- The actor who won an Emmy for his portrayal of the scion of a media empire family in "Succession" says his own upbringing contained none of the resentments that play out in the HBO series (now completing its fourth and final season). Jeremy Strong talks with "Sunday Morning" contributor Ben Mankiewicz about finding himself on the stage, and of - finally - letting go of Kendall Roy.

Will never understand why he gets so much criticism for his process. What he does is beautiful
I mean criticize a holes like Jared Leto. Not this man.
People think his process makes him pretentious, but if you hear him talk, he’s incredibly humble
@@thomasmccarty1746 How bizarre. Committing yourself to a role shows how much you believe in the work. It’s not just another pay check.
He does? It’s admirable. He also seems to enjoy his work so much. That’s awesome
People hate because it makes him very difficult to work with for the rest of the cast with the way he refuses to practice lines with them, isolating himself from them outside of filming, etc. Brian Cox called it incredibly annoying
Breaks my heart how mocked and bullied he so often is by the press, for daring to be an ambitious working class person. I thought people wanted eccentric celebrities? Apparently not. He’s a hero to me, I appreciate his obvious passion for what he does
How is this the fault of the press? The press wouldn’t have a story were it not for his coworkers griping about it in interviews. I’m not a huge fan of the press but people need to stop blaming them for everything! BTW, I am a huge fan of Jeremy and I felt his pain when he said the stories hurt him.
Strong is about the work and in the day and age of celebrity, Instagram and playing to the audience that kind of laser focus feels odd and contrived to so many. It's like the person that buys something SHOWY to wear in an order to illicit compliments vs the person that just wants to look nice. They just don't get it and they likely never will. Understatement is dead.
@@racourdav I read the article and I don't remember seeing him in a negative light afterwards. I don't understand all the commotion about it.
@@sisiwasabi81 There were loud grumbling from Brian Cox mainly, saying that Jeremy basically gets on his nerves and others tolerate it but they love him, something along those lines. Of course the press picked it up because Cox is very vocal about it lol. I felt bad seeing Jeremy say how much it hurt him, I can really feel his hurt .
@@racourdav the New Yorker article is smarmy and genuinely condescending toward him and his process
As a struggling actor- you have no idea how elated it makes me to see someone in the industry that isn’t a nepo baby
They just invented a term for a persistent practice in Hollywood, a perennially incestuous industry-Douglas Fairbanks, Jr, Candace Bergen, Jamie Leigh Curtis, Marlo Thomas, Mia Farrow, Natasha Richardson, Laura Dern, Rashida Jones, Maya Rudolph, Tracee Ellis Ross, Melanie Griffith, Sam Robards, Kate Burton, Isabella Rossellini,Tatum O’Neal, Angelica Huston, Kiefer Sutherland, Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Liv Tyler, Drew Barrymore, etc. No one listed is below 40 years old. Don’t let social media paint a false narrative. Hollywood has always been welcoming to the offspring of famous actors. Every generation of actors has had to compete with them.
@@kd8752 Exactly, and I don’t find it awful or crazy that the children of actors want to do what they see their parents do for a living. As long as they’re good at what they do of course
Most successful actors aren't nepo babies.
way to deviate your failure into others.
Theee tree we literally so many actors in Hollywood that aren’t nepo babies. Enough with the defeatist attitude
He’s got such sincere eyes. There’s something so gentle and endearing about him- not pretentious at all.
people are afraid of full-throated sincerity and vulnerability because it's much easier to hide behind a veneer of ironic detachment or unseriousness. jeremy strong's dedication to his work is breathtakingly human and commendable
Such a committed and deeply talented artist, being vulnerable yet mature in his response about that trashy New Yorker profile - wish him all the best in his future work. Succession is easily one of the best TV shows of all time.
Easily. I can't imagine a show coming along that tops Succession for a long, long time.
Actors and musicians are traditionally horrible at expressing their connection to their art, because they are communicating via that craft. One thing I know…I absolutely CAN NOT do what they do. It’s a talent far beyond me. So a lot of respect to those who can do it.
What a terrific actor, seems like a humble dude as well. Wishing him nothing but the best post-Succession
'He made me hate him, then he died.' I've always felt a connection to Kendall...the constant striving to please an unpleaseable parent
Logan did it on purpose to make him tough
I think those of us who empathize with Kendall have that in common.
@@lynnhubbard844 and instead he raised four people who have no idea how to function in any meaningful way
@@lynnhubbard844 That's not a good way for a father to act, though
@@lettuceleaf186 very true! dysfunction
Strong acts so well in Succession that Kendall Roy feels like a real person. So yea if he method acts or not who cares. All that matters is the results.
totally agree! He DOES feel like a real person, which is why i can relate
Haha that bit with the house is THE most Kendall moment
Jeremy seems like someone who is completely emptionally genuine, never shys away from expressing how he feels
The Emmy campaign is on ❤ I love Jeremy. He's so talented.
Jeremy work is great, but he already got an Emmy so HBO will probably go for Kieran Culkin as lead role this season
Watch out for bill hader
@@likeanantelope1842 he is in comedy category
@@luiz-xc6th it's not about who hasn't got the emmy and who has. jeremy strong's acting is still more sublime, fascinating and accurate so far in this season in my opinion
Why no Golden Globes?
Jeremy is absolutely incredible in Succession. Deserves all the praise.
I'm late to the party with Succession. I recently started watching it, and I'm almost finished with Season 3. I think Jeremy Strong's performance stands out head & shoulders above the rest of this talented cast. He is really remarkable and when he's on screen, he owns whatever scene he's in.
Man, see if you can enjoy the final episodes rollercoaster with us.
I had no idea he won a scholarship to Yale! What a talent.
i watched all 3 season of Succession while I was suffering from Covid and in isolation. I’m now on episode 7 season 4 of the show, and i’m planning to watch the final 3 episodes once the show ends. I’m definitely going to miss it 😪
Kendall is such an interesting character. Hang on to your hat for s4.
Kieran Culkin is really really good too
Terrific actor. Loved him also in The Big Short. Hopefully he will land a big lead part in a movie someday and earn an Oscar. 🧡
ok wow --- the fact that he came from a loving home only serves to show what a tremendous actor he is!
A pure artist. ❤
This feels right… dramaturgically
He looks SO good with the shaved head!
Kendall is one of my favorite characters on the show. I absolutely love it. Mad respect for Jeremy Strong as an actor. Cheers to him. Can't wait to see where his next adventure takes him.
He’s a great actor. For a relatively minor role, he was great in Big Short and he’s been awesome in Succession. I’m a huge fan.
The cast of this series is pure perfection, so happy for his success, he definitely deserves it big time!
“There’s inherent value in just doing good work”
what an amazing guy. I'll never understand the bad rep he gets; he's not pretentious - he just loves his craft too much - he has strong feelings about it, and it shows in his perfomances.
He will win an Oscar one day
he is such an amazing actor and I cannot wait to see what he does next!
Our number one boy
Such a great actor. He portrays his ruthless character as a lost, sad liile boy still seeking his father's approval. Strong performance.
He's a phenomenal actor.
I hope he gets that Tony soon and then after that he can focus on the Oscar!
Ugh he’s the best. It’s amazing watching him. Absolutely one of the best EVER.
🙌 yes!!
It’s an absolute joy to see his layered and moving performance in succession
Jeremy Strong is phenomenal. I am so much more impressed with him after this interview. His work and its excellence speaks for itself.
That New Yorker piece by that journalist was the ultimate betrayal of trust that I’ve ever seen between a journalist and actor/artist, completely betrayed the sense of the openness that Jeremy allowed them just to make him look as Jeremy says ‘foolish’ which was so unfair. Yes, his approach might be unorthodox but it delivers outstanding results on Succession every week. Look forward to what he does next.
Bingo!! You nailed the reason that article angered me so much
I love him. I respect him. LONG LIFE to our number one boy ❤️🥹🫡
His work is so brilliant in this role that will problably not be enough recognized by people. Hopefully this role gives Jeremy a lot of great opportunities in movies and more people will be able to see such a talent in action.
He's the real deal
One of the most intelligent, brave, emotionally in-tune artists of our generation. I love this man.
Such a terrific actor. Yes give the man an Emmy, he surely deserves it. And I hope one day he will win an Oscar.
He's struggled the way actors used to, not like now where everyone went to an expensive private school or has some sort of connection to the industry. Probably only one of the few real actors out there.
Jeremy’s process works for him. Everyone else should worry about their process and performance. Jeremy is clearly committed to his art and it is beautiful.
The more you see him the more his grace becomes undeniable. Bring him his roses you cowards.
Great job Jeremy Strong! We love what you’ve put into Succession. ❤
It's been mentioned a few times here... he's so believable in the role. He literally brought his character to life.
"I don't want to monumentalize it, but in a way, these are like the waters of childhood"
There will always be critics, and in the age of social media anonymity, often harsh; do you with passion and never apologize for your method, your approach, success your way (as he responds that he wouldn’t change how he approached this role). We’re each given the gift of life to live your way, perfectly express yourself your way; it’s your story to write…bravo, Jeremy Strong, for a wonderful performance, it inspired me!
Love love love his commitment to his craft. Manifesting an Oscar as we speak 🥂🙏🏼
He’s an amazing actor - really admire his dedication to the craft.
My number one boy
Jeremy Strong is the real deal. Love Succession!
He´s an artist. Values his craft. Hats off to that.
He was awesome as Ken. Loved that show. The unattainable approval of the proverbial father figure haunts us all.
He's honestly one of the best actors of our time. Doesn't matter if he's method, he's great.
Team Jeremy! He's literally the best thing about this show - infinitely watchable and masterful in his portrayal of Kendall. Haters can hate but they can't knock his brilliance.
One of the finest actors in the world.
amazing interview ! we can see that jeremy is passionate about his work, hope to see him win the emmy.
I would give anything to be back stage during one of his shows.
He's wonderful and he did not deserve that treatment. His acting is sublime. Killin' it, Jeremy!
We love you Jeremy, Your sincerity and passion is beautiful.
Just give the man his Emmy.
Honestly, though. He's an amazing actor.
He's outstanding!!!
I love him. Hes so gentle
He'll always be "Vinny" (The Big Short) to me. Loved that character and thought he delivered it very well. Very much enjoyed the movie.
Jeremy, after LOVING the entire 4th season of succession, I'm now binging the entire show. Halfway thru season 2 and I'm still convinced your acting is excellent. The subtleties that convey Kendall's struggle...just superb acting. I dont care what your method is, its great stuff! All the best!
My favorite part of this interview is seeing him talk in complete sentences!
i love that the most controversial things about Jeremy Strong is "does he work too intense?"
He made the show to me in many ways. Couldn’t imagine anyone else in that role
Jeremy your Awesome and a great actor F**K THE CRITICS !
Do the critics not like him ? I don’t read any of that just know I like this show LOTS and that rare
@@nadagabri5783 To put it in a nutshell, he has been mocked for putting an immense ammount of effort on Kendall's character, they portrayed him as a delusional average actor. Those people are vultures, if really happy he's getting a lot of praise.
@@mateusssssss567 Thanks for the reply, I didn’t know that yet I do agree with some of the sentiment. I saw him in an interview & they walked by his childhood house supposedly for the first time. He acted as if he could not speak, made it into this traumatic event (as if it wasn’t preplanned). I found it very cringe, almost laughable. Love love the show, he is good, as is everyone else, yet to me no super star. If any one a superstar in this series it’s 👉 Brian Cox. Yet an excellent top tier cast all around no doubt.
@@nadagabri5783 I think you're talking about the very video you've just commented under. But yeah, I've seen a couple of his interviews and he can come across as a little fake or pretencious. What I find unfair is for critics to pick on him and his methods when it comes to acting. He's proven to be an immensely talented actor. No one picks on Joaquin Phoenix or Daniel Day Lewis for their mega commitment on roles, but it seems like an actor seen as a little guy isn't allowed to do the same. I don't really agree on Brian Cox being a superstar though. Talented actor for sure, but he's approaching his retirement and hasn't landed a huge role in his entire career to this day.
@@mateusssssss567 it might be this vid you are prob correct, i think Logan is a pretty significant role, same with breaking bad and Brian Cranston. Both possibly roles of a life time. I don’t know BC career resume yet Im sure quite impressive. Obviously you love this guy Jeremy Ok. I get it. to each their own. I can see why others might find his personality pretentious and a bit cringe yet no question he is great in this show as are his co stars. As a side note I don’t fine Joaquin to be pretentious like this guy is and JP has done superior work so there’s that to.
He was fantastic in ‘The Big Short’.
Whatta great actor, anyone laughing at his method doesn’t have an ounce of his talent
Jeremy Strong is a good guy. The bloggers, who are almost entirely all from extremely privileged backgrounds, just couldn't let a working class guy rise like Jeremy has despite how talented he is. So they had to try and hit him and take him down. But his talent will see him through.
Amazing actor. Love Jeremy Strong.
the number 1 boy fr
I hope his career and life is fruitful and fulfilling. Our number one boy
Jeremy Strong is one of my favorite actors and I love him so much! I didn’t even know him until I started watching succession and while I first couldn’t stand him in the series, over time/espisodes I just fell in love with him. It is disheartening to hear that he was criticized and critiqued and that it upset him. Here is an actor who takes his role seriously and gets dejected for his craftsmanship. I think it is just jealousy, honestly. So there you go. I love that he said he wouldn’t change anything. He’s the best. He brought Kendall to life. And gave us 4 wonderful seasons of succession! Can’t wait to see him get better and better. His future is looking bright.
michael schulman you will be dealt with, comments from that article just limit us they are the reason we haven't been able to fully delve in our creativity and love for our work the way jeremy does for his. in a fear of being shamed for it. love jeremy hes so awesome hope he never changes and keeps bringing so much soul to other projects he'll work in the future.
“You will be dealt with”? This is a threat; you might want to reconsider going on the record as threatening someone.
@@wabashcannonball its an internet slang phrase
No, it’s a literal threat. It is the very definition of a threat, and can get you reported. That’s not a threat; it’s a promise, in response to your threat.
@@wabashcannonball lol dude relax
Jeremy é um ator grandioso, espero vê-lo em breve. Kendall chegou em um nível absurdo, trabalho impecável. ❤
Let the man do his thing? Acting is LITERALLY HIS JOB. Why are people hating on an actor trying to do a good job ACTING.
"Relieved and Released." -- He's a straight up guy. He deserves all of the opportunity that's coming at him, as well as his break from this character, have a seat Sir and do whatever makes you happy. Why on Earth are the method(s) he chooses to work, with great results, controversial. It's none of our business.
Had no idea there was that negative NYT article about him - glad it never hit my radar, wouldn't have read it anyways. His work speaks for him, Emmy was well deserved.
It basically mocked his whole process and how he gets so entrenched in his roles. It made me pretty angry to read it because you could tell he was being very open with the writer, and they basically mocked him.
Brilliant actor love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Not him stopping right in front of his childhood house like 🧍🏻♂️🧍🏻♂️🧍🏻♂️
A great actor >__< Who will bring many more characters to live in the years to come
Magnificent artist and so eloquent & lovely in person!
Big feelings, big big feelings.
This guy was awesome in The Big Short.
I love this man!
He is a brilliant and amazing actor
If it weren’t for his creative process succession wouldn’t be the masterpiece that it is. Everything has to align for the amazing performances.
What a great interview
As much as I would love to see Succession carry on, for Jeremy Strong's sake, I am glad it is ending. Knowing how he prepared for his role, the burden of portraying Kendall Roy had to have had a trickle affect in his personal life. Jeremy is a remarkably gifted actor. I wish him well in all his future work. I cannot wait to see what he does next.
Bravo, Jeremy. You brought a legendary character from the page to the screen.
Saw him in NEW JERUSALEM in 2008, starring as Spinoza and holding his own with Richard Easton, Fyvush Finkel, David Garrison, and other theater heavyweights. Made a strong impression then, and the Classic Stage Company probably pays a bit more than $50/week, but his point stands.
i love the way he talks, so measured and introspective
Big feelings. Big, big feelings. Big feelings. Big feelings.
He’s one of the best actors of our time
Deep, talent- talent pure and simple.
Love the Arnold Arboretum and hope his father is proud. He's a really heartfelt actor.
He embodies living in New York so well on the show. The argument he got in with Madsen about New York seems like he meant to be defensive because he really struggled to make it here
Jeremy is a rare gem in hollowed show biz.
If they ever make a movie about Joe Bastianich for some reason, I want this guy to play him.
