For those wondering why Rengoku didn't awaken a demon slayer mark in this battle despite probably fulfilling all the conditions, it's because Tanjiro hasn't awaken his mark at this point. A sun breathing user has to awaken it first before other demon slayers can awaken theirs through some kind of resonance, as stated in season 4.

Otherwise Rengoku might have unlocked his during fighting Akaza. But then also it's almost impossible to kill Akaza for a single hashira even if he have demon Slayer mark unlocked
