I've never laughed out loud watching any DaVinci Resolve tutorial videos, until now. The FART BOOM.mp3 killed me. Humor is on another level. LIFETIME SUBSCRIBER!!!
Easily one of the greatest UA-cam tutorials… of all time. Thank you Zach!! Been teetering on switching from premiere to Davinci for yonks now and finally made the plunge which led me here. Literally how you explained the pain points of premiere is my internal rage dialogue every day working in it. RIP Adobe. Instant subscribe ❤
One of the most helpful videos I have ever watched! Nice one Zach! In the process of finishing my last project in Premiere before the big move. I have done some practicing in Resolve and so far I love it! The colour grade trick of copying the grades between clips… wow! What a time saver that is! 👌🏻
Man this is exactly what I wanted and your style just made it perfect. Felt like a friend is sharing it with me. Hope you have made or make more such videos of transitioning will be really helpful
Dude this is exactly what I needed. I have been editing in premiere for the last 7 or 8 years. This definitely demystified the switch. Excited to try it out. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you thank you thank you.. i was watching the resolve website tutorials but they aren't making the exact style of videos there that i make. But this is exactly what i needed to quickly go through the basics. But i wished you would've shared the "speed ramping" and "masking" methods also but maybe for another day. But hey, Thanks again zach!
no thank YOU! I thought about including those things but honestly my knowledge is very limited on those topics. Although I did see that Resolve's latest update has some crazy magic masking that I plan on testing!
Such a great thought-of, simple, natural, funny, yet not overproduced and manipulatively overthought content from Zach. I recently started using the program as well, I know most of (but not well) what's thought by you, but it was still a pleasure to dive through, laugh a bit, and learn a few bit tiny things from you. A pleasure watching your content, keep it real.
Wow, I bit the bullet and got Davinci Resolve 2 days ago and this is the first Premiere to Davinci change tutorial that actually helps. So in-depth, so funny. Thanks dude!
I really love the way you teach and explain core concepts. i've been editing for a while and wanted to switch, but you not only explaining a tool/workflow but also giving examples for their utility really helped me understand and "get it". Great work, in another life you would've been a teacher for sure!
Best thing I ever did. I've used Premiere over 8 years but I was finally fed up with all the BS so I decided to give it a try. It asks you what program you used before so it setups timeline similar to program that you used. Give it a day or two and you will never go back, just like that first iPhone you got instead the android. You never look back!
Was super overwhelmed trying to transition but your downloadable keyboard shortcuts and your personality in this video made the whole process actually enjoyable haha thank you for this!
Been on Premiere for as long as I can remember, and was of course overwhelmed by this change, but this video is great, and helped me a lot thank you, youre a legend!
What an awesome video from start to finish. I laughed, I cried. But seriously, I hit the point of no return with Premiere this week when my spec'd up M2 Pro Mac couldn't handle a 4K clip in the timeline without constant beach-balling and using 103% CPU (?!?!). Da Vinci is a breath of fresh air but learning a new tool after 10+ years of Adobe was/is terrifying. This video helped loads, so thanks
These videos have been a savior Zach! For someone who’s been using Pr for 6 years, it’s exciting to try a new software but even better when someone explains things super well. Cheers Zach! 🤙🏼
to say this video was helpful is an understatement, it made the transition to davinki that much easier, not only did i really learn a lot, but also had a good time. really enjoyable video!
Thanks Zach! The humorous breaks really helped follow along. You stand out from the average cringy youtube tutorial. I edited my first video on DaVinci in a day after this tutorial!!!
Dude you're awesome, love your vibe. And thanks for this perfect video, i'm a professional industry editor trying to understand the davinci landscape. Cheers man
yeww! this was so good zach!! Tab shortcut is genuis! (also not really the same but I mapped G to "normalize audio" - kinda hits the same as audio gain in pr)
Thanks so much for this, Zach! I've just decided to "leave the dark side" and make the switch to Resolve. Your video has been SUPER helpful in giving me a quick introduction to the Resolve interface. (I don't think it will be as difficult as I expected!). I know I'll be referencing this video again as I work through my first Resolve project. Thanks again! :)
Great Video. Easy to understand, solid humour and actionable! Love you for the free keyboard bindings that are quite similar to my previous premiere ones.
I know I'm waaaaaayyy late to the party, I'm just learing DaVinci and good god is this video absolutely amazing at getting set up. Thanks so much for this!
🤣🤣🤣🤣wow at this point I almost need to find your premiere pro video. Very nice so far... got me excited for migrating away from Premiere... Instant subscriber from the US Virgin Islands. I cracked up throughout and also responded as if we were conversating in person. Very impressive
Really good. Love your thinking and practicality. One question remains for me. Is there a possibility to see the keyboard shortcuts on the displayed keyboard without putting your cursor on it? Like in PP?
If you're still looking for this I figured it out. Open the Keyboard Customization Window > Click the Search bar on the far right next to the Show All Dropdown Menu> Type in show > Scroll Down to Workspace > Hit the Arrow Next to Show Panel in Workspace > Scroll Down to Where it Says Medial Pool > Select the Blank Area Next to that and Press Tab > Then You're Done and Your Macro is Now Set. 22:37 I * think * I figured it out: I think audio gain in Davinci is "Increase Volume." I tried typing "increase" instead of "gain" into the keyboard preferences, "Monitoring" popped up, and if you click on it, "Increase Volume" shows up. Hopefully that works!
Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering, when you click Q to delete the first part of a clip, is it possible to make it not leave an empty gap? In Premiere Pro it also shifts the clip back so that there is not a gap between. (Hope that makes sense) Thanks so much!
Hey Zach, New to the channel but found you because I’m planning on making the jump, however, can I transfer/bring a project across from PP and continue the edit on DaVinci? Or are my PP projects lost to me unless opened on PP? Thanks for the excellent tutorial, I’ll be checking out more in the future. M
I love adobe but there 2 reasons Im about to switch: 1st: Monthly subscribtion (technicly not a problem but the price they want monthly is not fair imo) 2nd: you have most of the programs in pne program (sound editing, "after effects" etc etc)
I'm getting no sound in DaVinci from any of my clips :( It shows the sound bar moving when the clip it playing, and my system settings have the correct device...
I’m curious, why is it better to do Color adjustment then Rec709 LUT? I would have done the opposite (because I remember Premiere Pro starts with « base adjustments » then « creative adjustments »
He's also doing it the wrong way. Not that you can't get a good grade out of your clips his way, but it's just wrong. Always do your color space transform(s) on the very first node and last. Also, name your nodes, especially if you have many. The color wheels work the best by doing e.g. log to DaVinci Wide Gamut on the first node and DaVinci Wide Gamut to rec.709 on your last. Darren Mostyn has some great videos on the topic, 2-3 years back on his YT page, and why you should do it that way. He's a professional color grader.
I heard that da vinci allows you to export all audio channels as an polywav. Is that really true?? If that is true, that opens so many doors.. it makes audio mixing so easy.. if that is true, then I am switching tomorrow.
Great video! Somehow I came away learning how to cut my cat's nostril hairs. Also, thank god you showed that export project feature. I almost uninstalled the DaVinci when I saw I couldn't save project files. I use my own cloud system and I need to be able to save project files in a specific locations, not some top secret database on my C drive. I'll give DaVinci another chance and hopefully that feature does what I need! I can't wait to drop the buggy, bloated mess that is Premiere.
You don't know what you're missing out on. DaVinci Resolve has hardware acceleration, for playback and render, even in the free version. It's much faster.
It took me a hot minute to make the jump, but I'm feeling stoked. A big thing I miss is the transform effect in premiere. I loved making crazy zooms with motion blur.

If all your clips are very identical, you can also do a timeline based grade. Or for example the color space transform in one go.

yeah, BlackMagic name their things different and uses more technical industry terms. Something a PP user will have to deal with.

Can you choose the codec, the res, the bitrate the color range etc when you generate proxies? Or is it just doing it's job by default?
The codec, yes. Not the bitrate.
Glad you made the switch. Adobe has gone hungry and their like they are leechers on your money. Most of the time Adobe application keeps crashing
