Enjoyed the vlog though did not quite understand why it was titled has Pattaya lost the Gen Xers. As a fellow Gene Xer who first came to Pattaya in the early 1990s, the transformation of Pattaya and the skyline over the last 30 years is nothing short of stunning. Who would have believed that an international Jazz Festival on a clean Pattaya Beach with cool cafes, new wine bars, a spectacular lifestyle, leisure mall (Central Festival) would be on Beach Road, all those years ago and now new announcements of five star hotels, Marriot and Kimpton being built there. As a number of us age, we prefer going to a nice restaurant in Pattaya and then being in bed by 11 pm than propping up a beer bar. A number of us have already gone through a health crisis and or had good friends die due to liver cirrhosis so we have radically reduced our consumption of alcohol and made requisite lifestyle changes.

Statistically, Gen-Z and Millenials are the poorest demographics and SEA remains the most affordable holiday destination, especially if you are staying for 2 weeks or more. Another factor is retirement, older generation could retire much earlier, so it made sense to save during working career for a long retirement but with younger people looking to retire earliest in their 70's, they don't get to really experience the "golden years" and it makes more sense to travel and enjoy life when they are still in good health.

As an X myself the reason is quite clear. From around 2008 - the rise of the baht, the digital age, and the influx of mass tourism from India and China etc the golden era was over for most X's (save for a short period during the emergence from the pandemic when it seemed like the old days).
Although the food options have improved Pattaya is definitely a colder and more soulless place than the old days, but we still have our great memories.

Your generation is getting what globalisation and open borders has left on the table. Basicaly feelgood policies. Imposters in governments. So you wont be able to earn and eventually own an asset. Add the climate change religion to that, add all the 'dont do this and that' because its dangerous now. The music plays in the developing world. This is where people comment about safety and child labor or some conditions. What western countries coined poluters and unions called for high wages and governments increases income taxes, Greens did their part for emissions. All this moved all to Asia.

You speak about the education of today's youth and the technology, but us lot learned how to start a fire, build a shelter, stand up for ourselves, history, decency... etc. We were young men when we first went to Pattaya and the girls screamed at us, there was also a lot of older white guys sat with younger beauties, I remember thinking that was cool. A lot of Gen X and younger will never retire, and those that do will struggle to stay in one place, they get bored too easily.
Experiences is what they are after, they come here for a few weeks holiday, party a lot and move on to the next experience. Talking to a lot of the girls they understand this too, that's why they still are looking for the stability of a relationship with an older man. Unfortunately not many of the girls want to stay in and around Pattaya, they want to move overseas or back "home" with their families in Isan.

Hi Phil. Thanks for another insightful video.
When we came to Pattaya for the first time 20 odd years ago, you are right, we stood out! Being around 30 years old, we were not the typical Pattaya tourist. The typical Pattaya tourists were, as you mention, the 45-60 year olds.
Now the 45-60 year olds are the Generation X, us, and it is (as I see it) still the predominant age group visiting Pattaya (that is when it comes to Western Farang men).
However, younger men are not a rare sight in Pattaya these days, unlike back then. In those days, as you say, we had to work back home to earn money. There were no short cuts. Flights were more expensive, and Pattaya was probably perceived as a somewhat unsafe place. So it was not the first place a 20 or a 30 year old would consider as a holiday destination.
Nowadays, younger men have to some extent swapped out Benidorm and Ibiza with Pattaya. All there is to know and what-not-to-do's can be found at a click of a button. We had four lines on Pattaya in an outdated Lonely Planet guide book. Also, the total price of two weeks in Pattaya today is probalby equal to two weeks in Spain. Moreover, young people have more disposable income, and they have more means of achieving that income: You mention crypto and working abroad. But also vlogging, influencing, sponsorships, online hustling etc.
To summarize: A lot more young men in Pattaya today, but still mostly geriactrics like us. 😊

    • @LePubPattaya
      @LePubPattaya  7 хвилин тому

I agree that youngsters are coming to Pattaya rather than Ibiza or Benidorm. It just depresses me a bit. Not because they are younger and more “virile”, it’s just their behavior.
      They have trouble sitting down.
Love the comment about Lonely Planet. To my recollection, those two sentences that we got were simply don’t bother going.

I think as long as younger people are able to find places like Pattaya, or Thailand and Southeast Asia in general, that have a much lower cost of living and better weather and more fun nightlife....they'll keep coming. Cost of living is a huge factor in deciding to live and work abroad. I mean, the cost to rent an apartment/flat here in the states can easily cost $1,500 USD a month for just a studio...and that's just an unfurnished, zero amenities unit. Then you have to add your utility costs and your other monthly costs on top of that. Younger people know now that for jus the cost of monthly rent in their home country, they can pay for their entire monthly budget in Patttaya. Bearing that in mind, why not take a lower paying remote job and move to paradise as a young person? Hell, if I had the seed money, I'd already be there.

Nice video Phil as someone who is a few years older than yourself found what you had to say very interesting & poignant. One take....and no crib sheet................impressive...............................In 5-10 years, I reckon that Thailand will be pretty much unaffordable for the demographic that has tradionally retired/long stayed in the Kingdom. One will need a healthy retirement pot/pension in the coming years................the country used to be an almost undiscovered niche, now it's a free for all and it's uniqueness has been diluted....................................................More importantly imo, it's not the Wild West anymore and almost aligns with the West in regards to many regulations. but, hey....................................The Thais haven't really changed, they are still the main element that attracts me to the country.................

No, you've lost the boomers. When I first visited Pattaya in 1999 and then moved there in 2/2002, everything was smooth. People all got along together regardless of what was their nationality. Everyone meshed together.
The only problem I could see coming down the pike was yaba. Before I moved to Thailand, but on my first visit, (99) I read an article in the BKK Post about the yaba "problem." Being from the US, I said to myself, "You don't have a problem yet!"
I moved to another country in 2010, and I watch the Pattaya news on utube, and there isn't a day that goes by that violence isn't being committed against foreigners.
The boomers have either died or have returned to their home countries for medical reasons.

Maybe Gen Z/millenial have nothing to worry about/lose, but I wonder Gen X may be more worried about their reputation back home (in management positions, more of their friends/colleagues having an opinion over how women are treated/perceived etc.). No longer can you travel to Thailand/Pattaya and be off the radar for a couple of weeks in secret - now you're always connected, and more liable than ever to appear seen on social media and be judged when you don't want to be. People's private lives and views are more open and are no longer seen as independent from their professional ones. I wonder if Gen X have more to lose from being (mis)judged by being seen to be associated with engaging in some aspects of Pattaya life?
If you do a "what will Pattaya be like in 10 years time" video that would be interesting, I see the world outside Pattaya changing a lot and I can't believe social pressures won't force the night life scene there to change too. But, who knows, Gen Z might become rich mongers too.

The thing is that the first thought for those who do earn good money, who like you said now often work online, is to get out of the West asap - because things are just going so badly over there.
As a non-tattooed, non-manbag wearing traveller. I can tell you there's a mix of young guys who come to Pattaya. If you're a healthy and technically minded boomer you may have had a good life and reaping the benefits of today's technology. But I'm sorry GenX are by far the luckiest when you think of averages. You were born after the war your childhood was marred with shortages, poverty and grief, you left school before computers came to school or even university. Many of you worked in dirty industry and mines. Gen X on the other hand got taught IT in the class room and all through uni as it became more wide spread and more capable, mines were closing as we were in our teens, only a few made it underground before they finally closed the hole, barely time to damage their lungs. Most genX are technically savvy having been introduced to it in their teens, allowing them to easily grow with it. Our childhoods were colourful, our boomer parents stayed together and built real families, sadly lost from genX onwards making childhood a bitter battleground in most homes thanks to social media and selfishness. No 100% genX are the luckiest generation

You are wrong abot the Marine Disco in the late 80s and 90s is was Fantastic a large dance floor with boxes on each side were girls use to dance on. And there where 3/1 girls to the guys and it did have a good light show it was 100% great place to go to find a girl with no bar find it was a great end to the night and if you where not to drunk you headed to Marine disco two. Now they have nightclubs that are more expensive with chairs and tables covering the floor so dancing at your table which is crap as you can not walk around as much. If I had the money I would have the club dance floor the same as the Old marine disco where you can stand around and watch the girls dancing and having fun not stuck to a table dancing on the spot. But the thing now is there is not 3/1 in favour of the ladies as there is to many guys now and younger guys at that. I holidayed to pattaya for over 20yrs in the 90s but it is not the same as it once was it has gone down hill and I Noticed that every year I visited that it was changing so made up my mind to not go back my last holiday was 2016/2017 so thats it. But they do have a ton of options than previous generations. Also, for most younger people, retirement isn’t an option and they’re already prepared at the back of their heads that they will have to work as long as they’re physically and mentally functional. The Gen z and to an extent the millennials born in the 90s are the least likely to own homes or to get married and have a family, there’s ton of research showing that, so saving or working in an old schooled way for the silver years is not an option for them.
