Time for an update on the living room makeover! I'm loving how it is turning out and wanted throw in some interior design tips as we go along. Enjoy!! P.S. Which fabric do you think I should use on the window seat? And secretary desk or no??
I love the window cushion you showed that you liked. It’s so inviting!
I believe the appearance of the veneer on the secretary is called figuring. There are different kinds of figuring like tiger stripe, spalted, fiddleback, and more. The appearance, or figure, is due to the innate qualities of the wood as well as how it was cut. I am sure people have done paint techniques to replicate different types of figuring (as was suggested below) but this looks like the authentic appearance of that particular wood to me. It is a pretty piece.
Absolutely. Looks like quarter sawn tiger oak to me
Please don’t paint the pillars. They are lovely in cream as an entrance to the next room!
Leaving the pillars cream is more classic and contrasts beautifully with your blue paint color. I would double think about leaving the window seat nook cream colored as well. It would be unexpected. Carry the cream color around the room, and a nice rest for the eye! About the secretary Love the scale and height of it in that corner. Some pieces don’t need a reason to be where they are placed other than they look beautiful 💛there….and it’s function could be a place to drop keys as you come in the door and to keep mail that is coming in or going out.
P.S. Love the collected/British look it brings to your space
That footboard would make a beautiful table, even a sofa table. The curves and details are great! The creamy pillars look so great against the gorgeous blue, but if it doesn't fit the darker feel you're going for, paint them. I love the detail on those brown slipper chairs. It's a pleasure to watch this all being designed, and hear your thoughts along the way.
I immediately thought she was going to say she was going to make it into a console table. Imagine with a beautiful piece of marble cut as the top!
My thoughts exactly.
Ever consider getting a vintage, or secondhand "oriental" rug for your spaces. They add depth of charachter and last a lifetime. Rich in color and texture. Definitely go with an English cottage vibe.
When someone commented your home always looks immaculate.... they obviously were not talking about the middle of a paint job when everything is in disarray. On a regular day it does look clean and beautiful. I agree the desk is beautiful, just not functional near the front door. The footboard is gorgeous. I could see a custom cut marble or quart top and use it as a console or wall table.
Absolutely love the color! , and the secretary desk ❤️❤️❤️
I think your choices are lovely. For me personally, I keeping my creamy white walls because of needing light ( I struggle with depression.)
I wouldn't paint the columns, it makes a nice transition to the next space. That caramel plaid might be good for the window seat to create an accent and also hide the dog hair just a bit (though I LOVE that darker rusty brown for that space, too, SO beautiful!) I do love the blue fabric but it might be too much unless you want the space to just feel recessed and not accented. Love your ideas. Oh, and love the secretary! It does make a nice drop zone, especially for mail and keys in the drawers. It would provide a bit of storage as well, you could easily put your purse or shopping bags, anything that needs to go out to the car down in the lower cabinet!!
That secretary desk is TIGER OAK. I have a buffet made from the same wood. It’s expensive down here in Georgia! Very pretty.
The dog is cracking me up. 🤣 She agrees with all of your design choices.
Yes to the secretary desk for now. Paint the pillars…so moody! The second to
The last fabric sample for the window seat. ( masculine )
Very bold colour choice for the walls, looks rich and cozy. Whatever fabric goes on the window seat prepare for it to fade from sun or repeated washing. My housekeeping clients have a sofa they let the dogs on and they just lay soft pile throws over it as they don't slip off and wash up easily. They get removed when company comes. Can't wait to see the reveal! My fave fabric pick is the lumbar pillow cover with trees in blue-green and brown.
Linda on New England fine living, had a good solution for window seat fabric. Her dog sleeps in their new window seats. She is sending for indoor/outdoor fabric samples, thinking the fabric will not fade and will wipe off.
I do like the secretary desk, and think it might be handy for mail etc. Once you said stretch marks, that is all I could see. We have a dresser that the movers brought in while it was raining (we were not here yet), and it became water spotted. It looks like it is a lepard spot design. I get tired of the look and oil it, and the spots disappear for awhile. All that to say, perhaps it is a finish that you could change?
Your precious dog watching your face as you speak as if she's absorbing the information.
Late to the party! I like your concept for the coffee table! Hope this is not sacrilege, but for the footboard- what if you cut off one curved side to allow it to be flush to the wall (idk if the necessary cut location would still allow the ‘centre’ to completely remain for a balanced look). Do you see where Im going? In the same way a chaise lounge can be one sided? And create another seat and storage within? Prob have to lose the legs to reduce the height. I think having wood brings nice depth and patina to dark academia. For this reason (and I surprise myself here) I votefor the chestnutty/red colour fr Decorator’s Best- super luxe with the contrast. It’s going to pop in the best way. I vote paint the pillars, but wait til then end to be sure. I think they are fantastic but don’t want to pop/contrast those. Lastly, on the secretary- imo you’re just looking too close. Put it in a place where there is a long view. In the video when you carry it in, the marks are super subtle. Thanks for another great video!
I’m on Team Paint-the-Pillars!!
I really love the fabric of the small pillow. It looks so good with the wall color and warms up the space. Love the plaids too!
Your fur baby looks so sweet!!! I can watch your utubes nonstop!! I always learn so much from you. Wow! On the living area!!! Can not wait to see it finished!!!! You always give me a jump start to get moving on my own home!!! Thanks so much for sharing❤
I like the secretary in that location
🥰
Hi Sarah, your aesthetic choices are stunning. Nice to see you venture into bolder yet muted tones. The secretary desk is beautiful but a little too imposing next to the door. The glass coffee table is worth dulling the shiny gold. It's gorgeous. Built in look to match the walls for the bookshelf sounds like a plan. Looking forward to the end results...and I would opt for the bold blue/white checks for the window seat.
The secretary desk looks (at my end) like it has a popular-in-its-time paint technique to make the oak look like an exotic wood. That time period had oak everything so the manufacturer was probably trying to dress it up a little; tiger maple was more expensive. I actually do like the desk next to the door; place to put the mail, jot down an address, store stamps and pens. Yeah, good spot for it.
Yes, you are so right about that paint technique on the desk. Exactly what I had thought.
Looks like quarter sawn oak to me. I have a solid oak dining room table ,1910 era quarter sawn oak and I have a secretary desk same. I have stripped them and tung oiled them.
So exciting!!!
I like the samples that came on the cards.
Love the color, love the whole plan! So funny I decided to paint my bedroom that blue and then you did your living room! I had no intention of going that color until my husband brought home a ton of swatches. So I really like the material that you didn't. That textured blue one. Love that pillow with the tapestry. Can't wait to see!
I did exactly the same in my living room, I painted the fireplace wall Benjamin Moore Hale Navy eggshell and the fireplace the same in a semi gloss, it looks absolutely beautiful. Love your home and style. ❤
I love the brownish slipper chairs. I would not paint the pillars, I think they look great the color they are, or I would strip the paint. I LOVE the blue striped fabric that you decided against for the window seat cushion. I don’t think it’s too textured at all, what with the jute rug. And I love the tapestry type pillow. I can’t wait to see what you decide on.
I agree for the pillars
I agree! That blue fabric for the sofa was the best one.
Oh my! Just adorable !
Loving the look you are heading in. The pillars would look lovely painted in the new dark color! And thats coming from someone who is currently removing paint from 1914 baseboard. I think the columns would be even more of a focal point in color!
I can't wait.
Looking amazing already. Can’t wait for the reveal!🤗
Wow, so many decisions! It’ll be amazing, for sure, to see the final reveal!
Love the color on the walls, also the rug. I was thinking if you still wanted to use the bed footboard, cut it in half and take out the center ( however much it is too long and put it back together. ) can’t wait to see the reveal .
Great tips!
Love all your ideas & enjoyed watching the snow.
Love the moody vibe. Dark colors are my favorite.
Love the paint color! I’m inspired!
I always come away with great ideas/tips. Thanks, Sarah.✨👏🏻
I think the window seat should be the blue stripe, that u didn’t like. Like the pillars light. ❤
Ooooh! Such a rich color for the walls - love it! You have all those lovely windows, so a deep color works beautifully! I'm guessing it took a minute to get used to after your creamy white scheme. So excited to see how it all comes together when you are done!!
I'm voting for the tan linen windowpane check fabric on the window seat - just because that pattern plays so well with other patterns you might bring in ... and if that's Keira's hang out area, it won't show the dirt and oil as much. I would definitely still wash the fabric before you make the bench seat cover and of course add a looooong hidden zipper so it's a breeze to take on and off for washing. Scotchguard would also be helpful, but you would want to be sure it was completely dry and had time to do any off-gasing before letting your fur-baby lounge on it! As for warming that chilly area up to make it cozier and more comfortable, I was wondering if you could use the under-tile floor warming coils? I often see leftover sheets of them at Habit for Humanity so you might not have to buy a whole floor system - just enough for the bench area and then the thermostat to run it. Is there any insulation in the bump out? That might be a simple solution too!
Thank you for all of the sample source ideas - they are so helpful. I hadn't heard of Tonic Living - will check them out!
Love the paint colour. Love the footboard. You say not much left to do and I am thinking, that is a lot. Your choice of fabric will be great, I am sure of it. Can’t wait for the reveal.
Thank you for all these sample sources. ❤️ Fabric choices is exactly where I am lost in my space.
Good Morning! Oh my gosh, this is SO fun to watch and incredibly helpful!! I am sincerely excited to see the final reveal!! Also, your hair looks gorgeous and your dog is precious! :) Have a lovely day!! :)
I love the secretary desk next to the door. I don't necessarily like the tiger wood though. It does look like stretch marks as you mentioned. I love the paint color you chose for the room and I can't wait for the reveal.
Your Desk is just great....and your Dog Lady 🐕 is so sweet...💘💝💖
Love the plaid with the maroon , reddish color. I know you like the off white with the blue stripe but it’s too light, especially if Kyra is going to lay there. As for the secretary, are you sure the “stretch marks” is the wood or just part of the finish? I would strip it and refinish it. It’s lovely in that corner
Love these ideas!!! I see it's snowing out the window. I am on the East coast and we have had NO SNOW at all this year. In fact it has not really been normal winter here at all.
Have you considered Sunbrella indoor/outdoor fabrics for the window seat? I used it to make slipcovers for two ottomans because the dogs liked to swipe their faces on it. The covers have held up very well even with repeated washing. I would purchase high end foam for your cushion though a French mattress would be tempting.
No to that coffee table, something more antique. 🌺🌲🌺
Love your dog
You can DIY paint your couch .. look at fabric paints if you still like it, but want different color
I love your dog!
your color choices are so pretty! I like to use flat or matte sheen for the walls and then the next sheen level up (satin) for the trim. Gloss, lacquer, even semi gloss is dated and boring (to me). It's very popular now over the last couple of years to use the same sheen for the walls and the same sheen on the trim but just step up or step down (using your fan deck!) the coordinating color. Especially since your home style has a vintage/romantic/cottagecore/almost English style, so the no contrast look in your paints would probably look great. If you look & touch the paper in actual wallpaper books, you won't need to collect samples. I find it hard to see "paper" texture from looking at something online. I enjoy your vids! Keep it up :)
I like the velvety Carmel color for the window seat and yes on the Secretary. If it doesn't go against your sensitivities it would be pretty painted.
Use the secretary as a display area. Display plants, books, little animals, etc.
I love your ridgeback she’s so cute
I like your ideas and I like the dark academia
The new color is fabulous! I’ve decided to paint my bedroom a slightly lighter. brighter , less dusty version of that beautiful blue. My woodwork is the color of your tiger oak quartersawn secretary. That graining highly prized! Now that you mention it, it DOES look like stretch marks. LOL
Thank you for sharing your sources. In the past I had collected paint chips from the various stores. When I moved to New Orleans I found a family-owned SW supplier with multiple stores that gives me contractor pricing because I am (still) doing the entire house. Recently I visited LL flooring and took pics of their samples. Then I went to their site and sent samples to a friend in California for less than $10 for shipping. I'm sending him a paint fan next.
I keep seeing the windows in velvet. The curtains are cute. I think I’d like like the heaviness and depth of a velvet or heavier fabric.?
Loving the blue, it looks so wonderful. I really like the white sample with blue tree shapes? I think that would add a nice texture and look.
I am on the fence about the secretary, paint it if you will leave it. I don't think it is the right shade of wood.
Good luck, can't wait to see the reveal. By the way, great info on the samples. The fan decks(paint), most places charge now, at least where I have checked in Canada.
Fan decks are not free in my area Love the paint color you chose. And that pillar with the green and blue. All colors is gorgeous
I also like the blue “ too textured” fabric…
And yes the secretary is too imposing there but so gorgeous. Maybe you should just drive it on over to my place (in MO, lol).
Ordered 10 free paint swatches today from SW and their 8“ sticker squares are $3.95 ea currently. Free shipping!
Isn’t the desk a tiger oak, I have a piece that I was told was a tiger oak it came from the Carolina’s at a furniture store they dealt with that wood it took 6 months to get my piece. The things with samples is that some of them are pretty expensive, and it is not like they are going to take the cost off if you purchase the item.
Yes I find them expensive as well.
I saw the floral print fabric & instantly had to watch the video! I'm in love w it. Did I miss hearing where u found it?(don't recall u saying) I've had mostly black/white interior for last few yrs, but I'm thinking of going back to a blue. Love the rug & the fabrics u picked out are perfect. I can't wait to see the finished product!
I would wallpaper or paint the ceiling too I have a all solid wood paneled library in my house and it's all dark wood and has lacquer or something and not my favorite stain color but keep going back and forth on painting it all as you can't do part of room as it goes up staircase. I haven't painted as it looks good at Christmas and the dark wood looks like back in style . I'm thinking of using grass cloth to lighten room up on back of shelfs or possibly other type of wallpaper and thinking of doing my ceiling or a plaid or something. I'm also doing dark academia and European style library (Celtic, English, RL look)
Ha! It's tiger oak used on your secretary! See the tiger stripes!🐯😄 I absolutely love this style! I cannot wait to see your finished room! Thanks for sharing....
Go for the coffee table! It’s a good price for what it is. Olympia is a trip, but worth it!
Omg ❤I just love it all Sarah. So beautiful. Love your style and listening to your incredible insight and design style. You’re soooo speaking my language. ❤. I feel like you’re in my head…lll😂
Btw, I noticed it was snowing 🌨️ outside the window you’re sitting in front of. Oh my. I love ❤️ it. It’s so hot 🥵 here in Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 right now, so watching the snow ❄️ falling was so beautifully soothing and cozy 🤗
Thank you 🙏 for the beautiful gift you are. I’m so grateful to God to have found you recently. Looking forward to studying with you sometime and even coming to the USA for a retreat …. Oh be still my heart ♥️. That would be a dream 💭
❤❤❤❤
What’s your hair color? 😊
Runner mats
I like your third fabric swatch for the window seat, the one you said you used for children's chairs? That way you can mix pattern and texture with your pillows and not get tired of the seat cushion. Then again, you have so many fabulous choices I can see a pattern if that's the way you prefer it. It's going to be so perfect! oxJulia
Aww I miss my Shelby! She looked so much like your girl, that same amber honey color, a lab. I vote for Kiera (sp?) making cameo appearances more often (if not every video). I just wanted to reach right in there and per her 😊
Just went to SW. Fan deck was $13. Material bank is amazing. Overnight samples !
Ok, good to know!
I swear I have all the same wallpaper samples and fabric samples! Lolgood taste!💕
Great minds think alike!
Aw, your dog looks just like my dearly departed boy. Behaves like he did too. Miss him so much! 🤎Okay, off to watch the rest of the video...
Very nice tapestry pillow, love the "stretch mark" desk too. 😂 Looking forward to the reveal.
I have a coffee table just like the one pictured. It does not have an Italian mark, but it looks identical (probably a reproduction). The gold is too shiny for me, however, it is a bit tarnished near the feet. I plan on painting it myself. I did not pay $1000, only $75 for it and the matching end table, which I sold.
“Stretch marks!” I will never look at tiger oak again without thinking stretch marks! 😂
The blue block print would be my choice for the window seat cushions. Pick another coffee table. Something similar but not shiny- maybe black matte. Yes to the bead board backing to book case. Find another spot for the Secretary. Your really close now.
As far as the coffee table goes, is it the only one in existence? Probably not, they will make more. Do what you want with it. I hope you get it for a good deal. I'm eager to see what your living room looks like!
We are trying to decide what to paint our interior ever house right now have you heard of alabaster Kestrel White by Sherwin-Williams? When we moved into our house the paint is antique white and it has a yellow undertone it's not horrible but I do not love it .Any tips on the two colors I mentioned? I'm struggling on which one to choose I have a lot of rich dark Antiques and I also love the Moody look not sure I'm brave enough to paint a wall dark but have considered it thank you so much I consider you an expert and would value your opinion!!!
Love the Tiger Oak Secretary! Now all I see when I look at my furniture pieces are “ stretch marks”. :)
Is there a Ruggable rug you could use on the window seat?
Ok so I just found your channel and I’ve watched several videos since then. Are you going with the dark academia style? Whatever it is, I love the colors. I don’t do blue, however I love your walls, please don’t oozing the trim. That creamy color is gorgeous. What color is it? I realized that I think that’s where I’m leaning. I just didn’t know what it was called. I was leaving boho/ japandi. I do however still lean black and white in my paint choices will just touches of the jewel tones. Anyways I’ve been loving your channel!
Love that blue Sara! It's going to be gorgeous! Is that snow or sleet that's falling outside? 💝
It was snow that day!
where did the rug come from . I love it.
The floral one is from Ruggable.
Lol ! Now I know what my stomach looks like not to mention my thighs!! An old secretary.
Mine, too. LOL
I'm in love with your paint color. What is the name of it? I'm looking for a color like that for my bedroom and dinning room
Slate Tile by Sherwin Williams!
Brown tan fabric for the dog bed. Lol stretch marks...I see them!
How about replacing piano with the desk. That desk is an opportunity for great styling as the seasons change, and such a pretty piece. And useable. You are attached to the piano, but I am thinking the desk is definitely in keeping with the English cottage vintage style, and speaks of generational collecting of furniture, which is what it is all about.
Sarah, I'm having a very hard time finding the 🆓 large, non-sticky-backed paint samples from SW. Could you kindly provide a link? Those seem perfect for my needs! Thank you in advance.
Hi! They're listed on the website here, and you can often find some in-store if you have a SW locally!
samples.sherwin-williams.com/view/peel-&-stick?_gl=1*1tv6cn8*_gcl_aw*R0NMLjE2OTI2ODExNzMuQ2p3S0NBandsb3luQmhCYkVpd0FHWTI1ZEs3T1FuUk5CUTdHNVZhZjFrbW9HUTl4RWNpSktmVkQxdWpiN3pHUlJXT3dZTXNUWDI4OV9Cb0NDM0VRQXZEX0J3RQ..*_gcl_au*MTk5NzY3ODU0My4xNjkyNjgxMTcz
@@SheHoldsDearly Thanks Sarah. This link actually doesn't sent to the free, non-sticky-backed ones you referred to in your video though. It's the typical sticky one for a charge. 🤷🏽♀️ Perhaps those are no longer offered. Thank you for your time, though.
Does ruggable send samples
They don't. My trick is to just buy the smallest size rug (like the 2x3') and then it's easier to return if I end up not loving it/not needing it.
Since your dog loves the window seat, you may want to choose a fabric that is easy care so that you can wash as needed.
Néw subscribe 🖤 can you show us how you use software/ canva to create your vision slides please.
I love your hair color 🍁
Hello! I have a whole video about my design boards here: ua-cam.com/video/EVQx0vYPKdk/v-deo.html
Thank you so much ! This weekend I’ll binge watch watch the videos in your ch ♥️
I’m a bit confused. Did you get rid of your beautiful green sofa?
Nope, it's just moved/covered while we are painting!
I buy Maison Jansen stuff. Please, please, please don't mess with that table. 🙏
Is the secretary that you called “stretch marks” (🤣🤣🤣), tiger Stripe Oak veneer? I think it is beautiful.
Sorry, just wanted to add the secretary is in the wrong place by the door. I think there would be a more suitable spot. You will find it
Hahahaha!!;. I see stretch marks too!!!
I ❤️ your decor! I’m not good at decor. Would you say some of your style, if not all, is French Chateau? Please don’t laugh at me! 😊
couldn't you make it a table?
