Yup! I did my first race Summer 2023, a 5K in May that was the gateway drug to the marathon which I did 2 weeks ago. Took it slow and did 5 half marathons leading up to it and followed a steady marathon training plan.
@@its_Matt_B_ Took my legs 3 days to handle stairs without holding on :-). My quads were shot but managed my first slow run 6 days later. Walking a couple days in between definitely helped to get the blood flowing.
Resting is something I have to work on. I also love buying running shoes. I am a sucker for running shoe technology and there are some shoes in my collection that took me a while to make it fit in my rotation. Among those mistakes, these two are my most glaring ones.
There are a lot of us out there that share the prevalence of these mistakes, and while not resting is a serious mistake that really has to be addressed, being a sucker for running shoe tech seems fairly acceptable, if not normal! 🤣
I love the shoe reviews and I really love the reflective videos like this! And you’ve hit a great note as always! My Garmin broke yesterday while I was working on my car. A great tip to check marketplace! Hopefully I’ll find just the right one! And yes it’s time for 🥞!
🥞 As a new runner, I didn't foresee the time/health cost of injury or understand the process of stimulus-adaptation (and need for rest). In my case, my lifestyle changed to fit running. I think new runners should run at whatever pace makes them happy, recognizing that running harder will require more rest. Running at conversational pace is for people who have already established consistency and have longer-term goals. While I believe that "fueling before runs" requires a bit of nuance, I absolutely agree that under-eating relative to running effort will lead to injury. And is a tricky thing to manage for anyone trying to lose weight. My tip would be to think long-term, keep calorie deficits small, reduce simple carbs outside of run fueling, and bump up the protein.
Some great ideas here that can get lost in the macro goals of either running for weight loss or staying injury free. Good observation that conversational running is for runners who are already consistent. It’s a common complaint that newer runner’s HR are immediately too high to maintain a conversation and they have to walk to get it back down.
🥞love the video, except the part where you made me feel guilty about buying too many shoes... but my wife loved that part so there is balance in the universe.
I imagine the emojis are different in Solvenia! 😊 The pancake emoji probably wouldn't get as much use as it does in the U.S! 🤣 Yep, rest days and running shoes. More of both!
For an after run shake I just throw some milk and plant-based protein powder in a shaker. Only takes a minute or two. I don't do it after every run, and sometimes in summer it was my dinner because the weather was so hot I couldn't eat a proper meal after getting home after 7pm.
That's a nice easy way to get some calories and protein in after a run! A run by itself doesn't do anything for our appetite, but a hot run just torpedos it!
🥞 I think the eating before a run, it requires time or waking up extra early (only wake up extra early to eat when it’s the long run) and I am also trying to maximize on the sleep 🤷🏾♀️!
Matt B it's my last week before the loch Ness marathon,so far I have done one five mile run and going to take it easy in the gym . Really want to hit the miles ,so just a carb binge from now until Sunday take it easy mate
A recent one for me has been adding strength training to my weekly regime and also resting - not working on strength has definitely been an issue for me in the past - feeling the benefits now
Glad you've started with the strength work! It really makes a huge difference, and really doesn't take too long. I never do strength for more than 20 mins at a time!
@@its_Matt_B_ skipping is my new jam too - never did it before but I’ve got the hang of it now and 5-6mins is pretty intense if you get the speed up 💪🏻
🥞I now a protein shake after most my workouts. These are the pre-made shakes in packs of 4 from your grocery store/walmart or favorite warehouse store. Typically with 15-32g plant protein. A cheaper alternative is chocolate milk or even regular milk/soy milk. Taking some protein in liquid form also replaces the lost water in the body.
This would be a good easy option for me to adopt. Pre-made is really the only way i'd be able to have one as I always seem to finish my run with the exact amount of time to get ready for work! 🤣
BTW, I saw the time stamp of your comment when I opened my computer around 0530. It says you commented at 0230 CST. Do you work nights or do you just stay up late?
As a running coach, I try to accommodate my athletes' desires, when it comes to preferred mileage and even preferred types of speed workouts and strength building runs. It's a fun puzzle to get the athlete to their goals while letting them dictate their favorite training methods. 😂
🥞🥞🥞 picked up Ingebrigsten's method of training Norwegian-style. i got a heat cramp during a cross country race that same week, so id say i learned my lesson in overtraining. now the shoe addiciton... we dont talk about that haha.
Ugh! That's a tough lesson to learn! Glad you're ok! Yeah, the shoe thing...I think I speak for us all when I say: it's not an addiction. I could stop anytime I wanted. I just don't want to! 🤣
Now I'm hungry 🥞 This reminded me of my 1st half a couple of years ago my 1st mile was 10:57 and mile 13 was 15:20 so yeah I went out to fast. 😂 compared to my most recent half my 1st mile was 10:39 and mile 13 was 10:10.
🥞 I’m learning that rest needs to be part of the routine. Dismiss the guilt of not running that day and be comfortable with not going out every day.
This is huge, and easier said than done. Although I don't struggle with it nearly as much as I used to!
Such great advice. Especially not getting caught up in other peoples training!
Yep! It's any easy thing to do, and it never makes our own training better!
🥞 Good video. In the middle of marathon training I found that something as simple as taking an extra rest day does wonders.
Glad you found this out! The extra rest day doesn't always make you feel better, but you're recovering and will still perform better!
