Hey man, great to hear your ambition on becoming a physician. One of the best things you can do is take AP classes in high school and start taking college classes at a community college. If you work hard, you can be done with a lot of the prerequisite courses early on. If I was to go back, I’d definitely do this. Good luck!

General strategies may translate to the new MCAT, but the content is much more broad than the old MCAT by a lot! It's much more "a mile wide, an inch deep" now. 2 months may not be realistic for people who aren't coming straight out of prerequisite courses-of which there are a lot more.

If it's ok I'd like to give a tip of my own for studying in general, though I don't know how useful it will be to people
To me it seems that effective studying is all about momentum. Learning something new for the first time is always the hardest part, but the more you revise it the easier it gets, and if you forget it and have to revise it then it comes back faster and stays with you longer. You should always pay close attention in class and learn the material thoroughly at the time (this will be the hardest part). Then when you get home, revise it and make sure you understand the smaller details and that it makes sense. Make sure you understand where it fits into your overall syllabus so you can sort of picture a map of everything you have learned for that subject and where it fits in. Be sure to check it again the next day, then 3 days later, then a week later or so.
For things like sequences try to think of a funny phrase or word e.g. for interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, teleophase think IPMAT. It's a meaningless word but if you forget a phase or forget the order you can think of that word to jog your memory. For Kingdom, Phyllus, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species think KP Crisps Only For Good Students, again it helps you remember the order and jog your memory, and lets you remind yourself of things you forgot without consulting a textbook. For definition, try to break them down into fragments which are all about a small thing and come together to make up a definition. When you understand that topic thoroughly for the first time, 90% of the hard work has been done. When you build the knowledge and maintain it over time, its a powerful foundation to build on, and you get a strong sort of *momentum* which carries you forward with less effort. A lot of what is on MCAT is built on A level Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Sociology and Psychology, and if you have the foundation then theres comparatively little 'new' stuff to learn and thus less resistance to learning and it wont tire you so fast
Also I'd like to say, knowledge is one thing, but demonstrating the knowledge is another thing. I know I personally have a tendency to leave out details that I take for granted e.g. saying respiration when I actually mean aerobic respiration. Taking mock tests helps you to spot these weaknesses and habits and deal with them. GCSE and A level mock tests will be good for eliminating many of these weaknesses, and I find that using Anki to chop the questions and answers into flashcards helps me to check and doublecheck that I've stop repeating these mistakes. Be sure to use bold and underline for the specific parts of the mark scheme that you keep forgetting to write (in my example, I would write "bacteria in the pond digest organic matter and remove oxygen from the pond via *aerobic* respiration" to draw my attention to that word)
Problem with these strategies is its more of a long term strategy than a short term one, but its never too late to learn, and when you get it going it makes future learning easier because you have a solid and familiar foundation thats easy to revise and reinforce without exhausting your attention span

Natalie Ruth - I’ve heard that Classics students do better on CARS (which is where most people struggle). My point being, I don’t think the major matters. In the end, there’s only so many subjects the MCAT covers and you can take the corresponding courses regardless of major. Just pick a major you like so your GPA will be good. Sorry if this info is outdated and you know all this already

Your videos are very helpful and I've watch all of them! :)
Your new animation is great and I'm so happy that you are changing it up a bit to spice things up!
-I would just like to ask what Company you used to study for the MCAT. I currently have the Kaplan books but I'm not 100% sure if this is high-yield enough to Master the concepts and key ideas. I really want to do well in this exam so any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
-Lastly, How do you deal with Mental Fatigue? I get really tired easily whenever I'm studying for anything. I get enough sleep every night (8hours) and I often take breaks while I'm studying but my mental fatigue often gets the best of me... Please help!
Thank you very much and I see good future in this channel! Well done and more power to your channel!!

I actually find the Kaplan to relate more to the real-world which is probably why I like it since I like to relate what I'm learning in real life. I agree that the ExamKrackers 101 books are helpful. I also have them and they are great!! :)
As for the mental fatigue that I talk about, I will try my best to explain the situation and hopefully it will be clear enough.
Ok, so when I'm studying, I like to study in my desk with minimal background noise. However, when I start to read my books and I don't understand certain topics and concepts, I begin to get a little dizzy. So what I do is I get up and take a break. I usually take a quick walk outside sometimes and I also grab a glass of water. After my break, I begin to study again but the problem still persist. As soon as I sit down, I get tired automatically as if the energy in my entire body has been drained out even if I just took a break...
I'm not sure if this is just me or if this is because I am a naturally extroverted person who may need social interaction to regain my energy but yeah... To this day, I have tried multiple techniques to reduce my mental fatigue and to keep my momentum going but I keep crashing...
One last thing to keep in mind, I like to give myself at least an hour of "me time" just doing what makes me happy but it still doesn't work for me... It almost feels hopeless at times...
Thank you very much for replying back to me! :)
      Keep up the great work!

As for being in any accident, luckily I have not been in any major accidents involving my head. I think that its just a matter of tiredness for me and lack of sleep. I do notice that since I'm getting pretty good sleep now, my focus is getting better.
I am very happy that your mental fatigue has gotten better through the help of a specialist and I am very grateful for your offer to help a fellow student out. :D
Thank you again and I wish you all the best in the future!
      Happy Holidays!

In the beginning of video you recommend taking the test shortly after completing the prerequisite courses. This is no longer an option for me as i am a year out of undergrad and it has been awhile since i have taken many of the courses. Do you have any recommendations? I was planning on studying at least the full months of june and july and will have no other commitments at all. I wanted to try and average 5 hours a day. I wanted to take the test around mid august? Should i give myself more time. My only worry is I will start working again in mid august and will not be able to study as much.

Do you think the KAPLAN mcat study guides are effective for reaching the 90th percentile?
I am wanting to get in the higher percentages, however I am switching degrees. So many of the prerequisites I will be taking the same time I plan to take the MCAT. Essentially I won't have the background others may. Do you think using the KAPLAN study tools and finding a group of peers to study for will be enough?

Question.. For the first month of studying for the MCAT. You explicitly stated that you did a prep course; should I also do that and study 10-20 hrs a week or is that too much? I’m currently a freshman and I’m also thinking of taking the test between sophomore and junior yr. But I want to know what I can do right now. If that makes sense. Thanks 😁

My biggest issue being premed and taking the prerequisites is that I need to know how what I'm learning is going to translate into actually being a doctor. I've literally spoken to some doctors and they can't tell me the last time they used any kind of chemistry, Physics, or complex mathematics. Then I've spoken to some doctors who who have told me they use it for their research... I could care less about research I have no desire to do research it's boring to me!

I am a highly experienced subspecialty practioner in one of the country's major medical centers. None of the pre-med science courses were of any value in the practice of medicine. Medical school classes (I also taught in fine medical school) are composed of students with varied backgrounds. One can not assume ANY medically-relevant stores of information. So, the faculty must assume that the students know nothing and then begin the rapid construction of the necessary foundation upon which to build. As an undergraduate I would advise you to enrich your life with courses that expand your world and to develop highly-effective communication skills. Oh, and ace the MCAT!

  • @uncle978
    @uncle978 7 років тому +1

I know you haven't taken the new MCAT, but if you do make another video, you should def emphasize how to best utilize breaks. With it taking me close to 7 hours to complete (with breaks and lunch), I've noticed that when I eat and what I eat is something to practice! The worst thing is when you have to pee 15 minutes (after lunch) and into a 1 hour 40 minute section!

    • @rhondahalliburton2456

523 is the new mcat which started 2016. His score was 99.9% based on the old score which highest score was 40. New MCAT is much longer 7-8 hrs and old was 4 hrs. My son is an M2 Medical Student and took the new MCAT. He took the Kaplan. But others like the Princeton review better.

Would you recommend studying a month for each section as your taking the class? My issue is that I decided to be pre-med late in college. So I finish all of my pre-requisites, the time I graduate. Last pre-req is Orgo II. (when I plan to take it March 2018) graduation 2 months later.
