He was born on 26 February 1802 in Eastern France and his father was an officer In Napoleon’s army. Though he is best know for his writing, he was also active in politics and fought against social injustice.
He was also a great artist and enjoyed drawing usually on paper with dark ink and charcoal to make small pieces that he shared with his family and friends. Some of his sketches even caught the attention of great painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Eugène Delacroix, both of whom admired Hugo's work!
