  • Jared Waimon, USA Hockey Goalie Mentor and Owner of the Pro Crease, coaches us through what to do with goalies when space is limited on the ice. Jared's drill can be used during practice when an extra coach is available to work with a goalie on the ice. The Push, Stop, Recovery Drill works to develop your goalie's skating, stopping, centering on the puck and recovery to receive a second shot. Jared focuses on goalie technicalities to ensure the goalie can transfer their skills to game play situations.

Goalie should not stop with right foot if pushing with left, from goal line to right top side of crease. This causes him to lose squareness, which you can clearly see at 1:25 ish. Yes normally with T pushes, you stop with lead foot. But this is an exceptional case. Rather, goalie should snowplow stop with both skates, engaging the push skate as well, to square up sooner

One thing I’ve been told keep glove up not in middle because is easier to go down than up so I keep it up then I can drop quicker

Are you serious? That's awful advice. It's always easier to go up than down. Think of how your elbow bends up not down.

If you’re a youth goalie or a parent with one, PLEASE READ THIS..
I was a youth goalie, for years. I started out strong, was good, best around in my age group. When going from age 14 to 15 i got a new coach, one who thought HE knew best how goalies should play. He forced me to start staying upright more, and told me not to drop down unless i HAD to. It completely ruined my game, i never played high-school hockey, and i was never good again because i wasnt playing naturally.. Please, PLEASE if you see a coach making a kid change his style because he thinks he knows best, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. It killed me that i never got to have fun playing goalie again, and never moved on.. Note: This only goes for kids who have been playing the position for years and developed their own style. If they’re a brand new goalie, never played, then a bit of direction is good. But more than anything, the direction SHOULD be, “do whatever comes naturally to stop the puck” cause its different for every kid.
Please learn from my mistake of letting that coach ruin hockey for me...

I find it strange that a goalie coach needs to read of sheets to tell his lesson... Giving these basic tips should be second nature to him... he looks so tense and nervous and he sounds like a robot.

Maybe it's because not everyone is comfortable in front of a camera. Also plenty of actors and actresses as well as news media read off of cue cards as well.

Matt Duffield it helps if you learn to hockey stop, I would recommend practice with your goalie skates first then add your pads.

+Sean Nance I was thinking the same thing. Looks so awkward. I hold my glove as if I'm holding a glass of water. Cuts off the best angle, and is most comfortable. Also I don't like the way he places his stick when hugging the post. Looks like you could use it to funnel a shot directly to the net if you are behind the goal line. A lot of weird tendencies in this vid.

as a forward l like the way they turn the pads toward where they are going perfect goal shot , totally wrong

Bro, seriously? The style of yesteryear is long dead in todays modern game. The game moves far to quickly for a stand-up, pad together windwill glove save goal tending style. No, there should not be an over usage of a robotic butterfly style, but if you think that the old style is the only answer, you are sadly mistaken. Blocking butterfly, active hands, reactionary saves, situational awareness, everything should be utilized. To say old technique is the answer to a modern game, is faulty logic.

The coach is reading a paper in front of him. That's why he looks so tense 😬 and nervous 😩 and he is probably stage fright that would be another reason why he is so tense 😬 and nervous 😩
