  • Why not capture the gas coming off manure lagoons?! A dairy farm that that captures methane from manure and converts it into power that is directly piped into the the city's natural gas pipeline! As long as the cows are pooping, the farm is able to produce renewable energy! The process converts methane to energy, which the farm sells. With a methane digester, natural gas coming off the manure ponds is no longer just emitted into the air.
    How it works:
Water is used to flush cow manure from barns. It then goes through a system that essentially operates like a screen, separating the liquids from the solids. The liquid goes into lagoons. The manure lagoons are covered with a tarp. The manure lagoons naturally boil methane. The tarp traps gases from the lagoon and the methane goes into a pipe, which is able to continuously generate electricity. The water and fertilizer byproducts of the manure go back onto feed crops, and the grain and hay the cattle eat then results in manure, which produces energy, he said. #FarmingIsCool #SaveACowPowerTheWorld

I’m a custom silage harvester and the 19mm is the cut length. The distance from the knives and shear bar don’t change because you want them tight for a clean cut. What dose change is the feed roll speed, and that is what forces the crop into the knives. Slower feed roll speed shorter cut, faster the speed longer the cut. Cool to see how it’s done in other parts of the country!

Was just going to post this. Its effectively the length of material fed into the drum from the feed rollers(compression rollers) before a knife passes it.

Thank you, Zach!! This was sooo interesting! You are more than welcome to come visit our farm in Kansas!🥰 We milk 3 cows!🤣 Ilsa could even milk a cow and a goat, feed bottle lambs, goats, and calves! 😁 What a fun learning experience for your children and US of course! We LOVE following along with you! Thank you for being a farm advocate, Zach! I am fourteen and I have a farm UA-cam channel too! Someday I hope to reach as many people as you do! Blessings to you!

Another awesome video. I’ve worked for a company where we hauled waste fruits & veggies into digesters in a less rural location and a farm in south GA. Scientists are working more and more on how to recycle one byproduct into another product and so on. Jokingly they are using everything from the cow except the moo, and they are working on that. Thanks all.

,Looks like quite the operation. There are 2 huge dairies west of me. One is 9500 head & the other is 11,000 head. They use the rotating milking system I think. When the 9500 head dairy was built they said it cost $50,000.000 to build. They even have an apartment building for the workers.

Very interesting indeed. I am retired now but I was a tour bus driver out of Ontario, Canada. I have driven by these huge dairy operations in New Mexico, Arizona, and California but never had the chance to actually visit. Most of them aren’t on land that has irrigation so they buy all the food for the cows. I also liked how he explained the pens for the young calf’s being like a child’s crib. That should stop the well meaning people that think farmers are treating their animals poorly from condemning without education

Hey Zack/Becky, keeping in the spirit of touring different farms and learning from eachother... I'd love to make a suggestion. Maybe at some point in the future you guys could set up a colab with the guy from "Crime pays but botany doesn't". He's a really cool and really smart self taught botanist. He's probably mostly against racing around big motorized vehicles across beautifull natural areas but I think ya'll could learn a lot from eachother. His enthausiasm about botany is really contageous. I bet he has some vast and invaluable knowledge about the native plant life of minesota and effects of water management/herbicides on the ecology of the region. Or might give some extra insight into the ecological areas you guys maintain (natural wetland areas if I remember correctly?). Might be a cool contrast to the constant agricultural based plants. Thanks for all the awesome videos!!

Digester system on the farm is awesome. Does he sell his composted manure? The Air Tractor is made south of the high plains at Olney Texas. If this area (West Texas and Eastern New Mexico} were a separate state it would be the number 3 dairy state. The dairy's and cheese factories look like cities in the night. A few months ago lightning struck a methane generator and lit up the sky for 40 miles. The gas is shipped to California at a premium price along with our gas from the Hugoton field. The cheese factory gets its milk by pipeline from the dairy farms that cover tens of thousands of acres.

It's good to see that there are still some people that want to stay on the farm and big time grow the operation.
The dairy operation working 7,000 head a day boggles the mind. It can't be cheap with all the controls and inspections in place to operate. I'm very interested in the recycling set up and the methane gas operation. Just like changing corn into ethanol, have they looked at adding a yeast type product to cause further out-gassing to increase the methane.

For those that aren't aware, methane is also referred to as swamp gas. It's very common to see methane bubbles in certain ponds and lakes and is the result of the decomposition of organic materials that naturally occur in that type environment. Ghost fires can occur when the methane is ignited above the aforementioned water bodies, but is rarely explosive due to the low volume of both organic material and the gas accumulation.

You weren't wrong about the title of this episode. Fantastic. I agree with you about that view of those fields as well. Beautiful. My guess on the digester cost would be somewhere north of $15k 😁😁😁. Great video Zach.

Man, talk about your big dairy operations, that was great.
Plus, after only two months I have now binge-watched every single video here and over on Between the Rows as well. Whew, I'm exhausted.
