I grew up in Chicago and I hate the cold so I always dreamed about living in LA or Miami. As of now, I have lived in LA for 6 years, Miami for 3 years and New York for 2 years. After living for years in all four Chi, LA, NYC, and MIA, I have to honestly say Chicago is by far the cleanest, best organized, and best overall city in all of America. I never knew how lucky I was to grow up there. Miami always felt like a tiny resort town to me and I hated the unbearably humid summers and yearly hurricanes. Summer is my favorite season and it sucked in Miami. LA is more of a giant suburb than it is a city and the perfect weather actually gets boring and the lack of rain makes everything feel and look stale and dusty. When there were fires it would rain down ash from the orange skies and it seemed apocalyptic to me. Thank god I have a car cause I can't imagine living in LA without one as the public transport here is a joke. New York and Chicago are the only real cities in America as the late Anthony Bourdain said. New York was like Chicago on steroids in an annoying way to me. Way too much hype for what it is and it's filthy and way too crowded compared to Chicago. Who wants to wait in a 1 hour line for a bagel? The beaches in NYC can't compare to the crystal clear Lake beaches in Chicago in summer. Chicago is the most fun and active city in the summer in all of America with the best summer time beaches and the lake shore urban beaches and parks beat Central Park. I would put it this way, New York is the most overrated city in America, while Chicago is the most underrated.

I know many people who have moved from NYC to Chicago and almost all of them prefer Chicago.They consistently say it has everything and it is so much easier to live in Chicago. I like them both, but NYC is unbelievably expensive and much more congested and dirty.
I've never been to New York, let alone resided there. I can't imagine living in New York and wouldn't want to live in any of Chicagoland's more crime-infested areas, but in my humble opinion, Chicago is "my kinda town."

I had a friend, born in Florida. She moved to California. Left California for NYC, left NYC for Minnesota. She left Minnesota and moved to Chicago. She was into theatre, acting as well as going to see live theatre. She said she loved Chicago way more than NYC. She said, it just felt better, just offered more. She said she was there to stay. Unfortunately she did end up leaving. She left to care for her father back in Florida.

It never leaves you. I love the best it has to offer and hate the worst it has to offer. Surprisingly, though, I really do believe that the greatest city on the continent isn't in the US but, rather, Canada. I was blown away by Montreal when I was there decades ago... and UA-cam videos show it has only gotten better. To see what I mean, check out a video called "The Montreal Metro is a Masterpiece" and some of the other touristy videos. Sigh. But there is more to life than beatiful, sophisticated, crime-free locations. Home is where loved ones and memories are.
Every city has some level of crime in the USA, however; the crimes are mainly from the Millennial, Generation Z and Generation A. The crime is mainly gang related. Overall, Spike Lee started this BEEF with making the movie Chi-Raq. Like NYC, but the Quality, Cleanliness and BEAUTY OF CHICAGO ILLINOIS with its NATURAL BEACHES THROUGHOUT THE CITIES AND SHORELINE SUBURBS, "WIN."
@@rdsims8809 I agree about the overall quality and cleanliness of Chicago winning, but when it comes to the crime - particularly in certain Chicago neighborhoods, the crime is so bad that it blows Chicago's overall crime statistics out of the water and into the stratosphere. It is more than just a matter of opinion or perspective, it's a fact (unfortunately) that stains the reputation of Chicago as a whole. And even though you talk about certain generations' involvement, it might be more appropriate to identify the sub-demographic groups of that generation. I know it might be painful to do, but in order to fix the problem, Chicago has to target where it originates (and identify why). It ain't the Libertyville Gen-Zers jumping up and down on cars in the Loop, after all. I am from Chicagoland (and I still miss the pizza and hot dogs) but have lived most of my life in Phoenix, the fifth largest city in the country, which has its own problems with crime. For what it is worth from a guy with no dog (or hot dog) in the fight, I think Chicago is far superior to Phoenix in almost every way. At least your beaches have water.

In my opinion, Chicago streets are much cleaner and nicer looking than of NYC. The only downside is the public transportation. It's outdated, old and dirty.

So I’m sure NYC has better public transportation if 78% of its population uses it regularly. But how do they not have a train that goes directly to LaGuardia? Thats ridiculous. Chicago’s transit line goes to both Midway and O’Hare. Just saying….

Ech city has advantages and disadvantages. My take: Food-NYC better, beauty-Chicago better, cost of living-Chicago and much more affordable for decent housing, transportation-public is better in NYC but chicago travel times are much less, culture-both are good but NYC is better, crime-it appears NYC is better but chicago seems to get worse publicity than it deserves. vibrancy NYC is much more active but that can be a disadvantage. Over all ease of living or more livable- Chicago without a doubt. I would say overall I would choose chicago. its much easier to live there and has enough of all the amenities that big city lovers require.

I spent the first 25 years of my life in NYC and still have family I visit regularly there and have lived in Chicago for the past 20 years, so i consider myself native level fluent in both cities. I missed NYC when I first moved to Chicago, but after a couple of years I came to realize that my life in Chicago no longer translates to NYC. My mortgage for a four bedroom home in Wicker Park (which is similar to a hybrid of Williamsburg, Park Slope and East Village) is only slightly higher than my rent for a one bedroom walk up on the Upper East Side. And Wicker Park is a far more progressive neighborhood than dull UES. The smallest bedroom in my house is the same size as the bedroom I had in Manhattan, and I turned that bedroom into my closet. I literally have too much stuff to ever return to NYC because no home in an equivalent neighborhood is large enough to accommodate me anymore. Maybe a $10 million brownstone in Brooklyn Heights or $25 million brownstone in Greenwich Village? My home has a garden, roof deck, backyard, but here's the best part - I'm STILL within walking distance of everything from sushi to Indian food to live music venues to clubs. I haven't had to give up much of anything about what I loved about living in NYC to have all of this in Chicago and a whole lot more. I'd have to give up 75% of my worldly possessions to find a place to move back to in NYC. Yeah NYC may have more "stuff" but let's be honest, here. Most people living (not visiting, LIVING) are too busy hustling to afford their studio apartment to take advantage of half the stuff they brag about having access to in NYC. Don't lie to me because I was one of you. You've been to Joe's once since you moved here. You still haven't been able to get reservations to any of the top restaurants yet. You can count on one hand the number of times you've hung out in any part of NYC other than your own borough or below 59th street in Manhattan. You only go to Katz's to flex when your friends or family are in town. And you still haven't gotten around to seeing a Broadway play, ballet, or the symphony. You spend your average weekend doing the same thing most people in most cities do - you join your local gym, meet your friends at the closest bar on your block, get General Tso's chicken on DoorDash, and watch Netflix while eating it. Your life would translate just fine in Chicago. For a good chunk of you, your life would translate just fine in Cleveland. Posers.
My life translates just fine in Bloomington-Normal. In the summers I take a mini vacation to Chicagoland. I stay in a hotel out in Naperville and take the Metra in during the days
I would say neither are good to live in for less wealthy people as large cities are expensive. New York may be in a prettier more coastal area yet the problem with New York is that it is even more expensive. So if you are not that well off in Chicago and moved to New York you would be in an even worse position
I love Chicago but I am not sure if I will feel safe enough as a young woman going there instead of NY. I don’t think that I would ever recover if I ended up being a victim of robber with sexual assault

Chicago doesn't even make the Top 5 or 10 on the FBI page. The crime is in certain areas. I'm originally from Chicago and have lived in NYC there is no comparison at all and I don't see how anyone thinks the two have any similarities?? It's a huge reach! I don't think you've been to Chicago. It's only certain areas. The whole city isn't dangerous. I lived in NYC total 6 years and in originally from Chicago (not suburbs) The city is clean and beautiful! We get plenty of tourist from World wide everyday! People are still moving to Chicago and young people are coming for College as well. There's way more to do in Chicago than NYC and you can afford it. Stay away from certain areas that's it!

Chicago definitely isn't slow paced, just not as fast paced as NYC maybe, but right on par or a faster pace than most cities in the U.S.

In my opinion, Chicago streets are much cleaner and nicer looking than of NYC. The only downside is the public transportation. It's outdated, old and dirty.

So I’m sure NYC has better public transportation if 78% of its population uses it regularly. But how do they not have a train that goes directly to LaGuardia? Thats ridiculous. Chicago’s transit line goes to both Midway and O’Hare. Just saying….

Chicago is just as nice. Just watch out for yourself… like every other place. I’m buying in Oak Park or Evanston. Any thoughts on new construction or newer homes and condos? Also, the more liberal and educated parts of town would be nice. Thanks!

Ech city has advantages and disadvantages. My take: Food-NYC better, beauty-Chicago better, cost of living-Chicago and much more affordable for decent housing, transportation-public is better in NYC but chicago travel times are much less, culture-both are good but NYC is better, crime-it appears NYC is better but chicago seems to get worse publicity than it deserves. vibrancy NYC is much more active but that can be a disadvantage. Over all ease of living or more livable- Chicago without a doubt. I would say overall I would choose chicago. its much easier to live there and has enough of all the amenities that big city lovers require.

I spent the first 25 years of my life in NYC and still have family I visit regularly there and have lived in Chicago for the past 20 years, so i consider myself native level fluent in both cities.
I missed NYC when I first moved to Chicago, but after a couple of years I came to realize that my life in Chicago no longer translates to NYC. My mortgage for a four bedroom home in Wicker Park (which is similar to a hybrid of Williamsburg, Park Slope and East Village) is only slightly higher than my rent for a one bedroom walk up on the Upper East Side. And Wicker Park is a far more progressive neighborhood than dull UES.
The smallest bedroom in my house is the same size as the bedroom I had in Manhattan, and I turned that bedroom into my closet. I literally have too much stuff to ever return to NYC because no home in an equivalent neighborhood is large enough to accommodate me anymore. Maybe a $10 million brownstone in Brooklyn Heights or $25 million brownstone in Greenwich Village?
My home has a garden, roof deck, backyard, but here's the best part - I'm STILL within walking distance of everything from sushi to Indian food to live music venues to clubs. I haven't had to give up much of anything about what I loved about living in NYC to have all of this in Chicago and a whole lot more. I'd have to give up 75% of my worldly possessions to find a place to move back to in NYC.
Yeah NYC may have more "stuff" but let's be honest, here. Most people living (not visiting, LIVING) are too busy hustling to afford their studio apartment to take advantage of half the stuff they brag about having access to in NYC.
Don't lie to me because I was one of you. You've been to Joe's once since you moved here. You still haven't been able to get reservations to any of the top restaurants yet. You can count on one hand the number of times you've hung out in any part of NYC other than your own borough or below 59th street in Manhattan. You only go to Katz's to flex when your friends or family are in town. And you still haven't gotten around to seeing a Broadway play, ballet, or the symphony. You spend your average weekend doing the same thing most people in most cities do - you join your local gym, meet your friends at the closest bar on your block, get General Tso's chicken on DoorDash, and watch Netflix while eating it.
Your life would translate just fine in Chicago. For a good chunk of you, your life would translate just fine in Cleveland.

My life translates just fine in Bloomington-Normal. In the summers I take a mini vacation to Chicagoland. I stay in a hotel out in Naperville and take the Metra in during the days
I would say neither are good to live in for less wealthy people as large cities are expensive. New York may be in a prettier more coastal area yet the problem with New York is that it is even more expensive. So if you are not that well off in Chicago and moved to New York you would be in an even worse position
I love Chicago but I am not sure if I will feel safe enough as a young woman going there instead of NY. I don’t think that I would ever recover if I ended up being a victim of robber with sexual assault

Why do they always have to compare Chicago with New York, you can compare Chicago with any other state like LA, Miami, Texas ,etc why always with New York, I hate when they compare Chicago with New York especially when they talk about the crime in Chicago, saying that it has the worst crime than in any other state, I think L.A. and New York have bad crimes too with alot of gangstersters in those cities, theres crime everywhere in the world not just Chicago, okay stop putting Chicago as a bad city 😠😭

For some reason, Americans are fascinated with comparing their own large cities, stirring up drama and creating needless tribalism. Both Chicago and NYC are great cities with different vibes and culture. One is not better than the other. They're just different and people move to different cities for different reasons.

Chicago doesn't even make the Top 5 or 10 on the FBI page. The crime is in certain areas. I'm originally from Chicago and have lived in NYC there is no comparison at all and I don't see how anyone thinks the two have any similarities?? It's a huge reach! I don't think you've been to Chicago. It's only certain areas. The whole city isn't dangerous. I lived in NYC total 6 years and in originally from Chicago (not suburbs) The city is clean and beautiful! We get plenty of tourist from World wide everyday! People are still moving to Chicago and young people are coming for College as well. There's way more to do in Chicago than NYC and you can afford it. Stay away from certain areas that's it!

no big city in america can compete with new york. chicagoland is flat and kind of boring to be honest. little natural beauty in cook county. only a handful of big cities are worth visiting and spending money as a tourist. chicago is not that interesting when you remove the tall buildings.
Dirty streets, excessive congestion both pedestrian and streets, excessive rent prices, dirty beaches, views are less appealing in New York. I’ll take Chicago any day.
