The forerunners of the American cowboy were the Mexicans who raised cattle in the area of present-day Texas, since its introduction in the 16th century, with the arrival of the Spanish. The domesticated animals were the specimens known as longhorns (named for their elongated horns), which roamed in a semi-wild state. The first Texan settlers started the open ranch system known as haciendas. The main economic activity was the raising of cattle that provided fat to make candles and also leather; agriculture was also of importance. Also, the gear appeared to be used by the new American colonizers. In California there were also skilled men on horseback, according to Richard Henry Dana, who wrote a book about that region in 1840 when it still belonged to Mexico. He as he describes:
When they go on long days, they ride one horse until they tire it and grab another, throw the saddle and bridle on it, and after exhausting the animal, they take a third, and so on until the end of the trip. There are no better riders in the world.
