    I get the P0420 & P0430 codes and I can clear them ok. But once the ute is driven for say 50 klm the engine light comes back on again and sure enough the same code is present. This ute does alot of sitting around in a garage which I know is no good for it.
    So if it was a vacuum leak or sucking air in would the engine light come on virtually straight away?

    Hey amigo this should work on p0420 code? It's related? And good info....

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  6 років тому

      Well po420 is mainly a bad cat converter. You really need to get a cheap temp gun and measure the inlet and out let temp of the converter. po430 is usually a intake gasket. But all these things could vary.

      @@FixingWithPassion I respectfully disagree with this statement. P0420/30 is exactly the same thing. The only difference lies in the location of the cat. Indeed, p0420 is bank 1 (passenger side) and p0430 is the cat located on the driver side. Thats all.

    People don't replace the catalytic converter or oxygen sensors!!!!!! Check for leaks first:
    1- Intake gaskets.
    2-Vacuum leaks.
    3-Just do some research and you might save a lot of money.
    Most Mechanics don't understand this.....and they don't care. They just care about getting paid!!!

      for some technicians it is all they know or all they have grown to know.
      you should be very proud you fix one car correctly, some of us hard working technicians only get the cars the others can't fix. since this vehicle has many problems.... maybe you should be more humble, because there will be that one you cannot fix. let me know if you need my address when you are stumped.

    If those people do a proper diagnosis they wouldn’t be just throwing parts. It’s a fairly common issue with the plastic intakes. If a mechanic is just taking your money by doing bad diagnosis then why keep going to that mechanic. Thank you for this video.

  • @closs4210

    I always tell my customer to check for vacuum leaks,misfire, purge valve solenoid staying open causing lean code, worn spark plugs or thermostat staying open causing rich condition. Instead of them taking it to a "mechanic" pulling the code po430 & asuming its a bad cat and 02 sensor and having them change it, which in NOT CHEAP!! & later find out that it didnt help or the code went away for a while and came back. & start blaming the parts being faulty. But in reality if they checked & properly diagnosing it in the first place it could've been a 80cent vacuum hose broken or a simply pcv valve. Instead of spending $300 to $1000

    I think you might be dead on with this. I recently changed my spark plugs and wires and my car was suddenly giving me a p0430 (inefficient cat below threshold bank 2) and my fuel economy dropped. I checked the CAT for signs of damage or overheating, tapped it with a hammer and it was showing no symptoms. I then took my intake manifold, throttle body, IAC and EGR off and gave them all a thorough cleaning (especially the back of the throttle body, ensuring it moved freely). I made sure to put everything back on tight but not too tight (to avoid cracking the plastic). The error code disappeared and never returned.Not only that but my mileage increased to a better efficiency then it was before. I think I may have loosened the intake manifold when I replaced the plugs because my TB and IAC weren't even that dirty. And maybe the EGR cleaning helped with exhaust efficiency?? I don't really know but my car's golden now!

    • @kenguitar24
      @kenguitar24 8 років тому +1

      I had the same exact issue (I changed the plugs and wires and coils on my Jeep Commander, and all of a sudden I'm getting the P0430 code). Non-mechanic here, so my question is what are the IAC and EGR? And thanks for the tips, I'll be removing/cleaning/reinstalling as you mentioned. Hopefully that will clear my code.

    • @creamedcorncripple3764
      @creamedcorncripple3764 8 років тому +2

      IAC=Idle air control (you should be able to access this fairly easy, top of engine, one of the air intake components) and EGR=Exhaust gas recirculation unit or valve. Get some carb cleaner or brake cleaner handy and just google the specific location of these components for your make and model. Clean your throttle body and MAF (mass air flow sensor) while your in there. Screw in everything tight but try not to crack any plastic parts of your air intake system and ensure hoses are snug.

    I got the code today, and decided to research it first, and found your video. 457 dollars to replace the y pipe with converters, or 120 something for one (not shop price). My light came on while in the car wash in my 07 Silverado, so I knew it had to be water related. I sprayed around the intake and inspected the exhaust with no luck. I decided I had nothing to lose, so I tightened the intake bolts, and cleared the codes. Drove it around and still no light or code! Ill be doing intake gaskets this weekend, thanks!

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  6 років тому +1

      @@FixingWithPassion you do know most cars over 8 years old are worse than most cars before catalytic converters were made? The reduction in performance of the cat increases fuel consumption and the cycle continues as most people only replace that emmision junk when it causes drivability issues. They also waste a lot of materials like platinum and steel so there is more emissions from production and mining so they really cause more damage then they help.

    If you suddenly have codes popping up, ask yourself this. "Has my battery gone completely dead recently or did I change the battery myself" If yes, drive your car through the manufacturer specific, driving recycling procedure to re-boot your computer. A lot of things can be fixed by just idling from a cold start for a few minutes while turning on every electricity item in the car. AC, rear defroster, radio, lights, etc.

    Great video - very informative! I've got a '99 Mercury Grand Marquis with a P0430 code. The engine light was on for a few days, then disappeared for about two or three months, then back again for a week, now off again. The car just passed the emissions test, recently, and when you turn it on and look under the hood, everything seems to be running normal, BUT, as soon as you put it into drive with your foot on the brake, you can feel an intermittent jerking. While driving, not so much, but at the red lights, yes. So, the question is...if it were the problem that you're describing, would the car still jerk a bit? Also, how much do you estimate it would cost a typical mechanic to fix the part in your video, if it turns out to be that? Thanks so much - I just subscribed to your channel!

    Wow! I was just reading through some of the comments and came across the one where you mentioned that the P0430 code was pending after you replaced the intake manifold. I'm not saying that your vehicle didn't need the intake manifold, but in my opinion you jumped the gun posting this video and have probably misled many people. As a professional mechanic for over 30 years I find these types of videos to be both sad and funny at the same time. Keep throwing parts at your vehicle and talking shit about people you have never met before.... Lol. Oh yeah, maybe you should delete this video as the title is absolutely incorrect. @@FixingWithPassion so by fixing the problem you mean that the returning P0430 code is not what you wanted to fix in the first place? I'm not out to get you or talk shit, but if you aren't interested in telling the truth then perhaps you can elaborate on what your original goal was. If you were trying to eliminate the bank 2 catalyst efficiency below threshold malfunction, then my opinion is that replacing the intake manifold did not completely solve the problem. It could have been an underlying issue that contributed to the P0430 code being set, but if you have 48 years of experience as a mechanic, you would have seen the lean condition in the datastream. There are these things called PID's. One of them is known as LTFT (Long Term Fuel Trim). It is important to look at that before condemning any part, especially the catalytic converter. However, I'm sure that you already knew that, with your infinite wisdom. All I can say is that the thousands of vehicles I have successfully diagnosed and repaired in my career have typically set lean fuel mixture codes long before any catalyst code. Perhaps your vehicle is not the norm.

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  3 роки тому +4

      @@user-gj4ei6dc5q That's right, the P0430 code will trash the cat eventually giving a P0420 if you know what to look for. Trying to keep people form spending thousands of $$ on catalytic converters is my goal. If there is a P0430 then look at different things, not the cat first. Trims, loose hoses, injectors seals Even a leaky fuel pump etc. But you know this. When you see a p0420 code...your cats are usually trashed. P0430 codes are the crack in the bridge before the entire thing goes down. -Have a nice day.

      Again, I'm not trying to make you look bad, but please admit when you may have made a mistake. If you want to mislead people with nonsense, that's not a good thing. If you want to talk about facts, I'm more than capable of disputing your previous response. My opinion is that you owe it to yourself and your viewers to admit that there is some potentially misleading information in your video. You can post your opinion about any topic you want, and so can others.I have never met you in person and have no reason to discredit your misunderstanding of logic other than the obvious illogical conclusion you are trying to present.
