Been there u be back up in the hobby it’s like that with everything it’s called life.. I’ve been in the hobby over 18 years. It happens u back into it u will See. Take care and happy Father’s Day
Basically happens to us all at some point as others have said. You need to get your tank to it’s happy place then stop tinkering with it. Reef tanks love stability and routine over everything else for example I do a 10% water change every other week, Change filter socks clean glass and blow down rock work etc. every Monday and Thursday. And once every 4 weeks in conjunction with Monday water change and maintenance I change out the Rowaphos, Carbon and Purigen. I also dose All for Reef daily. This works for me and my Tanks are nice and stable with no issues and as long as I don’t deviate or start adding new corals or fish it just ticks over! I suggest you try and get your tank ticking over so it takes minimal time and effort on your part, have your wedding and come back to it later in the year and see how you feel. Hope you both have a great wedding 👍
Hi Neil , shame about the lost corals ,also sorry how you feel about reefing at the moment, I'm not surprised we've been in lockdown for a long time ,you've hat a good time on ya stag weekend, I know its like we're all free ,but don't rush into finishing the hobby ,cus I'm sure you'll regret it ,,so hang in there mate ,,happy reefing,,,p,s CONGRATULATIONS, on your upcoming wedding,,,,all the best ,,,👍
I agree, i do go through this phase, but i also have quite a few hobbies. It's an ecosystem, the best thing for a reef tank it's in "autopilot" mode when you don't have to do much but maintain it. Just let the reef be itself, without your interest.
congratulations on the engagement/wedding! sorry I haven't had much time to check out the videos of late, busy with some projects. obviously moving the tank to a cooler part of your home might not be so easy and I suspect you don't want to bust out 400-600 sterling for a chiller. I noticed that your tank is in the family room? It might be kind of an infringement for household members, but consider closing the curtains or blinds in the room. I used to change the lighting schedule during the hottest summer months so they turned on in the evening and off in the morning. Also a window AC unit turned on in the evening made things bearable for everyone and the tank(with temporary nighttime lighting schedule). Don't beat yourself up too much with losing interest, it happens. if you do take a break, I totally agree with the others, just hold on to your hardware and rock( you can let it dry out and reseed it or just store in a semi sealed plastic tub with bubbler or small powerhead, check on it once a month and add a pinch of fish flakes and not water testing required. add a weak light or not, make some rock and chuck it in there or not lol). if you do keep your rock in a tub, you could consider selling rocks to other reefers. Make rock/seed rock/sell rock hahaha, then you can "kind of" partially stay in the hobby...you will now probably have to ask permission from your wife. Just remember, if you totally get out of it you might have to go through negotiations with the wifey to get back in. Goodluck.
Thanks Scotty, I’m keeping the tank going. Was just a bit stressed at the time with the wedding preps etc. I’m back bow and will have a new vid out soon 🙂 I keep a load of frozen bottles in the freezer and when it gets hot I rotate them in the sump and I’m finding this is helping keep the temperature down along with two big fans. Tank is now stable again. Just going to take a break in adding new additions for now til I’m 100% happy with the parameters 🙂
Chin up, think we all go through it especially when the newness and excitement of it all wears off. Enjoy watching your vids and appreciate the honesty 👍
I was in process of shutting down my Reefer mate after my heavy fish loss. Sold all my corals, got a Reefer 250 with 2 fish and no corals ATM but I've decided to keep it going for a bit see how I feel later on. I got a feeling my interest will come back. But I totally understand what your going through. Stress is a big player and weddings are extremely stressful.
Thanks Neil. Good to see it’s not just me. I will definitely keep the tank running just not going to invest in it til I get the bug back. I think it’s the stress of the wedding mate. How you feeling about it now?
@@neilsreefaquarium9530 I'm feeling good about it ATM mate. I feel I need a reset, Ive got bored of torches and hammers, I could never get the Scape to look natural with too many contrasty colours, yes it looks beautiful but kinda fake looking. so I decided a new approach to reefing for me is in order. I'm basically going to do an all softy tank, I want lots of the same coral. Just gonna chuck in gsp, Xenia , muchrooms, leathers and let them grow how they want and see what happens.
The temp gets up slow don’t worry about it just as long it’s slow I unplug my heater and put my return to top for oxygen and evaporation also put my RODI water in refrigerator for top off
Hey Neil good to see an update… stick in there and perhaps grab an icp test to see if you have anything major going on there… busy family life and livestock loss will always weigh heavy. Keep smiling pal
You sound really overwhelmed and depressed. Weddings will cause that. When you lose a few corals it's easy to say what's the point. Hang in there, your life will stabilize after you say I do. Your passion will come back, just push yourself through the rough time. I live in Colorado and we have had days over a hundred degrees. My air conditioner is down. I freeze ro water and put the frozen blocks in my sump a coupe to times a day. I also bought a small air conditioner and point it at the tank. My tanks temperature has stayed under 80 degrees even though my home temperature has been in the 90's
Good to watch another video from you Neil. I lose interest from time to time but have all tanks in a position where they can be left alone other than cleaning glass, topping up RO and dosing.
You need to get on to the aquaforest range mate and start keeping sps corals. It's fairly easy to follow and get the corals thriving. There's nothing better than getting an sps coral to colour up. (Apart from picking out flowers for your wedding of course) 😂
Family always comes first and so much to look forward to with the wedding. Hope you had a great time in Portugal. Lovely to see Houdini, hope the little guy is ok. Just enjoy the tank with your family for a bit. Love your channel and really enjoyed the update mate. 👍 No need to apologise, just enjoy the wedding. 'big sexy' 🤣😂 - quality. Need anything mate..give us a shout.
Thanks Jay. Really appreciate that mate. It just been a nightmare with having to slash 45 guests from our wedding due to social distancing. Boris said we could have unlimited guests but the hotel said they can only do 36. It’s stressing us right out 😄
Hey mate good to see you again. Dont worry about it life gets in the way its normal. This is my third attempt at this hobby over say 12 years, i normally go full throttle into for 18months to 2 years and then it goes, tank crash another coral dies something. Its natural, but its a drug you will come back 2 years in 2 years out. I got married had a kid etc then had the bright idea of coming back with a family - once the mrs found out the costs of coral and lights that was then end of that Now i am back we are seperated :) its great, i just hope i can maintain the momentum. I Admire people who can keep a tank going 3+ years i cant it would bore me need to change. Personally as a diver i would rather spend my money on a flight and be on the reef, but that only lasts a few weeks then you are back in front of the tv missing your little slice Dont be disheartended it comes and goes - go get married (congrats) enjoy your life, its like nicotine it will draw you back :) You will always be a reefer and part of this world wide family Good luck DC
Thanks mate. I totally agree with you. It is like a drug! At the moment I’m just not enjoying it but I hope it changes. The kids love the tank so they will help me to keep going. My missus has no idea how much this hobby has cost me so far! If she did, I wouldn’t be getting married next month, that’s for sure 😂
Coral dying really gets people down, it was the same fir me when i started, and it was down to crap lights. Get 2 ecotech xr15 blue and set with AB+, i promise everything grows with those lights, there literally set and forget…
This hobby ain’t easy it’s only the strong survive and keep with it we all feel like at times things don’t go right and people give up stay in there bud ,, u do get to the point where u don’t watch UA-cam because subconsciously ur brain thinks u know everything about the hobby
Congratulations Neil!!
Thanks mate 🙂

Love your honesty Neil, very refreshing to see... I also went through this
Thanks Marty. Hopefully will get my Reefing Mojo back soon. 😌
I don’t know how many times I’ve quit, but I finally learned to keep all my gear because I alway end up going back.
I will keep the tank going. Just Hope I start enjoying it again 🙂

I’m glad it’s not just me Paul. Yeah mine can look after itself but it’s the testing and water changes that are becoming a chore 😄
