I just want to say that you are like my hero atm. My transmission did this same thing and I was so panicked because its like 2 weeks til Christmas and I'm in college so a new transmission would be more than my car is worth and I can't afford that. I was so upset but I spent $50 bucks on fluid and a filter. After 4 hours laid out in my driveway my baby runs! I am so happy like words can't even describe. I thought I was going to have to use my tuition money and miss a semester. You really saved the day. Thank you so much!!!

I bought 6 pack of Toyota quarts tranny fluid for $43.09 and $15.83 for new trans filter, changed myself. WOuld have liked to seen exactly how you removed the parts and replaced them in your demonstration, Thanks Again!!

Ok, so I’m pretty sure you just provided the solution to my transmission problem, but now I have to go watch another video to see where the filter goes, and how to replace the pan gasket. Anyway, if it solves the problem then Thank You. The shop want $6,900 before taxes, and I will set it on fire before I pay that much to fix it.

Rebecca Rorie Get that Filter and fluid changed by a reputable mechanic shop! Make sure they use the correct fluid for Toyota transmissions. Then get the drain and fill services done every 15k miles after that. It doesn't hurt to use a good additive like TransX for synthetic fluid at the filter service. I own a 2001 with over 200,000 miles on the original drivetrain! They need and deserve attention at the factory recommended service intervals. Good luck!!!

I had same loud whining, also immediately eliminated by changing the filter. TIP: Use NEW crush gasket on drain plug(s)...I tried re-using, and pan drain plug still leaked even at specified 37 ft. lb. of torque. BTW, you can also remove the front differential drain plug (horizontal, about 6" behind the transmission pan drain plug, also 10mm hex) to drain out another pint of old AT fluid.

The Lexus 2001 to 2002 models were plagued with a badly engineered valve body which lacked an oil hole used to facilitate pressure for shifting smoothly and cooling the 1st/reverse planet gear set which usually failed, sometimes near 50 thousand miles.
I just rebuilt my 2001 Lexus Transmission but, even after all that it bump shifts from 2 to 3rd whose shift is determined by the application of a few solenoids as well as input from the speed sensors and throttle position. The shift up to 3rd is pretty bad, and this is after a deep cleaning and rebuild and full fluid change to the transmission. The trans light or codes have never been triggered either, and I have successfully repaired every trouble code plaguing the car, such as it's fail safe, No OD, No Trac/VSC light show limp mode that gets activated if there's bad timing and faulty knock sensors due to over clocking of the adjustment range of the ignition timing. This is why if the timing slips a tooth on a cam, then the VSC code will be triggered, despite of those two bank 1 and 2 sensors actually working fine.
If you have a rough shake, delay, or hard bump in shifting for these early model Lexus RXs, first try resetting the TCM by applying the gas for 3 second, then turn on ignition, hold gas for 3 seconds or so, then lift foot off pedal and you should hear a sound that means the TCM will now have to go through an adaptive learning process. This little trick prevents the need for an expensive Transmission scanner and it goes beyond what disconnecting battery terminals or clicking the neg and pos together methods. This is because this shift learning is in the TCM memory and only a scanner or this back door method can be used. As far as I know this does reset the shift learning, and it can be done for any big change to the transmission such as a fluid change. It possible that a full scanner can adjust the shift points through the scanner manually, but I have yet to bring the car to a shop to have them do that for me. One person has advised me recently that I will have to use a scanner in order to reset 'corrupted' baseline shifting if the transmission had to over compensate due to delayed pressure from the poorly engineered valve body. He said that a professional scanner will program in a new baseline, based on the OEM specs of that transmission model, and for him, it fixed all his bad shifting after months of replacing solenoids.
Just remember, I think personally it's a combination of all these faulty parts, the valve body, solenoids, modules and accumulators, that create this typical set of issues that eventually lead to complete transmission failure from overheating the planet gear set due to a lower volume and pressure of the fluid through time, due to the bad design of the valve body in these early U140E models.
Anyways, if the rough shift continues to happen after say 200 miles, then you probably should consider an upgrade to the valve body of the 2003 model, or, buy an upgraded valve body where an extra oil hole is added and solenoids upgraded (sensors no longer have mounting brackets on upgraded sensors from what i looked into). Seems like you can find a used upgraded valve body, in today's time, for about 500 to 800 bucks.
Also when you are diagnosing these shifting issues, check whether or not you can manually influence this shifting by using the gear selector to switch to the gear you notice is struggling.
Basically for my delayed and rough 2nd to 3rd upshift, I put the gear selector in 2, and then shift to D at the right time and RPM, to facilitate the shift timing and allow the gears to change. If I do that in good timing, and let off the gas for the shift to happen, the problem ceases to appear.
Basically, the issue with my valve body, and Lexus's resolution to it, was to improve the fluid flow and pressure compared to the old design that overheated the planet gear and also created shift delays. That said, just replacing my Valve Body to an upgraded model may not be enough and most likely I'll have to replace the solenoids and accumulators and seals as well.
All this information is what I've gathered over the span of about a year messing with this Transmission issue. Please correct me if I'm wrong about some of these particulars, and also add in any information you know on this year, make and model, as well as it's giant recall that finally took place due to a large multitude of customer complaints and even bodily injury.
This 2001 Lexus I'm working on, in the year of 2022, had a blown 1st reverse planet gear when I purchased it, and so far, everything from the O2, Knock, sludge, rear main seal, torque converter, clutch packs, Orings and seals, VVT sensors, reset timing with new timing belt, have all been text book issues or complaints for this model, and I find myself chasing and repairing them all. This Lexus has almost 300 thousand miles and with all this work, it should run for at least another 100 grand. On a side note, I also own and drive a 2003 RX300, and it's been a great comparable as it has more miles on it with zero transmission issues to this day. They are both, however, plagued by the knick sensors and O2 sensor issues that turns on the Trac and VSC light, and prevents it from getting into the last gear. The transmission of course, in my 2003 Model, is upgraded from the factory to address the issues with the U140E transmissions.

Informative, thanks. Would you buy a used 99-01 Rx 300 for $800? And try to fix it. I might do this

    • @phoenixmistertwo8815
      @phoenixmistertwo8815 8 місяців тому +1

@@LegolasD Yes, I definitely would do that. I am starting to see them very cheap on market place, from many that reach a high mileage and want to get rid of it in their driveway. My main driver, a 2003 RX300, has 305,000 miles on it and after 200,000, the timing belt starting to tell me it needed changing, and that is where I'm at with that one. Meanwhile I jumped in my 2001 Rx300, that I did the transmission rebuild on, to drive in the meantime. That 01 only cost me 1500 with a bad trans, but really, it should have been like 600 bucks, but thankfully, the body and interior are in perfect shape.
These SUVs drive very well, and during their time, they were a 40 thousand dollar luxury vehicle, and you will know it when you get in one that is running good and in good order. The only issue I have with the car, is the more complex electronics that I am now getting used to as I normally drive cars with OBD1, a more outdated and simple system.
I kind of wish I had the AWD model, but, from what I hear, that transmission is even more temperamental. The one I rebuilt is the U140E FWD transmission, and that car has 270 thousand on it, and after sprucing up the motor, and fixing the timing and all the commonly bad sensors, it now runs excellent and strong. Keep in mind though, just the two knock sensors that often go bad at that mileage, will cost a thousand, which includes all the gaskets and wiring harness needed for that job. I also had to change a VVT sensor, and that was quite the cost, along with a thermostat, and all the spark plugs, since the knock sensors will grant you access to all that when you get into it.
So there is a cost to getting this car up to par, however, if you find one that perhaps had all that changed already. I have seen a few for 1400, 2500, and as low as the price you mention so, if you have options, try to find one where some work for the common failed parts are addressed and replaced if possible.
Another thing to note about this car is the safety level, and how well it drives. The cons, it has a terrible turning radius, its only good in the rain when your tires are better than 35 percent tread, and, if and when the TRAC and VSC lights come on, it will require sensor diagnostics with a basic scanner to find the issue and replace whatever is bad. Aside from that, its an excellent vehicle that Lexus may not ever make in such form again.
