It is a sad day when we have to admit to not being able to use our past hand to hand training anymore due to a disability, I am 50 yrs old now and my cane is my only hope for self defense. I have had many years of training in karate, Taekwondo and Jiu-jitsu. I no longer have the strength, speed, balance or stamina to effectively use any of them. Relying on a cane is very dangerous because it is easily taken from you, especially when using the crook to hook the offender. I personally use a hidden sword cane with a quick release not a screw together. But I am in Texas so I am sure you know what I also carry just in case...

I ordered my canes many years ago when pending a hip replacement and was always in much pain as I put it off for way to long. I ordered both the notched cane and the one it has Cane Masters etched into it.
I now many years later am having pain in my left hip again after a very blessed several years of being able to walk again. Now is a different time where it is common that a disabled person be assaulted. I often use my cane now until I get the problem fixed again. I will be watching and practicing again and keep the practice in my fitness regimen. These days scary times are everywhere and attacks have become more violent and disabled people face having what little physical freedom taken from the in a moment.
As many have said in comments I can not agree more that is is important to push yourself to whatever exercise you can and ABSOLUTLY make practice of what you learn in these video's on a regular basis.
Be safe folks and be good to yourselves and each other. God Bless

If you bring him down, fine, but if you need a stick to walk, you might not have ability to give a powerful kick. Therefore, just break the opponents focus and punch at his face which will loosen his grip on the cane so you should be able to yank it out of his grip. The rest is up to you.

Yes, a well-timed kick to the groin can just about put an end to most situations, a few christmases ago me and a friend where walking along minding our own business, this guy with a few drinks started motoring smart remarks , trying to get a rise , unbelievable I was willing to just let things go , especially considering we were on my mates Road so, I said to the guy look just go home and have to having a few drinks Happy Christmas goodnight goodnight , but this to him was showing a weakness in his mind , he got braver Intent so, I said come on then put my fists up which would be usually the way I would go because , I was in boxing for a long time but as he approached, I just gave him a swift kick between the legs step back because it takes about 4 seconds to kick in fully 😆 lol , every guy will know what I mean all of a sudden , he started going oh I know you how's it going that was a misunderstanding mate, because he was hurting he wanted nothing to do with a fight with the pain he was feeling, I could have took advantage of it but I let him go, it was Christmas after all but guys like this could just as easily have pulled out a Blade so you have to be fully committed when you do make your Move

One of those guys drew the short straw. This is cool though, I definitely picked up some watching this. I watched it a dozen times since yesterday. I have no one to practice on however and my dog wants me to throw it. I do practice in the forest everyday but yesterday I ran into a hunter who is friends with the property owner. I may have lost use of the forest. I love that forest and have spent nearly everyday for two years out in it foraging, hacking paths, making logs into benches. It's nice. I found I can armor my oak cane with cord and practice on dead trees. One place I refer to as the circle of assholes, reminds me of some of my highschool football team. It's a circle of tall skinny dead hardwood trees lost the race to sunlight and the White Pines won, which provide arm like lower dead branch whorls to practice on. The circle of assholes trees provide multiple attacker strategy and sequence practice, or I can pick one or three by changing my start position. Also provides for an attacker from the rear practice. I got to wrap my wrist and use compression gloves cause I got real bad arthritic shit going on. My favorite tree, a 60' dead Sugar Maple fell over and smashed one of my chairs. I didn't think it would. Gotta be ready to dodge the top of the trees falling off from bayonet thrusts. I'm really digging this Cane Fu stuff, I don't want to practice in front of other people though, cause that's my business, and I don't want them in it. Nobody needs to know what I can do with a cane or I will show them if necessary. I live in Tennessee, so sword canes are totally legal, just gotta avoid federal buildings and schools or colleges, which I got no use for any of those fuckers. I gotta figure how to train with somebody else though, and I don't have any friends other than my dog.

If someone tries a 2 handed choke they will also be driving you backwards with real force. Standing with your feet shoulder width apart will mean you get pushed down because your balance will instantly be compromised. You fight the way you train. It is amazing what a rugby player can accomplish against someone who claims to be “trained” but has never trained with someone who actually applies force. This is one of the biggest problems with Aiki-Jitsu styles. If you got your base under you and dropped your centre of gravity you may actually have a fighting chance at using your cane for something other than helping you stand up from the ground.

      Hapkido student here
generally speaking, footstance is worked on a lot, and we get in trouble if any of us are caught standing like a board as they are in the video, haha. I think they didn't worry about stance purely to get through as much as they could in the shortest amount of time (they must've had something else going on)
it's also worth noting that something taught a lot is moving with momentum instead of fighting against it - eg, if someone grabs your throat pushing you back, one thing you could do is take their elbows down while moving back and down, and redirecting the momentum into their face.
I think the people who are quick to denounce martial arts training are the people who have never trained themselves ;) hope this helped! :)

Not realistic, in the confines of stupid British Laws but, you'll be dead. I'm a paraplegic too, with a severe degenerative spinal cord disease. I use a Hanbo with a wrist sling for support, it's made out of an oak shovel Handle and is designed mainly for mobility, but the dual-purpose edged section will break anything. I had it certified as a mobility device at the Cop shop as they are taking them off of people lately. I never realised after surviving my single days, that I'd be back into my fighting days approaching 70 and disabled, but I am. dam the Laws those bastards will not be able to give chase when I walk away, as I have already had a pack of 4 retreat to their Van in a remote Park, and drive it at me nearly killing both myself and my old Dog. We dived in that Car and they left damage and paint on the Door, as I didn't have time to close it, sick of Laws which only work for the pond scum of life.

While these are very static exercises they are still effective. However, have in mind an aggressor also can move very quickly into your space.
That's where good "swing and hit" techniques are handy. If you train these techniques please use a dummy or sandbag as a strike with such a cane can be deadly or at least inflict serious injury...this is not a toy!

    A) it's tragic, that disabled elderly people have to defend themselves against gangs of roving young people. B) I'm sick of being forced to endanger myself further, by not being allowed to really defend myself. I lived in the UK and defended myself against two larger opponents, who initially were throwing half house Bricks at Lorries with canvas and ropes coving their load, which shot off with all the momentum of the trucks at 80mph+, nearly killing one of us. We tried to evade them ducking into a stationary and newspapers shop after yelling at them didn't work. When we left, they were waiting, still with a bag full of Bricks, my mate wasn't a fighter, I held a Judo license at my local Cop shop! I told my friends to run while I went forward to them, to stop any idea of getting a brick in the Back of the head, as I approached he went for a steel pen in his top pocket, and his heavier set and larger mate was Backing him up, I went for his eyes as a reaction to the pen being pulled and stuck the other Guys ear, Knocking him out. Guess who the Cops charged, I was an apprenticed Engineer at the time in my first year, and the others I'd Known for years both worked in Banks as I remember, we coincidentally met on the tube coming Home and were just walking home chatting. I had never been in contact with the police 1st charge and they threw the Book at me over the JUDO license, I practised Martial arts for a long time after that, but never took another grade and only paid by cash. They charged me with all sorts, I can't remember the list, but it added up to 15yrs inside if I lost. luckily enough many saw it and came forward, they dropped the charges but held them at the Copshop for supposedly a year, which I was to find out was really indefinitely. As I worked on many High profile Jobs, Hendon police college was one. It required a lot of explaining every time! At the end of my apprenticeship, I left to live in Canada which has the same stupid rules and Laws. Now if any attack, and these days they are even out here, as I'm seen as easy pickings, I do what I need to and get the Hell out and don't revisit the scene, as the Cops stink!

Skip the 'punch block' scenario - a kook on pcp will punch 3 or 4 times per second with both hands flailing. 3:30 keep the back of your hand parallel to the floor - having your hand vertical is very weak -
Using 2 hands with all your moves is probably 3 times stronger.

    • @guarddog318

I spent quite a while as a cop, and never encountered anybody on drugs - PCP or otherwise - who could punch that fast.
Also, having studied both Kali and Escrima, I'm fairly certain the average person can block a punch with a stick, if they'll practice the techniques.
...also, keep in mind that the average punk/thug/asshole isn't likely to expect the victim to fight back, or have any skill/aptitude at fighting or using a weapon. They want and choose 'easy' targets, like people with walking sticks/canes.
One way or the other, it's a hell of a lot easier to defend yourself with a weapon and some knowledge of how to use it than it is empty-handed and with no clue what to do.

As a beginner which I would consider myself I think that basic thrusting and swinging techniques and vulnerable location training will get somebody formidable pretty quick if they if they have some strength behind the stick.

I’m one fall away from not being able to father my children. If I hit the ground even once I’m a dead man if the attacker is serious I don’t get up quick. Are any of you actually dependent on the cane to walk?

I hope that's not a serious question? Running doesn't mean you have to be Usain Bolt in the 100m. It means moving away as fast as you can, getting out of harm's way... probably at a higher speed than you usually walk. It doesn't have to mean sprinting at 15mph. Hit someone in the crotch and run away whilst they recover, simple. People with canes aren't necessarily invalids. They probably have more brain power than you though. 🙄

UK legal definition of an offensive weapon is any article made, intended or adapted to be used to cause harm etc. So, a rolled up newspaper (or, exaggerating for effect, a feather) could be so defined. The trick is to carry an everyday article, for the purpose of its design. If it is subsequently used as a weapon, for self defence, with reasonable force applied, you're in the clear. Yes you'll have questions to answer, but you'll be in the clear.

The problem with all of this stuff is you need to add rage/adrenaline to the attacker while adding fear and shock to the defender and see what really happens, even if in a training scenario you tell someone to go at you 100% it will never be like the real thing on the street..even when people use something as powerful as a firearm in a real situation it often doesn’t go the way they planned or trained for. Not to say that there aren’t people who’ve put a lot of training in with firearms can’t deploy them effectively..but to deploy a cane effectively in a real life situation would require a ton of very intense practice....I say this only because my 60 year old mother just bought a cane saying it can be used for self defense because she watched a UA-cam video, so just want to make it clear for all you old folks out there...also this beer gut bloke (no offense) is putting way to much credit to “shattering bone” by blocking a strike with a cane..people are fast enough to lay off in that situation and transition to a different attack...the best chance you have with a cane is to swing at their face...and even then they’ll prob block it, grab it, rip it out of your hand and continue to beat the shit out of you....just saying

You need to practice and Know where and How to hit, It takes a little time, but works, if you know what to do, they are are also demonstrating within the confines of the Law, in stupid countries like the UK and Canada, where we have to worry more about the attacker than the criminals. I've been there and done that, as a Paraplegic in today's society, strike, Break stuff, disable them and escape, they are probably not going to fess up that they attempted to rob a disabled 70yr old like myself, at least they haven't so far.

Won't an able bodied person look rather silly walking around with a walking stick?
If a person genuinely needs the stick will this work since the stick will be off the ground and not being used for the support it was genuinely being used for in the first place?
I would have thought the thing was to be used at long distance to persuade a would be attacker to think again.
If this does not work and the attacker closes in, surely the stick is now a hindrance rather than asset.
Surely the stick should be sacrificial? once its lost its use ditch it for fisticuffs.

If you use a hard wood cane that is like the butt end of a pool cue stick, and not some cheap low cost one made of light materials, you will have a dangerous weapon when used right. The methods used in this video were very basic and gentle at best. They would not do well in an actual attack. A cane is generally used by the elderly to get around, and if someone takes good defense instruction on how to use a cane in their young age, and continues to practice, by the time they are in their 70's, they will be a big problem to any thug who preys on the elderly. One good strike from a quality made cane will cause severe damage to the legs, shins, groin, arms, or head and send the thug into severe shock mode from the pain, and they will either be knocked out, or running away from their victim to save their life.

    • @truthseekerKJV
