Snake Eater was one of the best experiences of my 40 years of gaming. It took me forever to pull that trigger at the end. I kept hoping some other option would present itself.
1. Falcons impresion of Solid Snake is better then i would have expected. 2. Would you guys consider doing a list of "black sheep of the series" games and what made them stick out.
@@INSOMNIAREXGive AC 4 (Black Flag) a shot. It's a pretty decent AC game, much better than 3, and it's a fantastic pirate simulator. The boat combat is really fun, too!
@croppinthechoches9396 Blackflag is the best pirate game I've ever played the Assassins vs Templar stuff is kind of wedged in there & it takes you out of the animus that let's you relive Edward's life as a nobody first person view Abstergo employee but the rest is a great pirate game. That's where Ubisoft got the idea to make Skull & Bones but doubt they will be able to out do AC BlackFlag.
3:36 Dark Cloud 2 had a fairly decent character switching setup, in 2002. Press L3 to switch between your two characters (Max and Monica), and press R3 to switch to their alternate forms-a monster transformation for Monica, and the mini mech Ridepod for Max. Its only problem was that you _had_ to be Max/Monica to swap between characters, not the Ridepod/Monster form.
I was debating mentioning this, and even the Mana franchise (I gotta stop calling it Seiken Densetsu now) and Secret of Evermore as they also allowed you to swap your controlled character on the fly. However, despite being unfamiliar with Grand Theft Auto in general (much less a specific title) I will give it props for the fact that the other characters appear to actually be doing things within the game world when they aren't being controlled and/or directly aiding the character the player is controlling (at least, that's the impression I got from the video snippet). That was at least something new.
@@RazmoudahI mean, the other characters in V really weren't doing much from an RPG or character progression sort of way, just an ambient, depth providing sort of action that made the world look lived in and the characters look like they had lives. Though, swapping to Trevor might land you in a cop chase, so that's actually a bit involved
My favourite implementation of character switching in real time is the Conflict series. Controlling or ordering the 4 squad members was smooth and tactical feeling, it was also fun controlling 2 soldiers each in split screen co-op
Character switch in GTA was interesting because they're not always where you left them, so they went and had a life while you played as the other character. Trevor had the funniest switches
I'm in "overtime" in GTA V (again), casually finishing up some stuff and the last time I switched to Trevor he was in hot pursuit with the cops; not very casual. I hated it though when in my first play through he spawned at a beach and one of his places was robbed: there was just no vehicle around! That - and all those robberies in general - made me kind of weary to purchase businesses.
11:30 glad to hear you mentioned one of the two most forgotten original games. The other is the original GTA for PC (much different than what GTA became lol) you should do an entire list like that. Forgotten origin games unrecognizable from their popular counterparts.
I had Burnout 3 with the ps2 steering wheel, pedals and shift stick.. soooo many fun hours on that game. Winning never mattered, it was pure mayhem and I loved every hour of it.
I wish more games had the player wheel option where you could switch between characters and attack levels and missions differently. Each character having different strengths, weaknesses and different weapons.
Another game changing ability in AC games is bird vision. No more purchasing treasure maps, you just detect all the enemies, objects and treasures from far far away. Plus birds can distract enemies.
For a second I was so confused because I thought you meant eagle vision and was about to say "how the hell did you miss label the MAIN ability in the game" then I realized you meant the new PHYSICAL bird view you can have.
I think Bullet Time from the Max Payne games should get an honourable mention. It wasn't the first to invent it, but it popularised it so much that every action shooter (especially Call of Duty) replicated it by giving a slow-mo section somewhere in their games. Still, I loved the list. Good work as usual, Falcon.
The fact it is called bullet time is from that game. But similar to that, Dishonored's blink would also qualify that way. The "problem" for this list is that it didn't change the franchise, since they started with that ability from the start
Honestly killing enemies to get health is always the height of gameplay for me. It turns the big bad enemies from a nightmare to "come here healthpack."
It is definitely not always the height of gameplay as you learn in Star Wars the Force Awakens where it basically forces you to play cheese mode just to survive.
Monster hunter:world introducing a lot of ways to interact with the map like sliding down slopes and swinging wall jumping off partially climable surfaces was a big step for the franchise.
I remember when Burnout 3 came out, but I didn't have enough to get it, so I bought Burnout 1. The disappointment I had when I realized that the crashing wasn't there was immense. It was fun, but it wasn't at all what I had hoped for when I started hitting other cars. Awesome video!
15:06 i’d say also in THUG1 being able to get off the board and walk around felt revolutionary and i dont think they could make a new skateboarding game where you are confined to the board (i’m sure there’s been some but at the time it felt like that would never happen again)
Grapnel boost in Arkham City. Granted, there would be no use for it in Asylum because of how small and narrow the game's environments are, but it became a staple in the series after that, and the key to traversing the map effectively.
3:54 falcon always says "eye-terate" instead of "it-erate", and it has driven me nuts every time, but here he literally says iterate correctly in the next sentence, like wtf...?
Technically speaking, the 1st Ratchet & Clank on PS2 did have strafing. But it's only after getting the thrusterpack upgrade for Clank. But even them, it's NOT ideal, when compared to how strafing works in the rest of the series. Still, a very smart move on Insomniac's part for evolving the series to where it is today!
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3, I think, was more revolutionary when it added reverts. That meant you not only could extend grinds, but send combos into the air as well.
@@Hawk_of_Battle Nope, you need to revert before using the manual. So literally "there" it is more important because it can be used without any manual at all if the 2 QPs are close enough
Great list, as always! I was surprised that the sword fighting mechanic introduced in Ubisoft's Prince of Persia wasn't mentioned. Otherwise, love the videos!
About boss weapons and unique weapons both having special abilities in FromSoftware games, it has been a big thing since King's Field back in the playstation 1 era. The thing that was new here is not those special abilities for special weapons. The new thing is normal weapons having special abilities (even if less special ones than for special weapons), and this led to being able to switch those normal weapon abilities in Elden Ring (and the special weapons cannot have their abilities switched).
With Metal Gear Solid, Snake said in 4 that Big Boss trained him in CQC, but he stopped using it after learning who Big Boss really is. CQC gained a resurgence in 4. Snake says that everybody learned by reading about it, but he learned by doing. He says that when people come at him with their cookie cutter version of CQC, his body just reacts and that's why he uses it now. It's not the best explanation of why he doesn't use it, but all in all, it's the best they could have done.

Burnout 3!!! I remember feeling so accomplished when I finally got the fire truck. You had to have ten major crashes to finally unlock it and finally getting it *chefs kiss*.
There were a few puzzlers that required swapping between a cast of playable characters (lost vikings being an oldie example) but generally not something that went beyond it other than squad tactics games like the commandos series.
I really think the addition of a mount in the Souls series is also something that changed the game and will probably change the series. Elden Ring wanted to be big and the mount allowed that game to reach as far as it could. It was also done in the perfect way of using an item so you can do it with a lot of ease as well as intentional, not really a big fan of a dedicated button like R3.
I hope it wont change anything, while the game was good with best combat in series, the open world suck, it is dead and boring, having huge open world without towns and villages and some events is meh. I had lot of fun experiencing it the 1st time, tho closer to end i was fed up with it, but replaying, even year later, it s too borring. Atleast they should ve made the game smaller, so they wouldn t have to reuse bosses. Some would say rush the legacy dungeons and take only what you need for build, but that doesn t sit well with me, others would say, you played 140hours 1st run the game is not meant to be replayed, The others are probably right, but some nice toys are unlocked by the end and it is shame not having fun using them. TLDR: Open world is meh, i hope for non linear interconnected world next.
Not really an ability but the ping feature of League of Legends were ahead of its time. They first introduced contextual pings then Apex implemented it in an FPS environment which also was well done
seeing the burnout instantly reminded me of flatout. the rag doll dart game was hilarious and so much fun. and the demo derby as well. such a gem of a game
Its still amazing to me how copy abilities were not from the original game. They have became so iconic that the idea of kirby game without some sort of a version of them feels almost unthinkable.
When I played the crash mode for the first time, I stopped playing the rest of the game all together for quite a while lol. The crash mode was just so much fun.
Funny, i played all the assassin games from 1 - 5 (i forgot the name of the second pirate that becomes a templar) . And for the most part i only used the smoke granades for the cahllenges of the missions hahaha
I agree with all of these except from the bonus. Ratchet and Clank 1 did have a strafing mechanic however you had to unlock the thrusterpack first. If you double crouched the thrusterpack would then float you above the floor and shoot in the direction the camera was facing in, but you could move in whichever direction you liked. I know its not the same as the later games (2 onwards) but its still technically strafing, even if it was locked behind something you had to pay for during the game itself.
Horizon Forbidden West added multiple abilities as you played. Shield Wing, underwater breathing mask, ability to fly on a mount…. Literally game-changing.
My personal favorite is Kindom Hearts 2's Forms. It vastly changed how the game was played and added so much depth to combat. It was included in nearly every KH game since then, whether as Styles of Keyblade Transformations.
15:51 Pretty sure he was meant to be pink, but there was a bit of a dispute between Sakurai and Miyamoto on whether Kirby should be Pink or Yellow, so since they couldn't decide at the time, they just made Kirby white on the box art, but Sakurai ended up winnin the debate. Could be wrong, though.
I'd wanna include two, both started by one game and bled into multiple franchises. Splinter Cell Conviction's Mark and Execute, and Last Known Position (specifically the ghost outline). Carried over to the future splinter cell and assassin's creed games, that Im aware of. haven't played other recent ubisoft games, so I can't speak on that. For mark and execute, it took multiple forms in the AC franchise, but only appeared post 2010, release year of Conviction.
Loved the video, one small correction, Burnout 2 was the first with a crash mode. I remember buying the game after seeing the mode used in that old G4 arena show 😊
Really thought Bioshock 2 did a better job with plasmid upgrades and tonics from 1, not to mention updates to combat and weapon modifications. Infinite had very few improvements, but at least they tried some new things. Also, I guess Falcon is Flying Snake.
20 years skating and manuals are the only trick I can do well and consistently. It's crazy funny how many times I've been cheered on for just a manual, but darn do I do go far
GTA being ahead of its time is an understatement. 10 years old. Not even last Gen but last last Gen. I mean I know the version we play now is just last gen but the game first came out for 360 and PS3. And no first person youngins. Crazy how much that game holds up. Like I watched this guy playing a zombie survival mod to GTA 5 and damn if it didn’t look like the best zombie survival game on the market. Light on story of course because it’s a mod but the mechanics of GTA and add zombies and a hunger meter etc. Beat zombie survival game there is…
I played Kirby so much in the 90s and when my son, 20 years later, was playing Kirby games where you steal powers I swear I thought they got the idea from Smash Bros. lol
I'm pretty sure Burnout 2 introduced crash mode. Burnout 3 is better known for the takedowns during standard races, which are pretty awesome by the way.
I thought you'd mention Zelda. Ever since Link became able to climb almost anything (and thus go almost anywhere), it's quite hard to imagine the franchise without that kind of freedom. Whereas I could do without all the rest (bullet time, tablet or zonai powers, etc.)
I really want a remake of the original DMC with style switching and plays similar to DMC5, get rid of the swimming parts and rework some of the weapons. Also it should open with the player controlling Vergil fighting his way to Mundus and then obviously failing against him. Then it continues with the events of the original and when you finish the story, you unlock the ability to play the whole story as Vergil
Speaking of strafing, I remember in the instruction manual for Transformers 2004 on PS2 (remember instruction manuals?) in the controls section, they actually point out that you can strafe in the game. I was too young to realize that that must have been a new development in games, so I just thought it was weird for them to point it out. I was like "yeah, obviously I can walk sideways, duh."
Snake Eater was one of the best experiences of my 40 years of gaming. It took me forever to pull that trigger at the end. I kept hoping some other option would present itself.

Funny, i played all the assassin games from 1 - 5 (i forgot the name of the second pirate that becomes a templar) . And for the most part i only used the smoke granades for the cahllenges of the missions hahaha
Thanks, Falcon. Your avatar and commentary always make me laugh 😂
14:08 You caused so much damage! GOOD JOB!
14:38 Mario couldn't jump in Wrecking Crew.
The Crash Mode minigame in Burnout Takedown was so much fun. My friends and I spent HOURS taking turns trying to get the biggest crashes.
Horizon Forbidden West added multiple abilities as you played. Shield Wing, underwater breathing mask, ability to fly on a mount…. Literally game-changing.
Kirby's Dreamland on the Gameboy was still an amazing game for it's time. It was still incredibly gun without copy abilities.
3:16 that sound is just amazing
My personal favorite is Kindom Hearts 2's Forms. It vastly changed how the game was played and added so much depth to combat. It was included in nearly every KH game since then, whether as Styles of Keyblade Transformations.
Personally, I would say Guns For Hire is the best mechanism in Far Cry . You can wipe out and outpost in under a minute
Dude, your snake voice was pretty on point! David Hayter himself would be impressed 😂
YES, STRAFING. Crazy how one simple mechanic can change the feel of a game.
Loved Burnout Takedown. Wish it was on PS4..😢😊
Loved the video, one small correction, Burnout 2 was the first with a crash mode. I remember buying the game after seeing the mode used in that old G4 arena show 😊
Hello Gameranx, I really enjoy your videos!
Hey, thanks!
Really thought Bioshock 2 did a better job with plasmid upgrades and tonics from 1, not to mention updates to combat and weapon modifications. Infinite had very few improvements, but at least they tried some new things.
Also, I guess Falcon is Flying Snake.
Seriously, 2 never gets enough love. Probably my fave
Being able to go prone in Last of Us 2 I found to be pretty game-changing.
Amazing video gameranx.
Burnout takedown was so satisfying, also Falcon's impression of Solid Snake had me cracking up it was so good!
I feel so sad, I've never had a chance to play GTA V 😢😢😢
And I love GTA games 😔
20 years skating and manuals are the only trick I can do well and consistently. It's crazy funny how many times I've been cheered on for just a manual, but darn do I do go far
That was a great impression of Solid Snake, i could see Snake having a convo with a Falcon out in the wilds while on a mission
Good to know that gamerankx knows they’re now a meal channel. ❤️
Beat zombie survival game there is…
I played Kirby so much in the 90s and when my son, 20 years later, was playing Kirby games where you steal powers I swear I thought they got the idea from Smash Bros. lol
The CQC water cooler skit was gold 😂😂
I'm pretty sure Burnout 2 introduced crash mode. Burnout 3 is better known for the takedowns during standard races, which are pretty awesome by the way.
I beat all of DS3 and never used a weapon art once… not even sure I knew how. Yet, it was a huge part of ER!
Lmao the sonic build 😂😂😂
I thought you'd mention Zelda. Ever since Link became able to climb almost anything (and thus go almost anywhere), it's quite hard to imagine the franchise without that kind of freedom. Whereas I could do without all the rest (bullet time, tablet or zonai powers, etc.)
I just beat Doom Eternal for the third time earlier this year. Thanks to this video, I'm reinstalling to go for a fourth time lol
I barely noticed CQC in MGS3. I remember the cutscene talking about it, but I still played the game like it was 1 and 2
Summons in the Final Fantasy series. They're so synonymous with FF that you'd be forgiven if you didn't know FF I and FF II didn't feature summoning.
Hi Gameranx! Any suggestions on ASUS Rog Ally? Thinking of buying it 🤔
Grappling hook is becoming the signature of Just Cause series.
I think I got you here Falcon, Gran Turismo 6 launched exclusively on the PS3 one month after the PS4 release
I'm playing Just Cause 2 now and Yeah that grapple is super sweet.
I'm here for the watercooler talk with Snake.
in GunZ, the developers never meant for K-style but it gave the game huge longevity in general
