I think the biggest benefit by far to adding WiFi for our purposes is to be able to just browse over the network and drop roms/bios from a local PC. It makes life so much easier on my Pi3
Right. But I was more pointing out that without the wireless you'd have to use USB, take out the SD card, or something to copy files/roms to an older Pi Zero. With the WiFi on the Zero-W you can just drop them across the network from your PC. The reference to my Pi3 is that it, also having WiFi and not being tethered by an ethernet cable, is convenient for the same reasons.
when i first got mine, i used a 4 gig USB drive to move rom's on to the pi. for some reason with absolutely no setup on my part my retropie just shows up in my Windows 7 laptop network'ed pc's. i do agree that built in WiFi is indeed a plus.
I just picked up a Pi Zero W yesterday, I didn't realize the standard RetroPie for Pi Zero image wouldn't work, but I got it working beautifully on top of a standard Raspbian image using the scripted install. This will pair quite nicely with an 8bitdo Bluetooth controller.
I have been eyeing the Zero W lately. I really want to take one of the Game Gear shells I have laying around and make a handheld portable. The Zero is perfect for it and now that it has wifi, that is one less thing to try and cram into it.
Great video, the default video is of course pushing out 1080p, does it make any sense to for it to 720p or something a little lower (720 x 480) does 1080 put that more strain on the Pi than 720 is what I'm really asking?
So im noticing lesser performance on the pi 0 w using retropie 4.2+ any way you can either do a comparison video or put the 4.1 image back up so we can try it and see on a different SD card. thank you
hi ETA PRIME, im just getting into the pie, and just wanted to ask will the zero w play mame games ok.. i only want to play the most common games like Defender, Pacman,Galagam, Burgertime as i want to make dedicated mini cabinets. I make ones with stripped out Dell optiplex`s but would like to see how the small pie computers can cope. Thanks :)
When I fresh install retropie, it crashes right before I can set any keybinds to any controller I use. And it says emulation station has crashed, if this is your first boot make sure your mem-split is as high as is needed, which I have it as high as it can go right now. Then it wont let me do anything else, it just freezes up
I tried using a couple keyboards (Hold A) to config the Zero W. Nothing. Only on the zero W. I go back to the regular zero and voila. My 1st time using a W. May go back to the regular zero
Hey Prime, im trying to install retropie on a rbpi zero w, on a GPI case…everything seems to load fine, until I get to the load screen that says ‘illegal instruction’ and provides date, memory, temp, etc……then it ‘FAILS’ …and idea what I’m doing wrong? I’ve flashed 3 times, with correct flashing. 🤷🏼♂️ Any help is appreciated.
Any configuration suggestions for using a Genesis USB pad? They don't have a select button, so I was wondering if there's an alternative that doesn't mean losing a button (e.g. multiple button presses to emulate simultaneous select and start.)
Okay, i typically don't comment on videos because they usually are self explained. However, I am have issues getting the roms to load after transferring them via wifi. I do not see the SNES, NES or MegaDrive emulators. I installed the os for Pi Zero W as suggested. am i just missing the bios?
eta prime iam in a jam I have built a pi zero w nes cartridge but have gone down the otg hub route instead of usb hub I booted it up but in the emulate station it says no gamepads detected. now the pads I got are some knock of snes pads I know they work as I tried them in my tablet with otg hub on a emulator on my tablet please help it's really bugging me cheers and top vids
hi!, nice video. can I use an HDMI to VGA converter? how can I do that? I was trying to make it works with my pi zero w and a converter on recalbox 4.1 and 6.0 and it looses HDMI signal every minute. it's really annoying. thank's for your help.
DUDE...... dude.... work so great... wow.... i had a 5go zip folder with 6666 roms lol and fit great lol.... but i will have to use N64 and up on my raspberry pi 3 cause like you said the CPU on the zeroW is not that strong. and is it the same retropie setup for the Pi3 or you have an other video? thank you
Installing on the Pi3 is pretty much exactly the same yeh. only main difference is that you need the Retropie image for Pi3 (the one for pi zero is a different image). N64 has its ups and downs on pi3. dont expect all games to run 100% speed. Mario 64 runs decently... but goldeneye runs terribly. PS1 and PSP games run really nice on pi3 though.
Atomizer Zero I got a n64 it's ok for beer mariokart lol. And I checked eta prime video about setup a Bluetooth remote... now even with a cable it work badly or not at all... idk what I messed up... I bought2 nes30 pro ... I need to find other video :-(
I followed every instruction but i cant manage to make my Raspeberry to boot up the Retropie. i downloaded the new Retropie Zero from the link and it was a successful flash on the SD. only i saw is it saying that the file is not bootable then i just continue anyway. then success. but as i said its not booting up the Raspberry. hope you could help me.
a PSP may work flawlessly on your pi zero using a male mini b to male micro b USB cable, would be AWESOME 😀 I do not think GBA would work well, even on my pi 3 playing Final fantasy V advance my CPU throtles because of themperature even on a clear case with vents, because of that I ordered a heatsink over GearBest
So question I can't access my pi zero w over wifi.. any suggestions??? Port 22. Pi raspberry user pw, both on same network even on terminal It says pi reset connection. I'm stuck And never had any problems on any other pi
I can not get my pi zero to power up with sd card I flashed with retropie 4.2 on Samsung 16gb card. it will power up with another card I got from a canakit preloaded with noobs. Any thought to help me. thanks for your videos.
I am having a freezing issue with my Raspberry Pi Zero W and Retropie 4.2. This will occur in a few minutes on the menu. Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone found a solution for the issue? I've tried a lot of different solutions, none have worked. I'm ready to give up and go back to the regular Zero.
Great video bud. I don't understand why I am not greeted with the emulation station screen after booting up and writing the image on SD card. All I get is terminal. Both on rpi3 and zero. So frustrating. What am I doing wrong.?please assist.i even went into sudo raspi-config and done some changes but nothing helps. Thanks for sharing.
It could be a lot of things... just off the top of my head from personal experience: 1) Are you using an adequate power supply? I had the same issue when I was trying to power my Pi 3 with a power supply that wasn't providing constant 5v. The problem went away when I picked up a Pi Foundation power supply. 2) Is your MicroSD card 8Gb+? I tried to install RetroPie on a 4Gb card and it would boot straight to console. 3) Did you use SDFormatter to format the MicroSD card before burning the image? I tried formatting my card using the built in Windows formatting tools and had issues trying to boot EmulationStation and would kick me straight to console.
I think the biggest benefit by far to adding WiFi for our purposes is to be able to just browse over the network and drop roms/bios from a local PC. It makes life so much easier on my Pi3
ive been able to do that with my Pi Zero 1.3 from day 1. just plug in a wireless usb into a hub, i needed a hub for 2 controllers anyways.

Can you please make a video on how to add overlays to retropie on a pi3 please. I'm looking to add them to the handheld systems.
Does the Raspberry Pi Zero W has a Recalbox version?
does same network mean same internet router
Yep
Bro I commented that 3 years ago I know now but thanks
Great tutorial as always! Can you Demo Kodi streaming a local video file on the network? Does the the wifi chip support 5ghz and AC wireless?
I googled doperoms and found heaven.
Thanks 'ETA Prime'. This is the best tutorial I've seen so far!
How do you ad a second controller to raspberry pi 0? The 0 only has one USB port.
So im noticing lesser performance on the pi 0 w using retropie 4.2+ any way you can either do a comparison video or put the 4.1 image back up so we can try it and see on a different SD card. thank you

I know it's late, but tumblepop played nicely on my Zero W.
a .gz file is a file format that needs to be extracted, not get the extension changed, as that can corrupt the file
^^ Deleting the .gz will prevent etcher from using the file

Emulationstation crashed during keyboard setup.Says to check the file/folder permissions and to make sure GPU_split is hight enough.... Any idea why?
Why do you have to get rid of the .gz extension?
because etcher probably doesn't support it

you have extract the file and not just cut off the ending.. I did the same mistake ... then it should work
DO NOT just remove the .gz ending! This is an archive and needs to be expanded. It should work when using the expanded file (.img)
