I struggled to get the advanced tactics badge for a very long time, and I never thought of using an updraft. It did sort of look liked you deployed your elytra for a second. Maybe if you are not in elytra for a certain amount of time you can still get the badge.

What I did was hold space the whole time so elytra can never activate, I had to let go to time some jumps tho so I was unsure if I elytrad by accident or not. Dont think i did tho
