The longest I've survived is 42 days before a bear said "oh look a happy meal with legs," and proceeded to maul me to the point of using dental records to identify me.
this comment is so violently hilarious it made me get back on TLD
Unhappy meal more like
ii just had my best run so far, around 56 days.. fell into water and instead of lighting a fire first i started building the hut and froze to death
As soon as I saw the title I was like "Oh, that's such a good idea for a video!"
Ha, same!
aww man, this video wasn't what I thought it would be. I didn't realize you were just going to sit in the depot forever. I thought it was going to be how long you could survive in a single region.
Will do that too, but rules need to be in place for that because of matches and scurvy. In most non-connector regions you can survive forever
same here haha
I’m on day five of the flu, double pneumonia kicking in, and this is the PERFECT TIME for this video to drop! Amazing distraction, especially since I don’t feel like playing right now. I try to save some of your videos in reserve for when I feel terrible, but five days is a long time to be in bed, so I’m really happy for the content!
get well soon!
@@sledgemain6230Aww thanks, that’s really kind of you. ☺️
Hoping you get better asap ^^
@@Qwerty-ff3nkThank you! Im in breathing treatments and they’re helping a lot! 😊
idk ab u but i always end up watching tld videos when i'm sick
Interesting comparison. The first time I played interloper for the 1 day challenge, I thought "how hard can it be ?" the answer is: brutally hard, as you are not even warm in beds in most indoor locations.
I love the idea of limiting yourself to just one or a few zones. I tried a run where I allowed myself to loot two zones, then "move in" to a third, where I was not allowed to leave. Really fun stuff!
Where did you move in ?
I’d guess bleak inlet (I might be confusing BI and desolation point) for the easy forge and maybe base in light house?
Idk if I could do it I need my coastal highway but I also need a forge if I’m not allowed to leave 😂
This is a great insight to a similar thing I've been working on. How long can you survive in different chapters of the story mode. Game locks you out of half your stuff and restricts you to a small map area. It's an interesting challenge especially in the earlier areas that are a glorified tutorial.
When I first started playing I spent HUGE amounts of time in each chapter learning the maps and figuring things out, it helped immensely in the long run when I got big into survival.
You could actually use summary to get hours. Hours inside match almost the time you've survived. (Plus of course time of walking from spawn).
pilgrim 137h
voyager 107h
stalker 72h
interlooper 4h
interlooper + 7h
You are correct, forgot about that. Thanks!
32:50 "a follow-up study"
heh, actual scientist confirmed.
lovely idea. your intro music immediately makes want to prepare a cup of coffee and get comfortable :)
i might try an interloper run limited to one region.. that would mean no forge of course, but hey, interesting how long i will be able to survive on just fishing and rabbits..
UPD. i spawned in blackrock :(
I love your videos, i mostly have them in background when i play the long dark, but i love how i can learn something new because i dont have as much time played as you
Using the cloth to make gloves/hat when you don't have any is better than repairing most items
Brilliant video 👍🏻
Your intro music always makes me feel happy and smile, it's so chill 🙂
Hope everyone is feeling better at home dude 👍🏻
It's funny how the devs made the affliction that lowers the max fatigue but they never put a name or a descripcion because they don't expected to people to go this far
I love these challenges. Epic video
Interesting experiment, Zak. Great video.
ooooo science/experimental Zak video very nice! I'd LOVE to also see this with that mod you spoke about that would have you spawn in with all the same exact stuff to see how you fair between the difficulties that way....really I'll watch anything you put out lol BUT as a semi still newbie in the Long Dark I do LOVE seeing these types of videos to really show how the different difficulties play & how a more pro player would attempt each
Amazing video👍🏾
Good content Zak. So good I watched it twice. I'm not playing now due to game killing me unexpectedly but I may give it another go. Game can be so brutal suddenly just when you think your doing so well after putting in so much time. But I do enjoy watching your videos. Hope you recover fully from your cold. My son and daughters with grandkids all are recovering from covid and hoping I don't get it.
Great idea. Good video.
I spawned in Coastal Highway on Voyageur and have been managing to be mostly self-sufficient. I think Coastal has great opportunities.
I stay in the "Coastal houses" in the east, in the house across the gas-station. Workbench across the road, fishing huts everywhere, plenty of rabbit spawns and quite a few places to loot.
Traversing the map is quite easy, because of the ice. You have a nice overview of the lake which makes it easier to avoid predators. Also corpses will show up more clearly as opposed to in a forest or the mountains.
Great idea for a series - you can do each region.
I love these little "how long can I survive when X" tests in TLD! It's really interesting to see what kills you based on the restrictions, like how in this video it was temperature for Interloper, but hunger and thirst in the others.
thank you for the knowledge
now i know what i got to do for the next hour and half
I was actually semi surprised to see just how drastic the change is from stalker to interloper, because I mainly play a custom between stalker/loper. Very interesting comparison.
You could have broken up that chair for some extra firewood, and depending on cloth amounts, could have made gloves
I tried - it cant be. Need a hatchet or hammer.
@@Zaknafein One of the "Well Made" chairs
Pretty sure loot tables are messed up for custom. Seems to be much more loot compared to non-custom on the same difficulty.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! You are too kind!
43:34 in interloper at least, a full hydration goes away in 6h awake, and 10h asleep. I don't know how this translates in other difficulties.
There is a way to live several hours longer in the "Interloper plus" section, which I'll leave as an exercise to the reader :P
(same rules, you can't go back outside)
Hint: Thirst isn't what kills you
1:03:27 If you have a fire going inside, you can sleep in the closest truck and be warm :)
there is an RNG match spawn for one of the cars so this could be a fun challenge. Of course, you'll eventually die to scurvy I guess.
I tried that in a run I didnt record, but for me it wasnt warm enough.
@@Zaknafein That makes sense, you're at the outer edge of the fire so it needs to be really warm. Probably would need to amass a large amount of sticks.
I only did it once in early Interloper, it's possible that as the world gets colder and clothing degrades, it would stop working at all even with the hottest possible fire. I may test it one day.
Transfer Pass IS one of the Locations where the Bedroll can spawn on Inter. I tried a single region Survivor challenge a few weeks back and the Bedroll was in the station. It technically was NOT a single region survivor because I started in Far Range Branch Line but the Idea was to see IF it was possible to be self sufficant in TP and yeah after 40 days I decided it was
Hello fellow zaknafein’s!
You can also use the food you spawn with to heal. So get some damage from thirst and go sleep while you still have calories to heal to full
Isnt that what I did, though?
@@ZaknafeinI am talking about the food from your starting bar before you get hungry. For example at 37:20 you could have drank a bit of water and slept to get the health to full. Its a minor thing so probably would have just added few hours more to end times
When I posted it I didnt see yet you do that on higher dificulties
@@omerbasicigor ah I see. Yes that could be optimized better
A small clarification... For custom, the Baseline Resources setting will determine the loot available in the world (Low = Interloper -> Very High = Pilgrim). The Starting Gear settings will determine what's in your inventory at the beginning. So starting with a bedroll and matches on Interloper will be based purely on your Starting Gear setting, not the Baseline setting.
Isnt that what I said, though? :) I adjusted that
Sorry, maybe I just misunderstood. Great video! I like the quantitative method you used here to illustrate the difficulties.
In easier difficulty, as long as you get the bow and mag glass you can stay anywhere forever
Mag lens sure, but bow would break
i keep repeating this same advice to a lot of people: moving or death, so this is pretty interesting evidence
Idk about the move or did man
I managed to get indefinite survival set up in coastal highway
Use heavy hammer to break fishing holes and use washed up hatchets for Fir firewood to repair the hammer
Kill rabbits and whatnot for guts (a bear will make so much fishing line)
I've managed to survive 50 days on stalker at forsaken airfield without getting hungry. Although there were some cattails to eat, I've left to get backpack upgrades/crampons/etc... so yea, interesting challenge for sure
*I was restricted by location, not jusa a building
"how much harder is interloper compared to pilgrim?" "bout 5 days 11 hours"
Laughing as your describe doing case studies vs a more thorough trial as a fellow professional XD
30:29 that moment i knew, u wouldnt resist but use it to map the area...
I still think there should be a proper difficulty between stalker and interloper. Custom options don't give enough control over loot tables and starting equipment. Everything available in stalker should be available, but good items (like tools/guns, ammunition, and warm clothing) should be much more rare than in stalker. You should start with less powerful loot than stalker (ie no bedrolls matches).
The point is, custom game just let's you pick which parts are like stalker and which parts are like interloper. It doesn't give the right adjustments to make a proper in-between of the two. Plus you can't unlock feats in custom which is a bummer.
You could probably mod this in but I genuinely feel it would be a great addition to the base game.
Not trying to be a jerk or anything but both the things you listed as problems can be changed in custom settings
“Loose item availability” and” spawn gear allocation “
That is if I’m remembering the names correctly
Hi Zak. Hope all is well 😌
I’ve never really had to replace or worry about my bedrolls, they hardly drop in status for me. And I play medium and hard difficulty most of the time.
Basically there are three different games in the long dark. Wintermute, normal survival, and masochist mode!
Thanks, as ever! Just goes to show how punishing Loper is😢
Regardless of the tablets you can still drink non-boiled water, especially for this experiment
Question: What is the advantage to not sleeping some during the initial run-your-health-down on Pilgrim and Voyager? It would degrade the bedroll a little more, but I wouldn't think that would have mattered in those difficulties, and wouldn't you have been able to last longer before you health was so low you have to eat and sleep?
That is interesting about the fatigue drain being a little lower on Interloper. I have been doing a (attempted) 500-day Pilgrim run while I've been watching your 500-day Interloper run and I was wondering why your Astrid didn't seem to tire as fast as my Astrid did. I guess that's why.
Watching this has made me feel a lot more confident about exploring the aurora mine in my aforementioned Pilgrim run. If you can survive over 5 days on a can of soda and a granola bar, I imagine that just my normal loadout of crackers and energy bars could probably carry me through to the next aurora in a pinch as long as I brought enough coal for water (not that I would try it -- I'd bring plenty of extra food -- but I carry way too much food around!)
The run could be optimized by sleeping more in the beginning. These runs were mostly for comparison reasons.
On pilgrim you made a small mistake. You ate 550 cal but only used 450 for sleeping 12h. You could have regenerated more HP for the 100 cal. I guess that would bring you to 6 full days.
Also shouldn't you sleep as much as possible? You loose 2x less calories during sleep compared to passing time which would kill you slower.
Yes it could certainly be optimised better
I have accepted death, I embrace it. I would just sit down and enjoy the ride.
I wonder how long you could service on Loper if you were warm. The cold is the real killer in this game. There was a fair about of time on stalker Zak had only a +1 or +0 warmth bonus, so one pice of clothing can make a huge difference.
Would you have been able to prevent the hypothermia for longer on looper, by making head and hand wraps from the towel and some other clothes torn to rags?
I didnt have a sewing kit, but even if I did I likely would have frozen while making it
@@Zaknafein You got one in the red suitcase at 1:15:34, But you are probably right that the cold would have gotten to you before you could finish. It's been a while since i played and i cant remember how long time it takes to make them. When that is said , I would also have no chance in interloper at all. XD I prefer the quiet stroll through Pilgrim.
But i just seemed to remember there could be a lesser chance of getting Hypothermia if you have head and hand protection?
@@Sofie72 no, it does not reducd hypothermia risk but removes frostbite risk (though the warmth does make get cold slightly slower, of course).
@@Zaknafein Ah! ha ha! Sorry for confusing the therms. XD Always learn something new watching your videos, :) Thank you for sharing :))
Voyageur!
You can survive multiple days at least if you start in the workshop in BR
Thanks to the forge and abundant fuel
Isn't that chair in the ticket office one of the kind you can break down without tools?
No, you can see me try it and you need a hatchet or hammer
Accelerate Very nice
i think at begining dont stay dehidrated for no reason because Warmth -450.0% -18.75%
Fatigue -25.0% -1.04%
Thirst -50.0% -2.08%
Hunger -25.0% -1.04%
43:32 u meantioned that though later kinda...
i see that is usefull only when u dont have any more food left to eat later, since u wanna lose condition as long u have any calories for later or something....
I’m curious about the different vitamin C content of cattails and if it’s regional or just random. I’ve seen vit C content ranging from minor to major (I think I’ve seen major). It might make a difference for long time survival and scurvy if certain regions have cattails with a higher vit C content.
The vitamin C content shown is if you ate the entire stack of cattails. So if you're carrying 100 of them it will say 'major' source of vitamin C. If you're carrying one it will say 'minor'. Kind of a dumb mechanic if you (probably don't) want my opinion but that's how it works.
@@knurlgnar24 oh wow. That’s so weird. I thought I was onto something but alas it’s nothing. Thanks for the info
16:00 - would it have made a difference had you dropped all your excess gear to get to the minimum possible weight before sleeping? Would that lower the calorie burn at all? Sorry if already asked, just came to me watching at this point and had time to type the comment but not filter through all of them below.
No that wont matter, perhaps unless you are very heavy
@@Zaknafeingotcha, thank you! Very, very limited exp in TLD here haha, so truly had no idea.
15:12 does drinking water at this point slow down the decreasing of the health bar, which increasing the survival time?
Yes
if there was a nuclear weapon launched, we would probably be the people that survived the longest since interested :D
Just one Question, at 45:15 to 45:25 in the Video, are you using some new Science time scale ? 😁😁😁
Haha not sure I follow :)
@@Zaknafein 4 hours 12 hours ... that gets to be added to the ZAK isms files ... great comparison video
@@kirksteven4316 oh whoops haha. Well you know, time is relative ^^

Hi, I have a question. Would you record a tutorial how to install mods and make them work? I tried watching some other videos, but it never worked for me. I think you can make it understandable.
I might - I dont use many mods, but if I have time I can make one
@@Zaknafein thanks for answering
Its Deadman only for me. Anything less than that is too easy...Hard core should try Outerloper even harder as you cannot go inside any building, only caves.
I’ve played on interloper and all difficulties below it but honestly I still stick to high loot (harsh conditions)custom
I think they need to add a decay setting you can turn on and off it makes me SO angry I can have a 100% condition coat in my locker inside of a building and it degrades in quality
IRL I have a used surplus military coat from the late 40’s it has been re stitched and f*cked up through and through it still is in great condition though and isn’t going to magically decay in 200-400 days
i basically died sooner than 5 days on any difficulty due to stupidity, i should rather stay inside....
Hi, how can i switch the world map to far territory? Do i have to play the campaign first?
You need to have the DLC and go there before you can spawn there
@@Zaknafein thanks ;)
On interloper why didn't you sleep in a car, went to the cave or the long coal building nearby the train station?
Because of two things:
1. The rule was that I couldnt leave so I couldnt go there.
2. The car is too cold.
Ah, I thought do not leave the area, not building @@Zaknafein
I am on ps4 and I wonder how to even get into the far territory 😂 Seriously, I have no idea. I also got the DLC, but on my map I cannot choose these maps 😮
You have to go there before you can choose them. You get there via Broken Railroad. Follow the train tracks
I love your videos. But why die with water on my body? I’d always remain hydrated if possible or never take hydration damage. Also who cares about the condition of the bedroll? We are dying. :). Would this buy me a few hours?
When the bedroll takes damage it gives less warmth
I like how this shows off TLD's dissimilarities from real life mainly to make it simpler.
But think about temperature. This isn't how it works. -1c is too cold and can cause hypothermia kinda fast, anything under like 20c will cause shivering if you're not doing anything.
Maybe you meant Fahrenheit? because as an Englishman 20c is shorts and t shirt beach weather..
Yeah isn't that room temp?@@Joey121lol
20°c is 68°f.
@@Joey121lol lmao I'm in the North of England and wear shorts in 9c 😂
@@Mr26464 Lol up here in Scotland 9c is frolicking weather even when wearing a Kilt
Please do the challenge 🫡👍👍👍
I literally thought about this a few fays ago, but then i was like "naaah, boring". Guess im wrong
I don't understand why you wouldn't sleep as much as possible early on, it takes less calories and you take dmg from being that tired. Unless im missing something it seems like a huge flaw in optimization.
It could have been even better, yes, but the idea was mostly to compare difficulties
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
