Im praying but your right hope is fading away , but in my opinion I believe he’s gone but I’m still keeping up hope I may not know him but he’s human too we all are , but reason why I’m saying I believe he’s gone is because we can’t survive the freezing temperature for that much time, but I’m praying he managed to find a way to find a way to be comfortable or try to seek help 🙏🏻
The other missing hiker went missing in Crystal lake ,AZUSA in mount islip and I’m not sure how but the trail is very sketchy I’ve been up there without snow and it’s very dangerous up there as well didn’t go to mount islip but it was another trail but the same path to go up there where the burn area is on the other mountain kinda but yeah trail is far too small so it’s easy to get lost and with covered snow yeah but I hope they’re both alive

You made the right decision by turning back. I hiked the Mt. Baldy Bowl Trail on Xmas Eve 🎄2022 with my dog. We got to the second saddle by 12:00. I thought it was too late to submit Baldy. We ate lunch and turned around for our safety. The trails had a lot of snow on Saturday. I can only imagine how much more snow there will be right now.
As a person born and raised in the south, I just don't see the temptation of climbing a mountain in that cold and snow...but, watching the video with the breathtaking views is awesome.

I went up the Baldy Bowl on 1/23/23. It got sketchy and spicy as we got closer to the top. Large section of 2-3 inches of snow that hid slabs of slippery ice…the worst part were the bowling size chunks of ice coming at us from the top at 40-60 miles an hour!
Yikes! I felt those hard slabs of ice underneath the soft snow even at the base of the bowl. You are brave to have climbed the bowl with these conditions. I climbed the bowl about a year ago under much more favorable conditions: ua-cam.com/video/yCz2bF6dCxg/v-deo.html
As one is coming down, if they do not see the sign at the top of the 4 switchbacks just beyond the rocks, they would head out to a dead end. If they were desperate, they may, try to go down right there. It is very sketchy in dry dirt, in snow would be death. I wonder if Julian Sands, make that mistake. I wonder if the flew around that point. They did say his phone pinged off the southwest point, that is where it would have been.
Very cool footage. I dont know your (Mountaineering) background, but keep in mind, absolute beginers (even those that cant claim the title of Mountaineer) accomplish great tasks without issue and some of the most accomplished and experienced Mountaineers we have seen are literally killed in mundane situations. In the mouuntains, you never know what will happen. Summer, Winter, Spring, Fall, the mountains have no mercy and are not forgiving.
Good for you, David. A real man doesn't take foolish risks. And a nature lover can experience the mountain simply by going to the trailhead and having a picnic in the car. Also, good for you for pointing out that going down is more dangerous than going up. A lot of people don't know that.

..SAME here. Beautiful place. We used to live in Whitefish, Mt..Big Mountain Resort area..about 30 minutes from Glacier Nat’l Park. Awesome place …loved it BUT WAAAY too many ‘out-of-staters’ were moving in and taking over the place, RUINING IT. Taxes were bad enough and starting to SKY ROCKET. Watching it get overrun was TERRIBLE, I mean that wholeheartedly too, just damn sad.
I live near the community of Mt Baldy and have hiked it a ton of times. This year is the worst I have ever seen. Me and my friends know to avoid Baldy in these conditions. The best winter hike on that mountain is right after the first Snow, and the most dangerous is after several snow falls. Be Safe!!!!
I wonder if Julian had his proper equipment with him. Being as experienced as people say he was I feel like he fell unexpectedly. But I feel like some people don't think they will get into trouble up there and it's just so easy. I've not been up there in over 29 years and it's still looks just as scary and daunting as I remember and I've hiked 14ners in Colorado that were less tedious.
I think he may have fallen near Baldy Bowl. That was where cellphone last ping. Even though they sent rescuers and did drome searches. In the heavy snow it may not show he there. Now with more snow he may not be found
People think it's walk in the park. We did Big Horn Peak 3 days ago and it is insanely gorgeous, but if one is not careful, mountains will take ones life.
The Ice House saddle to Big Horn peak, up or down, is pretty safe under just about any conditions. I've skied up and down that slope in blizzards. That's why we should keep it to ourselves. 😉
I believe Julian slipped and fell on the Devil's Backbone, which can be very dangerous in the winter season. Many hikers died on Devil's Backbone, or got lucky enough to get rescued.
I'm not sure if anyone knows which route he took. And to make matters worse, you could do an out and back or a loop and in different directions. An important reason to always let someone know your route beforehand.
My question is on January 15, they found his cell phone pinging. Bit he was reported missing on January 13. Where that last cellphone ping was is mostly where he at. I think he was looking for shelter and lost his way.
They only know what his cellphone ping was. He was alive past January 13. My question is from the parking lot to hiking up the ski lodge area. How much snow was on the ground and the weather. Could he still be found dead or alive

Yes, I've done this route in the winter many times, but this year conditions are icy. The bowl/chute route on the other hand is always a bit intimidating. I've done Rainier in the summer, but no way would I do it in the winter.
Mephisto UA-cam video he said he was hiking to help find Juilian Sands. He saw where someone slipped down. With all that snow how could anyone be found.
My best friend used to patrol at Baldy. Real double diamonds. He went for a hike one day and never came back. Years later we found some of his bones under Hell Gate cliffs right where he said he was going to hike. Alta ut. You could see the whole hike from his apartment between snowbird and alta.
Go to mount baldy ski resort when it dumps and ski off piste. Youll get a great dose of great skiing. Expert level stuff. Whenever you go backcountry skiing you will always encounter double black and even more difficult lines. Do not ever go backcountry skiing if you dont have crampons, skins, and you think resort double black diamonds are difficult.

Unless you have the proper equipment and experience using them. Crampons (not microspikes) and Ice Axe are a must, but one must also know how to use them.
ANYone and EVERYone SHOULD know their limits. BUT it’s just NOT that way in this life. Some make BAD, deadly decisions and some are just in the WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME…
It's easy to understand why people gravitate to Baldy in the winter. It's beautiful, it's more physically challenging, and you have to be smart. You can see it from nearly anywhere in the LA basin, a snow capped mountain range, just beckoning everyone. Unfortunately, not everyone should try to do this. And if it's not in your comfort zone/skill level, stay away.
Strange... I hiked up to Devil's Backbone last Thursday and didn't see a single helicopter, drone, snowmobile or human searching for the lost hikers, other than myself. My tracks were the only tracks. And there were slip marks at the top that I told the San Bernadino Sheriff's Department about. Funny, now everyone is hiking up looking and making videos. Smh...

That's because the search-and-rescue teams are too smart to know better than to risk their own lives going the Devil's Backbone when the snow and ice is bad. Too dangerous to risk their own lives.
The vid doesn’t show how very steep the slopes actually are. My first time was in 2019 on hard pack ice; stayed in the ski hut and made it to the top mid morning then to go back down its very easy to get disoriented and hit a dead end cliff fall. Rescue personnel die there , so give it a pass and be safe.
Yeah, it never looks as steep on video as it does in person. That's nice that you got to stay in the ski hut. I think it has been closed ever since the pandemic.
OK. Education is good. Your video however shows very easy terrain for someone who is experienced in the snow. For those who aren’t try something In summer or take a course
For people with enough experience I'm sure it is easy, but it's all relative. I would say under these conditions it can be done by intermediate to advanced skill, but definitely not novices.
Looking for a person in these conditions... it's a probability that he sought shelter and is hidden from view.... what a miserable endeavor.... And this is why you should have a weapon....and fire 3x into the air to mark your location every hour..... So very sad to loose a good man.
Instead of a weapon most people these days are carrying either a beacon or other gps device to let people know of their location. I'm not sure if Julian had one of these, but unfortunately since they can't find him I doubt that he did.
there was a storm the day he got lost plus the winds and lo viz made it imposible to fly the helo. I was part of the group that responded to the fatallity on jan 8th, she died waiting for the winds to die down for the helo to cable her up
People who have successfully climbed Mt Everest have lost their lives on Mt Baldy. People need to know their limits and even then there is still uncontrollable risk.

The deaths occur from either hiking with the right equipment and poor understanding of the mountains and conditions or poor/ no equipment. These mountains are hikeable and climbeable with the right equipment and understanding or experience. The dangers of Mt Baldy is easy access. There’s a lot of scaremongering going on because people who don’t have the skill can’t understand those that Do have the skill to be on Baldy. Bring ice axe , crampons and ropes and ice anchors. Do it if you know what you’re doing. People all over the world are climbing vastly more dangerous mountains in wayyy more extreme conditions without the constant fearmongering.
OMG, never seen someone so fearful. Watch some Everest videos and you'll see how silly this is. I've Summited Baldy several times. Grew up in blizzard conditions. This is literally a walk in the park. Yes, helmets, crampons and axe are smart. And getting back down before sunset a good idea. But, being that fearful in such perfect winter conditions was kind of silly.
It really depends on your experience level. But even then, there have been a few experienced people who have successfully climbed Everest and then died on Baldy.
If it's so dangerous they shouldn't let people hike it and if people do hike it they should have to have a location beacon. That would save a ton of taxpayers money on that search and any search.
I heard that they are working on having people require a permit to hike it in the winter months. The permit process should help make sure people are experienced and have the proper equipment.
It all depends on your experience and skill level. What I meant is that novices should stay away. If they shut it down, then the people with the expertise would be penalized unduly.
Judging by the tracks, many people have been hiking this trail. Not smart. There are plenty of places you can hike in the snow without endangering your life. Or others lives.
Yeah, the steepness where I turned around was about the same as what I had already done past the rock garden, but the difference was in the snow. On the ridge the snow had turned to ice from the wind blowing on it.
@@davidfeiler1279 even though it is icy wouldn’t you just step harder and secure your position with an axe (assuming you had one) or am I missing something? That’s what I do when it gets icy. I’m asking because I’m planning to do the route you just did this coming weekend.
@Durzo Blint you are 100% correct. But that is for going up. Coming down is a very different story. Facing forward down a steep icy incline is something I am not comfortable with. When the snow is soft you can mash your foot in to the powder to secure your footing, but when it is hard and icy it is tricky.
@@davidfeiler1279 okay, this is not something I am familiar with. The other times when I’ve done Baldy in the winter I am able to walk down it (with caution) but with relatively no issue. In the current conditions I would have to descend backwards securing every step? I did Ontario peak last week and it was dreadful since we had to break trail for the whole route but no underlying ice to worry about when descending. I guess what I’m getting at is I want to do Baldy this Sunday and have yet to encounter a situation where I wanted to turn around. These conditions I see in your video are new to me so I’m asking what should I be looking for when I go for my attempt.
Looks beautiful but I am getting vertigo just watching this. Sad for Julian Sands but you can probably guess what happened on such an icy terrain. I really don't think there can be any hope now. The rescue searches seem to have been cut back now as well.🥲

There had been a few bad slides on the top the week Julian disappeared including a female climber who sadly died.I think you did the right thing on your video and not attempt the summit. I really only remember Julian Sands from the film A Room With a View when he set my student day's heart a flutter back in the 1980's as George Emerson.Such a great cast in that film. He then seemed to go on a do some weird horror stuff but he was a good actor if not forgotten about a bit here in the UK.He turned up in the odd Agatha Christie drama on TV sometimes. He had gone to look a bit drawn and gaunt in recent photos which made me think if he had an underlying health issue. Incredibly sad for his family . His brother I think has already accepted that he has probably perished on the mountain. Mountains are beautiful but dangerous places so enjoy them but be safe.
He was quite an avid hiker as well from what I read about him. However, with everything you do in life there is reward vs. risk involved. The reward here was to see the beauty of the mountains covered in snow and the satisfaction of completing a challenging climb. And even the most experienced climbers sometimes fall victim to the risks.

Beautiful hills around there so where he probably got the bug as a small child. I used to horse ride and loved galloping over the Welsh Mountains when I was younger.I have been skiing in the Austrian and French Alps but I am not too good with heights and was hopeless getting off chairlifts LOL A gentle stroll by the beach is more my style now. Nice video you did. I never realised that you had such high mountains in the region.. I have only visited Boston in the USA on a tour to Canada but I have struck up a friendship with a radio presenter in Toledo who wants me to visit her. I work in the media and she has my clients on her show sometimes. May be one day I will visit the USA again.

That is very possible! When I saw the sign it was almost completely buried and that was a week later after Julian went missing.

I know the SAR team that responded to his finding. he was found on Goode Canyon, he has not mountaineering equipment

Some people climb up the bowl and ski down, but I've been told it is double black diamond.

My best friend used to patrol at Baldy. Real double diamonds. He went for a hike one day and never came back. Years later we found some of his bones under Hell Gate cliffs right where he said he was going to hike. Alta ut. You could see the whole hike from his apartment between snowbird and alta.
Go to mount baldy ski resort when it dumps and ski off piste. Youll get a great dose of great skiing. Expert level stuff.
Whenever you go backcountry skiing you will always encounter double black and even more difficult lines. Do not ever go backcountry skiing if you dont have crampons, skins, and you think resort double black diamonds are difficult.
One man said he went up there to look for Juilian Sands and that he seen tracks where someone slid down and told police. My question is if he was reported missing on Jan 13 and than his phone was ping on the 15th where was the cellphone ping from on the mountain

Beauty should be viewed from afar. I don't see the temptation of climbing something so steep. Maybe in the summer but definitely not the winter.
It all depends on your experience level and equipment. For advanced mountaineers this is not that dangerous.

Unless you have the proper equipment and experience using them. Crampons (not microspikes) and Ice Axe are a must, but one must also know how to use them.

Very true! Sometimes circumstances change mid hike/climb and are out of ones control.
It's easy to understand why people gravitate to Baldy in the winter. It's beautiful, it's more physically challenging, and you have to be smart. You can see it from nearly anywhere in the LA basin, a snow capped mountain range, just beckoning everyone. Unfortunately, not everyone should try to do this. And if it's not in your comfort zone/skill level, stay away.

Strange... I hiked up to Devil's Backbone last Thursday and didn't see a single helicopter, drone, snowmobile or human searching for the lost hikers, other than myself. My tracks were the only tracks. And there were slip marks at the top that I told the San Bernadino Sheriff's Department about. Funny, now everyone is hiking up looking and making videos. Smh...

That's because the search-and-rescue teams are too smart to know better than to risk their own lives going the Devil's Backbone when the snow and ice is bad. Too dangerous to risk their own lives.

The vid doesn’t show how very steep the slopes actually are. My first time was in 2019 on hard pack ice; stayed in the ski hut and made it to the top mid morning then to go back down its very easy to get disoriented and hit a dead end cliff fall. Rescue personnel die there , so give it a pass and be safe.
Yeah, it never looks as steep on video as it does in person. That's nice that you got to stay in the ski hut. I think it has been closed ever since the pandemic.

The helicopter was asking about people about their extended car warranty. They have to defray the cost of SAR somehow.

OK. Education is good. Your video however shows very easy terrain for someone who is experienced in the snow. For those who aren’t try something In summer or take a course
For people with enough experience I'm sure it is easy, but it's all relative. I would say under these conditions it can be done by intermediate to advanced skill, but definitely not novices.
Looking for a person in these conditions... it's a probability that he sought shelter and is hidden from view.... what a miserable endeavor....
And this is why you should have a weapon....and fire 3x into the air to mark your location every hour.....

Instead of a weapon most people these days are carrying either a beacon or other gps device to let people know of their location. I'm not sure if Julian had one of these, but unfortunately since they can't find him I doubt that he did.
You were able to hike it on January 20th. Why couldn't rescuers able to hike it to Juilian Sands
there was a storm the day he got lost plus the winds and lo viz made it imposible to fly the helo. I was part of the group that responded to the fatallity on jan 8th, she died waiting for the winds to die down for the helo to cable her up

People who have successfully climbed Mt Everest have lost their lives on Mt Baldy. People need to know their limits and even then there is still uncontrollable risk.

Yes, Julian Sands went missing on Mt Baldy on Friday January 13th, 2023. As I write this he has still not been found.

The closest I've been to Mt. Baldy, is Pine Mountain.

The deaths occur from either hiking with the right equipment and poor understanding of the mountains and conditions or poor/ no equipment. These mountains are hikeable and climbeable with the right equipment and understanding or experience. The dangers of Mt Baldy is easy access. There’s a lot of scaremongering going on because people who don’t have the skill can’t understand those that Do have the skill to be on Baldy. Bring ice axe , crampons and ropes and ice anchors. Do it if you know what you’re doing. People all over the world are climbing vastly more dangerous mountains in wayyy more extreme conditions without the constant fearmongering.

OMG, never seen someone so fearful. Watch some Everest videos and you'll see how silly this is. I've Summited Baldy several times. Grew up in blizzard conditions. This is literally a walk in the park. Yes, helmets, crampons and axe are smart. And getting back down before sunset a good idea. But, being that fearful in such perfect winter conditions was kind of silly.
It really depends on your experience level. But even then, there have been a few experienced people who have successfully climbed Everest and then died on Baldy.

If it's so dangerous they shouldn't let people hike it and if people do hike it they should have to have a location beacon. That would save a ton of taxpayers money on that search and any search.
I heard that they are working on having people require a permit to hike it in the winter months. The permit process should help make sure people are experienced and have the proper equipment.
Im a mountaineering instructor, and Ive seen people with sticks climbing up the bowl 👀
Try baden-powell
I've done Baden-Powell before but never in the snow. I've heard the trail from Vincent Gap up to BP can get very icy since it's on the north face.
Definitely would not recommend baden-powell if there's any snow or ice with those switchbacks

It all depends on your experience and skill level. What I meant is that novices should stay away. If they shut it down, then the people with the expertise would be penalized unduly.
Judging by the tracks, many people have been hiking this trail. Not smart. There are plenty of places you can hike in the snow without endangering your life. Or others lives.
The problem is that some of these tracks are from people without the proper gear or experience. And some of them end up getting injured or worse.

Yeah, the steepness where I turned around was about the same as what I had already done past the rock garden, but the difference was in the snow. On the ridge the snow had turned to ice from the wind blowing on it.
I gotcha. Well at least you can always go back when things improve.
@@davidfeiler1279 even though it is icy wouldn’t you just step harder and secure your position with an axe (assuming you had one) or am I missing something? That’s what I do when it gets icy. I’m asking because I’m planning to do the route you just did this coming weekend.
@Durzo Blint you are 100% correct. But that is for going up. Coming down is a very different story. Facing forward down a steep icy incline is something I am not comfortable with. When the snow is soft you can mash your foot in to the powder to secure your footing, but when it is hard and icy it is tricky.
@@davidfeiler1279 okay, this is not something I am familiar with. The other times when I’ve done Baldy in the winter I am able to walk down it (with caution) but with relatively no issue. In the current conditions I would have to descend backwards securing every step?
I did Ontario peak last week and it was dreadful since we had to break trail for the whole route but no underlying ice to worry about when descending.
I guess what I’m getting at is I want to do Baldy this Sunday and have yet to encounter a situation where I wanted to turn around. These conditions I see in your video are new to me so I’m asking what should I be looking for when I go for my attempt.

Looks beautiful but I am getting vertigo just watching this. Sad for Julian Sands but you can probably guess what happened on such an icy terrain. I really don't think there can be any hope now. The rescue searches seem to have been cut back now as well.🥲

There had been a few bad slides on the top the week Julian disappeared including a female climber who sadly died.I think you did the right thing on your video and not attempt the summit. I really only remember Julian Sands from the film A Room With a View when he set my student day's heart a flutter back in the 1980's as George Emerson.Such a great cast in that film. He then seemed to go on a do some weird horror stuff but he was a good actor if not forgotten about a bit here in the UK.He turned up in the odd Agatha Christie drama on TV sometimes. He had gone to look a bit drawn and gaunt in recent photos which made me think if he had an underlying health issue. Incredibly sad for his family . His brother I think has already accepted that he has probably perished on the mountain. Mountains are beautiful but dangerous places so enjoy them but be safe.
He was quite an avid hiker as well from what I read about him. However, with everything you do in life there is reward vs. risk involved. The reward here was to see the beauty of the mountains covered in snow and the satisfaction of completing a challenging climb. And even the most experienced climbers sometimes fall victim to the risks.
@@davidfeiler1279 True. Julian Sands was brought up in the Yorkshire Dales (James Herriott country) where his books were set. Beautiful hills around there so where he probably got the bug as a small child. I used to horse ride and loved galloping over the Welsh Mountains when I was younger.I have been skiing in the Austrian and French Alps but I am not too good with heights and was hopeless getting off chairlifts LOL A gentle stroll by the beach is more my style now. Nice video you did. I never realised that you had such high mountains in the region.. I have only visited Boston in the USA on a tour to Canada but I have struck up a friendship with a radio presenter in Toledo who wants me to visit her. I work in the media and she has my clients on her show sometimes. May be one day I will visit the USA again.
