I forget which philosophers debated the topic, but the idea was that there were two important concepts when considering "truth".
      - To believe as many true things as possible.
      - To not believe as many false things as possible.
So which is more important? One held that the most important was to believe as many true things as possible, and to consider new information as true by default ONLY IF it was time-sensitive. For example, if you got an opportunity to travel with a famous musician for a month but you needed to be on a plane in half an hour to do so, that would be something you should assume to be true and make your choices based on that assumption.
The other felt that it was more important to not believe new information as true until it can be verified, regardless of time pressures. The idea being that if you accepted false information as true in order to act on time-sensitive issues, the damage could be greater than any potential gains if the information were actually true. To use the previous example, if that opportunity was actually a scam to strip your bank account and steal your identity, obviously that is worse damage than potentially missing that opportunity had it been real.
Neither thought it was good to assume new information as true in cases where time pressures were not an issue. And yet, so often in the rush to be first and in the know, countless people are conned into non time-sensitive acceptance of relatively non-important information. Unfortunately, that kind of critical thinking and thought process are incredibly rare these days.

Same thing happened a few days ago immediately after the attack on the Christmas market in eastern Germany.
Soon turned out, the guy was mentally ill and went off the deep end after authorities ignored prior warnings because the agency in question didn't consider itself responsible and instead of contacting the right one, they just told the person reporting it they'd have to repeat those steps somewhere else.

I’ve been watching the channel for years. Even before that I got fed up with the phrase “breaking news”. Only to find out hours or days later that the “news” was inaccurate and that being the first to report it was more important than getting it right. It’s only gotten worse since, especially on line. I heard about the New Orleans incident yesterday but waited for Belle and a couple others before I paid attention. Thanks to the crew for actually informing us. ( on the somewhat petty side of the situation, I have always been extremely annoyed when one of the few television programs I enjoy is interrupted by “breaking news” that has absolutely no emergent information that couldn’t wait until the next news program). 🤬
Next up…waiting to hear real news about Las Vegas.
