People don't notice that moment the fight started gremmy set himself up to lose. He literally says your as strong as I imagined. He would have lost no matter what he tried. They keep shitting on gremmy which I guess is justified to a certain point.
His fight is a really good one great one in fact. Kubo is the ultimate troll amongst mangaka. He never really cared of the expectations of people he does what he wants but what he does is really beautiful. This fight is like a meta commentary on people's imagination and expectations along with the representation of what it means to be the strongest

Those who've read the manga are firmly aware of how much of a joke Gremmy was. Tekking101 had a whole video listing at least five things Gremmy could have done to help him in the fight against Kenpachi.
I wished the anime made changes to the fight and add more stuff but sadly they did not

Bleach has amazing characters the problem genuinely with Bleach is many concepts in it are drip fed to the reader so many people don't understand everything within the series their first time experiencing it.
This is made far worse because and it pains me to say it. The original Bleach anime is a poor adaptation of the manga.
The manga is much more violent with more focus put on the subtle character work and I recommend it over the OG anime.
There was a point in my life where I thought bleach was worse than Naruto but I genuinely don't believe that anymore. A lot of concepts introduced in Shippuden were messy and reek of retcon after retcon. Especially during the war arc
When I went back to re-read bleach there was a lot of philosophy and character work I completely missed my first time watching it and it deserves to be appreciated more imo.

Luffy is rubber. He doesn't think he's rubber, that's just what he is. Luffy stretched instantly after eating the fruit before Shanks even said it was the gum gum fruit. Even after awakening his powers are still rubber based but now he has more freedom, strength and can rubberize things outside his body. The problem is most of the fanbase saying Luffy can do anything or has "toon force" and that's just wrong. I guess he can do anything within the confines of rubber/stretching but that's it lol

I never got the hype people had for Gremmy after the manga since for a character with the power of imagination you would expect a much better fight, but then again, this fight was to introduce and show off the Shikai of Zaraki, which was the same we just saw from Renji, Rukia and Ichigo a little, and for me it kills the tension since the fights felt more like executions rather than fights.
People overhype everything up for the anime. The og who read the manga when it's ongoing know how poorly the Gremmy fight was received.
Kubo should've just made the original Sternritter V the actual Sternritter V. Vanishing dude had a tricky set of powers that could've made for an interesting fight against somebody (def not kenpachi), and Kubo could have avoided writing himself into a corner with Gremmy's nonsense 🙄
So for those with lower reading comprehension,
Gremmy clearly needs power to materialize what he imagines. He needed 2 of him to materialize the meteor, he needed 6 of him to create the pocket of space. People who say why not imagine Kenpachi is just dead, its because that requires power, logically even more than the 2 things that required so much that failed to kill him. Same should apply in order to imagine anything effecting him internally.
He clearly needs to believe what he imagines will have the specific effect it does to work, so if something fails once he isn't going to think it can now work if he tries again; especially when Kenpachi is easily powering through.
He has to also concentrate on things to remain in effect, which appear to correlate in difficulty to the power used to make things happen. He doesn't lack imagination, he lacks the power to materialize something strong enough to beat Kenpachi, this is proven when he couldn't create a container strong enough to hold Kenpachi's power.
He said it himself, he perfectly imagined how powerful Kenpachi was, the problem was he couldn't imagine anything as strong as his body to contain it because he viewed him as a literal monster. That combined with his lost self image of being entirely above anyone else aside His Majesty is why he loses. It works well even if most of us wanted to see more of the power.
I swear people just don't try to understand Bleach's basic power system. And if someone explains their power, that's bad writing. Gremmy doesn't explain full workings of his power and Kubo just shows the limits, character's experience and mindset, and usage of his powers, but apparently that's also bad.
Not to mention kenny himself cant manage his true power

That's the whole point of his character. He was never meant to be some massive monster character. He was kept in a cage his whole life. He had no experience and came up against the worst possible match up for him in kenpachi.
Gremmy spent his whole life locked up by Yhwach inside a room which prevented him from interact with anything from outside.

The point of the fight was to prove Kenpachi couldn't cut everything. Gremmy didn't want to kill him in no physical ways, just in the ending he did that w/space because he was desesperate.
Reality bending powers in shonen are almost always disappointingly underutilized. Had the same issue with the Word Devil from BC. He could make anything he wanted but the last part of the fight is him spamming the same spell.
Gear 5 was a disappointment.

It should be cardinal sin of writing to give such a narrative-breaking ability to any character. There's way too many "he could've done x, y, and z" plot holes that this presents. Kubo really wrote himself into a corner with this kind of character. Arguably, one of Kubo's biggest flaws was balancing out the insane power creep.

Especially when you could probably just imagine yourself with more powers.

I think Gremmy was sort of set up to fail on 2 fronts, he went up against Kenpachi - who was just coming off a major powerup and his powers inherently broken so he has to be nerfed by the plot. Still think he should have done more but Kubos saving that for my guy Gerard ❤

Kenpachi cut through space and time lol. Gremmy was limited in what his imagination could do he needs clones to make anything massive. He literally had to make 10 clones to make a pocket of space. Remember what Aizen said you can counter any ability if you have enough reiatsu.

Bleach with the amount of hax abilities it has, really comes down to matchups and sheer Spiritual pressure, as well as the character's personality and mindset.
Gremmy's ability really comes down to his own competence, if he was more battle hardened, or more experienced in his battle. Like if his Visionary Power was given to someone like Aizen, Aizen would be damn near unstoppable.
It could apply to a lot of characters really, Like Shinji's Shikai or Rose's Bankai in theory would mess up a lot of opponents but in 1v1 fights, but they are given some really bad opponents (Shinji being Aizen, and Bambietta who's AoE's countered him) and Rose would've beat Mask if he didnt reveal how his ability worked.
Gremmy is better in the anime than the manga, with that being said still garbage. He had potential but he was always super op character with heavy gimmick. Dude said imagination like 100 times. Even the moment when Kenpachi called him out about wanting to fight the strongest, that moment felt super dramatic and corny. Mostly because it felt rushed. The fight had pretty much just started 😂. I give Gremmy a 3.5/10

Its very much possible that Gremmy didn't just wanted to kill kenpachi but to fight him.
When it comes to gremmys powers ive seen some pretty cool and fitting explanations as to why he couldn't just do whatever the hell he wanted.
1. He needs other people to believe what he's doing as well as himself, so if someone isn't imaging the same thing he is his power is lessened.
2. Needs to know how what he's imagining works. So he can't just make something he has no experience with, he needs to know about the thing he's imagining. Imagining a meteor is no big deal, imagining something complex however would be more tricky.
3. His imagination is a double edged sword. We see this is actually true in the anime where he starts imaging kenpachi is stronger than himself and that comes true. So he has to constantly be aware of what he's imagining so he doesn't accidentally imagine something horrible for himself.
4. He can't imagine immaterial things. So he cant just imagine someone dying, or cant imagine abstract concepts, the things he can imagine need to be actually physical.
It could be none or all of these for all we know.
He imagines guns and missles. Those are much more complex than you think. Missles can cost millions

Unfortunately, this is all head canon. We are never given enough information on what Gremmy can and can't do. I feel like Kubo didn't put enough thought into the TYBW arc in terms of powers and just did anything.
A good comparison of Gremmy's powers was in a certain magical index. In that anime, there was a character with the same abilities but couldn't imagine anything he didn't believe in, so he kept on injecting himself with a drug that to keep his mind clear and free of any doubts.

Yeah in theory Gremmy could use tsunamis and volcanoes, but those are more of AOE attacks against multiple people, and Gremmy is only focused on Kenpachi, noone else. The meteor was also primarily made for attacking Kenpachi, the Seireitei is just a bonus.
Gremmy not using the same attack twice was probably cuz if it won't work the first time, won't second time either. Kenpachi cut the first meteor with ease apparently, so he'll definitely cut the 2nd, 3rd, and so on.
As fight went on and Kenpachi kept cutting through everything, Gremmy slowly imagined Kenpachi as someone that nothing would work on. Gremmy was losing the mental battle, which impeded any creative juices (if any) he had going on.
If Gremmy was competent he should have used vollstandig. You know the quincy ability that enhances their Shrift? absorb reishi to empower their abilities?
I think you’re underestimating Kenpachi’s INSANE raw, almost animalistic, instincts. Yes, Sternritter V did vanish, but Yachiru was able to sense his presence and react the instant he makes his presence known. Yachiru can do it, Kenpachi can DEFINITELY do it to. Remember his fight with Tousen? The instant Tousen’s sword touched him, he reacted and defeated him, undoing the dark void Bankai. Grammy tried to trap him in a space void and Kenpachi literally cut space to escape lol Kenpachi didn’t even use his shikai the whole fight and the moment he did, the fight ended 😂 Beast Mode.

I think it has to do with Ego and Limitation of his mind to stop something that can cut everything imo.
The problem is you cant write in powers like imagination or almighty omnipotence. They are too wide spread in ideas, applications, usage, and logic that any form of it being portrayed will either be severely watered down (gremmy) or way too OP (yhwach)

Gremmy not appearing with a weapon disappointed me, as the fight went along, I wondered even if he has a retsu capacity why not have a secret weapon that was both the limits of this imagination maxed out with his retsu supply ( "I thought of something that exceeded my ability to stop it so best I could do was just put it in this box, so have at it"). Kubo gave up, when the company started felling themselves.
The anime wisely made the outside reactions less frightened than in the manga because Gremmy was not going to be more impressive than the last five Steinritters. Good move not to increase the false clout of Gremmy.
I totally disagree completely Kubo loves double edge swords he made Gremmy power broken but dangerous. Think about this if anything you imagine becomes true then what about intrusive thoughts? Is everything you imagine always going to be positive especially in a fight against a stronger opponent even Ichigo was imaging bad things against his fights with Kenpachi??? Also Gremmy was a kid that was locked up who had limited imagination. Gremmy also did enough to kill any normal Shinigami Kenpachi just built different. Two or three meteors would do nothing to Kenpachi. Volcano tsunami non of that was going to kill Kenpachi. Also in the Bleach verse spiritual pressure can overcome Hax Gremmy physically can’t alter Kenpachi body. Finally Gremmy isn’t the main villain or one of the big villains in this arc either so to expect something different is crazy every Strenritter that had fought had the same treatment.

Yeah, the final arc of the manga was always a mess during the last arc. And it hasn't helped that the anime has just been rushing through everything in the manga despite claims they were going to "change things and fix certain plot elements". It definitely doesn't seem that way at all
