SPECIAL NOTE: I have never monetized by channel (up since May 2007). You can verify that with You Tube. I never monetized my channel because I wanted zero trouble from a legal standpoint (THAT is when moral issues, copyright laws, etcetera come into sharp focus). So I PAID for these videos but I have made not one dime from them...as it should be. I am merely a humble fan wishing to help promote these great artists WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED WHATSOEVER. Just a true, from-the-heart fan here.

James has been singing his ass off since 1992. I worked stage with them during Images and Words Tour and he rocked his ass off every night. I've seen him sick as a dog and still put on a great show. Always a class act to the crew and his fans. Can't ask for much more. As far as Mike P. I think it's taken out of context. The question should be if DT NEEDED a drummer would Portnoy be a possibility? Of course he would, but he's not their current drummer so James is defending the current team. Can't blame him. It ain't easy singing DT songs. Maybe that's why you don't hear any at karaoke night.

    • @beppemusic82
      @beppemusic82 4 роки тому +2

I firmly disagree. I'm a strong D.T. fan, I know at least 5 album note for note and I've attended a lot of live shows. Probably he sang good (never great) in 2 of them, in a lot of the others he was barely acceptable, and in a relevant % he was terrible, constantly struggling to reach high notes (recently although the down-tuning) with such a fatigue, instable tuning, annoying timbre. I don't know any professional singer or teacher that admire him and take from him concepts for singing and inspiration. I've heard their song played live with better voice from their tribute bands in small pubs... he could barely sing in a karaoke night without receiving "boos". So, although I'm devoted to a lot of his studio recordings and some albums would never be the same without him, I hope that they'll raplace him and hire a true stallion. So that when I'll go to the concerts I'll think that the singer is at the same level of the others. For me he must be replaced, not Portnoy. Sorry about my english

He spent New Years Eve 19/20 with Myung, he performed with Jordan on his cruise event, and he took a photo of him and Petrucci together in December last year (and their daughters are best friends). It’s literally just James that he doesn’t have a relationship with. The singer has one of the hardest jobs in a band. A singers voice is not hardware like a guitar or drums, its totally related to your health and strength. To sing James's vocal lines every night on a long tour must be really demanding, people should try and sing the songs themselves to feel how hard it is.

I love DT, but one of my gripes has always been their melody writing. I'm not sure how much of it is James' input and how much of it has been JP's or Mike's, but my philosophy has always been that one should play to a singer's strength. And hitting those notes night after night...

I feel like this is such a cop out. The other band members all contribute way more in terms of composition, mastering, lyric contribution and so much more. Sure singing is a part of what a singer should contribute, but LaBrie has had a whole career to study lyric writing, song form and so on which he just hasn't done. You look at Maynard's contribution to Tool vs LaBrie's to DT and it makes up far more than the notes on stage.
As an example, you look at the rhyme couplets on Untethered angel, and they're 90% perfect rhyme, with little variation. It's like if Petrucci only ever used the blues scale for solos. There's so much space to improve, but he just hasn't put the work in to do it. I don't begrudge him for his vocal injury way back when, but it's also not a free pass to avoid contributing.

dt fans are not toxic, they are mostly like jazz audience, they can understand what they hear and are polar opposites of whatever Onika Maraj-Petty fans stands for. So It's not just about Labrie's problems with his voice. Problem is him. Why he doesn't accept the defeat and ask DT come up with a solution instead? lowering keys? getting backup vocals? nothing. He simply can't take criticism. Oh btw, if Petrucci says Portnoy will come to our show and play James got nothing to do about it. "I don't see that happening". Childish answer.
The other problem is his attitude towards Portnoy after he quit. Couldn't keep it professional and shut up like the others did no matter how hostile Portnoy was those days. When you carefully read 10 yo clickbait interviews that edited to provoke their drama, you'll realize only what James said was pretty much unedited. C'mon who the f. blames a bandmate for stealing their limelight? seriously?
Petrucci had internet parodies, in the old internet he was the Jesus of guitarists, g3 shows, solo albums, Rudess was the most active person in DT around 2005-10 with different projects, solo albums, and even he built a bloody software company to make music apps! He became the Wizard guy. Myung never wanted attention as far as we know but he built a character with his silence. And when everyone was at their peak and developed a character, what did James do for his own? Moustache man? sorry mate that's taken by Superman.

He sounds SOOOOO Canadian here...lol...and I also recently listened to Dennis DeYoung talk and he sounded SOOOOOO Chicagoan, lol... my theory is as they get older, they care less about sounding cool or hip or "non-regional" haha...
Secondly...John Elefante hasn't been in Kansas for ages. I forget the name of the new guy, but even before that Steve had returned for like 20 years or something lol...James answers the question as though John Elefante is still in the band.

A HUGE Steve Walsh fan (and John Elefante years) and I know he and DT are huge fans of Kansas as well (and Portnoy). To SEE and hear a double bill DT/Kansas would bring the old with new fans as well, much like the 35th Anniversary show of YES with DT opening for the Train of Thought Tour (where DT played a EXCELLENT instrumental version of "Machine Messiah").
Walsh's voice all the way up to "In the Spirit of Things" was in its prime, and folks not familiar with Kansas and their "deeper cuts" should seek out all those albums. Including his solo album "Glossolalia", those songs are soo damned emotionally driven, its as if he is _acting out_ the parts vocally.
I wonder if LaBrie, being Canadian, followed the band "Saga"? Vocalist "Michael Sadler" never lost his astounding voice since their 1st album in 1978 to this year 2020. An amazing band in their own right.
Been a fan of Dream Theater since their debut "When Dream and Day Unite" (and bought it on "Lp", which I still have), and was a big Dominici fan. I was a bit upset that he was let go, but I soon warmed up to James, and unlike others, I still maintain HE is the "voice" of the band. Though it is still odd for me to hear James do tracks from WDADU, just because the tempo and amount of words were suited for Dominici. But I really did enjoy the "When Dream and Day Re-unite" DVD :).

I think if you read the Dream Theater book and you search hard enough into interviews and videos you will clearly see and know that Portnoy pretty much dislikes James's singing, and when Portnoy got into bands that were doing more and more "cookie monster" vocals he felt that James was holding them back. James pretty much knows all of that and tension grew and grew to where apparently towards the end there was not much of a relationship left. It happens.

Also around the time of Train of Thought Mike thought that James was particularly lacklustre and he was given warning to shape up or ship out. James took time to get fit, work on his voice and by the time Octavarium came out he was back in good shape, but that kind of tension between mike and James would never really be forgotten

Well James wasn't part of the core group that formed the band together. That was Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung. So to him, Mike leaving was like ok, well we gotta get a new drummer now and it wasn't as hard for him as other people in the band. Those core original members are apparently still in touch and have buried the hatchet but DT has a new permanent drummer now.

I'm also one of the people who don't like James' voice, he can sing but not my taste, it's a unique gift, each vocalist has his own voice when one hears, it's easy to identify who's voice especially high pitch vocal, but James voice doesnt please many ears. However, vocals like of micheal romeo band, impellitteri, Circus Maximus, etc. are pleasing satisfaction to many ears.

I find James too cold as singer, but undoubtedly he's got the chops. And he's been cool enough to send you this video, kudos to him! On the gossip side, is funny he's not spoken with Mike since Mike left DT while Mike's constantly hanging out with John Petrucci, isn't it? I guess we could read between the lines here...

Pedro LB I think from past interviews I’ve seen there was some animosity between mike n James, although neither have come straight out and said it, it’s been implied by both on different occasions

I’ve met DT three time in the Portnoy era. LaBrie was the least personable out of all of them. Even Myung the introvert was nicer than him. Kinda think he’s a tad on the douchy side.

10 years thats insane. Actually insane after 25 years. Even Petrucci and Rudess have linked up with Mike in their personal time. I feel like LaBrie however might have taken things personally or just felt disappointed. Or maybe had a hard time dealing with the label during all that. I still think regardless of doing music, everyone needs to reconcile. Band break ups are like divorces, if it was members only things would not be so chaotic. But when you bring in lawyers, all civility goes to shit.

I heard on a few different places that Mike and James never got along super well, presumably not as well as everyone else did. Don't have a source, though.

RetrO I mean Mike has gone on record multiple times for throwing shade at James for his singing(ex: the recorded podcast clip of Mike shitting on James singing and Mike wanting to remove James in the early 00’s). To be honest, I’d be completely understanding of James’ ill feelings towards Mike.
