanks to the band and their sensitive music making.
Nothing like getting chills listening to Woodstock. The end of an era is near, but the Snarky Puppy "preservation hall" will keep this torch burning.
Becca Stevens backs Jacob Collier and now David Crosby? Sidewoman of the century award
Jacob Collier should be backing her. She's the one to watch.
Bet u she’d do better in a kitchen
I have not heard this wizard for a long time. And how many ideas behind The Lighthouse! I am grateful for this music, therefore respect, depth and work.
I'm grateful too. Isn't it awesome 4 part harmony
🙂
@@monikat6535 That's how it is. In principle, he maintains the aesthetic of Mr. Crosby, always fabulous and made of temporary slits. Then, (I don't know who wrote the choral parts) each and every one contributes their incredible musicality.
All beautiful. Got chocked up on Woodstock. A tear in my eye. Harmonious 4 part! We love Joni. Everywhere was a song and celebration. Life is for learning.
You all sound awesome. David I didn’t expect you to still sound like you always did, a truly great singer! Your era in the Byrd’s still is among my favorite music. I’m 57, my oldest brother 70 steered me to you guys. That was about 1977. Time shows who really is great.
Keep in mind that David's health has suffered greatly and unfortunately... This may be one of his last stripped down performances we may ever see.
We should be fortunate to lived in the age of such a stalwart of Folk Rock, who brought several generations together.
David Crosby is a legend, and he will always be remembered. He said he's just lucky to be alive. No David, we're the lucky ones, to see you shine bright and evergreen. Even now.... He sounds as heartwarming as ever
long may he run....
@@leeandbeahinton dont think neil would say that yo him these days
Meh...
@@sammyscotch9945 of course he would.
They are brothers. Brothers fight. But they love each other. They always will.
Uncle Neil, he's always heartbroken. He loves CSN
Yes but he's happy. You can see that when he mentors. Makes a world of difference
I recently discovered that Snarky Puppy and Crosby are a thing and I've been very happy ever since
What a way to start the morning! The best voice from C,S,N,&Y performs on Tiny Desk!
RIP DAVID CROSBY. ABSOLUTE LEGEND. YOU WILL BE MISSED.
It's 5:00 Sat morning and I found this what beautiful harmonies.. David Crosby influenced..I just want too say thank you for music
I think I never heard a better 'Woodstock' live performance. Sublime.
Really enjoyable - nostalgic but with a contemporary vibe . Dare I say that this all-star lineup is (are?) not only as talented as their predecessors (including Stills, Nash and sometimes Young) but perhaps more so - but having one original member keeps it 'anchored' so to speak. One has only to listen to Becca Stevens, or Snarky Puppy, or Michelle Willis performing in their own bands to realise that these guys are the cream of the cream, exceptionally talented musicians, songwriters and composers. The respect and liking they all have for each other shines through, making this a must-see band for anyone who loves tasteful music.
Effing brilliant. Still Crosby after all these years.
Love your voice old man.
This is a musical gem right here. Very subtle and beautiful details in arrangements. Wonderful dynamics and backing vocals, just loved it!
What a musician David was... We still have his music.
I’m late to the David Crosby party, but damn can he still sing!!
Thank you! All such talented! David Crosby - what a legend. :-)) Love from Prague, Czech Rep., Europe
Happy tears! It lifts my heart to see these beautiful young musicians join with Dave, and carry on the torch to light the path. Love from an actual Woodstock attendee, Auntie Jill 💓🙏🌸😄✌️
This is spectacular! Croz making the best music of his career and the awesome Lighthouse band is super talented! I'm SO glad he finally did Tiny Desk!!
Look in their eyes. Magical. Awesome harmonies/harmonics. Amazing David can still sing like this. Miracle!
Tremendous stuff... Crosby never fails to impress and The Lighthouse Band is just incredible.
quelle grande tristesse....c’était une voix tellement belle...belle vie à toi Crosby au paradis des hippies ..🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
David Crosby is a treasure
thank you NPR. Crosby voice stands the test of time.
My favourite Tiny Desk concert. I love their voices and musicanship, combined with Croz. 'Other half rules' I just love, and I suspect would be very difficult for most musicans to play live, complex arrangement, brilliantly done.
Said it with Jacob Collier, I'll say it here. Becca Stevens needs her own Tiny Desk Concert.
Agreed a million times
big time!
So does MARO.
Who, besides Becca, is even on two different ones?
@@ianalderman9304 thundercat (also on mac miller), robert glasper (also on august greene), h.e.r. (also on daniel caesar's)
all 6 dope concerts just like this one!!
Je ne comprends pas un mot de la langue anglaise mais lorsque j'entends la voix, le timbre et l'intention de musical de David je comprends tout ... J'adore aussi Michael, Becca et Michelle ... Merci pour tout :)
Yes
Mr. Crosby did the pure beauty - brings me to tears - LOVE >>>
🎹🎸🎺🎷🎻🎹 MUSIC, selfmade MUSIC and on TOP David CROSBY and brilliant young Musicans around him🎹 THANK YOU 4 the MUSIC🎸🎺🎷🎻🎹
Thank-you for staying true, David C! While many of our generation(s), I came up in the 70s but always identified with the 60s, too... While many of this era lament the error of their ways, some of us, in smaller numbers were and still are true to the intentions of our shared legacy! We'll always have wisdom to share and to keep learning. ❤️
Pure music
I needed that
Thanks npr
Oh thank you what a delite to find as I mourn the loss of a great singer songwriter.... David Crosby. Wow. Cherie Jtown NC
I love the fact that David hasn't rested on his legacy and has created all this new music with talented young musicians. I have bought all of his solo albums going back to Croz (plus one of my timeless favorites, If I Could Only Remember My Name). And somehow his voice has withstood the test of time.
I have a strong feeling that I’ll be coming back to listen to this regularly
Class... I think this will be cherished in years to come. Thanks for doing this, very special.
You can tell he's so passionate about the message behind his music. It honestly makes me really emotional :')
Thanks for your creativity and more than half a century of good songs, helping fellow musicians and your work in so many bands; Dave and his talents have gone to another place. RIP
Great harmony. I think David wanted this so he asked for mic rearrangement. I liked each member ‘s face, so classy due to their musicianship. And of course I was totally awed by Woodstock.
Woodstock = ditto.
Yes- 50+ years ago- THANK YOU
It's hard not to like this. The melodies are so well written
👍
Goodbye, David. Thank you for everything.
Wow....they rocked it and rocked it again. Gorgeous and very current!
This should be in the National Archive.
This is fabulous. Maybe the only thing missing is one of David's Martins tuned to the strange tuning he used.
We will miss you Mr Crosby...
Credit to the band here as well.
Magic thanks 😊 🎸
Why hasn’t anyone mentioned Michelle Willis on Piano and voice? She is also amazing with the other three who I love equally!
Everyone in the world is equally the same
she's phenominal for sure, creates a great environment for the entire group to exist in
