After all these years he's still as charismatic as ever. Loved watching his show back in those days. He made cooking seem so easy and fun. He's always been a Canadian TV icon to me.
Love this show. It's about 40 yrs ago, I remember sitting by the television with my grandmother watching all the episodes. My grandmother is 98 yrs old, deaf and barely can see now. This really brings me back to some happy days with her.
Martin was based in the Bay area and known for his incredible meat cleaver skills but Stephen's show was more entertaining (mom's favourite tv chef) and his dishes always looked appetizing.
@@loloioi the master and his disciple. Martin had ninja knife skills but Stephen was a master chef who could turn any dish into a culinary delight. Masterful tag team. Both are comics too. Always kept their audiences entertained. Wok the heck! 😁

OMG thank you for guesting Chef Yan !! He started my love for cooking and love for Chinese food. I grew up in the Philippines watching his show. Brought back so many memories od me and my late Mom who adored his show. Im so glad to see him healthy and still happy ❤❤❤
He’s why I tried to wok raisins for breakfast when I was 3! I got up before mom and wanted to surprise her with breakfast. I wanted to make her something fancier than cereal and raisins were there. We had an electric wok, so I brought it into my room, plugged it in, cranked it up, and started to wok the raisins. I pretended I was Woking with Yan. Mom woke up and freaked out. She thanked me for trying, but explained how I could burn the house down and the wok wasn’t a toy 😂. He’s still a really cool dude!! 💕
This man inspired me to cook. Was always happy watching this guy cook on the CBC channel when I was 4 years old with my grandmother. He was always funny and made simple dishes to his audience. Very humble guy.
I moved to upstate New York in 1983. We had one TV channel from Kingston, ON (CKWS-13) and, that first summer, sure enough, Stephen Yan caught my interest and I was hooked (NOTE: a 14 year old teen-age boy, mind you!). His show helped me become an excellent Chinese chef who has been wokking it up since the late 1980s for myself, my family and friends; all who sincerely compliment me afterwards. I tell them to thank "Wok With Yan!"
My mother and I remember his show very well. Loved his cooking very much. I've been professionally cooking Chinese at home for 8 years. I've shared my cookings with family and friends. I even showed pictures of my cooking to Chinese restaurant and Chinese grocery store staffs and they were stunned of what they are seeing. I would like to thank Yan and all retired chefs for the "wok"-ing skills they have given me. Wok around the world.
Wow, this really takes me back to school, watching this lively man cook amazing food! He was such a huge part of my elementary school/high school TV regimen! "Hot wok, cold oil, food won't stick" is something I still go by when cooking. I CAN'T BELIEVE HES 85!!?? My goodness, he looks so young!
Our family loved watching Wok With Yan back in the 80s to the early 90s. This is an nostalgia overload. I'm glad that Mr. Stephen Yan is still with us. ❤❤❤
His show Wok with Yan aired in the Philippines (RPN9) every weekend night and many families learned his style of cooking. His show is a 90s gem. Before cooking vloggers, there is Wok with Yan 😉
Growing up, if I was home from school because I was sick, I'd watch Price is Right, and Wok with Yan. My dad would sometimes watch it with me. He used to get a big kick out of it.
Like many of you, also a big part of my childhood. Always enjoyed watching him and teaching us how to cook. Super nostalgic and will always respect him. Thank you Mr. Yan for being apart of my life.
This man was the man who made me wonder what true Chinese food is all about, and his comedy antics and joyful persona made his show, and as a kid , I enjoyed it more than cartoons.
l love watching Wok with Yan when I was in high school, that's where I learned simple and easy Chinese cooking style. Totally THANKFUL for this show. And then there was also the show called East Meets West, it was another Chinese cooking show with a different approach. Awesome/ Happy memories...
Wok with Yan restaurant is now Yan's Garden, serving great dim sum and Chinese dishes. Eat there 2-3 times a month. Reminds me of my youth watching his show. BTW, I am a great cook (as described by friends and family) and he was a fantastic inspiration. The kitchen is my favourite room in the house. Thank you Stephen. Do you have your aprons in XXL?
Wow! The GOAT of cooking shows when I was a kid. I had wondered what happened to Mr. Yan. I am glad that he is alive and well. There was a time where his whereabouts were unknown.
we only had two channels and I so looked forward to watching his shows plus taught me a lot about cooking just a great man, amazing cook plus he is funny
Wow, I can't believe Stephen Yan has been very quiet and shows up, he should meet Uncle Roger. He met Martin Yan, an OG Uncle, Stephen Yan is another OG Uncle with wok puns. And I love both of their cooking shows.
Pioneered and did it for the common everyday home cooks👍 But really as an elementary kid, it was just entertaining to watch.. ya know, 'happy'! while you waited for the Price Is Right to come on ;p He also had his restaurant out in Burnaby BC on lougheed hwy and n.road - but in those much earlier years chinese cuisine places didnt carry the same notoriety and identity as today though he did promo it in the end credits. There's a Yan's Garden潮樓 now same spot but likely off his hands now unrelated. Interestingly Martin and Stephen are not related- and a cause for some confusion at times: yan can cook vs. wok with yan ! later found that Martin Yan had trained and worked for Stephen Yan briefly in the 70s. then some collaboration in 80s.
I grew up watching his show and verry fun and entertaining bring back my childhood memories in the Philippines . Im glad this is the first time i saw him again still strong and funny!!
I agree, in the industry you need happy people working there positions, if someone is bad or unhappy it will show in there food/dishes/service. Yan need to come to Victoria.
Wow.... This is my mom most favorite cooking show we watched it in Malaysia somewhere 1986 like that (sorry that time I was 5yrs old). Because of this show, I also have the passion in cooking.
Boy I ain't believing this! Been calling myself the 'Alabama Wokster' for 40 years and I had NO competition...until this morning when by chance a girl at the office told me she resurrected a wok from her deceased granny's house. One like mine.... the official Wok With Yan hand hammered (ha ha) steel wok. Wow!!! Stephen taught me everything I know...and I still have his cookbooks around somewhere. I love to cook poks (pork) in that thing. Mebbe mostly so I can imitate Stephen's way of saying things? And the magic powder....and oyster flavored sauce... Wow!! Woulda never believed he is still around. GREAT vid find! UPVOTE!
the is so beautiful too see, glad too know hes doing well.. great work chef, your combination dishes were always flavorful, and his off the cuff commentary was always great.
in the mid 80s my dad new him and called him up and Stephen called us up to his place and I was pretty young but he had a beautiful place and we had the honor of Stephen cooking for us
This is back when CTV had good TV Shows, not the garbage they peddle these days. WOK WITH YAN and ENG were two of the greats. Best apron, "Wok, don't Run!" He should start selling the aprons, I'd buy some.
This is a man who deserves Canada Walk of Fame. But they should rename it for one day Canada WOK of Fame.
Stephen popularized the puns on his apron 😅
@TomGeek1980 i see what you did there!
Silly wabbit, u mean Wok of Fame
LOL The one at 8:10, the only one not smiling when he says he's still alive. Spooky
