In this video I compare common rooftop tents for camping, overlanding, or whatever other vehicle based adventures that you might want to check out. I have the iKamper Mini rooftop tent on my Tacoma, the GFC Platform RTT on my Land Cruiser, and a Roam Adventure Vagabond rooftop tent on my loaner Gladiator from RMT Overland. I've had years of experience with a bunch of different tents and have spent countless nights out under the stars in all different types of rooftop tents. I talk about my experience with the different kinds of RTTs, and the pros and cons of each. Hope you enjoy!

Thank you for the honest opinions. Too many people just "Oh yeah! This is the best!" and end up advocating bad product. So thank you again for being honest and upfront! Means a lot!
Honesty is the best policy
Tip for those aluminium extendable ladders for the RTTs, stick some anti-skid strips on each step. It's amazing how that little mod makes a huge difference.
The 2 skylights on the roam is an amazing feature. And having the annex is a huge bonus
The wedge design or hard shell is definitely the route I’m going.
I just went from the very nice Tepui Kukenam (too long to set up and I needed a ladder to set up on my 2013 Access Cab Tacoma 4x4) to the iKamper 2.0 2X. Very happy with it and the step ladder stays home. Lots of room for my solo lifestyle. Sits on Yakima Raingutter Towers and a SnugTop shell. Thanks for all the great videos!! Cheers! JP
everybody: thats a neat tent!
koreans: thats a mobile rooftop...
I have a roofnest Falcon and love the quick wedge setup time, the low profile design, and t-slots along the perimeter. I’ve always had my eyes on the skycamp though and I’m so jealous of the angled ladder rungs!
You can buy the ladder for $147 plus shipping. I put one on my 23Zero Wakabout 62", bolted right up. It's slower to fold up than the 23Zero ladder, but I like angled steps for wife's barefeet :)
Man you always knock it out of the park on your videos! Thanks for taking the time!! Keep up the great work!!!!
I appreciate that!
Great overview/discussion! We have a hard shell Alpha RTT ourselves, a lot like the iKamper but a better price point for comparable overall quality imo. We've got a couple videos up of it and plan to do a more in depth walkaround soon. Always look forward to your content, thanks for sharing! 👍 -Josh
Each model has its pros and cons, but it seems to be a good tent because it is protected from harmful animals or harmful insects. Thank you for your detailed description of the tent. I'm glad to see your wonderful video again. From Woongkham, a South Korean UA-camr.
🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍
good to see ya back posting brother!
It's a good thing you pointed out the difference between Korea and China because it's a HUGE difference and I know people that think Asian Countries and people are all the same. Thanks for the killer content brother.
Yeah it's embarrassing how many Americans have no clue about the differences between the various major Asian countries...
@@LastLineOfDefense Well they should ! There is a world of difference between many of the Asian countries and cultures.
Thanks been looking for just this type of review on rooftop tents. Enjoy all of your videos.
Nice review, I just bought my first RTT - Smittybilt Gen 2 looking forward to testing it out.
This was actually very helpful. I appreciate the honesty. Thank you!
I can’t wait for the Superlite! Thanks for the hat code Mike!
When you put it away if it's raining, just put the cover on and the eight buckles, when you get home and the weather warms up or the rain stops you can open it up to dry so you don't get mold, and then you can put it away with a zipper
I was looking for reviews online couldn’t find any I’m glad I found this your the man bro 🤙🏼
Loved the comparison, will help us a lot! Thanks, man!
Ordered a GFC superlite 2 weeks ago!
I picked up the ikamper x-cover! Fantastic! Just waiting for my claymore lights to arrive!
Freespirit Recreation 55" Odyssey is my go to..... great vid!
I love your honesty! Great video and great info!
Thanks for the info...been following you for a while and my wife and I just got our bed rack and roof rack and are narrowing down our RTT. We are only considering hard-shell RTTs after doing our research, and this adds a little more knowledge to what we have already been researching on. I also ordered a couple LLOD items that are being delivered tomorrow...so I'm excited about that too :)
Ulovix FYI CVT is offering great discounts this week on most of their tents to include their Mt. Hood model. I recently got their new hybrid model and enjoy it. Good luck with your search.
@@jerrylunday9977 Thanks! I'm checking out the CVT website now...I always thought they were just building the soft-shell RTTs, never even thought to look to see if they started making the hard-shell RTTs.
So glad I found this video. Thanks, Mike! I'm in the market trying to decide which option of RTT is best for my '16 Jeep Compass. I was looking at a canvas Tepui but after watching this video it's off the list. I'm leaning heavily on the iKamper (didn't realize it was a Korean manufacturer). However, the Go Fast Superlite sounds interesting. It's pretty interesting that many Americans are not familiar with differences in Asian countries.
I bought the smittybilt overlander Gen 2. It's holding up great and I've used it over 30 times now and I bought the extender warranty through four wheel parts. So the warranty is now 5 years for the rooftop tent. It's definitely a great tent and been through all the seasons so far.
Any updates as of lately ?
THANK YOU ! HOPE YOU BOTH HAVE A GREAT HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃 DAY ! BE SAFE ! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS !
The 2019 Outdoor Expo West started out with a horrendous thunderstorm and winds of 50/60mph! The folks I was with were all fitted with rooftops of one kind or another. I have an old Ford Explorer 2Dr that I converted into a mini RV .. I sleep inside. The next morning all were gone .. and when one fellow finally showed up .. who had a gorgeous rooftop and awning .. I asked where they all went? Motel.
The beauty of the GFC is that i lug an 11 foot kayak around, and it'll pop up with that on the roof, love it. That being said, without the kayak, iKamper is the bomb, I like that it adds shelter underneath too.
Love the superlite...
After a hard look at the Skycamp mini for my Tacoma short-bed, I ended up going with a soft top from Treeline. Cost was not the dominant factor in this choice, as the 4 season Tamarack is pricey. What sold it for me is just how spacious it is, and how fully you can open it up and pretty much have 360 views (plus a wide open top). Not to mention it's cool and breezy in the summer while being 4-season ready and extra rugged for winter. Yes, the zipper is a pain, but so far that's the only drawback I've found.
You should do a comparison video with setting up the various rooftop tents vs a ground tent.
Hi
Thanks for your experiences that you share with us
Nice job
Good luck
Can you do an inside tour of your RTT setups? (bedding, lights, electronics, etc) Thanks!
We have 72" 23Zero walkabout series. I can't imagine fitting wife and 7 year old daughter in a wedge style comfortably. I feel like the quality of materials and craftmanship is top notch compared to other soft shell tents, but the struggle is real with the setup and takedown, especially when rolling in late and wanting to pack up and move on in the morning. I've been intrigued by the iCampers for a while.
The cut down in ventilation of the clamshell is not talked about, but real! I"ll take my Walkabout any day over any of the IKamper tents. We have the 62 and wife, dog, heater, etc fit comfortably. That LST fabric is industry best along with the mattress. I've read many complaints about IKamper sleep quality. I'm with you, a little quicker set up is nice, but not for the losses of ventilation, star gazing ability, LST fabric, mattress comfort, PRICE, etc.
Thanks Mike, nice comparo!
I was digging on the iKamper because it's cool but also because it's Korean. As I'm half Korean too and I always wondered what nationality you were. Pretty cool to learn.
Very helpful video thank you!
Great review, I like the Ikamper model. I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler I want to get a tent on it.
Nice comparison video, been a toss up between and ikamper and ROAM for me.
Awesome informative video. What do you think of the rectangle hardshell style roof top tents?
Hey Mike - Thanks for the video! How tall is your garage? It's impressive that all your vehicles fit in there including the LC lol. Looks like a tight squeeze.
Love your channel man ! Just curious would you be able to tell me how high the gfc tent would be from the fj80 rain gutter ? I’m trying to see if it will fit in my garage as well
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I’m leaning now towards icamper
I’ve liked the Skycamp mini ever since you’ve gotten it. If I had a shorter bed that would be the set up. I might do a wedge or Skycamp full size of I get a SUV
Nice video. I figure it’s snowing in Colorado currently. Any chance for a winter ❄️ Weekenderlander episode?
If front runner made some taller bed bars you could throw a GFC superlite and have it hangover the cab. Thinking about going that route. I really want that super lite. Hopefully won't feel that 70 to 80 pounds while wheeling.
The new freespirit evolution hard top looks really promising! Be really cool if they would send you one out to test haha. Loving your videos keep them coming
IKamper it is! Picking one up in about a month or two.
I don’t know if you fully represented the canvas tents. It’s personal I get it, but I love mine and it gives me the ability to have head room, low bed rack, and also I can have two people and my dogs in there(large and small dog). I also store my sleeping bags, pillows, and two blankets inside at all times. Hard shell pop up tents (all four corners pop up) could be half rack mounted then those would be ideal in my mind.
Love your videos
Thanks for watching!
Margins are low they say but production is backed up til 2022🤣😂😅. Great video. Truly informative and thanks for sharing as always. Patiently waiting on my GFC Camper for my Taco. Great products!!!
Very cool tents and video. Thank you for sharing.
However, why can’t I find any rooftop tents that open out on both sides of the vehicle, offering more room? And two entrances?
thanks for showing the differences
People always forget to mention you need to check the load your vehicle can carry on the roof before installing. Some vehicles rating is below the weight of the tent and then you add two people to that you could be setting yourself up for some expensive troubles down the road.
Seriously considering the James Baroud RTT
I have a big Guana Wanaka softshell tent. It's huge, well made...but so slow to setup and take down. I'm seriously looking at a Falcon XL for speed of setup.
It really depends on what vehicle you have in my opinion. iKamper mini for Tacomas all day long.
just curious since im fairly new subscriber to you. what do you do for work? I love that you drive Toyota we need more of those on youtube. I hope to slowly but surely go from my rav4 to a tacoma overlander.
To mount the ikamper, I assume you had to drill into the diamondback cover in order to attach the load rack?
Good video and comparison
Sounds like square footage wise the Soft body or iKamper style is the way to go. With you and Ash and the dog(s) what's been the roomiest? We will be fitting one dog (for now) and don't want to be too cramped while camping.
Can you fold up each tent with sleeping bags and pillows in them? Is there any room for even extra blankets or clothes laying flat? Never used one or hear about extra space in them when folded up
I am converting my 2005 LC to a camping rig. Want to replace my factory rack it’s old an I am afraid to put a roof top tent on it. What rack should,I look at? Your vids are great. Thank you
Thanks bro
I love my Roofnest Falcon wedge
Which one is best insulated and Is good for winter camping in those colder temperatures?
How do these tents compare in heavy weather? Which are the warmest and are there accessories to enhance their warmth? In terms of weather, think wind, rain, snow, and blowing sand or debris.
i feel like getting a RTT makes sense if you have a spare truck or SUV that you can dedicate to just camping and overlanding. Otherwise, since I only have 1 Jeep - which I use as my main driving car and I need as much MPG as i can get since i am regularly driving an hour back and forth to visit family. Buying a RTT doesn’t make a lot of sense for me right now. I am so worried about the weight + lugging it over a lot of miles for my daily, weekly drives. But if I ever am able to get my hands on a 2nd SUV - I will for sure get a RTT to mount to one of my vehicles!
Can you do a comparison video between Freespirit Recreation Odyssey VS Roofnest Falcon? -Thanks
How dark is it in the iKamper? I am looking for a Dark minimal to no sunlight inside when closed. CVT Mt Hood and 23Zero both have a setup like that but I like how iKamper is configured
Just in time for black Friday sales.... My bank account doesn't thank you.
I have the iKamper Skycamp 2. I had it on my list for a long time but was rolling with one of those cheaper models. One day the thing folded up on the gf in a wind storm. That was the end of that, placed the order for the iKamper the next day, never looked back. 🤙 I just wish the mattress was a bit more comfy
Haha I've heard stories of crazy winds folding up those other kinds.
@@LastLineOfDefense i had already retreated to the truck, she was touching it out. About 4am I hear scream "ahhh help" Thjng was folded up..😬 I literally had to exhilarat her from that sucker. Haha 😄
Am I the only one watching these rooftop tent videos while sitting in a sedan 😎 dude love your videos 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thoughts on 23zero or any experience with them?
Looks like the ikamper mini would be a good option for Jeep TJs. Does anyone have one on their TJs? Photos?
You said GFC can hold two adults and a small child. Is it the same for ikamper mini as well? Is the ikamper mini slightly bigger than the GFC wedge tent?
Can you do a video comparing the roof tops to trailers?
Does anybody have any alternatives to the Ikamper mini? I need that style of tent but can only find this one and Roofnest Condor. Those two tests are stupidly expensive so wanting something cheaper
I ditched the RTT, ARB and Nest SOLD. Fade. Bought Coleman 10x10 Instant-up. Used in 46- states and through Canada, twice in 50mph winds. T4R has all rear seats removed made into mini rv w/ bed for bear county throughout Dalton and Dempster or quick naps etc. Tent so much easier, roomier. Cost$130.00. Bought lots of fuel for cost difference.
Great info 👍🔥🔥💙👊😎🐕🐕
Do you know of any good mattresses that’ll fit in the superlite that’s not GFC mattress?
I just ordered a Roam Vagabond for black friday. Saved so much money which is great as I don't have the biggest budget. I will say that if I had to choose one to buy, it would be the iKamper. Ever since I watched you first test it I loved the functionality, but the price is way too steep for me right now.
How’s your room vagabond been these couple of years
Here is the money question for me, community please chime in. If money or waiting for production (they are both on backorder) was not an issue which do you buy. RoofNest Falcon, GFC V2 or the Ikamper Xcover. I have a Gen 3 4Runner and I need the crossbars for a kayak. I am considering some accessories like canopy's as well. Thanks in advance.
Mike - do you have any experience with either of the Tuff Stuff Alpha RTTs? I’m leaning towards the Alpha II for my new Ranger setup.
Nope. Looks like another company that took the iKamper Skycamp design (not that that's a bad thing, since I love the Skycamp) - but I haven't tried out the Tuff Stuff.
I love this channel man, if I were to make a YT channel it would be laid back and content like this....I hope you do a meet up next year! Your part of the country is so beautiful ...
Sorry, but we’re full. No room for visitors.
@@Ratchetanium you can't stop me lol
Any of these ok to put on a Leer camper top?
CVT mt hood has the same c channel style, crossbars can handle 100lbs
Can you do a review of your current light setup ??
Yup! Coming very soon!
@@LastLineOfDefense thank you! I need it ASAP
I want that ikamper
Love your videos👍
Question: Will the Skycamp or GFC tent close while u sleeping if the back of the tent facing strong wind like 20-25 meters per second??
Either should be fine, but iKamper actually comes with a little device to lock out the strut as well.
@@LastLineOfDefense Thank you for your reply. Your videos are great
What is that ladder on the middle truck?
Nice vid mate. How does the vertical pop up design compare? -You know, a bit like the wedge but with both ends popping up to create a box. It's all I can get in India. Same pros and cons as the wedge, but more headroom and a touch less stable in wind?
So the pop straight up designs (typically) offer less headroom actually, but more 'headroom' for your feet area, as they don't typically peak as high as a wedge. Setup is (usually) a little slower on the pop straight up ones, and I'm honestly not sure about the wind, as I've never used one - but I assume, they potentially are a little louder in the wind, but I'm not sure.
Great video! One thing that’s been keeping me from buying a RTT is their weight. I don’t want to keep the RTT on my daily driver. What do you recommend for a daily driver? I have a GX460.
Softtop is lighter and easier to take off if not in use
I have a short bed 2021 Tacoma, aaaand a family of 4 (me, wife and a 4yo and a 2yo kids) I’m looking for the cat rainier, and i was wondering if would fit in the short bed???
Since you've had both setups, would you recommend the Diamondback HD w/ 2 Front Runner bars or the SE w/ 3 bars for iKamper mini? Seems the HD might be overkill and unnecessarily heavier? Would appreciate thoughts as I'm looking to order.
SE with 2 bars would be fine
@@LastLineOfDefense Thanks for the insight, super helpful. Keep up with the great content and be well!
It would cool if you can climb from your sun roof to the inside of tent from inside the vehicle
long video with a lot of info...thanks. Most people will not have the resources to view all of those variations or know the pros and cons. Thanks for the info.
I had a 3-4 person soft top and absolutely hated it. Throwing the cover over the tent, orientating it, and zipping it up every time you break down was a real pain.
I just went back to ground tents and bought a gazelle
But ground tents are any easier or faster though.
@@MountainManGuy true, but you don’t necessarily have to pack up camp to hit the trails with a ground tent. For my uses, I’m leaning towards basic trailer with a rack tor a RTT.
Did you shoot this on the r5 or r6?
