Thanks for the behind the scenes on the Hand Finished stuff and the thought process on why it didn't work out for you.

I think there is a market out there for craft pipes. There is also a market for beginning pipe smokers. If you were just starting to smoke a pipe would you rather plunk down $50 or $250 for your first pipe?
There is a market for people who collect quality pipes and those who are figuring out where their pipe smoking journey is taking them.
I have some pipes that were pricey but, I save those for special occasions.
For my daily pipe if I drop or break a pipe that cost me less than $50 I don't get butt hurt about it.
I see your point but, you have to consider the market.
    Just my $.02!

I've thought about this same topic a lot of the past few years as well. You brought up some points I hadn't quite thought of. I like the discussion.
I have personally thought about this issue as being a mismatch of market. Based on surveys that people like pipesmagazine have done, there is a huge bulge of young pipe smokers which has appeared recently. Unfortunately, these people (of which I am one, I suppose) suffer from the universal young affliction of poorness. The vast majority of this new market base are buying cheap pipes right now. The ones that do drift into the higher price bracket fit two categories. Either they're not aware of the artisan pipe industry and think that a mid grade peterson is a massive luxury, or they are pipe nerds who are very aware of the artisan industry and thus are also starkly aware of the difference between a full custom and a "hand-finished" pipe and would rather the high end makers keep doing what they do best.
However, this does bode well for the future of the artisan market as this group of young pipe smokers grows older and obtain stable incomes. You guys might reap the benefits of it in about 10 years. Disclaimer, I'm not educated in economics and so could be totally wrong, but I love the discussion.

Hey Jared, thanks for the video. I'm looking for some advice. I'm thinking of starting out into the the pipemaking game. I've been doing lots of research for the last while. What I kind of budget would it take to get started? Cheers!
