SFM's kind of a weird fringe case, since technically it *is* just a repurposed game engine... but also, there's a lot of shit built on top of it and no actual necessity for anything to actually *function like a game,* so in practice it behaves far more like a very janky 3D animation tool than like an actual game engine. So yeah, next level is right.
You are aware that you've hand-crafted a huge chunk of Halo 1's content solo, right? Designing, modeling, animating, levels, scripting, networking and even a bit of playtesting and SFX. I think the gaps between your videos are less so "hey guys sorry for the delay" and more like "I've recreated a significant portion of a premiere Xbox title myself in notepad, audacity and 3DS Max". You should be incredibly proud of the work you've done, 20 years ago nearly no one had this kind of cross-discipline ability, and here you are now pulling it off and even making UA-cam content with it. Not to say you alone could replace an entire dev team in the early 2000's, but your mastery of their workflows really shows here, and it's seriously amazing. I hope you can continue doing what you love here sustainably or have a studio notice your work!
Apologizing for a 6 month gap is crazy my dude, I'm surprised something this well made was produced that quickly! I hope you're proud of yourself, this looks like a ton of fun and I can't wait to try it out soon.
Dude… I had NO idea you did that halo vtuber AND Vinny’s meat man in post. It is honestly impressive the shit you do for your vids, man. Not to mention how much love you put into the modded content itself. It’s inspiring to see how much work you actually do for… what you do XD
The in-engine cutscene stuff you mentioned for the UA-cam video is actually pretty unique and why I love your content. The only other time I can think of someone doing something similar was Albino and his Game and Watch video. Something about putting in that effort really inspires me to do more, excited to see what you create next! :D
Accursed Farms's Civil Protection series is made of in-engine HL2 cutscenes too. One of the main reasons Ross stopped making them is that it's a major pain in the ass to do it this way, even more so than in GMod and SFM.
The fact that you had to go through pains only attested to in Dante's Inferno just for video game shitposts truly proves that you are the inferno of all time. Much love my guy, keep up the fantabulous work.
"What's worse than Jackals? Jackals with Diamond Swords" ~Chippy Dubman, Probably. Seriously I never thought I would meet something more terrifying than Sniper Jackals. 33:21 -> The Original XBOX has 64 MB of RAM, it's pretty low
Hey man, I know you said its a lot of time and effort to do the scripting and cutscenes you do. But it is absolutely amazing and very unique, it makes your videos a blast to watch. Ive been a huge fan since Mario BR and having you as the forefront to the Halo modding scene is nothing less than fantastic.
That one map gave me an idea for a very unique twist for your Kart Maps! Instead of Mirror Mode we have Upside Down Mode. It would improve the Halo Kart experience 100 times as a single mistake could send you ascending to your death. Thankfully no one is evil enough to do this and subject others to it. Otherwise I'd live in fear every waking moment.
I only played through it on legendary once, I had no idea Johnson actually could be there running around with you in the Library and how much effort that it took. I'll have to go back and replay that now
I'm glad you took time to recover from burn out rather than just kept grinding on, I hope you'll be kinder on yourself on future projects, looking forward to all your future content
💚Thank you, InfernoPlus❤️ My friend and I just played thru cursed Halo CE - best experience I’ve had in a long time! The little meme detail in everything from the Mario Kart races to the commander shooting himself with a reverse pistol, every detail appreciated in full Because You see I have never played halo before I’ve never played a shooter game before This was my first halo experience And I was HOOKED TONS of love to you, InfernoPlus! It helps that Inferno has been modding halo for a damn long time. But even so, you're always learning in this hobby. Keep at it though, halos mod scene has fostered so many skilled people that are now out in the games industry. 18:14
Dude I fucking love these. They are so useful for how to conceptualize solutions and troubleshoot/resolve bugs during software development, especially game dev since it's a more creative programming medium. But I feel like much of this applies to all software in general too.
Seeing all the new content has been incredible. there's a part of me that really wishes that unarmed friendly spawns would pick up nearby weapons and defend themselves, or that you could get allies with a randomly selected weapon for the extra cursed funsies.
I just want to start off by sayin I absolutely love these dev talk videos. I am a nerd through and through, the more info the merrier - so thank you. I did want to ask: how are the "avatars" synced up, per-se? I assume that the avatars are lip syncing and changing in real time with the stream. My first thought is you both have to capture another halo client rendering those but I doubt that's it. Just curious is all! I am always surprised by your voodoo magic skills.
@@InfernoPlus Do you mean after-the-fact like the model was just edited in over your gameplay footage for the video, and not a live v-tuber kind of thing during a stream?
You know for whatever reason I thought that the ring dance thing was an emote, but I didn't think it would be an actual entity that performed the action when spawned followed by the warthog shower. That's pretty damn cool actually
If you ever get around to halo 3, a minor idea i've hade would be to make the multiplayer map 'Narrow' into a map called 'Wide' or 'Broad' where the map is streched and squashed to be as wide as it is long, and as long as it is wide. No other feature, everything would look streched as well.
Every time he goes "unfortunately I can't do X because of the game engine" I have conflicting feelings between "Aw that's a shame" and "Thank God we have been spared from another brain torture"
You make me launch way more than I am use to on youtube. Not sure why, maybe because I am a programmer myself and you explain de problem so honestly. Anyway, Love you work
Dude you are a mad man. I don't know how you can code, animate, and trouble shoot all this for Halo 1. Its amazing to see you single handley do this. I wonder how the old Bungie developers would react to this mod. They would probably the same short cuts they used to program ai, hid stuff in cutscenes, and make maps just barely work. Can't wait to play some cursed halo multiplayer
I love seeing these breakdowns but they also give me flashbacks to my awful 3d animation course. It was such a mess the university scrapped it entirely
At some point there needs to be straight up fight moves from Oni (complete with enthusiastic yelling the name of the attack). Cursed halo has already started its journey down this path...
So you describing the checkpoints on the Kart levels and how you could speedrun them is actually really funny because that's more or less how actual Mario Kart and actual Mario Kart speedruns work.
Absolutely love the technical videos, I usually rewatch the gameplay ones afterwards too. For the D20 grenades, it's be an absolute faff, but would it be possible to create a grenade pool for them (like the plasma weapon spawns) where each grenade is set in what it does but it chooses grenade spawns in at random each time? ( I really hope that makes sense) (also I'm not suggesting you do this as it sounds like a nightmare I just wonder if it'd be possible)
The best you can really do with D20 in multiplayer is have it deal random damage/knockback/stun/flashbang. I decided to go with TNT + Minihogs because I felt they were more fun.
The problem with elites not firing sounds like an issue with the elite ai code. What its probably doing is trying to calculate the projectile travel time to hit the player in order to aim, however firing backwards on a moving vehicle is probably returning a negative value which it has no idea what to do with.
I wonder if you could make Chiron multiplayer map without the teleporters, connecting the rooms normally. Looks like you could remove most of the hallways, but the room with teleporters on the second floor (red flag room) would require adding a hallway since.
You had no need to voice those cutscenes in the files, you could have just dubbed them for your youtube video. But that's what you do. And that's amazing. Thanks dad.
My issues with blue shells came when I went through the game with the Boom skull on. I basically had to get lucky and hope that the AI didnt get shells since for whatever reason, I didn't make the connection between how far ahead I was and when blue shells appeared
Is it possible that the enemies not being able to shoot backwards issue in halokart is related to vehicle speed vs projectile speed, possibly complicated by trying to aim at moving targets? If the shooter's motion vector is applied to the projectile's vector at firing, and/or accounts for the target's vector, then maybe it's giving results in the "shoot backwards relative to motion" case that the aiming code can't turn into a firing solution, e.g., due to a component it can't handle when it's negative value, or over some threshold? No idea about the underlying code here, just spitballing.
Seeing some of the logic in that scripting physically pains me. I understand completely why you have to do it that way, I've done that kind of shit myself, it does not make it any less painful to look at. You are an unfathomably powerful being.
I would love more videos looking at your scripting. I sympathize with your plights ha, I work professionally in these kinds of proprietary game scripting languages so every day is filled with making it do these kinds of backflips 😂
19:25 so you may not have a nice mechanical way of conveying the mechanic. But what about less elegant ways, like a hologram saying "headshots only" as a part of the gun's equip animation?
I don't think there's much need for apology when developing with these tools, although the algorithm always has a gun to your head so I get the stress to push while fighting this old game
"sometimes when you go through a teleporter, you may go through 3"
It's not a bug, it's a feature.
This is Cursed Halo after all.
star trek transporter accident-ass bug
We're really thinking with portals now boys.
Meat V-tuber cam animated in engine is definitely Cursed, I'll give you that
I think it's not that uncommon to see SFM used for animated segments.
But using Halo 1 cutscenes is on a next level.
SFM's kind of a weird fringe case, since technically it *is* just a repurposed game engine... but also, there's a lot of shit built on top of it and no actual necessity for anything to actually *function like a game,* so in practice it behaves far more like a very janky 3D animation tool than like an actual game engine.
