I remember John Noakes from Blue Peter climbing the mast! Scary stuff right at the top.

I did my Navy basic training there in 1974, Climbed the mast and I've still got the trophy for best shot in my recruitment.

Wow Jon. That mast is mighty high. It’s sad to see the base like it is but at least it’s still there. Thank you so much for watching and commenting

@@ALWResearchTeam All recruits had to pass the Royal Navy swimming test in that pool. Wearing a pair of thick cotton overalls, you had to jump from the top diving board. swim three lengths and then tread water for five minutes. By then the overalls weighed a ton! Everyone passed the test because the instructors wouldn't let you get out of the pool until the time was up!

So glad we never had the manning the mast ceremony at Raleigh when i passed out in 2000 (rouge derrière, i know lol). Awesome vid mate, shame to see the place in such a state, the government should have protected that mast for posterity.

Hi Ryan. They still did rope climbing when I joined up in 1996 and I was bricking it. As part of PT A or B I can’t remember which. Each new entrant had to climb to the top of a rope in the gym (approx 30 meters up and touch the gym roof) then slide down in a controlled manor. The entry before us a guy fell from the top and broke both his legs and one of his arms. HSE got involved and blanket banned static rope climbing for the duration of our basic training and beyond. This was days before we were due to do it. I was so relieved as I’m no rope climber. Mast manning would have certainly not been for me either. Fook that lol.
Thanks for watching and commenting Ryan. It sure is a shame the place has been trashed. Security was really tight there. We had to dodge the regular patrols. We had to be stealthy and quiet the whole time. I’ve no idea how the idiots got away with smashing the place up without detection.

Joined at the tender age of 15 in 1962. For me the regime was tough and my time at Ganges was not enjoyable .Went back twice as ships company and always treated the "nossers" decently. Did my twelve years and went merchant navy.

There was a ghost in this pool. I was there 1960. A lad was found cringing in the corner at night after seeing splashes in the water.when the lights were switched on there was nothing

was at ...... for my police training. Lots of stories here, did you find the hope faith and charity steps ? The young sailors would be ran up and down the steps a few didn’t survive ..

Hello Andy, thanks for watching and commenting. We could not get too close to the steps due to ‘security’ reasons. I heard many stories about them over the years. Do you know what the duck pond is about in the mess hall area?

ALW Exploration - no can’t recall as you said lots of stories underground tunnels, ghosts (100%) green Gilbert a spitfire pilot who allegedly washed up near by covered in sea weed. Very creepy place as I’m sure you found out.
