    As a kid in Illinois, we would fish with live mice for bass. A large weedless hook rubber banded ( those used on braces ) under a mouse. Float it on a stick to where you want him ( edge of the lilly pads ), and jerk him off. A SWIMMING MOUSE GAINED IMMEDIATE HITS! If you were lucky, the band would break so you could catch another.

      Who hasn't caught a 900 pound bass. Most of the ones I catch are by using 50 pound shiners and size 30 Ott circle hooks. The hardest part is casting my Penn international gold reel with 1000 pound test line further than about 2 feet. Those 1000 oz lead sinkers help a bit.

      @@kierra_mist When I saw that he went to Pet Smart? No. I stopped watching. Because I had pet rats for years. The reason I stopped was it was too painful when they Passed. Couldn't handle it anymore. That's why when my last 3 cats die, I won't get another. But speaking of...do you know I could put one of my pet rats on my bed with my cat and they wouldn't even attack it? Granted, both were raised in my Apartment, but people talk about "instinct" and all that, but they actually played together. It was Amazing to watch! So, yes I'm a little sensitive and biased. Sorry about that. PS I'm also a Fisherman, and I also throw them all back. I just love all God's Creatures. I catch spiders in a cup and let them go outside. If they're small enough? When I was a "Keeper" at a zoo, I ordered chicks (baby chickens) to feed to our raptors (eagles, owls & hawks.) They came like that, frozen solid in a plastic bag in a corrugate box. I had to take them out of the freezer the day before so that they would be thawed for the birds to eat. I did not worry. I knew that I would see them again when the owls regurgitated their "Owl Pellets!" 😉

    I know where that is but you will never find a trace of me. Always take back what you bring ;) I've always respected that about you. My motto is leave things as they were and take garbage back if found. All the structure the fish use. bs small items like fishing line that can harm wildlife and plastic items I take with me within reason. places like this can be saved if the common fisherman understands the value of conservation. Keep it clean and alive. 👍 Keep up the great work here in Houston bro. I appreciate it and the wildlife does as well. I saw what I thought was a loon the other day on a lake in Katy,TX those are amazing fisherman but along way from home. They are northern bird we had in Michigan. They do migrate so I reported the bird. It may have been displaced during the hurricane/tornado season. full black with green neck and white block shaped bloches on the body. Loons mate for life so that was strange to see.

    I'll give you a papa tip, one of my papa ways. here in nc on a river below my house you can walk a few feet away from rods and turn around and it's gone. so i go to hardware store and those peaces you mount copper bipe to wall.wrap on rod handles and epoxy or super glue wrapping. then buy those cheep clip hooks / snaps people hook keys to belt. hook to handle, then tie pari cord on. the pari cord long enough to tie to tree, good limb,tree root,rock, a wooden or rebar stake drove at.a angle to tie pari cord to. put as many rods out as you want. walk away fishing down or up stream and when you come back to check your rod may be partially drug.down bank from big fish but it ain't going no farther. but use rope of choice. i also use this method with the 10and 13 foot retractable fishing poles like Wal-Mart sells. old fashioned cane poles would be great . I've seen fisherman having many poles stretching out say from up close to a wide area. take small propane stove ,fixings, pan and set around with friends or family and cook as you catch. papa from the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in NC wishing you well. 😊

    Dude the wild deer mice that fish "occasionally' eat in the wild are much much smaller than a rat. As we see here the fish dont like strange bait they are naturally weary of it thays why we disquise our tackle to look like their natural diet. Even predatory fish are usually looking for smaller fish depending on time of the season. Seems like a strange endeavor to me but thank you for taking us along with you. Yeah, I wouldn't use a live rat. They are extremely intelligent little animals.

      I also had a blk hooded make, raised from 6 weeks. He was extremely intelligent and would games with me. It was like he was trying to outsmart me, trying to outsmart him. He was extraordinary so much i included him in a boom on Amazon “All Creatures Greatly Loved” under Snoopy. Love rats, they are far more intelligent than human realize

    About 30 years ago, I once caught a huge bass on a hot dog. I was at the baseball fields where I used to play little league and there was a huge creek behind the fields. I dunno how or why but it ended up in shallower parts of the water. So I threw a hot dog on the hook from the concession stands lol and within in a couple casts he took off with it.

      Not sure, I have to look into that. The water level dropped very suddenly and loads of dust started flowing downstream, creating what I believe to be a hypoxic environment in the narrow section of the bayou upstream. I need to look into why that happened.

    It's crazy that it took so many days to catch a fish, especially with rats. Glad it paid off though with such a beautiful gar. Great video as always and I can't wait to get out on the water with you next week!

    • @wildlifefishingshow
      @wildlifefishingshow  8 місяців тому

      There are loads of dead fish in the later half of the video floating downstream, probably as a result of the bayou dropping very suddenly and creating a hypoxic environment further upstream where it's much more narrow.

    Entertaining video! Cool that you are sensitive to the contaminants/etc in the bait, but i think maybe trapping invasive/nuisance animals for bait would also be ethical.
